Numerical Study of Quantum Hall Bilayers at Total Filling $ν_T=1$: A New Phase at Intermediate Layer Distances

We study the phase diagram of quantum Hall bilayer systems with total filing $ν_T=1/2+1/2$ of the lowest Landau level as a function of layer distances $d$. Based on numerical exact diagonalization calculations, we obtain three distinct phases, including an exciton superfluid phase with spontaneous interlayer coherence at small $d$, a composite Fermi liquid at large $d$, and an intermediate phase for $1.1<d/l_B<1.8$ ($l_B$ is the magnetic length). The transition from the exciton superfluid to the intermediate phase is identified by (i) a dramatic change in the Berry curvature of the ground state under twisted boundary conditions on the two layers; (ii) an energy level crossing of the first excited state. The transition from the intermediate phase to the composite Fermi liquid is identified by the vanishing of the exciton superfluid stiffness. Furthermore, from our finite-size study, the energy cost of transferring one electron between the layers shows an even-odd effect and possibly extrapolates to a finite value in the thermodynamic limit, indicating the enhanced intralayer correlation. Our identification of an intermediate phase and its distinctive features shed new light on the theoretical understanding of the quantum Hall bilayer system at total filling $ν_T=1$.

Prethermal time crystals in a one-dimensional periodically driven Floquet system

Motivated by experimental observations of time-symmetry breaking behavior in a periodically driven (Floquet) system, we study a one-dimensional spin model to explore the stability of such Floquet discrete time crystals (DTCs) under the interplay between interaction and the microwave driving. For intermediate interactions and high drivings, from the time evolution of both stroboscopic spin polarization and mutual information between two ends, we show that Floquet DTCs can exist in a prethermal time regime without the tuning of strong disorder. For much weak interactions the system is a symmetry-unbroken phase, while for strong interactions it gives its way to a thermal phase. Through analyzing the entanglement dynamics, we show that large driving fields protect the prethermal DTCs from many-body localization and thermalization. Our results suggest that by increasing the spin interaction, one can drive the experimental system into optimal regime for observing a robust prethermal DTC phase.

Possible Nematic Spin Liquid in Spin-$1$ Antiferromagnetic System on the Square Lattice: Implication for the Nematic Paramagnetic State of FeSe

The exotic normal state of iron chalcogenide superconductor FeSe, which exhibits vanishing magnetic order and possesses an electronic nematic order, triggered extensive explorations of its magnetic ground state. To understand its novel properties, we study the ground state of a highly frustrated spin-$1$ system with bilinear-biquadratic interactions using unbiased large-scale density matrix renormalization group. Remarkably, with increasing biquadratic interactions, we find a paramagnetic phase between Néel and stripe magnetic ordered phases. We identify this phase as a candidate of nematic quantum spin liquid by the compelling evidences, including vanished spin and quadrupolar orders, absence of lattice translational symmetry breaking, and a persistent non-zero lattice nematic order in the thermodynamic limit. The established quantum phase diagram natually explains the observations of enhanced spin fluctuations of FeSe in neutron scattering measurement and the phase transition with increasing pressure. This identified paramagnetic phase provides a new possibility to understand the novel properties of FeSe.

Global phase diagram and quantum spin liquids in spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet

We study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with the nearest-neighbor $J_1 > 0$, the next-nearest-neighobr $J_2 > 0$ Heisenberg interactions, and the additional scalar chiral interaction $J_χ(\vec{S}_i \times \vec{S}_j) \cdot \vec{S}_k$ for the three spins in all the triangles using large-scale density matrix renormalization group calculation on cylinder geometry. With increasing $J_2$ ($J_2/J_1 \leq 0.3$) and $J_χ$ ($J_χ/J_1 \leq 1.0$) interactions, we establish a quantum phase diagram with the magnetically ordered $120^{\circ}$ phase, stripe phase, and non-coplanar tetrahedral phase. In between these magnetic order phases, we find a chiral spin liquid (CSL) phase, which is identified as a $ν= 1/2$ bosonic fractional quantum Hall state with possible spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking. By switching on the chiral interaction, we find that the previously identified spin liquid in the $J_1 - J_2$ triangular model ($0.08 \lesssim J_2/J_1 \lesssim 0.15$) shows a phase transition to the CSL phase at very small $J_χ$. We also compute spin triplet gap in both spin liquid phases, and our finite-size results suggest large gap in the odd topological sector but small or vanishing gap in the even sector. We discuss the implications of our results to the nature of the spin liquid phases.

