The effects of high-temperature ion-irradiation on early-stage grain boundaries serrations formation in Ni-based alloys

Nickel based superalloys display outstanding properties such as excellent creep strength, remarkable fracture toughness parameters, and corrosion resistance. For this reason, Ni based materials are considered as materials dedicated to the IV generation of nuclear reactors. Although these materials seem promising candidates, their radiation resistance and impact of radiation damage on the deformation mechanism are still not fully understood. In this work, two commercially available nickel based alloys, Hastelloy X and Haynes 230, were investigated. Structural and mechanical properties have been described by means of SEM and EBSD, TEM, and nanoindentation tests. Radiation damage has been performed by Ar ion with energy 320keV with two doses up to 12dpa. Obtained results have revealed a hardening effect for both levels of damage. However, more intensive effects were observed for Hastelloy X. Moreover, a significant change in precipitates morphology in Hastelloy X has been observed. It has been proposed that structural differences between both alloys determine the type of occurring radiation induced processes. Excess energy deposited into materials structure during ion irradiation can lower the temperature of nucleation of high temperature phases, which initiates the formation of grain boundary serrations.

Nanoindentation responses of Fe-Cr alloys from room temperature to 600 °C

In this work, the evolution of nanomechanical properties was studied systematically as a function of temperature, chemical, and microstructural complexity of different Fe-based alloys. Experiments were performed at different temperatures (room temperature, 200 C, 400 C, 600 C) using the nanoindentation technique on low activation Fe9Cr-1WVTa (Eurofer97), model Fe-9Cr-NiSiP, Fe-9Cr alloys, and pure iron samples, followed by microstructural observations. The results show varying softening and hardening effects depending on the experimental temperature, demonstrating Portevin-Le-Chatelier effect, i.e., dynamic strain aging phenomenon in model alloys. Sources of the dynamic strain aging instabilities were traced back to the interaction between dislocations and alloying elements such as interstitial carbon and substitutional chromium. The materials undergo dynamic recovery and recrystallization below the regions of high-temperature indentation depending on the pre-indentation dislocation density and the alloy composition. Our findings help in the understanding of the structure and mechanical property relationship in complex Eurofer97 alloy at high-temperatures for potential nuclear applications as structural materials.

Self-ion irradiation effects on nanoindentation-induced plasticity of crystalline iron: A joint experimental and computational study

In this paper, experimental work is supported by multi-scale numerical modeling to investigate nanomechanical response of pristine and ion irradiated with Fe2+ ions with energy 5 MeV high purity iron specimens by nanoindentation and Electron Backscatter Diffraction. The appearance of a sudden displacement burst that is observed during the loading process in the load-displacement curves is connected with increased shear stress in a small subsurface volume due to dislocation slip activation and mobilization of pre-existing dislocations by irradiation. The molecular dynamics (MD) and 3D-discrete dislocation dynamics (3D-DDD) simulations are applied to model geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) nucleation mechanisms at early stages of nanoindentation test; providing an insight to the mechanical response of the material and its plastic instability and are in a qualitative agreement with GNDs density mapping images. Finally, we noted that dislocations and defects nucleated are responsible the material hardness increase, as observed in recorded load-displacement curves and pop-ins analysis.

Search for the decay $B_s^0\to J/ψπ^0$ at Belle experiment

We have analyzed 121.4 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at the $Υ(5S)$ resonance by the Belle experiment using the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider to search for the decay $B_s^0\to J/ψπ^0$. We observe no signal and report an upper limit on the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0\to J/ψπ^0)$ of $1.21\times 10^{-5}$ at 90\% confidence level. This result is the most stringent, improving the previous bound by two orders of magnitude.

Search for Two-Body $B$ Meson Decays to $Λ^{0}$ and $Ω^{(*)0}_{c}$

We report the results of the first search for Standard Model and baryon-number-violating two-body decays of the neutral $B$ mesons to $Λ^{0}$ and $Ω^{(*)0}_c$ using 711~${\rm fb^{-1}}$ of data collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. We observe no evidence of signal from any such decays and set 95\% confidence-level upper limits on the products of $B^0$ and $\bar{B}^0$ branching fractions for these two-body decays with $\mathcal{B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to π^+ Ω^-)$ in the range between 9.5~$\times 10^{-8}$ and 31.2~$\times 10^{-8}$.

