Calibration of a solid state nuclear track detector (SSNTD) with high detection threshold to search for rare events in cosmic rays

We have investigated a commercially available polymer for its suitability as a solid state nuclear track detector (SSNTD). We identified that polymer to be polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and found that it has a higher detection threshold compared to many other widely used SSNTDs which makes this detector particularly suitable for rare event search in cosmic rays as it eliminates the dominant low Z background. Systematic studies were carried out to determine its charge response which is essential before any new material can be used as an SSNTD. In this paper we describe the charge response of PET to 129Xe, 78Kr and 49Ti ions from the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN, present the calibration curve for PET and characterize it as a nuclear track detector.

Extreme nuclear shapes examined via Giant Dipole Resonance lineshapes in hot light mass system

The influence of alpha clustering on nuclear reaction dynamics is investigated using the giant dipole resonance (GDR) lineshape studies in the reactions 20Ne (Elab=145,160 MeV) + 12C and 20Ne (Elab=160 MeV) + 27Al, populating 32S and 47V, respectively. The GDR lineshapes from the two systems are remarkably different from each other. Whereas, the non alpha-like 47V undergoes Jacobi shape transition and matches exceptionally well with the theoretical GDR lineshape estimated under the framework rotating liquid drop model (RLDM) and thermal shape fluctuation model (TSFM) signifying shape equilibration, for alpha cluster 32S an extended prolate kind of shape is observed. This unusual deformation, seen directly via -decay for the first time, is predicted to be due to the formation of orbiting di-nuclear configuration or molecular structure of 16O+ 16O in 32S superdeformed band.

Multi-pronged events from Coulomb fission of nuclei at very low energies

Multi-pronged tracks have been recorded in the polyethylene terephthalate (C$_{10}$H$_8$O$_4$)$_n$ solid state nuclear track detector by exposure to a $^{252}$Cf fission source. After chemical etching, two-prong to six-pronged tracks along with single tracks have been observed under the optical microscope. We carried out a systematic study to understand the origin of the prongs. The track detectors were coated with metals (Cu, Ag and Pb) and were exposed to $^{252}$Cf source. After chemical etching two-prong to four pronged tracks were observed in each plate. We believe that at this very low energy of the order of 1 MeV/A, Coulomb fission is the only plausible explanation for the origin of such multi-pronged tracks.

Light charged particle emission from hot $^{32}$S$^{*}$ formed in $^{20}$Ne + $^{12}$C reaction

Inclusive energy distributions for light charged particles ($p, d, t$ and $α$) have been measured in the $^{20}$Ne (158, 170, 180, 200 MeV) + $^{12}$C reactions in the angular range 10$^{o}$ -- 50$^{o}$. Exclusive light charged particle energy distribution measurements were also done for the same system at 158 MeV bombarding energy by in-plane light charged particle -- fragment coincidence. Pre-equilibrium components have been separated out from proton energy spectra using moving source model considering two sources. The data have been compared with the predictions of the statistical model code CASCADE. It has been observed that significant deformation effects were needed to be introduced in the compound nucleus in order to explain the shape of the evaporated $d, t$ energy spectra. For protons, evaporated energy spectra were rather insensitive to nuclear deformation, though angular distributions could not be explained without deformation. Decay sequence of the hot $^{32}$S nucleus has been investigated through exclusive light charged particle measurements using the $^{20}$Ne (158 MeV) + $^{12}$C reaction. Information on the sequential decay chain has been extracted through comparison of the experimental data with the predictions of the statistical model. It is observed from the present analysis that exclusive light charged particle data may be used as a powerful tool to probe the decay sequence of hot light compound systems.

Giant Dipole Resonance Width in near-Sn Nuclei at Low Temperature and High Angular Momentum

High energy gamma-rays in coincidence with low energy yrast gamma-rays have been measured from 113Sb, at excitation energies of 109 and 122 MeV, formed by bombarding 20Ne on 93Nb at projectile energies of 145 and 160 MeV respectively to study the role of angular momentum (J) and temperature (T) over Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) width. The maximum populated angular momenta for fusion were 67hbar and 73hbar respectively for the above-mentioned beam energies. The high energy photons were detected using a Large Area Modular BaF2 Detector Array (LAMBDA) along with a 24-element multiplicity filter. After pre-equilibrium corrections, the excitation energy E* was averaged over the decay steps of the compound nucleus (CN). The average values of temperature, angular momentum, CN mass etc. have been calculated by the statistical model code CASCADE. Using those average values, results show the systematic increase of GDR width with T which is consistent with Kusnezov parametrization and the Thermal Shape Fluctuation Model. The rise of GDR width with temperature also supports the assumptions of adiabatic coupling in the Thermal Shape Fluctuation Model. But the GDR widths and corresponding reduced plots with J are not consistent with the theoretical model at high spins.

Characterization of fragment emission in ^{20}Ne (7 - 10 MeV/nucleon) + ^{12}C reactions

The inclusive energy distributions of the complex fragments (3 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 7) emitted from the bombardment of ^{12}C by ^{20}Ne beams with incident energies between 145 and 200 MeV have been measured in the angular range 10$^{o} \leq θ_{lab} \leq$ 50^{o}. Damped fragment yields in all the cases have been found to be the characteristic of emission from fully energy equilibrated composites. The binary fragment yields are compared with the standard statistical model predictions. Enhanced yields of entrance channel fragments (5 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 7) indicate the survival of orbiting-like process in ^{20}Ne + ^{12}C system at these energies.

