First evidence of coherent $K^{+}$ meson production in neutrino-nucleus scattering

Neutrino-induced charged-current coherent kaon production, $ν_μA\rightarrowμ^{-}K^{+}A$, is a rare, inelastic electroweak process that brings a $K^+$ on shell and leaves the target nucleus intact in its ground state. This process is significantly lower in rate than neutrino-induced charged-current coherent pion production, because of Cabibbo suppression and a kinematic suppression due to the larger kaon mass. We search for such events in the scintillator tracker of MINERvA by observing the final state $K^+$, $μ^-$ and no other detector activity, and by using the kinematics of the final state particles to reconstruct the small momentum transfer to the nucleus, which is a model-independent characteristic of coherent scattering. We find the first experimental evidence for the process at $3σ$ significance.

Neutrino Flux Predictions for the NuMI Beam

Knowledge of the neutrino flux produced by the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beamline is essential to the neutrino oscillation and neutrino interaction measurements of the MINERvA, MINOS+, NOvA and MicroBooNE experiments at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We have produced a flux prediction which uses all available and relevant hadron production data, incorporating measurements of particle production off of thin targets as well as measurements of particle yields from a spare NuMI target exposed to a 120 GeV proton beam. The result is the most precise flux prediction achieved for a neutrino beam in the one to tens of GeV energy region. We have also compared the prediction to in situ measurements of the neutrino flux and find good agreement.

Measurement of Neutrino Flux from Neutrino-Electron Elastic Scattering

Muon-neutrino elastic scattering on electrons is an observable neutrino process whose cross section is precisely known. Consequently a measurement of this process in an accelerator-based $ν_μ$ beam can improve the knowledge of the absolute neutrino flux impinging upon the detector; typically this knowledge is limited to $\sim$ 10% due to uncertainties in hadron production and focusing. We have isolated a sample of 135 $\pm$ 17 neutrino-electron elastic scattering candidates in the segmented scintillator detector of MINERvA, after subtracting backgrounds and correcting for efficiency. We show how this sample can be used to reduce the total uncertainty on the NuMI $ν_μ$ flux from 9% to 6%. Our measurement provides a flux constraint that is useful to other experiments using the NuMI beam, and this technique is applicable to future neutrino beams operating at multi-GeV energies.

Erratum: Standard-model prediction for direct CP violation in $K\toππ$ decay

In this document we address an error discovered in the ensemble generation for our calculation of the $I=0$ $K\toππ$ amplitude (Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 212001 (2015), arXiv:1505.07863) whereby the same random numbers were used for the two independent quark flavors, resulting in small but measurable correlations between gauge observables separated by 12 units in the y-direction. We conclude that the effects of this error are negligible compared to the overall errors on our calculation.

Standard-model prediction for direct CP violation in $K\toππ$ decay

We report the first lattice QCD calculation of the complex kaon decay amplitude $A_0$ with physical kinematics, using a $32^3\times 64$ lattice volume and a single lattice spacing $a$, with $1/a= 1.3784(68)$ GeV. We find Re$(A_0) = 4.66(1.00)(1.26) \times 10^{-7}$ GeV and Im$(A_0) = -1.90(1.23)(1.08) \times 10^{-11}$ GeV, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The first value is in approximate agreement with the experimental result: Re$(A_0) = 3.3201(18) \times 10^{-7}$ GeV while the second can be used to compute the direct CP violating ratio Re$(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)=1.38(5.15)(4.59)\times 10^{-4}$, which is $2.1σ$ below the experimental value $16.6(2.3)\times 10^{-4}$. The real part of $A_0$ is CP conserving and serves as a test of our method while the result for Re$(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)$ provides a new test of the standard-model theory of CP violation, one which can be made more accurate with increasing computer capability.

Electron-induced limitation of surface plasmon propagation in silver nanowires

Plasmonic circuitry is considered as a promising solution-effective technology for miniaturizing and integrating the next generation of optical nano-devices. A key element is the shared metal network between electrical and optical information enabling an efficient hetero-integration of an electronic control layer and a plasmonic data link. Here, we investigate to what extend surface plasmons and current-carrying electrons interfere in such a shared circuitry. By synchronously recording surface plasmon propagation and electrical output characteristics of single chemically-synthesized silver nanowires we determine the limiting factors hindering the co-propagation of electrical current and surface plasmons in these nanoscale circuits.

Single neutral pion production by charged-current $\barν_μ$ interactions on hydrocarbon at $\langle E_ν\rangle = $ 3.6 GeV

Single neutral pion production via muon antineutrino charged-current interactions in plastic scintillator (CH) is studied using the \minerva detector exposed to the NuMI low-energy, wideband antineutrino beam at Fermilab. Measurement of this process constrains models of neutral pion production in nuclei, which is important because the neutral-current analog is a background for $\barν_e$ appearance oscillation experiments. The differential cross sections for $π^0$ momentum and production angle, for events with a single observed $π^0$ and no charged pions, are presented and compared to model predictions. These results comprise the first measurement of the $π^0$ kinematics for this process.

