On the noise-resolution duality, Heisenberg uncertainty and Shannon's information

Several variations of the Heisenberg uncertainty inequality are derived on the basis of "noise-resolution duality" recently proposed by the authors. The same approach leads to a related inequality that provides an upper limit for the information capacity of imaging systems in terms of the number of imaging quanta (particles) used in the experiment. These results can be useful in the context of biomedical imaging constrained by the radiation dose delivered to the sample, or in imaging (e.g. astronomical) problems under "low light" conditions.

Diffraction catastrophes threaded by quantized vortex skeletons caused by atom-optical aberrations induced in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose a nonlinear atom-optics experiment to create diffraction catastrophes threaded by quantized vortex skeletons in Bose-Einstein condensed matter waves. We show how atom-optical aberrations induced in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates evolve into specific caustic structures due to imperfect focusing. Vortex skeletons, whose cross-sections are staggered vortex lattices, are observed to nucleate inside the universal diffraction catastrophes. Our observations shed further light on the structure and dynamics of Bose-novae and suggest applications of matter wave diffraction catastrophes, including detection of the order parameter pairing symmetry in cold gas experiments.

Proposal for Electron Quantum Spin Talbot Effect

We propose a spin polarized Talbot effect for an electron beam scattered from a grating of magnetic nanostructures. Existing periodic magnetic nanostructures can be used in conjunction with electron-beam illumination to create a spin polarized replica of the transversely periodic exit surface beam a Talbot length away. Experiments have been proposed to verify the effect in a two dimensional electron gas and an atomically flat surface by spin polarized scanning probe microscopy. This effect provides a new route to modulate electron spin distributions in two dimensional space.

Re-sampling of inline holographic images for improved reconstruction resolution

Digital holographic microscopy based on Gabor in-line holography is a well-known method to reconstruct both the amplitude and phase of small objects. To reconstruct the image of an object from its hologram, obtained under illumination by monochromatic scalar waves, numerical calculations of Fresnel integrals are required. To improve spatial resolution in the resulting reconstruction, we re-sample the holographic data before application of the reconstruction algorithm. This procedure amounts to inverting an interpolated Fresnel diffraction image to recover the object. The advantage of this method is demonstrated on experimental data, for the case of visible-light Gabor holography of a resolution grid and a gnat wing.