Search for baryon and lepton number violating decays $\boldsymbol{D \rightarrow p\ell}$

We search for the baryon and lepton number violating charm decays, $D \rightarrow p\ell$, where $D$ is either a $D^0$ or a $\overline{D}^0$ and $\ell$ is a muon or an electron, using a data sample of $921\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. In the absence of significant signals, we set upper limits on the branching fractions in the range $(5 - 8) \times 10^{-7}$ at a 90\% confidence level, depending on the decay mode.

Search for a pentaquark state decaying into $pJ/\psi$ in $\Upsilon(1,2S)$ inclusive decays at Belle

Using the data samples of 102 million $\Upsilon(1S)$ and 158 million $\Upsilon(2S)$ events collected by the Belle detector, we search for a pentaquark state in the $pJ/\psi$ final state from $\Upsilon(1,2S)$ inclusive decays. Here, the charge-conjugate $\bar{p}J/\psi$ is included. We observe clear $pJ/\psi$ production in $\Upsilon(1,2S)$ decays and measure the branching fractions to be $B[\Upsilon(1S) \to pJ/\psi + anything] = [8.1 \pm 0.6(stat.) \pm 0.5(syst.)] \times 10^{-5}$ and $B[\Upsilon(2S) \to pJ/\psi + anything] = [4.3 \pm 0.5(stat.) \pm 0.4(syst.)] \times 10^{-5}$. We also measure the cross section of inclusive $pJ/\psi$ production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation to be $\sigma(e^+e^- \to pJ/\psi + anything) = [108 \pm 11 (stat.) \pm 6(syst.)]$~fb at $\sqrt{s} = 10.52~\hbox{GeV}$ using an 89.5~fb$^{-1}$ continuum data sample. There is no significant $P_c(4312)^+$, $P_c(4440)^+$ or $P_c(4457)^+$ signal found in the $pJ/\psi$ final states in $\Upsilon(1,2S)$ inclusive decays. We determine the upper limits of $B[\Upsilon(1,2S)\to P_c^{+} + anything] \cdot B(P_c^{+}\to pJ/\psi)$ to be at the $10^{-6}$ level.

Atomistic-Level Analysis of Nanoindentation-Induced Plasticity in Arc--Melted NiFeCrCo Alloys: The role of stacking faults

Concentrated solid solution alloys (CSAs) have attracted attention for their promising properties; however, current manufacturing methods face challenges in complexity, high costs, and limited scalability, raising concerns about industrial viability. The prevalent technique, arc melting, yields high-purity samples with complex shapes. In this study, we explore nanoindentation tests at room temperature where arc-melted samples exhibit larger grain sizes, diminishing the effects of grain boundaries on the results. Motivated by these findings, our investigation focuses on the atomistic-level exploration of plasticity mechanisms, specifically dislocation nucleation and propagation during nanoindentation tests. The intricate chemistry of NiFeCrCo CSA influences pile-ups and slip traces, aiming to elucidate plastic deformation by considering both pristine and pre-existing stacking fault tetrahedra. Our analysis scrutinizes dynamic deformation processes, defect nucleation, and evolution, complemented by stress-strain and dislocation densities-strain curves illustrating the hardening mechanism of defective materials. Additionally, we examine surface morphology and plastic deformation through atomic shear strain and displacement mappings. This integrated approach provides insights into the complex interplay between material structure and mechanical behavior, paving the way for an enhanced understanding and potential advancements in CSA applications.

Search for the semileptonic decays $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0\ell^+\ell^-$ at Belle

Using the full data sample of 980 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider, we report the results of the first search for the rare semileptonic decays $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0\ell^+\ell^-$ ($\ell=e$ or $μ)$. No significant signals are observed in the $Ξ^0\ell^+\ell^-$ invariant-mass distributions. Taking the decay $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+$ as the normalization mode, we report 90\% credibility upper limits on the branching fraction ratios ${\cal{B}} (Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 e^+ e^-) / {\cal{B}}(Ξ_c^0\to Ξ^-π^+) < 6.7 \times 10^{-3}$ and ${\cal{B}} (Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 μ^+ μ^-) / {\cal{B}}(Ξ_c^0\to Ξ^-π^+) < 4.3 \times 10^{-3}$ based on the phase-space assumption for signal decays. The 90\% credibility upper limits on the absolute branching fractions of ${\cal{B}} (Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 e^+ e^-)$ and ${\cal{B}} (Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 μ^+ μ^-)$ are found to be $9.9 \times 10^{-5}$ and $6.5 \times 10^{-5}$, respectively.