Magnetic field-dependent dynamics and field-driven metal-to-insulator transition of the half-filled Hubbard model: A DMFT+DMRG study

We study the magnetic field driven metal-to-insulator transition in half-filled Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice, using the dynamical mean-field theory by solving the quantum impurity problem with density-matrix renormalization group algorithm. The method enables us to obtain a high-resolution spectral densities in the presence of a magnetic field. It is found that the Kondo resonance at the Fermi level splits at relatively high magnetic field: the spin-up and spin-down components move away from the Fermi level and finally form a spin polarized band insulator. By calculating the magnetization and spin susceptibility, we clarify that an applied magnetic field drives a transition from a paramagnetic metallic phase to a band insulting phase. In the weak interaction regime, the nature of the transition is continuous and captured by the Stoner's description, while in the strong interaction regime the transition is very likely to be metamagnetic, evidenced by the hysteresis curve. Furthermore, we determine the phase boundary by tracking the kink in the magnetic susceptibility, and the step-like change of the entanglement entropy and the entanglement gap closing. Interestingly, the phase boundary determined from these two different ways are largely consistent with each other.

Two universality classes for the many-body localization transition

We provide a systematic comparison of the many-body localization transition in spin chains with nonrandom quasiperiodic vs. random fields. We find evidence that these belong to two separate universality classes: one dominated by "intrinsic" intra-sample randomness, and the second dominated by external inter-sample quenched randomness. We show that the effects of inter-sample variations are strongly growing, but not yet dominant, at the system sizes probed by exact-diagonalization studies on random models. Thus, the observed finite-size critical scaling collapses in such studies appear to be in a preasymptotic regime near the nonrandom universality class, but showing signs of the initial crossover towards the quenched-disorder dominated universality class. We also show that the MBL phase is more stable for the quasiperiodic model as compared to the random one, and the transition in the quasiperiodic model suffers less from certain finite-size effects. Altogether, our results motivate the need for a greater focus on quasiperiodic models in theoretical studies of the MBL transition.

Two-component quantum Hall effects in topological flat bands

We study quantum Hall states for two-component particles (hardcore bosons and fermions) loading in topological lattice models. By tuning the interplay of interspecies and intraspecies interactions, we demonstrate that two-component fractional quantum Hall states emerge at certain fractional filling factors $ν=1/2$ for fermions ($ν=2/3$ for bosons) in the lowest Chern band, classified by features from ground states including the unique Chern number matrix (inverse of $\mathbf{K}$-matrix), the fractional charge and spin pumpings, and two parallel propagating edge modes. Moreover, we also apply our strategy to two-component fermions at integer filling factor $ν=2$, where a possible topological Neel antiferromagnetic phase is under intense debate very recently. For the typical $π$-flux checkerboard lattice, by tuning the onsite Hubbard repulsion, we establish a first-order phase transition directly from a two-component fermionic $ν=2$ quantum Hall state at weak interaction to a topologically trivial antiferromagnetic insulator at strong interaction, and therefore exclude the possibility of an intermediate topological phase for our system.

Many-Body Localization in Spin Chain Systems with Quasiperiodic Fields

We study the many-body localization of spin chain systems with quasiperiodic fields. We identify the lower bound for the critical disorder necessary to drive the transition between the thermal and many-body localized phase to be $W_{cl}\sim 1.85$, based on finite-size scaling of entanglement entropy and fluctuations of the bipartite magnetization. We also examine the time evolution of the entanglement entropy of an initial product state where we find power-law and logarithmic growth for the thermal and many-body localized phases, respectively. For larger disorder strength, both imbalance and spin glass order are preserved at long times, while spin glass order shows dependence on system size. Quasiperiodic fields have been applied in different experimental systems and our study finds that such fields are very efficient at driving the MBL phase transition.

