SPIN AND CHARGE MODES OF THE t-J LADDER

The spin and charge excitations of the t--J ladder are studied by exact diagonalization techniques for several electron densities. The various modes are classified according to their spin (singlet or triplet excitations) and their parity under a reflection with respect to the symmetry axis along the chains and a finite size scaling of the related gaps is performed. At low doping, formation of hole pairs leads to a spin gap for all $J/t$ ratios. This phase is characterized by (at least) one vanishing energy mode {\it only} in the charge bonding channel when $K_x\rightarrow 0$ consistent with the existence of superconducting pairing correlations. At larger doping the spin gap disappears. Although the anti-bonding modes remain gapped, low energy $K_x\sim 0$ and $K_x\sim 2k_F$ spin and charge bonding modes are found consistent with a single band Luttinger scenario. At sufficient low electron density and above a critical value of J/t we also expect another phase of electron pairs with gapped spin excitations.

Spin Dynamics of La_2CuO_4 and the Two-Dimensional Heisenberg Model

The spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ and the spin echo decay rate $1/T_{2G}$ for the 2D Heisenberg model are calculated using quantum Monte Carlo and maximum entropy analytic continuation. The results are compared to recent experiments on La$_2$CuO$_4$, as well as predictions based on the non-linear $σ$-model.

The Doped Two Chain Hubbard Model

The properties of the two-chain Hubbard Model doped away from half-filling are investigated. The charge gap is found to vanish, but a finite spin gap exists over a range of interchain hopping strength $t_\perp$. In this range, there are modified $d_{x^2-y^2}$--like pairing correlations whose strength is correlated with the size of the spin gap. It is found that the pair field correlations are enhanced by the onsite Coulomb interaction U.

Competition Between Antiferromagnetic Order and Spin-Liquid Behavior in the Two-Dimensional Periodic Anderson Model at Half-Filling

We study the two-dimensional periodic Anderson model at half-filling using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) techniques. The ground state undergoes a magnetic order-disorder transition as a function of the effective exchange coupling between the conduction and localized bands. Low-lying spin and charge excitations are determined using the maximum entropy method to analytically continue the QMC data. At finite temperature we find a competition between the Kondo effect and antiferromagnetic order which develops in the localized band through Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions.

Neutron scattering in a d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductor with strong impurity scattering and Coulomb correlations

We calculate the spin susceptibility at and below T_c for a d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductor with resonant impurity scattering and Coulomb correlations. Both the impurity scattering and the Coulomb correlations act to maintain peaks in the spin susceptibility, as a function of momentum, at the Brillouin zone edge. These peaks would otherwise be suppressed by the superconducting gap. The predicted amount of suppression of the spin susceptibility in the superconducting state compared to the normal state is in qualitative agreement with results from recent magnetic neutron scattering experiments on La_{1.86}Sr_{0.14}CuO_4 for momentum values at the zone edge and along the zone diagonal. The predicted peak widths in the superconducting state, however, are narrower than those in the normal state, a narrowing which has not been observed experimentally.

The Density Matrix Renormalization Group for Fermion Systems

We discuss techniques of the density matrix renormalization group and their application to interacting fermion systems in more than one dimension. We show numerical results for equal--time spin--spin and singlet pair field correlation functions, as well as the spin gap for the Hubbard model on two chains. The system is a gapped spin liquid at half--filling and shows weak algebraic $d$-wave--like pair field correlations away from half--filling.

Binding of Holes to Magnetic Impurities in a Strongly Correlated System

The effect of a magnetic (S=1/2) impurity coupled to a 2D system of correlated electrons (described by the t--J model) is studied by exact diagonalisations. It is found that, if the exchange coupling of the impurity with the neighboring spins is ferromagnetic or weakly antiferromagnetic, an extra hole can form bound states of different spatial symmetries with the impurity extending to a few lattice spacings. The binding energy is maximum when the impurity is completely decoupled (vacancy) and vanishes for an antiferromagnetic coupling exceeding $\sim 0.3 J$. Several peaks appear in the single hole spectral function below the lower edge of the quasiparticle band as signatures of the d-, s- and p-wave boundstates.

Resonating Valence Bond Theory of Coupled Heisenberg Chains

Using numerical results from a density matrix renormalization group study as a guide, we develop a resonating valence bond (RVB) theory for coupled Heisenberg chains. We argue that simple topological effects mandate a short-range RVB description of systems with an even number of chains $n_c$, with a spin gap, short-range correlations, and confinement of topological spin defects. Odd-$n_c$ systems have long-range RVB ground states, no gap, and power-law correlations.

d-Wave Model for Microwave Response of High-Tc Superconductors

We develop a simple theory of the electromagnetic response of a d- wave superconductor in the presence of potential scatterers of arbitrary s-wave scattering strength and inelastic scattering by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. In the clean London limit, the conductivity of such a system may be expressed in "Drude" form, in terms of a frequency-averaged relaxation time. We compare predictions of the theory with recent data on YBCO and BSSCO crystals and on YBCO films. While fits to penetration depth measurements are promising, the low temperature behavior of the measured microwave conductivity appears to be in disagreement with our results. We discuss implications for d-wave pairing scenarios in the cuprate superconductors.

