Spin Waves, Phase Separation, and Interphase Boundaries in Double Exchange Magnets

We study a classical double exchange magnet with direct antiferromagnetic superexchange coupling, J, between the localized spins. It is shown that the de-stabilization of the ferromagnetic ground state with increasing J leads to phase separation; the latter always preempts the spin-wave instability (softening of the magnon spectrum). It is also found that the boundaries separating the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic areas of the sample tend to be abrupt.

Spin Wave Theory of Double Exchange Ferromagnets

We construct the 1/S spin-wave expansion for double exchange ferromagnets at T=0. It is assumed that the value of Hund's rule coupling, J_H, is sufficiently large, resulting in a fully saturated, ferromagnetic half-metallic ground state. We evaluate corrections to the magnon dispersion law, and we also find that, in contrast to earlier statements in the literature, magnon-electron scattering does give rise to spin wave damping. We analyse the momentum dependence of these quantities and discuss the experimental implications for colossal magnetoresistance compounds.

Spin Wave Theory of Double Exchange Magnets

An isotropic half-metallic double exchange magnet with a direct superexchange coupling between the localized spins is studied within the spin-wave (1/S) expansion. The momentum dependence of the spin wave spectrum (including quantum corrections) in the ferromagnetic phase at T=0 is investigated. Based on the calculated spin wave spectrum of the canted state, it is shown that as long as the external magnetic field is not too strong, the double exchange -- superexchange competition does not result in a stabilization of a two-sublattice canted spin ordering.

On the Theory of Magnets with Competing Double Exchange and Superexchange Interactions

In the CMR materials, ferromagnetic double exchange (DE) presumably coexists with a direct nearest-neighbour antiferromagnetic interaction. We construct a single-site mean field theory that explicitly takes into account the different nature of carrier-mediated ferromagnetism vs. Heisenberg-like superexchange. We find, in contrast to previous results in the literature, that the competition between these two exchange interactions leads to ferro- or antiferromagnetic order with incomplete saturation of the magnetization (or sublattice magnetization), rather than spin canting. The associated experimental implications are discussed.

A Theory of Magnets with Competing Double Exchange and Superexchange Interactions

We study the competition between ferromagnetic double exchange (DE) and nearest-neighbour antiferromagnetic exchange in CMR materials. Towards this end, a single site mean field theory is proposed which emphasizes the hopping-mediated nature of the DE contribution. We find that the competition between these two exchange interactions leads to ferro- or antiferromagnetic order with incomplete saturation of the (sub)lattice magnetization. This conclusion is in contrast to previous results in the literature which find a canted spin arrangement under similar circumstances. We attribute this difference to the highly anisotropic exchange interactions used elsewhere. The associated experimental implications are discussed.

Band Crossing and Novel Low-Energy Behaviour in a Mean Field Theory of a Three-Band Model on a Cu--O lattice

We study correlation effects in a three-band extended Hubbard model of Cu -- O planes within the 1/N mean field approach, in the infinite U limit. We investigate the emerging phase diagram and discuss the low energy scales associated with each region. With increasing direct overlap between oxygen orbitals, $t_{pp} >0$, the solution displays a band crossing which, for an extended range of parameters, lies close to the Fermi level. In turn this leads to the nearly nested character of the Fermi surface and the resulting linear temperature dependence of the quasi-particle relaxation rate for sufficiently large T. We also discuss the effect of band crossing on the optical conductivity and comment on the possible experimental relevance of our findings.

Low-Temperature Spin Diffusion in a Spin-Polarized Fermi Gas

We present a finite temperature calculation of the transverse spin-diffusion coefficient, $D_\bot$, in a dilute degenerate Fermi gas in the presence of a small external magnetic field, $H$. While the longitudinal diffusion coefficient displays the conventional low-temperature Fermi-liquid behavior, $D_\parallel \propto T^{-2}$, the corresponding results for $D_\bot$ show three separate regimes: (a) $D_\bot \sim H^{-2}$ for $T \ll H$; (b) $D_\bot \sim T^{-2}$, $D_\bot /D_\parallel \neq 1$ for $T \gg H$ and large spin-rotation parameter $ξ\gg 1$, and (c) $D_\bot = D_\parallel \propto T^{-2}$ for $T \gg H$ and $ξ\ll 1$. Our results are qualitatively consistent with the available experimental data in weakly spin-polarized $^3{\rm He}$ and $^3{\rm He} - ^4{\rm He}$ mixtures.

Spatial Correlation of Conduction Electrons in Metal with Complicated Geometry Of The Fermi Surface

The "density-density" correlation function of conduction electrons in metal is investigated. It is shown, that the asymptotic behaviour of the CF depends on the shape and the local geometry of the Fermi surface. In particular, the exponent of power law which describes the damping of Friedel oscillations at large r (-4 for an isotropic Fermi gas) is determined by local geometry of the FS. The applications of the obtained results to calculations of the CF in a metal near the electron topological transition and of the RKKY exchange integral are considered as well.
