Electronic structure and bond competition in the polar magnet PbVO$_3$

Density functional electronic structure studies of tetragonal PbVO$_3$ are reported. The results show a an important role for both Pb 6$p$ - O 2$p$ and V $d$ - O $p$ bonding, with an interplay between these. This is discussed in relation to the possibility of obtaining magnetoelectric behavior.

Electronic Structure and Bulk Spin Valve Behavior in Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$

We report density functional calculations of the magnetic properties and Fermiology of Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$. The ground state consists of ferromagnetic bilayers, stacked antiferromagnetically. The bilayers are almost but not exactly half-metallic. In the ferromagnetic state opposite spin polarizations are found for in-plane and out-of-plane transport. Relatively high out of plane conductivity is found for the majority spin, which is relatively weakly conductive in-plane. In the ground state in-plane quantities are essentially the same, but the out of plane transport is strongly reduced.

Severe Fermi Surface Reconstruction at a Metamagnetic-Transition in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$ (for $0.2 \leq x \leq 0.5$)

We report an electrical transport study in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$RuO$_4$ single crystals at high magnetic fields ($B$). For $x =0.2$, the Hall constant $R_{xy}$ decreases sharply at an anisotropic metamagnetic (MM) transition reaching its value for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ at high fields. A sharp decrease in the $A$ coefficient of the resistivity $T^2$-term and a change in the structure of the angular magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) for $B$ rotating in the planes, confirms the reconstruction of the Fermi surface (FS). Our observations and LDA calculations indicate a strong dependence of the FS on the Ca concentration and suggest the coexistence of itinerant and localized electronic states in single layered ruthenates.

Why the magnetic interactions in Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ are 3D

The puzzle of 3D magnetic interactions in the structurally 2D layered oxide Na$_{x}$CoO$_2$ is addressed using first principles calculations and analysis of the exchange mechanisms. The calculations agree with recent neutron results, favoring AFM stacking of FM planes. Superexchange via direct O-O hopping and through intermediate Na $sp^2$ hybrids couples each Co to its nearest and six \textit{next}-nearest interplanar neighbors equally. The individual exchange constants are rather 2D, like the lattice itself, but due to multiple c-axis exchange paths, the magnetism becomes effectively 3D.

Optical Properties and Correlation Effects in NaxCoO2

We have calculated the optical spectra of Na$_{x}$CoO$_2$ for $x$=0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 within the LDA. We compare our results to available experimental data and show that the important features and trends are reproduced well, but there is a nearly uniform shift of peak positions and poor agreement in intensities. We show, through application of a simple model, that these differences can be attributed to overhybridization between Co and O orbitals and spin fluctuations which renormalize the bandwidth. Applying the LDA+U procedure shifts the optical peaks further from their experimental locations, indicating that this method of incorporating correlation effects is ill-suited for the case NaxCoO2.

A Tight-Binding Investigation of the NaxCoO2 Fermi Surface

We perform an orthogonal basis tight binding fit to an LAPW calculation of paramagnetic Na$_x$CoO$_2$ for several dopings. The optimal position of the apical oxygen at each doping is resolved, revealing a non-trivial dependence of the band structure and Fermi surface on oxygen height. We find that the small e$_{g'}$ hole pockets are preserved throughout all investigated dopings and discuss some possible reasons for the lack of experimental evidence for these Fermi sheets.

