Thermodynamic properties of the coupled dimer system Cu$_2$(C$_5$H$_{12}$N$_2$)$_2$Cl$_4$

We re-examine the thermodynamic properties of the coupled dimer system Cu$_2$(C$_5$H$_{12}$N$_2$)$_2$Cl$_4$ under magnetic field in the light of recent NMR experiments [Clémancey {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 97}, 167204 (2006)] suggesting the existence of a finite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We show that including such a spin anisotropy greatly improves the fit of the magnetization curve and gives the correct trend of the insofar unexplained anomalous behavior of the specific heat in magnetic field at low temperature.

Plaquette valence bond solid in the frustrated Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet on the square lattice

Using both exact diagonalizations and diagonalizations in a subset of short-range valence bond singlets, we address the nature of the groundstate of the Heisenberg spin-1/2 antiferromagnet on the square lattice with competing next-nearest and next-next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings (J1-J2-J3 model). A detailed comparison of the two approaches reveals a region along the line (J2+J3)/J1=1/2, where the description in terms of nearest-neighbor singlet coverings is excellent, therefore providing evidence for a magnetically disordered region. Furthermore a careful analysis of dimer-dimer correlation functions, dimer structure factors and plaquette-plaquette correlation functions provides striking evidence for the presence of a plaquette valence bond solid order in part of the magnetically disordered region.

Zeeman effect in superconducting two-leg ladders: irrational magnetization plateaus and exceeding the Pauli limit

The effect of a parallel magnetic field on superconducting two-leg ladders is investigated numerically. The magnetization curve displays an irrational plateau at a magnetization equal to the hole density. Remarkably, its stability is fundamentally connected to the existence of a well-known magnetic resonant mode. Once the zero-field spin gap is suppressed by the field, pairs acquire a finite momentum characteristic of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase. In addition, S^z=0 triplet superconducting correlations coexist with singlet ones above the irrational plateau. This provides a simple mechanism in which the Pauli limit is exceeded as suggested by recent experiments.

Exotic phenomena in doped quantum magnets

We investigate the properties of the two-dimensional frustrated quantum antiferromagnet on the square lattice, especially at infinitesimal doping. We find that next nearest neighbor (N.N.) J2 and next-next N.N. J3 interactions together destroy the antiferromagnetic long range order and stabilize a quantum disordered valence bond crystalline plaquette phase. A static vacancy or a dynamic hole doped into this phase liberates a spinon. From the profile of the spinon wavefunction around the (static) vacancy we identify an intermediate behavior between complete deconfinement (behavior seen in the kagome lattice) and strong confinement (behavior seen in the checkerboard lattice) with the emergence of two length scales, a spinon confinement length larger than the magnetic correlation length. When a finite hole hopping is introduced, this behavior translates into an extended (mobile) spinon-holon boundstate with a very small quasiparticle weight. These features provide clear evidence for a nearby "deconfined critical point" in a doped microscopic model. Finally, we give arguments in favor of superconducting properties of the doped plaquette phase.

Checkerboard order in the t--J model on the square lattice

We propose that the inhomogeneous patterns seen by STM in some underdoped superconducting cuprates could be related to a bond-order-wave instability of the staggered flux state, one of the most studied "normal" state proposed to compete with the d-wave RVB superconductor. A checkerboard pattern is obtained by a Gutzwiller renormalized mean-field theory of the t-J model for doping around 1/8. It is found that the charge modulation is always an order of magnitude smaller than the bond-order modulations. This is confirmed by an exact optimization of the wavefunction by a variational Monte Carlo scheme. The numerical estimates of the order parameters are however found to be strongly reduced w.r.t their mean-field values.

Magnetization plateaux induced by a coupling to the lattice

We investigate a simple model of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to adiabatic phonons under an external magnetic field. Using field theoretic methods complemented by extensive Density Matrix Renormalisation Group techniques generalized to include self-consistent lattice distortions, we show that magnetization plateaux at non-trivial rational values of the magnetization can be stabilized by the lattice coupling. We suggest that such a scenario could be relevant for some low dimensional frustrated spin-Peierls compounds.

