Basis-free Formulas for Characteristic Polynomial Coefficients in Geometric Algebras

In this paper, we discuss characteristic polynomials in (Clifford) geometric algebras ${\mathcal {G}}_{p,q}$ of vector space of dimension $n=p+q$. We present basis-free formulas for all characteristic polynomial coefficients in the cases $n\leq 6$, alongside with a method to obtain general form of these formulas. The formulas involve only the operations of geometric product, summation, and operations of conjugation. All the formulas are verified using computer calculations. We present an analytical proof of all formulas in the case $n=4$, and one of the formulas in the case $n=5$. We present some new properties of the operations of conjugation and grade projection and use them to obtain the results of this paper. We also present formulas for characteristic polynomial coefficients in some special cases. In particular, the formulas for vectors (elements of grade $1$) and basis elements are presented in the case of arbitrary $n$, the formulas for rotors (elements of spin groups) are presented in the cases $n\leq 5$. The results of this paper can be used in different applications of geometric algebras in computer graphics, computer vision, engineering, and physics. The presented basis-free formulas for characteristic polynomial coefficients can also be used in symbolic computation.

On computing the determinant, other characteristic polynomial coefficients, and inverse in Clifford algebras of arbitrary dimension

In this paper, we solve the problem of computing the inverse in Clifford algebras of arbitrary dimension. We present basis-free formulas of different types (explicit and recursive) for the determinant, other characteristic polynomial coefficients, adjugate, and inverse in real Clifford algebras (or geometric algebras) over vector spaces of arbitrary dimension $n$. The formulas involve only the operations of multiplication, summation, and operations of conjugation without explicit use of matrix representation. We use methods of Clifford algebras (including the method of quaternion typification proposed by the author in previous papers and the method of operations of conjugation of special type presented in this paper) and generalizations of numerical methods of matrix theory (the Faddeev-LeVerrier algorithm based on the Cayley-Hamilton theorem; the method of calculating the characteristic polynomial coefficients using Bell polynomials) to the case of Clifford algebras in this paper. We present the construction of operations of conjugation of special type and study relations between these operations and the projection operations onto fixed subspaces of Clifford algebras. We use this construction in the analytical proof of formulas for the determinant, other characteristic polynomial coefficients, adjugate, and inverse in Clifford algebras. The basis-free formulas for the inverse give us basis-free solutions to linear algebraic equations, which are widely used in computer science, image and signal processing, physics, engineering, control theory, etc. The results of this paper can be used in symbolic computation.

On generalization of Lipschitz groups and spin groups

This paper presents some new Lie groups preserving fixed subspaces of geometric algebras (or Clifford algebras) under the twisted adjoint representation. We consider the cases of subspaces of fixed grades and subspaces determined by the grade involution and the reversion. Some of the considered Lie groups can be interpreted as generalizations of Lipschitz groups and spin groups. The Lipschitz groups and the spin groups are subgroups of these Lie groups and coincide with them in the cases of small dimensions. We study the corresponding Lie algebras.

Basis-free solution to Sylvester equation in Clifford algebra of arbitrary dimension

The Sylvester equation and its particular case, the Lyapunov equation, are widely used in image processing, control theory, stability analysis, signal processing, model reduction, and many more. We present basis-free solution to the Sylvester equation in Clifford (geometric) algebra of arbitrary dimension. The basis-free solutions involve only the operations of Clifford (geometric) product, summation, and the operations of conjugation. To obtain the results, we use the concepts of characteristic polynomial, determinant, adjugate, and inverse in Clifford algebras. For the first time, we give alternative formulas for the basis-free solution to the Sylvester equation in the case $n=4$, the proofs for the case $n=5$ and the case of arbitrary dimension $n$. The results can be used in symbolic computation.

On inner automorphisms preserving subspaces of Clifford algebras

In this paper, we consider inner automorphisms that leave invariant fixed subspaces of real and complex Clifford algebras -- subspaces of fixed grades and subspaces determined by the reversion and the grade involution. We present groups of elements that define such inner automorphisms and study their properties. Some of these Lie groups can be interpreted as generalizations of Clifford, Lipschitz, and spin groups. We study the corresponding Lie algebras. Some of the results can be reformulated for the case of more general algebras -- graded central simple algebras or graded central simple algebras with involution.

A note on the hyperbolic singular value decomposition without hyperexchange matrices

We present a new formulation of the hyperbolic singular value decomposition (HSVD) for an arbitrary complex (or real) matrix without hyperexchange matrices and redundant invariant parameters. In our formulation, we use only the concept of pseudo-unitary (or pseudo-orthogonal) matrices. We show that computing the HSVD in the general case is reduced to calculation of eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and generalized eigenvectors of some auxiliary matrices. The new formulation is more natural and useful for some applications. It naturally includes the ordinary singular value decomposition.

Local generalization of Pauli's theorem

Generalized Pauli's theorem, proved by D. S. Shirokov for two sets of anticommuting elements of a real or complexified Clifford algebra of dimension $2^n$, is extended to the case, when both sets of elements depend smoothly on points of Euclidian space of dimension $r$. We prove that in the case of even $n$ there exists a smooth function such that two sets of Clifford algebra elements are connected by a similarity transformation. All cases of connection between two sets are considered in the case of odd $n$. Using the equation for the spin connection of general form, it is shown that the problem of the local Pauli's theorem is equivalent to the problem of existence of a solution of some special system of partial differential equations. The special cases $n=2$, $r\geq 1$ and $n\geq 2$, $r=1$ with more simpler solution of the problem are considered in detail.

