Single-layer tensor network study of the Heisenberg model with chiral interactions on a kagome lattice

We study the antiferromagnetic kagome Heisenberg model with additional scalar-chiral interaction by using the infinite projected entangled-pair state (iPEPS) ansatz. We discuss in detail the implementation of optimization algorithm in the framework of the single-layer tensor network based on the corner-transfer matrix technique. Our benchmark based on the full-update algorithm shows that the single-layer algorithm is stable, which leads to the same level of accuracy as the double-layer ansatz but with much less computation time. We further apply this algorithm to study the nature of the kagome Heisenberg model with a scalar-chiral interaction by computing the bond dimension scaling of magnetization, bond energy difference, chiral order parameter and correlation length. In particular, we find that for strong chiral coupling the correlation length, which is extracted from the transfer matrix, saturates to a finite value for large bond dimension, representing a gapped spin-liquid state. Further comparison with density matrix renormalization group results supports that our iPEPS faithfully represents the time-reversal symmetry breaking chiral state. Our iPEPS simulation results shed new light on constructing PEPS for describing gapped chiral topological states.

Randomness induced spin-liquid-like phase in the spin-$1/2$ $J_1 - J_2$ triangular Heisenberg model

We study the effects of bond randomness in the spin-$1/2$ $J_1-J_2$ triangular Heisenberg model using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group. With increasing bond randomness, we identify a randomness induced spin-liquid-like phase without any magnetic order, dimer order, spin glass order, or valence-bond glass order. The finite-size scaling of gaps suggests the gapless nature of both spin triplet and singlet excitations, which is further supported by the broad continuum of dynamical spin structure factor. By studying the bipartite entanglement spectrum of the system on cylinder geometry, we identify the features of the low-lying entanglement spectrum in the spin-liquid-like phase, which may distinguish this randomness induced spin-liquid-like phase and the intrinsic spin liquid phase in the clean $J_1 - J_2$ triangular Heisenberg model. We further discuss the nature of this spin-liquid-like phase and the indication of our results for understanding spin-liquid-like materials with triangular-lattice structure.

Charge Density Wave in a Doped Kondo Chain

We report the existence of the charge density wave (CDW) in the ground state of 1D Kondo lattice model at the filling of n=0.75 in the weak coupling region. The CDW is driven by the effective Coulomb repulsion mediated by the localized spins. Based on our numerical results using the density matrix renormalization group method, we show that the CDW phase appears in the paramagnetic region previously known as the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. The emergence of this phase serves as an example of CDW phase induced without bare repulsive interactions, and enriches the phase diagram of the 1D Kondo lattice model.

Tunning topological phase and quantum anomalous Hall effect by interaction in quadratic band touching systems

Interaction driven topological phases can significantly enrich the class of topological materials and thus are of great importance. Here, we study the phase diagram of interacting spinless fermions filling the two-dimensional checkerboard lattice with a quadratic band touching (QBT) point. By developing new diagnosis based on the state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization, we determine accurate quantum phase diagram for such a system at half-filling with three distinct phases. For weak nearest-neighboring interactions, we demonstrate the instablity of the QBT towards an interaction-driven spontaneous quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect. For strong interactions, the system breaks the rotational symmetry realizing a nematic charge-density-wave (CDW) phase. Interestingly, for intermediate interactions we discover a symmetry-broken bond-ordered critical phase sandwiched in between the QAH and CDW phases, which splits the QBT into two Dirac points driven by interaction. Instead of the direct transition between QAH and CDW phases, our identification of an intermediate phase shed new light on the theoretical understanding of the interaction-driven phases in QBT systems.

Valley Stoner Instability of the Composite Fermi Sea

We study two-component electrons in the lowest Landau level at total filling factor $ν_T=1/2$ with anisotropic mass tensors and principal axes rotated by $π/2$ as realized in Aluminum Arsenide (AlAs) quantum wells. Combining exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group we demonstrate that the system undergoes a quantum phase transition from a gapless state in which both flavors are equally populated to another gapless state in which all the electrons spontaneously polarize into a single flavor beyond a critical mass anisotropy of {\bf $m_x/m_y \sim 7$}. We propose that this phase transition is a form of itinerant Stoner transition between a two-component and a single-component composite fermi sea states and describe a set of trial wavefunctions which successfully capture the quantum numbers and shell filling effects in finite size systems as well as providing a physical picture for the energetics of these states. Our estimates indicate that the composite Fermi sea of AlAs is the analog of an itinerant Stoner magnet with a finite spontaneous valley polarization. We pinpoint experimental evidence indicating the presence of Stoner magnetism in the Jain states surrounding $ν=1/2$.

