Unconventional sign-reversing superconductivity in LaFeAsO_(1-x)F_x

We argue that the newly discovered superconductivity in a nearly magnetic, Fe-based layered compound is unconventional and mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, though different from the usual superexchange and specific to this compound. This resulting state is an example of extended s-wave pairing with a sign reversal of the order parameter between different Fermi surface sheets. The main role of doping in this scenario is to lower the density of states and suppress the pair-breaking ferromagnetic fluctuations.

Electronic Structure and Doping in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and LiFeAs: Density Functional Calculations

We report density functional calculations of the electronic structure and Fermi surface of the BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and LiFeAs phases including doping via the virtual crystal approximation. The results show that contrary to a rigid band picture, the density of states at the Fermi energy is only weakly doping dependent and that the main effect of doping is a change in the relative sizes of the electron and hole Fermi surfaces as required by Luttinger's theory. This is a consequence of a change in As height with doping, in particular a shift of As towards Fe as holes are introduced in the Fe plane, as might be expected from simple ionic considerations. The main effect of doping is therefore a reduction in the degree of nesting of the Fermi surface. This provides a framework for understanding the approximate electron-hole symmetry in the phase diagrams of the Fe-As based superconductors.

Electronic structure of the iron-based superconductor LaOFeP

The recent discovery of superconductivity in the so-called iron-oxypnictide family of compounds has generated intense interest. The layered crystal structure with transition metal ions in planar square lattice form and the discovery of spin-density-wave order near 130 K seem to hint at a strong similarity with the copper oxide superconductors. A burning current issue is the nature of the ground state of the parent compounds. Two distinct classes of theories have been put forward depending on the underlying band structures: local moment antiferromagnetic ground state for strong coupling approach and itinerant ground state for weak coupling approach. The local moment magnetism approach stresses on-site correlations and proximity to a Mott insulating state and thus the resemblance to cuprates; while the latter approach emphasizes the itinerant electron physics and the interplay between the competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic fluctuations. Such a controversy is partly due to the lack of conclusive experimental information on the electronic structures. Here we report the first angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) investigation of LaOFeP (Tc = 5.9 K), the first reported iron-based superconductor. Our results favor the itinerant ground state, albeit with band renormalization. In addition, our data reveal important differences between these and copper based superconductors.

Fermi surface and van Hove singularities in the itinerant metamagnet Sr3Ru2O7

The low-energy electronic structure of the itinerant metamagnet Sr3Ru2O7 is investigated by angle resolved photoemission and density functional calculations. We find well-defined quasiparticle bands with resolution limited line widths and Fermi velocities up to an order of magnitude lower than in single layer Sr2RuO4. The complete topography, the cyclotron masses and the orbital character of the Fermi surface are determined, in agreement with bulk sensitive de Haas - van Alphen measurements. An analysis of the dxy band dispersion reveals a complex density of states including van Hove singularities (vHs) near the Fermi level; a situation which is favorable for magnetic instabilities.

The challenge of unravelling magnetic properties in LaFeAsO

First principles calculations of magnetic and, to a lesser extent, electronic properties of the novel LaFeAsO-based superconductors show substantial apparent controversy, as opposed to most weakly or strongly correlated materials. Not only do different reports disagree about quantitative values, there is also a schism in terms of interpreting the basic physics of the magnetic interactions in this system. In this paper, we present a systematic analysis using four different first principles methods and show that while there is an unusual sensitivity to computational details, well-converged full-potential all-electron results are fully consistent among themselves. What makes results so sensitive and the system so different from simple local magnetic moments interacting via basic superexchange mechanisms is the itinerant character of the calculated magnetic ground state, where very soft magnetic moments and long-range interactions are characterized by a particular structure in the reciprocal (as opposed to real) space. Therefore, unravelling the magnetic interactions in their full richness remains a challenging, but utterly important task.

Electron Phonon Superconductivity in LaNiOP

We report first principles calculations of the electronic structure, phonon dispersions and electron phonon coupling of LaNiPO. These calculations show that this material can be explained as a conventional electron phonon superconductor in contrast to the FeAs based high temperature superconductors.

LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$: A low carrier density superconductor near itinerant magnetism

Density functional studies of 26K superconducting LaFeAs(O,F) are reported. We find a low carrier density, high density of states, $N(E_F)$ and modest phonon frequencies relative to $T_c$. The high $N(E_F)$ leads to proximity to itinerant magnetism, with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic fluctuations and the balance between these controlled by doping level. Thus LaFeAs(O,F) is in a unique class of high $T_c$ superconductors: high $N(E_F)$ ionic metals near magnetism.

Positron potential and wavefunction in LaFeAsO

We report calculations of the positron potential and wavefunction in LaFeAsO. These calculations show that the positron wavefunction does sample the entire unit cell although it is largest in the interstices of the La layer adjacent to As atoms. The implication is that angular correlation of annihilation radiation (ACAR) is a viable probe of the Fermi surfaces in this material. The results also apply to positive muons, and indicate that these will be localized in the La layer adjacent to As.