First Simultaneous Determination of Inclusive and Exclusive $\left|V_{ub}\right|$

The first simultaneous determination of the absolute value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{ub}$ using inclusive and exclusive decays is performed with the full Belle data set at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 fb${}^{-1}$. We analyze collision events in which one $B$ meson is fully reconstructed in hadronic modes. This allows for the reconstruction of the hadronic $X_u$ system of the semileptonic $b \to u \ell \bar ν_\ell$ decay. We separate exclusive $B \to π\, \ell\, \bar ν_{\ell}$ decays from other inclusive $B \to X_u \, \ell\, \bar ν_{\ell}$ and backgrounds with a two-dimensional fit, that utilizes the number of charged pions in the $X_u$ system and the four-momentum transfer $q^2$ between the $B$ and $X_u$ system. Combining our measurement with information from lattice QCD and QCD calculations of the inclusive partial rate as well as external experimental information on the shape of the $B \to π\, \ell\, \bar ν_{\ell}$ form factor, we determine $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{excl.}} \right| = (3.78 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.14)\times 10^{-3}$ and $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{incl.}} \right| = (3.88 \pm 0.20 \pm 0.31 \pm 0.09)\times 10^{-3}$, respectively, with the uncertainties being the statistical error, systematic errors, and theory errors. The ratio of $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{excl.}} \right| / \left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{incl.}} \right| = 0.97 \pm 0.12$ is compatible with unity.

Study of the muon decay-in-flight in the $τ^-\toμ^-\barν_μν_τ$ decay to measure the Michel parameter $ξ^\prime$

We present the first measurement of the Michel parameter $ξ^\prime$ in the $τ^-\toμ^-\barν_μν_τ$ decay using the full data sample of $988\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The method is based on the reconstruction of the $μ^- \to e^- \barν_eν_μ$ decay-in-flight in the Belle central drift chamber and relies on the correlation between muon spin and its daughter electron momentum. We study the main sources of the background that can imitate the signal decay, such as kaon and pion decays-in-flight and charged particle scattering on the detector material. Highly efficient methods of their suppression are developed and applied to select 165 signal-candidate events. We obtain $ξ^\prime=0.22\pm0.94\pm0.42$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, and the second one is systematic. The result is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of $ξ^\prime=1$.

First measurement of the Michel parameter $ξ^\prime$ in the $τ^-\toμ^-\barν_μν_τ$ decay at Belle

We report the first measurement of the Michel parameter $ξ^\prime$ in the $τ^-\toμ^-\barν_μν_τ$ decay with a new method proposed just recently. The measurement is based on the reconstruction of the $τ^-\toμ^-\barν_μν_τ$ events with subsequent muon decay-in-flight in the Belle central drift chamber. The analyzed data sample of $988\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector corresponds to approximately $912\times10^6$ $τ^+ τ^-$ pairs. We measure $ξ^\prime=0.22\pm0.94(\text{stat})\pm0.42(\text{syst})$, which is in agreement with the standard model prediction of $ξ^\prime=1$. Statistical uncertainty dominates in this study, being a limiting factor, while systematic uncertainty is well under control. Our analysis proved the practicability of this promising method and its prospects for further precise measurement in future experiments.

Study of the lineshape of $X(3872)$ using $B$ decays to $D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}K$

