Interaction between impurities and solitons in quasi one-dimensional spin-Peierls systems

The role of the spin-phonon coupling in spin-Peierls chains doped with spin-0 or spin-1 impurities is investigated by various numerical methods such as exact diagonalization, quantum Monte Carlo simulations and Density Matrix Renormalization Group. Various treatments of the lattice, in a fully quantum mechanical way, classically in the adiabatic approximation or using a fixed three-dimensional dimerization pattern are compared. For an isolated chain, strong bonds form between the two spin-1/2 sites next to the impurity site, leading to the appearance of magneto-elastic solitons. We also show that these excitations do not bind to spin-0 impurities but are weakly attracted by spin-1 impurities. However, the interchain elastic coupling generates an effective confining potential at the non-magnetic impurity site which can lead to the formation of soliton-impurity bound states. We also predict that a soliton and an antisoliton bound to two impurities on the same chain can annihilate each other when the separation between the impurities is smaller than a critical value depending on the interchain elastic constant.

Soliton Approach to Spin-Peierls Antiferromagnets: Large-Scale Numerical Results

A simple intuitive picture of spin-Peierls antiferromagnets arises from regarding the elementary excitations as S=1/2 solitons. In a strictly one-dimensional system these excitations are assumed not to form bound-states and to be repelled by impurities. Couplings to the three-dimensional lattice are assumed to produce an effective confining potential which binds solitons to antisolitons and to impurities, with the number of bound-states increasing as the interchain coupling goes to 0. We investigate these various assumptions numerically in a phononless model where spontaneous dimerization arises from frustration and the interchain coupling is treated in mean field theory.

Thermodynamic Properties of the Spin-1/2 Antiferromagnetic ladder Cu2(C2H12N2)2Cl4 under Magnetic Field

Specific heat ($C_V$) measurements in the spin-1/2 Cu$_2$(C$_2$H$_{12}$N$_2$)$_2$Cl$_4$ system under a magnetic field up to $H=8.25 T$ are reported and compared to the results of numerical calculations based on the 2-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladder. While the temperature dependences of both the susceptibility and the low field specific heat are accurately reproduced by this model, deviations are observed below the critical field $H_{C1}$ at which the spin gap closes. In this Quantum High Field phase, the contribution of the low-energy quantum fluctuations are stronger than in the Heisenberg ladder model. We argue that this enhancement can be attributed to dynamical lattice fluctuations. Finally, we show that such a Heisenberg ladder, for $H>H_{C1}$, is unstable, when coupled to the 3D lattice, against a lattice distortion. These results provide an alternative explanation for the observed low temperature ($T_C\sim 0.5K$ -- $0.8K$) phase (previously interpreted as a 3D magnetic ordering) as a new type of incommensurate gapped state.

Study of spin-Peierls transition in alpha'--NaV2O5 by infrared reflectivity

Polarized infrared reflectivity measurements have been performed on single crystals of the spin-Peierls compound alpha'-NaV2O5 in the temperature range 20-300 K. Pronounced spectral features associated with the formation of the dimerized phase were detected both in the a- and b-polarizations (perpendicular and parallel to the spin-1/2 chains, respectively). The temperature dependence of a salient spectral line at 718 cm^-1 sharply rising below the transition temperature T_SP obeys a (1-T/T_SP)^(2beta) law with T_SP \simeq 34.3$K and beta \simeq 0.25. In addition, a continuum signal is observed in the whole temperature range in the a-polarized optical conductivity spectra. In order to interpret these results, calculations of the static dimerization and of the optical conductivity based on a mean-field and a dynamical treatment of the lattice respectively are proposed.

Photoemission, inverse photoemission and superconducting correlations in Hubbard and t--J ladders: role of the anisotropy between legs and rungs

Several experiments in the context of ladder materials have recently shown that the study of simple models of anisotropic ladders (i.e. with different couplings along legs and rungs) is important for the understanding of these compounds. In this paper Exact Diagonalization studies of the one-band Hubbard and t-J models are reported for a variety of densities, couplings, and anisotropy ratios. The emphasis is given to the one-particle spectral function A(q,ω) which presents a flat quasiparticle dispersion at the chemical potential in some region of parameter space. This is correlated with the existence of strong pairing fluctuations, which themselves are correlated with an enhancement of the bulk-extrapolated value for the two-hole binding energy as well as with the strength of the spin-gap in the hole-doped system. Part of the results for the spectral function are explained using a simple analytical picture valid when the hopping along the legs is small. In particular, this picture predicts an insulating state at quarter filling in agreement with the metal-insulator transition observed at this special filling for increasing rung couplings. The results are compared against previous literature, and in addition pair-pair correlations using extended operators are also here reported.