Doped two-leg ladder with ring exchange

The effect of a ring exchange on doped two-leg ladders is investigated combining exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) computations. We focus on the nature and weights of the low energy magnetic excitations and on superconducting pairing. The stability with respect to this cyclic term of a remarkable resonant mode originating from a hole pair-magnon bound state is examined. We also find that, near the zero-doping critical point separating rung-singlet and dimerized phases, doping reopens a spin gap.

Spin-Charge Separation in Two-dimensional Frustrated Quantum Magnets

The dynamics of a mobile hole in two-dimensional frustrated quantum magnets is investigated by exact diagonalization techniques. Our results provide evidence for spin-charge separation upon doping the kagome lattice, a prototype of a spin liquid. In contrast, in the checkerboard lattice, a symmetry broken Valence Bond Crystal, a small quasi-particle peak is seen for some crystal momenta, a finding interpreted as a restoration of weak holon-spinon confinement.

Resonant magnetic mode in superconducting 2-leg ladders

The spin dynamics of a doped 2-leg spin ladder is investigated by numerical techniques. We show that a hole pair-magnon boundstate evolves at finite hole doping into a sharp magnetic excitation below the two-particle continuum. This is supported by a field theory argument based on a SO(6)-symmetric ladder. Similarities and differences with the resonant mode of the high-T$_c$ cuprates are discussed.

Theoretical Study of Half-Doped Models for Manganites: Fragility of the CE Phase with Disorder, Two Types of Colossal Magnetoresistances, and Charge-Ordered States for Electron-Doped Materials

A comprehensive analysis of half-doped manganites is presented using Monte Carlo simulations applied to the double-exchange model with cooperative Jahn-Teller lattice distortions in two dimensions. A variety of novel results are reported: (i) The phase diagram is established in the lambda-J_ AF plane, with lambda the electron-phonon coupling and J_AF the antiferromagnetic exchange between classical t_2g spins. The results include standard phases, such as the CE-insulating and FM-metallic regimes, but they also unveil novel states, such as a ferromagnetic charge-ordered (CO) orbital-ordered phase compatible with recent experimental results by Loudon et al. (ii) For realistic couplings, it was observed that the charge disproportionation delta of the CO phase is far from the widely accepted extreme limit delta=0.5 of a 3+/4+ charge separation. A far smaller delta appears more realistic, in agreement with recent experiments by Garcia et al. and Daoud-Aladine it et al. (iii) Colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effects are found in calculations of cluster resistances using the Landauer formalism. This occurs near the ubiquitous first-order phase transitions between the insulating and metallic states. (iv) The CE-state is found to be (very sensitive to disorder) since its long-range order rapidly disappears when quenched-disorder is introduced, contrary to the FM state which is more robust. This is also in qualitative agreement with recent experiments by Akahoshi et al. and Nakajima et al. (v) The phase diagram in the half-doped (electron doping) regime is briefly discussed as well. A charge-ordered state is found which is the analog of the x=0.5 CE phase. It contains a 3+/2+ charge arrangement at large lambda.

Charge and spin inhomogeneous phases in the Ferromagnetic Kondo Lattice Model

We study numerically the one-dimensional ferromagnetic Kondo lattice. This model is widely used to describe nickel and manganese perovskites. Due to the competition between double and super-exchange, we find a region where the formation of magnetic polarons induces a charge-ordered state. This ordering is present even in the absence of any inter-site Coulomb repulsion. There is an insulating gap associated to the charge structure formation. We also study the insulator-metal transition induced by a magnetic field which removes simultaneously both charge and spin ordering.

Recent progress in the truncated Lanczos method : application to hole-doped spin ladders

The truncated Lanczos method using a variational scheme based on Hilbert space reduction as well as a local basis change is re-examined. The energy is extrapolated as a power law function of the Hamiltonian variance. This systematic extrapolation procedure is tested quantitatively on the two-leg t-J ladder with two holes. For this purpose, we have carried out calculations of the spin gap and of the pair dispersion up to size 2x15.