Disorder-driven transition and intermediate phase for $ν=5/2$ fractional quantum Hall effect

The fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect at the filling number $ν=5/2$ is a primary candidate for non-Abelian topological order, while the fate of such a state in the presence of random disorder has not been resolved. Here, we address this open question by implementing unbiased diagnosis based on numerical exact diagonalization. We calculate the disorder averaged Hall conductance and the associated statistical distribution of the topological invariant Chern number, which unambiguously characterize the disorder-driven collapse of the FQH state. As the disorder strength increases towards a critical value, a continuous phase transition is detected based on the disorder configuration averaged wave function fidelity and the entanglement entropy. In the strong disorder regime, we identify a composite Fermi liquid (CFL) phase with fluctuating Chern numbers, in striking contrast to the well-known $ν=1/3$ case where an Anderson insulator appears. Interestingly, the lowest Landau level projected local density profile, the wavefunction overlap, and the entanglement entropy as a function of disorder strength simultaneously signal an intermediate phase, which may be relevant to the recent proposal of Pfaffian-anti-Pfaffian puddle state.

Exciton Condensation in Quantum Hall Bilayers at Total Filling $ν_T=5$

We study the coupled quantum Hall bilayers each at half-filled first excited Landau levels with varying the layer distance. Based on numerical exact diagonalization on torus, we identify two distinct phases separated by a critical layer distance $d_c$. From $d_c$ to infinite layer distance, the topological phase is smoothly connected to a direct tensor product of two Moore-Read states, while the interlayer coherence emerges at $d<d_c$ characterized by the $xy$ easy-plane ferromagnetic energy spectra, gapless pseudospin excitations and the finite exciton superfluid stiffness, corresponding to the exciton superfluid state. More interestingly, the results of the ground state fidelity, the evolution of energy spectra, and the superfluid stiffness indicate a possible continuous transition. Theoretically it can be interpreted as a topological phase transition which simultaneously changes the topology of ground state and breaks symmetry, providing an interesting example of transitions beyond Landau paradigm.

Quantum Anomalous Hall Phase Stabilized via Realistic Interactions on a Kagome Lattice

We study the quantum phases of spinless fermion at one-third filling on a Kagome lattice featuring a quadratic band touching Fermi point. In the presence of weak first and second nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions ($V_1$ and $V_2$), we demonstrate an interaction driven quantum anomalous Hall effect by employing exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group methods. The time-reversal symmetry is broken spontaneously by forming loop currents that exhibit long-range correlation. Quantized Hall conductance corresponding to Chern number of $\pm1$ is obtained by measuring the pumped charge through inserting flux in a cylinder geometry. We find that the energy gap, which topologically protects the emerging ground states, can be enhanced remarkably by a moderate $V_2 < V_1$ via calculating the spectrum and charge excitation gaps, which highlights the experimentally feasible scheme of realizing interaction driven topological phase by spatially decaying interactions on topologically trivial lattice models.

Hidden spin current in doped Mott antiferromagnets

We investigate the nature of doped Mott insulators using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. Persistent spin currents are revealed in the ground state, which are concomitant with a nonzero total momentum or angular momentum associated with the doped hole. The latter determines a nontrivial ground state degeneracy. By further making superpositions of the degenerate ground states with zero or unidirectional spin currents, we show that different patterns of spatial charge and spin modulations will emerge. Such anomaly persists for the odd numbers of holes, but the spin current, ground state degeneracy, and charge/spin modulations completely disappear for even numbers of holes, with the two-hole ground state exhibiting a d-wave symmetry. An understanding of the spin current due to a many-body Berry-like phase and its impact on the momentum distribution of the doped holes will be discussed.