Dynamical effects of phonons on soliton binding in spin-Peierls systems

The role of dynamical magneto-elastic coupling in spin-Peierls chains is investigated by numerical and analytical techniques. We show that a Heisenberg spin chain coupled to dynamical optical phonons exhibits a transition towards a spontaneously dimerized state in a wide range of parameter space. The low energy excitations are characterized as solitons. No binding between solitons occurs in the isolated spin-phonon chain and the dynamical spin structure factor shows a broad magnon dispersion. However, elastic interchain coupling can lead to the formation of bound states.

Numerical Calculations of the B1g Raman Spectrum of the Two-Dimensional Heisenberg Model

The B1g Raman spectrum of the two-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg model is discussed within Loudon-Fleury theory at both zero and finite temperature. The exact T=0 spectrum for lattices with up to 6*6 sites is computed using Lanczos exact diagonalization. A quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method is used to calculate the corresponding imaginary-time correlation function and its first two derivatives for lattices with up to 16*16 spins. The imaginary-time data is continued to real frequency using the maximum-entropy method, as well as a fit based on spinwave theory. The numerical results are compared with spinwave calculations for finite lattices. There is a surprisingly large change in the exact spectrum going from 4*4 to 6*6 sites. In the former case there is a single dominant two-magnon peak at frequency w/J appr. 3.0, whereas in the latter case there are two approximately equal-sized peaks at w/J appr. 2.7 and 3.9. This is in good qualitative agreement with the spinwave calculations including two-magnon processes on the same lattices. Both the Lanczos and the QMC results indicate that the actual infinite-size two-magnon profile is broader than the narrow peak obtained in spinwave theory, but the positions of the maxima agree to within a few percent. The higher-order contributions present in the numerical results are merged with the two-magnon profile and extend up to frequencies w/J appr. 7. The first three frequency cumulants of the spectrum are in excellent agreement with results previously obtained from a series expansion around the Ising limit. Typical experimental B1g$ spectra for La2CuO4 are only slightly broader than what we obtain here. The exchange constant extracted from the peak position is J appr. 1400K, in good agreement with values obtained from neutron scattering and NMR experiments.

Absence of spin gap in the superconducting ladder compound Sr_2Ca_{12}Cu_{24}O_{41}

Transport and 63^Cu-NMR, Knight shift and T_1, measurements performed on the two-leg spin ladders of Sr_2Ca_{12}Cu_{24}O_{41} single crystals show a collapse of the gap in ladder spin excitations when superconductivity is stabilised under a pressure of 29 kbar. These results support the prediction made with exact diagonalisation techniques in two-leg isotropic t-J ladders of a transition between a low-doping spin gap phase and a gapless 1-D Tomonaga-Luttinger regime.

Universal scaling behavior of coupled chains of interacting fermions

The single-particle hopping between two chains is investigated by exact-diagonalizations techniques supplemented by finite-size scaling analysis. In the case of two coupled strongly-correlated chains of spinless fermions, the Taylor expansion of the expectation value of the single-particle interchain hopping operator of an electron at momentum k_F in powers of the interchain hopping t_perp is shown to become unstable in the thermodynamic limit. In the regime alpha alpha_{tp}, the scaling law is proven to change its functional form, thus signaling, for the first time numerically, the onset of coherent transverse two-particle hopping.

The Ferromagnetic Kondo Model for Manganites: Phase Diagram and Charge Segregation Effects

The phase diagram of the ferromagnetic Kondo model for manganites is investigated using computational techniques. In clusters of dimensions 1 and 2, Monte Carlo simulations in the limit where the localized spins are classical show a rich low temperature phase diagram with three dominant regions: (i) a ferromagnetic phase, (ii) phase separation between hole-poor antiferromagnetic and hole-rich ferromagnetic domains, and (iii) a phase with incommensurate spin correlations. Possible experimental consequences of the regime of phase separation are discussed. Studies using the Lanczos algorithm and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group method applied to chains with localized spin 1/2 (with and without Coulombic repulsion for the mobile electrons) and spin 3/2 degrees of freedom give results in excellent agreement with those in the spin localized classical limit. The Dynamical Mean Field ($D=\infty$) approximation was also applied to the same model. At large Hund coupling phase separation and ferromagnetism were identified, again in good agreement with results in low dimensions. In addition, a Monte Carlo study of spin correlations allowed us to estimate the critical temperature for ferromagnetism $T_c^{FM}$ in 3 dimensional clusters. It is concluded that $T_c^{FM}$ is compatible with current experimental results.

Transverse transport in coupled strongly correlated electronic chains

One-particle interchain hopping in a system of coupled Luttinger liquids is investigated by use of exact diagonalizations techniques. Firstly, the two chain problem of spinless fermions is studied in order to see the behaviour of the band splitting as a function of the exponent αwhich characterizes the 1D Luttinger liquid. We give numerical evidence that inter-chain coherent hopping (defined by a non-vanishing splitting) can be totally suppressed for α\sim 0.4 or even smaller αvalues. The transverse conductivity is shown to exhibit a strong incoherent part even when coherent inter-chain hopping is believed to occur (at small αvalues). Implications for the optical experiments in quasi-1D organic or high-T_c superconductors is outlined.