Evolution of the Spin Gap Upon Doping a 2-Leg Ladder

The evolution of the spin gap of a 2-leg ladder upon doping depends upon the nature of the lowest triplet excitations in a ladder with two holes. Here we study this evolution using various numerical techniques for a t-t'-J ladder as the next-near-neighbor hopping t' is varied. We find that depending on the value of t', the spin gap can evolve continuously or discontinuously and the lowest triplet state can correspond to a magnon, a bound magnon-hole-pair, or two separate quasi-particles. Previous experimental results on the superconducting two-leg ladder Sr12Ca2Cu24O41 are discussed.

Low-energy excitations of spin-Peierls chains with modified bond-impurities

The introduction of modified bond-defects in spin-Peierls systems is investigated in a model of antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains coupled to adiabatic phonons. Generically, new low-energy magnetic or non-magnetic excitations appear below the bulk spin gap energy. When two adjacent bonds are modified, these excitations can be interpreted in terms of boundstates of a soliton with the localized spin-1/2 located on the impurity site. It is shown that the confining potential occurs even in the case of {\it isolated} chains.

Study of impurities in spin-Peierls systems including lattice relaxation

The effects of magnetic and non-magnetic impurities in spin-Peierls systems are investigated allowing for lattice relaxation and quantum fluctuations. We show that, in isolated chains, strong bonds form next to impurities, leading to the appearance of magneto-elastic solitons. Generically, these solitonic excitations do not bind to impurities. However, interchain elastic coupling produces an attractive potential at the impurity site which can lead to the formation of bound states. In addition, we predict that small enough chain segments do not carry magnetic moments at the ends.

Investigation of soliton bound states in the Raman spectrum of pure and doped spin-Peierls chains

We investigate the occurrence of singlet bound states in the Raman spectrum of dimerized spin 1/2 chains by Exact Diagonalization and Density Matrix Renormalization Group techniques. We predict that several bulk $δ$-peaks could be observed in pure systems. Furthermore, we show that new low energy lines arise from non-magnetic impurity doping. These features are interpreted in terms of soliton-antisoliton and soliton-impurity bound states respectively. Energies and spectral weights associated with these bound states are sensitive to lattice relaxation effects. Our results are discussed in the context of the inorganic spin-Peierls compound CuGeO$_3$ and quantitatively compared to recent Raman experiments.

Antiferromagnetism in doped anisotropic two-dimensional spin-Peierls systems

We study the formation of antiferromagnetic correlations induced by impurity doping in anisotropic two-dimensional spin-Peierls systems. Using a mean-field approximation to deal with the inter-chain magnetic coupling, the intra-chain correlations are treated exactly by numerical techniques. The magnetic coupling between impurities is computed for both adiabatic and dynamical lattices and is shown to have an alternating sign as a function of the impurity-impurity distance, hence suppressing magnetic frustration. An effective model based on our numerical results supports the coexistence of antiferromagnetism and dimerization in this system.

Coexistence of charge density wave and spin-Peierls orders in quarter-filled quasi-one dimensional correlated electron systems

Charge and spin-Peierls instabilities in quarter-filled (n=1/2) compounds consisting of coupled ladders and/or zig-zag chains are investigated. Hubbard and t-J models including local Holstein and/or Peierls couplings to the lattice are studied by numerical techniques. Next nearest neighbor hopping and magnetic exchange, and short-range Coulomb interactions are also considered. We show that, generically, these systems undergo instabilities towards the formation of Charge Density Waves, Bond Order Waves and (generalized) spin-Peierls modulated structures. Moderate electron-electron and electron-lattice couplings can lead to a coexistence of these three types of orders. In the ladder, a zig-zag pattern is stabilized by the Holstein coupling and the nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion. In the case of an isolated chain, bond-centered and site-centered 2k_F and 4k_F modulations are induced by the local Holstein coupling. In addition, we show that, in contrast to the ladders, a small charge ordering in the chains, strongly enhances the spin-Peierls instability. Our results are applied to the NaV_2O_5 compound (trellis lattice) and various phases with coexisting charge disproportionation and spin-Peierls order are proposed and discussed in the context of recent experiments. The role of the long-range Coulomb potential is also outlined.