On constant solutions of ${\rm SU}(2)$ Yang-Mills equations with arbitrary current in Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^n$

In this paper, we present all constant solutions of the Yang-Mills equations with ${\rm SU}(2)$ gauge symmetry for an arbitrary constant non-Abelian current in Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^n$ of arbitrary finite dimension $n$. Using the invariance of the Yang-Mills equations under the orthogonal transformations of coordinates and gauge invariance, we choose a specific system of coordinates and a specific gauge fixing for each constant current and obtain all constant solutions of the Yang-Mills equations in this system of coordinates with this gauge fixing, and then in the original system of coordinates with the original gauge fixing. We use the singular value decomposition method and the method of two-sheeted covering of orthogonal group by spin group to do this. We prove that the number (0, 1, or 2) of constant solutions of the Yang-Mills equations in terms of the strength of the Yang-Mills field depends on the singular values of the matrix of current. The explicit form of all solutions and the invariant $F^2$ can always be written using singular values of this matrix. The relevance of the study is explained by the fact that the Yang-Mills equations describe electroweak interactions in the case of the Lie group ${\rm SU}(2)$. Nonconstant solutions of the Yang-Mills equations can be considered in the form of series of perturbation theory. The results of this paper are new and can be used to solve some problems in particle physics, in particular, to describe physical vacuum and to fully understand a quantum gauge theory.

Calculation of elements of spin groups using method of averaging in Clifford's geometric algebra

We present a method of computing elements of spin groups in the case of arbitrary dimension. This method generalizes Hestenes method for the case of dimension 4. We use the method of averaging in Clifford's geometric algebra previously proposed by the author. We present explicit formulas for elements of spin group that correspond to the elements of orthogonal groups as two-sheeted covering. These formulas allow us to compute rotors, which connect two different frames related by a rotation in geometric algebra of arbitrary dimension.

Clifford algebras and their applications to Lie groups and spinors

In these lectures, we discuss some well-known facts about Clifford algebras: matrix representations, Cartan's periodicity of 8, double coverings of orthogonal groups by spin groups, Dirac equation in different formalisms, spinors in $n$ dimensions, etc. We also present our point of view on some problems. Namely, we discuss the generalization of the Pauli theorem, the basic ideas of the method of averaging in Clifford algebras, the notion of quaternion type of Clifford algebra elements, the classification of Lie subalgebras of specific type in Clifford algebra, etc.

General solutions of one class of field equations

We find general solutions of some field equations (systems of equations) in pseudo-Euclidian spaces (so-called primitive field equations). These equations are used in the study of the Dirac equation and Yang-Mills equations. These equations are invariant under orthogonal O(p,q) coordinate transformations and invariant under gauge transformations, which depend on some Lie groups. In this paper we use some new geometric objects - Clifford field vector and an algebra of h-forms which is a generalization of the algebra of differential forms and the Atiyah-Kähler algebra.

Constant solutions of Yang-Mills equations and generalized Proca equations

In this paper we present some new equations which we call Yang-Mills-Proca equations (or generalized Proca equations). This system of equations is a generalization of Proca equation and Yang-Mills equations and it is not gauge invariant. We present a number of constant solutions of this system of equations in the case of arbitrary Lie algebra. In details we consider the case when this Lie algebra is Clifford algebra or Grassmann algebra. We consider solutions of Yang-Mills equations in the form of perturbation theory series near the constant solution.

Method of averaging in Clifford algebras

In this paper we consider different operators acting on Clifford algebras. We consider Reynolds operator of Salingaros' vee group. This operator average" an action of Salingaros' vee group on Clifford algebra. We consider conjugate action on Clifford algebra. We present a relation between these operators and projection operators onto fixed subspaces of Clifford algebras. Using method of averaging we present solutions of system of commutator equations.

Calculation of elements of spin groups using generalized Pauli's theorem

We formulate generalizations of Pauli's theorem on the cases of real and complex Clifford algebras of even and odd dimensions. We give analogues of these theorems in matrix formalism. Using these theorems we present an algorithm for computing elements of spin groups that correspond to elements of orthogonal groups as double cover.

Quaternion types of Clifford algebra elements, basis-free approach

We consider Clifford algebras over the field of real or complex numbers as a quotient algebra without fixed basis. We present classification of Clifford algebra elements based on the notion of quaternion type. This classification allows us to reveal and prove a number of new properties of Clifford algebras. We rely on the operations of conjugation to introduce the notion of quaternion type. Also we find relations between the concepts of quaternion type and rank of Clifford algebra element.

Unitary spaces on Clifford algebras

For the complex Clifford algebra Cl(p,q) of dimension n=p+q we define a Hermitian scalar product. This scalar product depends on the signature (p,q) of Clifford algebra. So, we arrive at unitary spaces on Clifford algebras. With the aid of Hermitian idempotents we suggest a new construction of, so called, normal matrix representations of Clifford algebra elements. These representations take into account the structure of unitary space on Clifford algebra.