Insulator-Metal Transition in One Dimension Induced by Long-Range Electronic Interactions

The effects of a long range electronic potential on a one dimensional commensurate Charge Density Wave (CDW) state are investigated. Using numerical techniques it is shown that a transition to a metallic ground state is reached as the range of the electron-electron repulsion increases. In this metallic state, the optical conductivity exhibits a large Drude weight. Possible interpretations of our results are discussed.

Dynamical properties of the spin-Peierls compound α'--NaV2O5

Dynamical properties of the novel inorganic spin-Peierls compound α'--NaV2O5 are investigated using a one-dimensional dimerized Heisenberg model. By exact diagonalizations of chains with up to 28 sites, supplemented by a finite-size scaling analysis, the dimerization parameter δis determined by requiring that the model reproduces the experimentally observed spin gap Δ. The dynamical and static spin structure factors are calculated. As for CuGeO3, the existence of a low energy magnon branch separated from the continuum is predicted. The present calculations also suggest that a large magnetic Raman scattering intensity should appear above an energy threshold of 1.9 Δ. The predicted photoemission spectrum is qualitatively similar to results for an undimerized chain due to the presence of sizable short-range antiferromagnetic correlations.

Spin dynamics of the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO_3 under magnetic field

The magnetic field--driven transition in the spin-Peierls system CuGeO_3 associated with the closing of the spin gap is investigated numerically. The field dependence of the spin dynamical structure factor (seen by inelastic neutron scattering) and of the momentum dependent static susceptibility are calculated. In the dimerized phase (H<H_c), we suggest that the strong field dependence of the transverse susceptibility could be experimentally seen from the low temperature spin-echo relaxation rate 1/T_{2G} or the second moment of the NMR spectrum. Above H_c low energy spin excitations appear at incommensurate wave vectors where the longitudinal susceptibility chi_{zz}(q) peaks.

Confinement and transverse conductivity in coupled Luttinger liquids

One--particle interchain hopping in a system of coupled Luttinger liquids is investigated by use of exact diagonalizations techniques. Firstly, the two chains problem of spinless fermions is studied in order to see the behaviour of the band splitting as a function of the exponent $α$ which characterizes the $1D$ Luttinger liquid. Moderate intra-chain interactions can lead to a strong reduction of this splitting. The on-set of the confinement within the individual chains (defined by a vanishing splitting) seems to be governed by $α$. We give numerical evidence that inter-chain coherent hopping can be totally suppressed for $α\sim 0.4$ or even smaller $α$ values. The transverse conductivty is shown to exhibit a strong incoherent part. Even when coherent inter-chain hopping is believed to occur (at small $α$ values), it is shown that the coherent Drude weight is always significantly smaller than the incoherent weight. Implications for the optical experiments in quasi-1D organic or high-$T_c$ superconductors is outlined.

The Magnetization of Cu_2(C_5H_{12}N_2)_2Cl_4 : A Heisenberg Spin Ladder System

We study the magnetization of a Heisenberg spin ladder using exact diagonalization techniques, finding three distinct magnetic phases. We consider the results in relation to the experimental behaviour of the new copper compound Cu_2(C_5H_{12}N_2)_2Cl_4 and deduce that the compound is well described by such a model with a ratio of `chain' to `rung' bond strengths (J/J^\prime) of the order of 0.2, consistent with results from the magnetic susceptibility. The effects of temperature, spin impurities and additional diagonal bonds are presented and we give evidence that these diagonal bonds are indeed of a ferromagnetic nature.

Hole pairing and phonon dynamics in generalized 2D $t-J-$Holstein models

The formation of hole pairs in the planar t-J model is studied in the presence of independent {\it dynamic} vibrations of the in-plane oxygen atoms. In-plane (breathing modes) and out-of-plane (buckling modes) displacements are considered. We find strong evidences in favor of a stabilization of the two hole bound pair by out-of-plane vibrations of the in-plane oxygens. On the contrary, the breathing modes weaken the binding energy of the hole pair. These results are discussed in the context of the superconducting cuprates.

One particle interchain hopping in coupled Hubbard chains

Interchain hopping in systems of coupled chains of correlated electrons is investigated by exact diagonalizations and Quantum-Monte-Carlo methods. For two weakly coupled Hubbard chains at commensurate densities (e.g. n=1/3) the splitting at the Fermi level between bonding and antibonding bands is strongly reduced (but not suppressed) by repulsive interactions extending to a few lattice spacings. The magnitude of this reduction is directly connected to the exponent $α$ of the 1D Luttinger liquid. However, we show that the incoherent part of the single particle spectral function is much less affected by the interchain coupling. This suggests that incoherent interchain hopping could occur for intermediate $α$ values.
