Quantum Transition between an Antiferromagnetic Mott Insulator and $d_{x^2 - y^2}$ Superconductor in Two Dimensions

We consider a Hubbard model on a square lattice with an additional interaction, $W$, which depends upon the square of a near-neighbor hopping. At half-filling and a constant value of the Hubbard repulsion, increasing the strength of the interaction $W$ drives the system from an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator to a $d_{x^2 -y^2}$ superconductor. This conclusion is reached on the basis of zero temperature quantum Monte Carlo simulations on lattice sizes up to $16 \times 16$.

Ground State Phases of the Doped 4-Leg t-J Ladder

Using density matrix renormalization group techniques, we have studied the ground state of the 4-leg t-J ladder doped near half-filling. Depending upon J/t and the hole doping x, three types of ground state phases are found: (1) a phase containing d_{x^2-y^2} pairs; (2) a striped CDW domain-wall phase, and (3) a phase separated regime. A CDW domain-wall consists of fluctuating hole pairs and this phase has significant d_{x^2-y^2} pair field correlations.

c-Axis Infrared Conductivity of a d_{x^2-y^2}-Wave Superconductor with Impurity and Spin-Fluctuation Scattering

Results of a calculation of the c-axis infrared conductivity sigma_c for a d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductor which include both elastic impurity and inelastic spin-fluctuation scattering are presented and compared with the ab-plane conductivity sigma_{ab} in the same model. In this model, the interlayer c-axis coupling is taken to be weak and diffusive. While in clean systems, inelastic scattering leads to a peak at omega = 4*Delta_0 in sigma_{ab} for T < T_c, it has little effect on the corresponding sigma_c, which exhibits structure only at omega = 2*Delta_0 and is directly related to the single-particle density of states N(omega). The c-axis penetration depth lambda_c in the same model is predicted to vary as T^3 at low temperatures in clean samples. We discuss recent optical experiments on the cuprates and compare with these predictions.

Pairing Mechanism in the Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

Here we discuss Quantum Monte Carlo results for the magnetic susceptibility, single-particle spectral weight and the irreducible particle-particle interaction vertex of the two-dimensional Hubbard model. In the doped system, as the temperature is lowered below J=4t^2/U, short-range antiferromagnetic correlations develop. These lead to a narrow low-energy quasiparticle band with a large Fermi surface and a particle-particle vertex which increases at large momentum transfer, which favor d_{x^2-y^2}-pairing.

Pairing Mechanism in Two Hubbard Models that Show d_{x^2-y^2} Pairing

Here we examine various aspects of the pairing mechanism for two models, the two-dimensional and two-leg ladder Hubbard models. Both of these models exhibit pairing correlations with d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry. However, the undoped insulating states of these two systems are different with the two-dimensional lattice characterized by a ground state with long-range antiferromagnetic order and the two-leg ladder having a spin gap in its ground state. Our aim is to gain a better understanding of the underlying pairing mechanism which causes d_{x^2-y^2} pairing in these two models.

Hole pairing and phonon dynamics in generalized 2D $t-J-$Holstein models

The formation of hole pairs in the planar t-J model is studied in the presence of independent {\it dynamic} vibrations of the in-plane oxygen atoms. In-plane (breathing modes) and out-of-plane (buckling modes) displacements are considered. We find strong evidences in favor of a stabilization of the two hole bound pair by out-of-plane vibrations of the in-plane oxygens. On the contrary, the breathing modes weaken the binding energy of the hole pair. These results are discussed in the context of the superconducting cuprates.