We present a study of the $X(3872)$ lineshape in the decay $B \to X(3872)K\to D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}K$ using a data sample of $772\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The peak near the threshold in the $D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}$ invariant mass spectrum is fitted using a relativistic Breit-Wigner lineshape. We determine the mass and width parameters to be $m = 3873.71 ^{+0.56}_{-0.50} ({\rm stat}) \pm0.13 ({\rm syst}) ~{\rm MeV}/c^2$ and $Γ_0 = 5.2 ^{+2.2}_{-1.5} ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.4 ({\rm syst})~{\rm MeV}$, respectively. The branching fraction is found to be ${\cal B} (B^+\to X(3872)K^+) \times {\cal{B}}(X(3872) \to D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}) = (0.97 ^{+0.21}_{-0.18} ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.10 ({\rm syst})) \times 10^{-4}$. The signal from $B^0$ decays is observed for the first time with $5.2σ$ significance, and the ratio of branching fractions between charged and neutral $B$ decays is measured to be ${\cal B}(B^0\to X(3872)K^0)/{\cal B}(B^+ \to X(3872)K^+) = 1.34^{+0.47}_{-0.40} ({\rm stat}) ^{+0.10}_{-0.12} ({\rm syst})$. The peak is also studied using a Flatté lineshape. We determine the lower limit on the $D\overline{D}{}^{*}$ coupling constant $g$ to be $0.075$ at 95% credibility in the parameter region where the ratio of $g$ to the mass difference from the $D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}$ threshold is equal to $-15.11~{\rm GeV}^{-1}$, as measured by LHCb.

Mechanical behavior of ion-irradiated ODS RAF steels strengthened with different types of refractory oxides

In the present work, authors focused on verifying structural and mechanical properties of Oxide Dispersed Strengthening (ODS) steels strengthened by three different types of refractory oxides submitted to ion-irradiation. Three materials strengthened with Y2O3 or Al2O3 or ZrO2 were produced by mechanical alloying and Spark Plasma Sintering technique. Specimens have been submitted to high energy Ar-ion irradiation at room temperature with three fluences. This procedure allowed to generate strongly damaged zone with a thickness of 230nm. SEM/EBSD and TEM observations, GIXRD analysis, and nanoindentation tests have been included in examination of modified layers. Investigation revealed alteration of structural and mechanical features as a result of Ar-irradiation. Obtained results showed a strong correlation between the strengthening oxide and materials' behavior under radiation damage. It has been proved that below 1x1015ions/cm2 mechanical properties in the modified layer of all materials are very similar. Reported behavior may be related to the efficient annealing of the radiation defect process. Above this limit, significant differences between the materials are visible. It is believed that described phenomenon is directly related to the presence of the structural features and their capacity to act as defect sinks. Consequently, type of dominant mechanisms occurring in modified layer is proposed.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of mechanically-alloyed CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloys using low ball-to-powder ratio

High-entropy alloys are extensively studied due to their very promising properties. However manufacturing methods currently used to prepare HEAs are complicated, costly, and likely non-industrially scalable processes. This limits their evolution and poses questions regarding the material's applicability in the future. Considering the abovementioned point, we developed a novel methodology for efficient HEA production using a low ball-to-powder ratio (BPR). Using different milling times, we manufactured four HEA powder precursors using a BPR of 5:1, which were later sintered via the Spark Plasma Sintering technique and heat treated. Microstructural characterization was performed by optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy equipped with EDS and EBSD detectors, and X-ray diffraction. Mechanical properties were measured using nano and microhardness techniques. In this work, we follow the structural evolution of the material and connect it with the strengthening effect as a function of milling time. Furthermore, we discuss the impact of different sintering and annealing conditions, proving that HEAs characterized by high mechanical properties may be manufactured using low BPR.

Search for rare decays $B^{+} \to D_{s}^{(\ast)+}η$, $D_{s}^{(\ast)+}\bar{K}^{0}$, $D^{+}η$, and $D^{+}K^{0}$

We present a study of rare decay modes $B^{+} \to D_{s}^{+}h^{0}$, $B^{+} \to D_{s}^{\ast+}h^{0}$, and $B^{+} \to D^{+}h^{0}$, where $h^{0}$ denotes the neutral mesons $η$ or $K^{0}$, using a data sample of $(772 \pm 10 ) \times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ events produced at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. The data were collected by the Belle detector operating at the asymmetric-energy KEKB collider. We observe no evidence for these decays, so we provide upper limits at the 90$\%$ confidence level on the branching fractions of $B^{+} \to D_{s}^{+}h^{0}$, $D_{s}^{\ast+}h^{0}$, and $D^{+}h^{0}$ decay modes. Along with rare decay modes, we report improved measurements of the color-suppressed decay branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to D^{0}η)$ = (26.6 $\pm$ 1.2 $\pm$ 2.1) $\times$ $10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to D^{0}\bar{K}^{0})$ = (5.6 $\pm$ 0.5 $\pm$ 0.2) $\times$ $10^{-5}$.