Frustration of tilts and A-site driven ferroelectricity in KNbO_3-LiNbO_3 alloys

Density functional calculations for K_{0.5}Li_{0.5}NbO_3 show strong A-site driven ferroelectricity, even though the average tolerance factor is significantly smaller than unity and there is no stereochemically active A-site ion. This is due to the frustration of tilt instabilities by A-site disorder. There are very large off-centerings of the Li ions, which contribute strongly to the anisotropy between the tetragonal and rhombohedral ferroelectric states, yielding a tetragonal ground state even without strain coupling.

Polar Behavior in a Magnetic Perovskite Via A-Site Disorder

We elucidate a mechanism for obtaining polar behavior in magnetic perovskites based on A-site disorder and demonstrate this mechanism by density functional calculations for the double perovskite (La,Lu)MnNiO$_6$ with Lu concentrations at and below 50%. We show that this material combines polar behavior and ferromagnetism. The mechanism is quite general and may be applicable to a wide range of magnetic perovskites.

Optical Properties and Magnetic Field-Induced Phase Transitions in the Ferroelectric State of Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$

We use a combination of optical spectra, first principles calculations, and energy dependent magneto-optical measurements to elucidate the electronic structure and to study the phase diagram of Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$. We find a remarkable interplay of magnetic field and optical properties that reveals additional high magnetic field phases and an unexpected electronic structure which we associate with the strong magneto-dielectric couplings in this material over a wide energy range. Specifically, we observed several prominent magneto-dielectric effects that derive from changes in crystal field environment around Ni spine and cross-tie centers. This effect is consistent with a field-induced modification of local structure. Symmetry-breaking effects are also evident with temperature. We find Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ to be an intermediate gap, local moment band insulator. This electronic structure is particularly favorable for magneto-dielectric couplings, because the material is not subject to the spin charge separation characteristic of strongly correlated large gap Mott insulators, while at the same time remaining a magnetic insulator independent of the particular spin order and temperature.

Cohesion of BaReH$_9$ and BaMnH$_9$: Density Functional Calculations and Prediction of (MnH$_9)^{2-}$ Salts

Density functional calculations are used to calculate the structural and electronic properties of BaReH$_9$ and to analyze the bonding in this compound. The high coordination in BaReH$_9$ is due to bonding between Re 5$d$ states and states of $d$-like symmetry formed from combinations of H $s$ orbitals in the H$_9$ cage. This explains the structure of the material, its short bond lengths and other physical properties, such as the high band gap. We compare with results for hypothetical BaMnH$_9$, which we find to have similar bonding and cohesion to the Re compound. This suggests that it may be possible to synthesize (MnH$_9)^{2-}$ salts. Depending on the particular cation, such salts may have exceptionally high hydrogen contents, in excess of 10 weight %

On kinetic energy stabilized superconductivity in cuprates

The possibility of kinetic energy driven superconductivity in cuprates as was recently found in the $tJ$ model is discussed. We argue that the violation of the virial theorem implied by this result is serious and means that the description of superconductivity within the $tJ$ model is pathological.

Fermi surface and quasiparticle excitations of Sr$_{2}$RhO$_{4}$

The electronic structure of the layered 4$d$ transition metal oxide Sr$_{2}$RhO$_{4}$ is investigated by angle resolved photoemission. We find well-defined quasiparticle excitations with a highly anisotropic dispersion, suggesting a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi liquid like ground state. Markedly different from the isostructural Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, only two bands with dominant Rh 4$d_{xz,zy}$ character contribute to the Fermi surface. A quantitative analysis of the photoemission quasiparticle band structure is in excellent agreement with bulk data. In contrast, it is found that state-of-the-art density functional calculations in the local density approximation differ significantly from the experimental findings.

Origin of ferromagnetism in Cs$_2$AgF$_4$: importance of Ag - F covalency

The magnetic nature of Cs$_{2}$AgF$_{4}$, an isoelectronic and isostructural analogue of La$_2$CuO$_4$, is analyzed using density functional calculations. The ground state is found to be ferromagnetic and nearly half metallic. We find strong hybridization of Ag-$d$ and F-$p$ states. Substantial moments reside on the F atoms, which is unusual for the halides and reflects the chemistry of the Ag(II) ions in this compound. This provides the mechanism for ferromagnetism, which we find to be itinerant in character, a result of a Stoner instability enhanced by Hund's coupling on the F.

We show using density functional calculations that the small $e_g'$ Fermi surfaces in Na$_x$CoO$_2$ are destroyed by Na disorder. This provides a means to resolve the prediction of these sections in band structure calculations with their non-observation in angle resolved photoemission experiments.

Magneto-Dielectric Effect in the S = 1/2 Quasi-Two Dimensional Antiferromagnet K2V3O8

We report the optical and magneto-optical properties of K2V3O8, an S=1/2 quasi-two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Local spin density approximation electronic structure calculations are used to assign the observed excitations and analyze the field dependent features. Two large magneto-optical effects, centered at ~1.19 and 2.5 eV, are attributed to field-induced changes in the V 4+ d to d on-site excitations due to modification of the local crystal field environment of the VO5 square pyramids with applied magnetic field. Taken together, the evidence for a soft lattice, the presence of vibrational fine structure on the sharp 1.19 eV magneto-optical feature, and the fact that these optical excitations are due to transitions from a nearly pure spin polarized V d state to hybridized states involving both V and O, suggest that the magneto-dielectric effect in K2V3O8 is driven by strong lattice coupling.