Hole and Pair Structures in the t-J model

Using numerical results from density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations for the t-J model, on systems as large as 10x7, we examine the structure of the one and two hole ground states in ladder systems and in two dimensional clusters. A simple theoretical framework is used to explain why holes bind in pairs in two-dimensional antiferromagnets. For the case J/t=0.5, which we have studied, the hole pairs reside predominantly on a 2x2 core plaquette with the probability that the holes are on diagonal sites greater than nearest-neighbor sites. There is a strong singlet bond connecting the spins on the two remaining sites of the plaquette. We find that a general characteristic of dynamic holes in an antiferromagnet is the presence of frustrating antiferromagnetic bonds connecting next-nearest-neighbor sites across the holes. Pairs of holes bind in order to share the frustrating bonds. At low doping, in addition to hole pairs, there are two additional low-energy structures which spontaneously form on certain finite systems. The first is an undoped Lx2 spin-liquid region, or ladder. The second is a hole moving along a one dimensional chain of sites. At higher doping we expect that hole pairing is always favored.

Local Antiferromagnetic Correlations and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ Pairing

The high $T_c$ cuprate superconductors doped near half-filling have short range antiferromagnetic correlations. Here we describe an intuitive local picture of why, if pairing occurs in the presence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations, the orbital state will have $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry.

Multimode electron-phonon interactions in the 2-dimensional t-J-Holstein model

Polaronic effects are investigated in the two dimensional t--J model (describing Cu spins and holes of the planes in high-$T_c$ cuprates) in the presence of in-plane dynamic oxygen breathing modes. We focus on the effect of dynamic multi-phonon modes. Spin and charge structure factors are computed. We found evidence for self-localisation of the holes and {\it increased} short range antiferromagnetic spin-spin correlations between the remaining spins. This effect persists when all the in-plane oxygen vibration degrees of freedom are taken into account. This suggests that dynamic phonons could play a key role in stabilizing inhomogeneous stripe phases or domain wall structures.

The ground state of the two-leg Hubbard ladder: a density--matrix renormalization group study

We present density-matrix renormalization group results for the ground state properties of two-leg Hubbard ladders. The half-filled Hubbard ladder is an insulating spin-gapped system, exhibiting a crossover from a spin-liquid to a band-insulator as a function of the interchain hopping matrix element. When the system is doped, there is a parameter range in which the spin gap remains. In this phase, the doped holes form singlet pairs and the pair-field and the "$4 k_F$" density correlations associated with pair density fluctuations decay as power laws, while the "$2 k_F$" charge density wave correlations decay exponentially. We discuss the behavior of the exponents of the pairing and density correlations within this spin gapped phase. Additional one-band Luttinger liquid phases which occur in the large interband hopping regime are also discussed.

Optical Conductivity of a t--J Ladder

The optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ of a doped two-leg t--J ladder is calculated for an electric field polarized parallel to the legs of the ladder. The conductivity has a Drude weight proportional to the hole doping and an apparent threshold for absorption (a pseudo gap) which may be associated with the energy to break a pair. This pseudogap in $σ(ω)$ is present even though the pairs have a modified $d_{x^2-y^2}$-like wave function because the geometry of the ladder leads to quasi-particle states which probe the gap along an antinode.

Spin dynamics of SrCu$_2$O$_3$ and the Heisenberg ladder

The $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet in the ladder geometry is studied as a model for the spin degrees of freedom of SrCu$_2$O$_3$. The susceptibility and the spin echo decay rate are calculated using a quantum Monte Carlo technique, and the spin-lattice relaxation rate is obtained by maximum entropy analytic continuation of imaginary time correlation functions. All calculated quantities are in reasonable agreement with experimental results for SrCu$_2$O$_3$ if the exchange coupling $J \approx 850$K, i.e. significantly smaller than in high-T$_c$ cuprates.

Effects of intrabilayer coupling on the magnetic properties of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_6$

A two-layer Heisenberg antiferromagnet is studied as a model of the bilayer cuprate YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_6$. Quantum Monte Carlo results are presented for the temperature dependence of the spin correlation length, the static structure factor, the magnetic susceptibility, and the $^{63}$Cu NMR spin-echo decay rate $1/T_{2G}$. As expected, when the ratio $J_2/J_1$ of the intrabilayer and in-plane coupling strengths is small, increasing $J_2$ pushes the system deeper inside the renormalized classical regime. Even for $J_2/J_1$ as small as $0.1$ the correlations are considerably enhanced at temperatures as high as $T/J_1 \approx 0.4-0.5$. This has a significant effect on $1/T_{2G}$, and it is suggested that measurements of this quantity at high temperatures can reveal the strength of the intrabilayer coupling in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_6$.