Robust non-Abelian spin liquid and possible intermediate phase in antiferromagnetic Kitaev model with magnetic field

We investigate the non-Abelian topological chiral spin liquid phase in the two-dimensional (2D) Kitaev honeycomb model subject to a magnetic field. By combining density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and exact diagonalization (ED) we study the energy spectra, entanglement, topological degeneracy, and expectation values of Wilson loop operators, allowing for robust characterization. While the ferromagnetic (FM) Kitaev spin liquid is already destroyed by a weak magnetic field with Zeeman energy $H_*^\text{FM} \approx 0.02$, the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin liquid remains robust up to a magnetic field that is an order of magnitude larger, $H_*^\text{AFM} \approx 0.2$. Interestingly, for larger fields $H_*^\text{AFM} < H < H_{**}^\text{AFM}$, an intermediate gapless phase is observed, before a second transition to the high-field partially-polarized paramagnet. We attribute this rich phase diagram, and the remarkable stability of the chiral topological phase in the AFM Kitaev model, to the interplay of strong spin-orbit coupling and frustration enhanced by the magnetic field. Our findings suggest relevance to recent experiments on RuCl$_3$ under magnetic fields.

$U(1)$-symmetric infinite projected entangled-pair state study of the spin-$1/2$ square $J_{1}-J_{2}$ Heisenberg model

We develop an improved variant of $U(1)$-symmetric infinite projected entangled-pair state (iPEPS) ansatz to investigate the ground state phase diagram of the spin-$1/2$ square $J_{1}-J_{2}$ Heisenberg model. In order to improve the accuracy of the ansatz, we discuss a simple strategy to select automatically relevant symmetric sectors and also introduce an optimization method to treat second-neighbor interactions more efficiently. We show that variational ground-state energies of the model obtained by the $U(1)$-symmetric iPEPS ansatz (for a fixed bond dimension $D$) set a better upper bound, improving previous tensor-network-based results. By studying the finite-$D$ scaling of the magnetically order parameter, we find a Néel phase for $J_2/J_1<0.53$. For $0.53<J_2/J_1<0.61$, a non-magnetic columnar valence bond solid (VBS) state is established as observed by the pattern of local bond energy. The divergent behavior of correlation length $ξ\sim D^{1.2}$ and vanishing order parameters are consistent with a deconfined Néel-to-VBS transition at $J^{c_1}_{2}/J_1=0.530(5)$, where estimated critical anomalous exponents are $η_{s} \sim 0.6$ and $η_{d} \sim 1.9$ for spin and dimer correlations respectively. We show that the associated VBS order parameter monotonically increases with $J_2/J_1$ and finally a first-order quantum phase transition takes place at $J^{c_2}_{2}/J_1=0.610(2)$ to the conventional Stripe phase. We compare our results with earlier DMRG and PEPS studies and suggest future directions for resolving remaining issues.

Quantum phase diagram of spin-$1$ $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice: an infinite projected entangled-pair state and density matrix renormalization group study

We study the spin-$1$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice with the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and the next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ couplings by using the infinite projected entangled-pair state (iPEPS) ansatz and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation. The iPEPS simulation, which studies the model directly in the thermodynamic limit, finds a crossing of the ground state from the Néel magnetic state to the stripe magnetic state at $J_2/J_1 \simeq 0.549$, showing a direct phase transition. In the finite-size DMRG calculation on the cylinder geometry up to the cylinder width $L_y = 10$, we find a very small intermediate regime $\sim 0.005 J_1$ between the two magnetic order phases, which may imply the absent intermediate phase. Both calculations identify that the stripe order comes with a first-order transition at $J_2/J_1 \simeq 0.549$. Our results indicate that unlike the spin-$1/2$ $J_1-J_2$ square model, quantum fluctuations in the spin-$1$ model may be not strong enough to stabilize an intermediate non-magnetic phase.