Comparing the Weighted Density Approximation with the LDA and GGA for Ground State Properties of Ferroelectric Perovskites

First-principles calculations within the weighted density approximation (WDA) were performed for ground state properties of ferroelectric perovskites PbTiO$_3$, BaTiO$_3$, SrTiO$_3$, KNbO$_3$ and KTaO$_3$. We used the plane-wave pseudopotential method, a pair distribution function $G$ based on the uniform electron gas, and shell partitioning. Comparing with the local density approximation (LDA) and the general gradient approximation (GGA), we found that the WDA significantly improves the equilibrium volume of these materials in cubic symmetry over both the LDA and GGA; Ferroelectric instabilities calculated by the WDA agree with the LDA and GGA very well; At the experimental ferroelectric lattice, optimized atom positions by the WDA are in good agreement with measured data; However the WDA overestimates the strain of tetragonal PbTiO$_3$ at experimental volume; The WDA overestimates the volume of fully relaxed structures, but the GGA results are even worse. Some calculations were also done with other models for $G$. It is found that a $G$ with longer range behavior yields improved relaxed structures. Possible avenues for improving the WDA are discussed.

Stability and electronic structure of the complex K$_2$PtCl$_6$ structure-type hydrides

The stability and bonding of the ternary complex K$_2$PtCl$_6$ structure hydrides is discussed using first principles density functional calculations. The cohesion is dominated by ionic contributions, but ligand field effects are important, and are responsible for the 18-electron rule. Similarities to oxides are discussed in terms of the electronic structure. However, phonon calculations for Sr$_2$RuH$_6$ also show differences, particularly in the polarizability of the RuH$_6$ octahedra. Nevertheless, the yet to be made compounds Pb$_2$RuH$_6$ and Be$_2$FeH$_6$ are possible ferroelectrics. The electronic structure and magnetic properties of the decomposition product, FeBe$_2$ are reported. Implications of the results for H storage are discussed.

Electronic Structure and Electron-Phonon Coupling in the 18K Superconductor Y2C3

The electronic structure and electron-phonon coupling in Y2C3 is investigated using density functional calculations. We find that the Fermi level falls in a manifold of mixed character derived from Y d states and antibonding states associated with the C dimers in the structure. Calculations of the electron-phonon coupling for Y and C modes show that the former provide most of the coupling. Modes associated with C-C bond stretching have large matrix elements, but make small contributions to the coupling because of their high phonon frequencies. Substantial electron doping of the C-C antibonding states would yield a large increase in the coupling and critical temperature, perhaps to values comparable to MgB2. However, it seems unlikely that a modification of Y2C3 with much higher filling of the C-C antibonding states can be stabilized.

Nesting, spin-fluctuations, and odd-gap superconductivity in NaxCoO2 yH2O

We have calculated the one-electron susceptibility of hydrated NaxCoO2 and find strong nesting nearly commensurate with a 2X2 superstructure. The nesting involves about 70% of all electrons at the Fermi level and is robust with respect to doping. This nesting creates a tendency to a charge density wave compatible with the charge order often seen at x approx 0.5, which is usually ascribed to electrostatic repulsion of Na ions. In the spin channel, it gives rise to strong spin-fluctuations, which should be important for superconductivity. The superconducting state most compatible with this nesting structure is an odd-gap triplet s-wave state.

Metallic "Ferroelectricity" in the Pyrochlore Cd2Re2O7

A class of materials known as ``ferroelectric metals'' was discussed theoretically by Anderson and Blount in 1965 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 14, 217 (1965)], but to date no examples of this class have been reported. Here we present measurements of the elastic moduli of Cd2Re2O7 through the 200 K cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition. A Landau analysis of the moduli reveals that the transition is consistent with Cd2Re2O7 being classified as a ``ferroelectric metal'' in the weaker sense described by Anderson and Blount (loss of a center of symmetry). First-principles calculations of the lattice instabilities indicate that the dominant lattice instability corresponds to a two-fold degenerate mode with Eu symmetry, and that motions of the O ions forming the O octahedra dominate the energetics of the transition.