Critical Properties of the Many-Body Localization Transition

The transition from a many-body localized phase to a thermalizing one is a dynamical quantum phase transition which lies outside the framework of equilibrium statistical mechanics. We provide a detailed study of the critical properties of this transition at finite sizes in one dimension. We find that the entanglement entropy of small subsystems looks strongly subthermal in the quantum critical regime, which indicates that it varies discontinuously across the transition as the system-size is taken to infinity, even though many other aspects of the transition look continuous. We also study the variance of the half-chain entanglement entropy which shows a peak near the transition, and find substantial variation in the entropy across eigenstates of the same sample. Further, the sample-to-sample variations in this quantity are strongly growing, and larger than the intra-sample variations. We posit that these results are consistent with a picture in which the transition to the thermal phase is driven by an eigenstate-dependent sparse resonant "backbone" of long-range entanglement, which just barely gains enough strength to thermalize the system on the thermal side of the transition as the system size is taken to infinity. This discontinuity in a global quantity --- the presence of a fully functional bath --- in turn implies a discontinuity even for local properties. We discuss how this picture compares with existing renormalization group treatments of the transition.

Fractional charge pumping of interacting bosons in one-dimensional superlattice

Motivated by experimental realizations of integer quantized charge pumping in one-dimensional superlattices~[Nat. Phys. 12, 350 (2016); Nat. Phys. 12, 296 (2016)], we generalize and propose the adiabatic pumping of a fractionalized charge in interacting bosonic systems. This is achieved by dynamically sweeping the modulated potential in a class of one-dimensional interacting systems. As concrete examples, we show the charge pumping of interacting bosons at certain fractionally occupied fillings. We find that, for a given ground state, the charge pumping in a complete potential cycle is quantized to the fractional value related to the corresponding Chern number, characterized by the motion of the charge polarization per site. Moreover, the difference between charge polarizations of two ground states is quantized to an intrinsic constant revealing the fractional elementary charge of quasiparticle.

Analytical theory and possible detection of the $ac$ quantum spin Hall effect

We develop an analytical theory of the low-frequency $ac$ quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect based upon the scattering matrix formalism. It is shown that the $ac$ QSH effect can be interpreted as a bulk quantum pumping effect. When the electron spin is conserved, the integer-quantized $ac$ spin Hall conductivity can be linked to the winding numbers of the reflection matrices in the electrodes, which also equal to the bulk spin Chern numbers of the QSH material. Furthermore, a possible experimental scheme by using ferromagnetic metals as electrodes is proposed to detect the topological $ac$ spin current by electrical means.

Fractional Quantum Hall Bilayers at Half-Filling: Tunneling-driven Non-Abelian Phase

Multicomponent quantum Hall systems with internal degrees of freedom provide a fertile ground for the emergence of exotic quantum liquids. Here we investigate the possibility of non-Abelian topological order in the half-filled fractional quantum Hall (FQH) bilayer system driven by the tunneling effect between two layers. By means of the state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group, we unveil "finger print" evidence of the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state emerging in the intermediate-tunneling regime, including the ground-state degeneracy on the torus geometry and the topological entanglement spectroscopy (entanglement spectrum and topological entanglement entropy) on the spherical geometry, respectively. Remarkably, the phase transition from the previously identified Abelian $(331)$ Halperin state to the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state is determined to be continuous, which is signaled by the continuous evolution of the universal part of the entanglement spectrum, and discontinuities in the excitation gap and the derivative of the ground-state energy. Our results not only provide a "proof-of-principle" demonstration of realizing a non-Abelian state through coupling different degrees of freedom, but also open up a possibility in FQH bilayer systems for detecting different chiral $p-$wave pairing states.

Variational Monte Carlo study of chiral spin liquid in quantum antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice

By using Gutzwiller projected fermionic wave functions and variational Monte Carlo technique, we study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model with the first-neighbor ($J_1$), second-neighbor ($J_2$), and additional scalar chiral interaction $J_χ{\bf S}_i \cdot ({\bf S}_j \times {\bf S}_k)$ on the triangular lattice. In the non-magnetic phase of the $J_1-J_2$ triangular model with $0.08 \lesssim J_2/J_1 \lesssim 0.16$, recent density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies [Zhu and White, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 92}, 041105 (2015); Hu, Gong, Zhu, and Sheng, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 92}, 140403 (2015)] find a possible gapped spin liquid with the signal of a competition between a chiral and a $Z_2$ spin liquid. Motivated by the DMRG results, we consider the chiral interaction $J_χ{\bf S}_i \cdot ({\bf S}_j \times {\bf S}_k)$ as a pertubation for this non-magnetic phase. We find that with growing $J_χ$, the gapless U(1) Dirac spin liquid, which has the best variational energy for $J_χ=0$, exhibits the energy instability towards a gapped spin liquid with non-trivial magnetic fluxes and nonzero chiral order. We calculate topological Chern number and ground-state degeneracy, both of which identify this flux state as the chiral spin liquid with fractionalized Chern number $C=1/2$ and two-fold topological degeneracy. Our results indicate a positive direction to stabilize a chiral spin liquid near the non-magnetic phase of the $J_1-J_2$ triangular model.