Correlations in a two--chain Hubbard model

Equal time spin--spin and pair field correlation functions are calculated for a two-chain Hubbard model using a density-matrix numerical renormalization group approach. At half-filling, the antiferromagnetic and pair field correlations both decay exponentially with the pair field having a much shorter correlation length. This is consistent with a gapped spin-liquid ground state. Below half--filling, the antiferromagnetic correlations become incommensurate and the spin gap persists. The pair field correlations appear to follow a power law decay which is similar to their non-interacting U=0 behavior.

Order-Disorder Transition in a Two-Layer Quantum Antiferromagnet

We have studied the antiferromagnetic order -- disorder transition occurring at $T=0$ in a 2-layer quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet as the inter-plane coupling is increased. Quantum Monte Carlo results for the staggered structure factor in combination with finite-size scaling theory give the critical ratio $J_c = 2.51 \pm 0.02$ between the inter-plane and in-plane coupling constants. The critical behavior is consistent with the 3D classical Heisenberg universality class. Results for the uniform magnetic susceptibility and the correlation length at finite temperature are compared with recent predictions for the 2+1-dimensional nonlinear $σ$-model. The susceptibility is found to exhibit quantum critical behavior at temperatures significantly higher than the correlation length.

Resonant Impurity Scattering in a Strongly Correlated Electron Model

Scattering by a single impurity introduced in a strongly correlated electronic system is studied by exact diagonalization of small clusters. It is shown that an inert site which is spinless and unable to accomodate holes can give rise to strong resonant scattering. A calculation of the local density of state reveals that, for increasing antiferromagnetic exchange coupling, d, s and p-wave symmetry bound states in which a mobile hole is trapped by the impurity potential induced by a local distortion of the antiferromagnetic background successively pull out from the continuum.

Temperature Derivative of the Superfluid Density in the Attractive Hubbard model

Based on extensions of the grand-canonical Quantum Monte-Carlo algorithm to incorporate magnetic fields, we provide numerical data confirming the existence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in the attractive Hubbard model. Here, we calculate the temperature derivative of the superfluid density, to pin down the transition. Away from half-band filling, the above quantity, shows a response which increases with lattice size at the transition temperature. In contrast, such a signal is not observed for the case of a half-band filling.

Properties of Odd Gap Superconductors

A new class of superconductors with the gap function {\it odd} under time reversal is considered. Some of the physical properties of these superconductors such as the Meissner effect, composite condensate, gapless spectrum and transition from the {\it odd} gap superconductor to the BCS state at lower temperatures are discussed.

Weak-coupling expansions for the attractive Holstein and Hubbard models

Weak-coupling expansions (conserving approximations) are carried out for the attractive Holstein and Hubbard models (on an infinite-dimensional hypercubic lattice) that include all bandstructure and vertex correction effects. Quantum fluctuations are found to renormalize transition temperatures by factors of order unity, but may be incorporated into the superconducting channel of Migdal-Eliashberg theory by renormalizing the phonon frequency and the interaction strength.

Influence of Gap Extrema on the Tunneling Conductance Near an Impurity in an Anisotropic Superconductor

Changes: figures added in postscript form, Eq. (7) and various typos corrected. We examine the effect of an impurity on the nearby tunneling conductance in an anisotropically-gapped superconductor. The variation of the conductance has pronounced spatial dependence which depends strongly on the Fermi surface location of gap extrema. In particular, different gap symmetries produce profoundly different spatial features in the conductance. These effects may be detectable with an STM measurement on the surface of a high-temperature superconductor.

Method for Measuring the Momentum-Dependent Relative Phase of the Superconducting Gap of High-Temperature Superconductors

The phase variation of the superconducting gap over the (normal) Fermi surface of the high-temperature superconductors remains a significant unresolved question. Is the phase of the gap constant, does it change sign, or is it perhaps complex? A detailed answer to this question would provide important constraints on various pairing mechanisms. Here we propose a new method for measuring the relative gap PHASE on the Fermi surface which is direct, is angle-resolved, and probes the bulk. The required experiments involve measuring phonon linewidths in the normal and superconducting state, with resolution available in current facilities. We primarily address the La_1.85Sr_.15CuO_4 material, but also propose a more detailed study of a specific phonon in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8.