Density Functional Calculations near Ferromagnetic Quantum Critical Points

We discuss the application of the density functional theory in the local density approximation (LDA) near a ferromagnetic quantum critical point. The LDA fails to describe the critical fluctuations in this regime. This provides a fingerprint of a materials near ferromagnetic quantum critical points: overestimation of the tendency to magnetism in the local density approximation. This is in contrast to the typical, but not universal, tendency of the LDA to underestimate the tendency to magnetism in strongly Hubbard correlated materials. We propose a method for correcting the local density calculations by including critical spin fluctuations. This is based on (1) Landau expansion for the free energy, evaluated within the LDA, (2) lowest order expansion of the RPA susceptibility in LDA and (3) extraction of the amplitude of the relevant (critical) fluctuations by applying the fluctuation-dissipation theorem to the difference between a quantum-critical system and a reference system removed from the quantum critical point. We illustrate some of the aspects of this by the cases of Ni3Al and Ni3Ga, which are very similar metals on opposite sides of a ferromagnetic quantum critical point. LDA calculations predict that Ni3Ga is the more magnetic system, but we find that due to differences in the band structure, fluctuation effects are larger in Ni3Ga, explaining the fact that experimentally it is the less magnetic of the two materials.

Electronic Structure of Calcium Hexaboride within the Weighted Density Approximation

We report calculations of the electronic structure of CaB$_6$ using the weighted density approximation (WDA) to density functional theory. We find a semiconducting band structure with a sizable gap, in contrast to local density approximation (LDA) results, but in accord with recent experimental data. In particular, we find an $X$-point band gap of 0.8 eV. The WDA correction of the LDA error in describing the electronic structure of CaB$_6$ is discussed in terms of the orbital character of the bands and the better cancelation of self-interactions within the WDA.

Electronic Structure of the Complex Hydride NaAlH4

Density functional calculations of the electronic structure of the complex hydride NaAlH4 and the reference systems NaH and AlH3 are reported. We find a substantially ionic electronic structure for NaAlH4, which emphasizes the importance of solid state effects in this material. The relaxed hydrogen positions in NaAlH4 are in good agreement with recent experiment. The electronic structure of AlH3 is also ionic. Implications for the binding of complex hydrides are discussed.

Magnetism, Critical Fluctuations and Susceptibility Renormalization in Pd

Some of the most popular ways to treat quantum critical materials, that is, materials close to a magnetic instability, are based on the Landau functional. The central quantity of such approaches is the average magnitude of spin fluctuations, which is very difficult to measure experimentally or compute directly from the first principles. We calculate the parameters of the Landau functional for Pd and use these to connect the critical fluctuations beyond the local-density approximation and the band structure.

Why Ni$_3$Al is an itinerant ferromagnet but Ni$_3$Ga is not

Ni$_3$Al and Ni$_3$Ga are closely related materials on opposite sides of a ferromagnetic quantum critical point. The Stoner factor of Ni is virtually the same in both compounds and the density of states is larger in Ni$_3$Ga. So, according to the Stoner theory, it should be more magnetic, and, in LDA calculations, it is. However, experimentally, it is a paramagnet, while Ni$_3$Al is an itinerant ferromagnet. We show that the critical spin fluctuations are stronger than in Ni$_3$Ga, due to a weaker q-dependence of the susceptibility, and this effect is strong enough to reverse the trend. The approach combines LDA calculations with the Landau theory and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem using the same momentum cut-off for both materials. The calculations provide evidence for strong, beyond LDA, spin fluctuations associated with the critical point in both materials, but stronger in Ni$_3$Ga than in Ni$_3$Al.

Spin Fluctuations and the Magnetic Phase Diagram of ZrZn2

The magnetic properties of the weak itinerant ferromagnet ZrZn_2 are analyzed using Landau theory based on a comparison of density functional calculations and experimental data as a function of field and pressure. We find that the magnetic properties are strongly affected by the nearby quantum critical point, even at zero pressure; LDA calculations neglecting quantum critical spin fluctuations overestimate the magnetization by a factor of approximately three. Using renormalized Landau theory, we extract pressure dependence of the fluctuation amplitude. It appears that a simple scaling based on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem provides a good description of this pressure dependence.