Study of Dissipative Collisions of $^{20}$Ne ($\sim$7-11 MeV/nucleon) + $^{27}$Al

The inclusive energy distributions of complex fragments (3 $\leq$Z $\leq$ 9) emitted in the reactions $^{20}$Ne (145, 158, 200, 218 MeV) + $^{27}$Al have been measured in the angular range 10$^{o}$ - 50$^{o}$. The fusion-fission and the deep-inelastic components of the fragment yield have been extracted using multiple Gaussian functions from the experimental fragment energy spectra. The elemental yields of the fusion-fission component have been found to be fairly well exlained in the framework of standard statistical model. It is found that there is strong competition between the fusion-fission and the deep-inelastic processes at these energies. The time scale of the deep-inelastic process was estimated to be typically in the range of $\sim$ 10$^{-21}$ - 10$^{-22}$ sec., and it was found to decrease with increasing fragment mass. The angular momentum dissipations in fully energy damped deep-inelastic process have been estimated from the average energies of the deep-inelastic components of the fragment energy spectra. It has been found that, the estimated angular momentum dissipations, for lighter fragments in particular, are more than those predicted by the empirical sticking limit.

Evidence of large nuclear deformation of $^{32}$S$^{*}$ formed in $^{20}$Ne + $^{12}$C reaction

Deformations of hot composite $^{32}$S$^{*}$ formed in the reaction $^{20}$Ne ($\sim$ 7 -- 10 MeV/nucleon) + $^{12}$C have been estimated from the respective inclusive $α$-particle evaporation spectra. The estimated deformations for $^{32}$S$^{*}$ have been found to be much larger than the `normal' deformations of hot, rotating composites at similar excitations. This further confirms the formation of highly deformed long-lived configuration of $^{20}$Ne + $^{12}$C at high excitations ($\sim$ 70 -- 100 MeV) -- which was recently indicated from the analysis of the complex fragment emission data for the same system. Exclusive $α$-particle evaporation spectra from the decay of hot composite $^{32}$S$^{*}$ also show similar behaviour.

Folding model analysis of proton scattering from $^{18,20,22}$O nuclei

The elastic and inelastic proton scattering on $^{18,20,22}$O nuclei are studied in a folding model formalism of nucleon-nucleus optical potential and inelastic form factor. The DDM3Y effective interaction is used and the ground state densities are obtained in continuum Skyrme-HFB approach. A semi-microscopic approach of collective form factors is done to extract the deformation parameters from inelastic scattering analysis while the microscopic approach uses the continuum QRPA form factors. Implications of the values of the deformation parameters, neutron and proton transition moments for the nuclei are discussed. The p-analyzing powers on $^{18,20,22}$O nuclei are also predicted in the same framework.

Survival of orbiting in $^{20}$Ne (7 - 10 MeV/nucleon) + $^{12}$C reactions

The inclusive energy distributions of fragments with Z $\geq$ 3 emitted from the bombardment of $^{12}$C by $^{20}$Ne beams with incident energies between 145 and 200 MeV have been measured in the angular range $θ_{lab} \sim$ 10$^\circ$ - 50$^\circ$. Damped fragment yields in all cases have been found to be characteristic of emission from fully energy equilibrated composites; for B, C fragments, average Q-values, $ $, were independent of the centre of mass emission angle ($θ_{c.m}$), and the angular distributions followed $\sim$1/sin$θ_{c.m}$ like variation, signifying long life times of the emitting di-nuclear systems. Total yields of these fragments have been found to be much larger compared to the standard statistical model predictions of the same. This may be indicative of the survival of orbiting like process in $^{12}$C + $^{20}$Ne system at these energies.

Folding model analysis of proton scattering from mirror nuclei $^{18}$Ne and $^{18}$O

The elastic and inelastic scattering of protons from mirror nuclei $^{18}$Ne and $^{18}$O are studied in a folding model approach. For comparison, two different effective interactions are folded with Hartree-Fock densities to obtain the nuclear interaction potentials. Both of them provide equivalent descriptions to the data and the deformation parameters extracted from inelastic scattering are reasonable. The density dependence parameters obtained from nuclear matter calculations and used for present analysis also provide a good estimate for the nuclear mean free path. The present formalism unifies radioactivity, nuclear matter and nuclear scattering.

Inelastic scattering of protons from $^{6,8}$He and $^{7,11}$Li in a folding model approach

The proton-inelastic scattering from $^{6,8}$He and $^{7,11}$Li nuclei are studied in a folding model approach. A finite-range, momentum, density and isospin dependent nucleon-nucleon interaction (SBM) is folded with realistic density distributions of the above nuclei. The renormalization factors N$_R$ and N$_I$ on the real and volume imaginary part of the folded potentials are obtained by analyzing the respective elastic scattering data and kept unaltered for the inelastic analysis at the same energy. The form factors are generated by taking derivatives of the folded potentials and therefore required renormalizations. The $β$ values are extracted by fitting the p + $^{6,8}$He,$^{7,11}$Li inelastic angular distributions. The present analysis of p + $^8$He inelastic scattering to the 3.57 MeV excited state, including unpublished forward angle data (RIKEN) confirms L = 2 transition. Similar analysis of the p + $^6$He inelastic scattering angular distribution leading to the 1.8 MeV (L = 2) excited state fails to satisfactorily reproduce the data.