Emergent quasi-one-dimensionality in a kagomé magnet: A simple route to complexity

We study the ground state phase diagram of the quantum spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the kagomé lattice with first- ($J_1 < 0$), second- ($J_2 < 0$), and third-neighbor interactions ($J_d > 0$) by means of analytical low-energy field theory and numerical density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies. The results offer a consistent picture of the $J_d$-dominant regime in terms of three sets of spin chains weakly coupled by the ferromagnetic inter-chain interactions $J_{1,2}$. When either $J_1$ or $J_2$ is dominant, the model is found to support one of two cuboctohedral phases, cuboc1 and cuboc2. These cuboc states host non-coplanar long-ranged magnetic order and possess finite scalar spin chirality. However, in the compensated regime $J_1 \simeq J_2$, a valence bond crystal phase emerges between the two cuboc phases. We find excellent agreement between an analytical theory based on coupled spin chains and unbiased DMRG calculations, including at a very detailed level of comparison of the structure of the valence bond crystal state. To our knowledge, this is the first such comprehensive understanding of a highly frustrated two-dimensional (2d) quantum antiferromagnet. We find no evidence of either the one-dimensional (1d) gapless spin liquid or the chiral spin liquids, which were previously suggested by parton mean field theories.

Robust AC Quantum Spin Hall Effect without Participation of Edge States

The quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect in the DC regime, which has been intensively researched, relies on the existence of symmetry-protected edge states. Here, we demonstrate that a QSH system behaves quite differently in response to an applied AC electric field, and put forward the idea of AC QSH effect. The AC QSH effect can occur in the bulk without involving the fragile edge states, hence being robust against time-reversal symmetry breaking and disorder. It lays a more solid foundation for practical applications of the two-dimensional topological insulators, in the emerging field of AC spintronics.

Kinetic Magnetism at the Interface Between Mott and Band Insulators

We show that the interplay of a high density two-dimensional electron gas and localized electrons in a neighboring Mott insulator leads to kinetic magnetism unique to the Mott/band insulator interface. Our study is based upon a bilayer Hubbard model at $U=\infty$ with a potential difference between the two layers. We combine analytic results with DMRG simulations to show that magnetism, and especially ferromagnetism, is greatly enhanced relative by the proximity of the two subsystems. The results are potentially relevant to recent experiments suggesting magnetism in $R$TiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures.

Interaction-Driven Spontaneous Quantum Hall Effect on Kagome Lattice

Non-interacting topological states of matter can be realized in band insulators with intrinsic spin-orbital couplings as a result of the nontrivial band topology. In recent years, the possibility of realizing novel interaction-driven topological phase has attracted a lot of research activities, which may significantly extend the classes of topological states of matter. Here, we report a new finding of an interaction-driven spontaneous quantum Hall effect (QHE) (Chern insulator) emerging in an extended fermion-Hubbard model on kagome lattice. By means of the state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group, we expose universal properties of the QHE including time-reversal symmetry spontaneous breaking and quantized Hall conductance. By accessing the ground state in large systems, we demonstrate the robustness of the QHE against finite-size effects. Moreover, we map out a phase diagram and identify two competing charge density wave phases by varying interactions, where transitions to the QHE phase are determined to be of the first order. Our study provides a "proof-of-the-principle" demonstration of interaction-driven QHE without requirement of external magnetic field or magnetic doping.

Bosonic integer quantum Hall states in topological bands with Chern number two

We study the interacting bosons in topological Hofstadter bands with Chern number two. Using exact diagonalization, we demonstrate that bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) state emerges at integer boson filling factor $ν=1$ of the lowest Chern band with evidences including a robust spectrum gap and quantized topological Hall conductance two. Moreover, the robustness of BIQH state against different interactions and next-nearest neighbor hopping is investigated. The strong nearest neighbor interaction would favor a charge density wave. When the onsite interaction decreases, BIQH state undergoes a continuous transition into a superfluid state. Without next-nearest neighbor hopping, the ground state is possibly in a metallic Fermi-liquid-like phase.