Dynamical Properties of Two Coupled Hubbard Chains at Half-filling

Using grand canonical Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations combined with Maximum Entropy analytic continuation, as well as analytical methods, we examine the one- and two-particle dynamical properties of the Hubbard model on two coupled chains at half-filling. The one-particle spectral weight function, $A({\bf k},ω)$, undergoes a qualitative change with interchain hopping $t_\perp$ associated with a transition from a four-band insulator to a two-band insulator. A simple analytical model based on the propagation of exact rung singlet states gives a good description of the features at large $t_\perp$. For smaller $t_\perp$, $A({\bf k}, ω)$ is similar to that of the one-dimensional model, with a coherent band of width the effective antiferromagnetic exchange $J$ reasonably well-described by renormalized spin-wave theory. The coherent band rides on a broad background of width several times the parallel hopping integral $t$, an incoherent structure similar to that found in calculations on both the one- and two-dimensional models. We also present QMC results for the two-particle spin and charge excitation spectra, and relate their behavior to the rung singlet picture for large $t_\perp$ and to the results of spin-wave theory for small $t_\perp$.

T-Matrix Formulation of Impurity Scattering in Correlated Systems

Using a generalized T-matrix description which, in principle, exactly includes Coulomb correlations and potential scattering events, resonant and bound impurity states are discussed. Like in the non-interacting case, the effects of the scattering potential can be divided into different partial wave channels, exploiting the symmetry of the underlying lattice. Due to Coulomb correlations bare local (i.e.\ s-wave) potentials become dynamic and extended, being responsible also for p-, d-wave etc. scattering effects. Numerically exact results for both the two-dimensional t--J and Hubbard models are used to construct a simple (static) approximation to the effective impurity potential which is shown to reproduce the exact resonant scattering and bound states in the relevant symmetry channels.

Infrared conductivity of a d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductor with impurity and spin-fluctuation scattering

Calculations are presented of the in-plane far-infrared conductivity of a d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductor, incorporating elastic scattering due to impurities and inelastic scattering due to spin fluctuations. The impurity scattering is modeled by short-range potential scattering with arbitrary phase shift, while scattering due to spin fluctuations is calculated within a weak-coupling Hubbard model picture. The conductivity is characterized by a low-temperature residual Drude feature whose height and weight are controlled by impurity scattering, as well as a broad peak centered at 4 Delta_0 arising from clean-limit inelastic processes. Results are in qualitative agreement with experiment despite missing spectral weight at high energies.

Evidence for a superfluid density in t--J ladders

Applying three independent techniques, we give numerical evidence for a finite superfluid density in isotropic hole-doped t--J ladders: We show the existence of anomalous flux quantization, emphasising the contrasting behaviour to that found in the `Luttinger liquid' regime stabilised at low electron densities; We consider the nature of the low-lying excitation modes, finding the 1-D analog of the superconducting state; And using a density matrix renormalization group approach, we find long range pairing correlations and exponentially decaying spin-spin correlations.

Properties of Odd Gap Superconductors

We discuss the class of superconductors which have pairing correlations which are odd in frequency, as introduced originally by Berezinskii and more recently by Balatsky and Abrahams. As follows from the equations of motion, a natural definition of the thermodynamic order parameter of the odd-pairing state is the expectation value of a composite operator which couples a Cooper pair to a spin or charge fluctuation. We use a model pairing hamiltonian to describe properties of the odd-pairing composite-operator condensate. We show that the superfluid stiffness is positive, we discuss superconductive tunneling with an ordinary superconductor and we derive other thermodynamic and transport properties.