Spinon Fractionalization from Dynamic Structure Factor of Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet on the Kagome Lattice

We study dynamical spin structure factor (DSSF) of S = 1/2 Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice (KAFM) by means of density-matrix renormalization group. By comparison with the well-defined magnetic ordered state and chiral spin liquid sitting nearby in the phase diagram, the KAFM with the nearest-neighbor interaction shows distinct dynamical response behaviors. First of all, the DSSF displays important spectral intensity predominantly at low frequency region around Q = M point in momentum space, and shows a broad spectral distribution at high frequency region for momenta along the boundary of the extended Brillouin zone. Secondly, spinon excitation spectrum is identified from momentum and energy resolved DSSF, which shows critical behavior with much reduced spectrum intensity comparing to the neighboring chiral spin liquid. By adding a weak Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction, the DSSF demonstrates a strong sensitivity to the boundary condition smore consistent with a gapless spin liquid. These results capture the main observations in the inelastic neutron scattering measurements of herbertsmithite, and indicate the spin liquid nature of the ground state with fractionalized spinon excitations. By following the DSSF crossing the quantum phase transition between the CSL and the magnetical ordered phase, we identify the spinon condensation driving the quantum phase transition.

Pairing versus phase coherence of doped holes in distinct quantum spin backgrounds

We examine the pairing structure of holes injected into two \emph{distinct} spin backgrounds: a short-range antiferromagnetic phase versus a symmetry protected topological phase. Based on density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulation, we find that although there is a strong binding between two holes in both phases, \emph{phase fluctuations} can significantly influence the pair-pair correlation depending on the spin-spin correlation in the background. Here the phase fluctuation is identified as an intrinsic string operator nonlocally controlled by the spins. We show that while the pairing amplitude is generally large, the coherent Cooper pairing can be substantially weakened by the phase fluctuation in the symmetry-protected topological phase, in contrast to the short-range antiferromagnetic phase. It provides an example of a non-BCS mechanism for pairing, in which the paring phase coherence is determined by the underlying spin state self-consistently, bearing an interesting resemblance to the pseudogap physics in the cuprate.

Magnetothermoelectric transport properties in phosphorene

We numerically study the electrical and thermoelectric transport properties in phosphorene in the presence of both a magnetic field and disorder. The quantized Hall conductivity is similar to that of a conventional two-dimensional electron gas, but the positions of all the Hall plateaus shift to the left due to the spectral asymmetry, in agreement with the experimental observations. The thermoelectric conductivity and Nernst signal exhibit remarkable anisotropy, and the thermopower is nearly isotropic. When a bias voltage is applied between top and bottom layers of phosphorene, both thermopower and Nernst signal are enhanced and their peak values become large.

SU(N) fractional quantum Hall effects in topological flat bands

We study $N$-component interacting particles (hardcore bosons and fermions) loaded in topological lattice models with SU$(N)$-invariant interactions based on density matrix renormalization group method. By tuning the interplay of interspecies and intraspecies interactions, we demonstrate that a class of SU$(N)$ fractional quantum Hall states can emerge at fractional filling factors $ν=N/(N+1)$ for bosons ($ν=N/(2N+1)$ for fermions) in the lowest Chern band, characterized by the nontrivial fractional Hall responses and the fractional charge pumping. Moreover, we establish a topological characterization based on the $\mathbf{K}$ matrix, and discuss the close relationship to the fractional quantum Hall physics in topological flat bands with Chern number $N$.

Nature of continuous phase transitions in interacting topological insulators

We revisit the effects of the Hubbard repulsion on quantum spin Hall effects (QSHE) in two-dimensional quantum lattice models. We present both unbiased exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group simulations with numerical evidences for a continuous quantum phase transition (CQPT) separating QSHE from the topologically trivial antiferromagnetic phase. Our numerical results suggest that, the nature of CQPT exhibits distinct finite-size scaling behaviors, which may be consistent with either Ising or XY universality classes for different time-reversal symmetric QSHE systems.

Anisotropy Driven Transition from Moore-Read State to Quantum Hall Stripes

We investigate the nature of the quantum Hall liquid in a half-filled second Landau level ($n=1$) as a function of band mass anisotropy using numerical exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods. We find increasing the mass anisotropy induces a quantum phase transition from the Moore-Read state to a charge density wave state. By analyzing the energy spectrum, guiding center structure factors and by adding weak pinning potentials, we show that this charge density wave is a uni-directional quantum Hall stripe, which has a periodicity of a few magnetic lengths and survives in the thermodynamic limit. We find smooth profiles for the guiding center occupation function that reveal the strong coupling nature of the array of chiral Luttinger liquids residing at the stripe edges.
