Energy Pooling Upconversion in Organic Molecular Systems

A combination of molecular quantum electrodynamics, perturbation theory, and ab initio calculations was used to create a computational methodology capable of estimating the rate of 3-body singlet upconversion in organic molecular assemblies. The approach was applied to quantify the conditions under which such relaxation rates, known as energy pooling, become meaningful for two test systems: stilbene-fluorescein and hexabenzocoronene-oligothiophene. Both exhibit low intra-molecular conversion but inter-molecular configurations exist in which pooling efficiency is at least 90\% when placed in competition with more conventional relaxation pathways. For stilbene-fluorescein, the results are consistent with data generated in an earlier experimental investigation. Exercising these model systems facilitated the development of a set of design rules for the optimization of energy pooling.

Reply to Boglione and Pennington

In a recent article we presented an argument which, we believe, shows to be incorrect an estimate, by Boglione and Pennington, of corrections to the valence (quenched) approximation predictions for properties of the lightest scalar glueball. Boglione and Pennington's reply to our article, it appears to us, fails to address the specific technical issues we raised.

Scalar Quarkonium Masses and Mixing with the Lightest Scalar Glueball

We evaluate the continuum limit of the valence (quenched) approximation to the mass of the lightest scalar quarkonium state for a range of different quark masses and to the mixing energy between these states and the lightest scalar glueball. Our results support the interpretation of $f_0(1710)$ as composed mainly of the lightest scalar glueball.

Coupling Constant and Quark Loop Expansion for Corrections to the Valence Approximation

For full QCD vacuum expectation values we construct an expansion in quark loop count and in powers of a coupling constant. The leading term in this expansion is the valence (quenched) approximation vacuum expectation value. Higher terms give corrections to the valence approximation. A test of the expansion is presented for moderately heavy quarks on a small lattice. We consider briefly an application of the expansion to quarkonium-glueball mixing.

Continuum Limit of Scalar Masses and Mixing Energies

We evaluate the continuum limit of the valence approximation to the mass of scalar quarkonium and to the scalar quarkonium-glueball mixing energy for a range of different quark masses. Our results answer several questions raised by the proposed identification of $f_0(1710)$ as composed primarily of the lightest scalar glueball.

Improved Error Estimate for the Valence Approximation

We construct a systematic mean-field-improved coupling constant and quark loop expansion for corrections to the valence (quenched) approximation to vacuum expectation values in the lattice formulation of QCD. Terms in the expansion are evaluated by a combination of weak coupling perturbation theory and a Monte Carlo algorithm.

The Scalar Quarkonium Spectrum and Quarkonium-Glueball Mixing

We evaluate the valence approximation to the mass of scalar quarkonium and to the mixing energy between scalar quarkonium and the lightest scalar glueball for a range of different lattice sizes and quark masses. Our results support the identification of $f_0(1710)$ as the lightest scalar glueball.

Scalar Quarkonium Masses

We evaluate the valence approximation to the mass of scalar quarkonium for a range of different parameters. Our results strongly suggest that the infinite volume continuum limit of the mass of $s\overline{s}$ scalar quarkonium lies well below the mass of $f_J(1710)$. The resonance $f_0(1500)$ appears to the best candidate for $s\overline{s}$ scalar quarkonium.

Coupling Constants for Scalar Glueball Decay

We evaluate the partial decay widths of the lightest scalar glueball to pairs of pseudoscalar quark-antiquark states. The calculation is done in the valence (quenched) approximation on a $16^3 \time 24$ lattice at $β= 5.7$. These predictions and values obtained earlier for the infinite volume continuum limit of the scalar glueball's mass are in good agreement with the observed properties of $f_J(1710)$ and inconsistent with all other observed meson resonances.

Numerical Evidence for the Observation of a Scalar Glueball

We compute from lattice QCD in the valence (quenched) approximation the partial decay widths of the lightest scalar glueball to pairs of pseudoscalar quark-antiquark states. These predictions and values obtained earlier for the scalar glueball's mass are in good agreement with the observed properties of $f_J(1710)$ and inconsistent with all other observed meson resonances.

Scalar Glueball Decay

We evaluate the coupling constant for the lightest scalar glueball to decay to pseudoscalar meson pairs. The calculation is done in the valence approximation on a $16^3 \times 24$ lattice at $β= 5.70$ for two different values of pseudoscalar meson mass.

Hadron Masses from the Valence Approximation to Lattice QCD

We evaluate pseudoscalar, vector, spin 1/2 and spin 3/2 baryon masses predicted by lattice QCD with Wilson quarks in the valence (quenched) approximation for a range of different values of lattice spacing, lattice volume and quark mass. Extrapolating these results to physical quark mass, then to zero lattice spacing and infinite volume we obtain values for eight mass ratios. We also determine the zero lattice spacing, infinite volume limit of an alternate set of five quantities found without extrapolation in quark mass. Both sets of predictions differ from the corresponding observed values by amounts consistent with the predicted quantities' statistical uncertainties.

The scalar and tensor glueballs in the valence approximation

We evaluate the infinite volume, continuum limit of $0^{++}$ and $2^{++}$ glueball masses in the valence approximation. We find $m_{0^{++}} = 1740 \pm 71 $~MeV and $m_{2^{++}} = 2359 \pm 128 $~MeV, consistent with the interpretation of $f_0 ( 1710 )$ as the lightest scalar glueball.

Meson Decay Constants from the Valence Approximation to Lattice QCD

We evaluate $f_π/ m_ρ$, $f_K/ m_ρ$, $1/f_ρ$, and $ m_ϕ/(f_ϕ m_ρ)$, extrapolated to physical quark mass, zero lattice spacing and infinite volume, for lattice QCD with Wilson quarks in the valence (quenched) approximation. The predicted ratios differ from experiment by amounts ranging from 12\% to 17\% equivalent to between 0.9 and 2.8 times the corresponding statistical uncertainties.