Charged Pion Production in $ν_μ$ Interactions on Hydrocarbon at $\langle E_ν\rangle$= 4.0 GeV

Charged pion production via charged current $ν_μ$ interactions on plastic (CH) is studied using the MINERvA detector exposed to the NuMI wideband neutrino beam at Fermilab. Events with hadronic invariant mass W $<$ 1.4 GeV are selected to isolate single pion production, which is expected to occur primarily through the $Δ(1232)$ resonance. Cross sections as functions of pion production angle and kinetic energy are reported and compared to predictions from different theoretical calculations and generator-based models, for neutrinos ranging in energy from 1.5 GeV to 10 GeV. The data are best described by calculations which include significant contributions from pion intranuclear rescattering. These measurements constrain the primary interaction rate and the role of final state interactions in pion production, both of which need to be well understood by neutrino oscillation experiments.

Electronic and magneto-optical properties of monolayer phosphorene quantum dots

We theoretically investigate the electronic and magneto-optical properties of rectangular, hexangular, and triangular monolayer phosphorene quantum dots (MPQDs) utilizing the tight-binding method. The electronic states, density of states, electronic density distribution, and Laudau levels as well as the optical absorption spectrum are calculated numerically. Our calculations show that: (1) edge states appear in the band gap in all kinds of MPQDs regardless of their shapes and edge configurations due to the anisotropic electron hopping in monolayer phosphorene (MLP). Electrons in any edge state appear only in the armchair direction of the dot boundary, which is distinct from that in graphene quantum dots; (2) the magnetic levels of MPQDs exhibit a Hofstadter-butterfly spectrum and approach the Landau levels of MLP as the magnetic field increases . A "flat band" appears in the magneto-energy spectrum which is totally different from that of MLP; (3) the electronic and optical properties can be tuned by the dot size, the types of boundary edges and the external magnetic field.

$K \rightarrow ππ$ $ΔI=3/2$ decay amplitude in the continuum limit

We present new results for the amplitude $A_2$ for a kaon to decay into two pions with isospin $I=2$: Re$A_2 = 1.50(4)_\mathrm{stat}(14)_\mathrm{syst}\times 10^{-8}$ GeV; Im$A_2 = -6.99(20)_\mathrm{stat}(84)_\mathrm{syst}\times 10^{-13}$ GeV. These results were obtained from two ensembles generated at physical quark masses (in the isospin limit) with inverse lattice spacings $a^{-1}=1.728(4)$ GeV and $2.358(7)$ GeV. We are therefore able to perform a continuum extrapolation and hence largely to remove the dominant systematic uncertainty from our earlier results, that due to lattice artefacts. The only previous lattice computation of $K\toππ$ decays at physical kinematics was performed using an ensemble at a single, rather coarse, value of the lattice spacing ($a^{-1}\simeq 1.37(1)$ GeV). We confirm the observation that there is a significant cancellation between the two dominant contributions to Re$A_2$ which we suggest is an important ingredient in understanding the $ΔI=1/2$ rule, Re$A_0$/Re$A_2\simeq 22.5$, where the subscript denotes the total isospin of the two-pion final state. Our result for $A_2$ implies that the electroweak penguin contribution to $ε^\prime/ε$ is Re($ε^\prime/ε)_\textrm{EWP}=-(6.6\pm 1.0)\times 10^{-4}$.

Landau levels and magneto-transport property of monolayer phosphorene

We investigate theoretically the Landau levels (LLs) and magneto-transport properties of phosphorene under a perpendicular magnetic field within the framework of the effective \textbf{\emph{k$\cdot$p}} Hamiltonian and tight-binding (TB) model. At low field regime, we find that the LLs linearly depend both on the LL index $n$ and magnetic field $B$, which is similar with that of conventional semiconductor two-dimensional electron gas. The Landau splittings of conduction and valence band are different and the wavefunctions corresponding to the LLs are strongly anisotropic due to the different anisotropic effective masses. An analytical expression for the LLs in low energy regime is obtained via solving the decoupled Hamiltonian, which agrees well with the numerical calculations. At high magnetic regime, a self-similar Hofstadter butterfly (HB) spectrum is obtained by using the TB model. The HB spectrum is consistent with the Landau level fan calculated from the effective \textbf{\emph{k$\cdot$p}} theory in a wide regime of magnetic fields. We find the LLs of phosphorene nanoribbon depend strongly on the ribbon orientation due to the anisotropic hopping parameters. The Hall and the longitudinal conductances (resistances) clearly reveal the structure of LLs.

MINERvA neutrino detector response measured with test beam data

The MINERvA collaboration operated a scaled-down replica of the solid scintillator tracking and sampling calorimeter regions of the MINERvA detector in a hadron test beam at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility. This article reports measurements with samples of protons, pions, and electrons from 0.35 to 2.0 GeV/c momentum. The calorimetric response to protons, pions, and electrons are obtained from these data. A measurement of the parameter in Birks' law and an estimate of the tracking efficiency are extracted from the proton sample. Overall the data are well described by a Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulation of the detector and particle interactions with agreements better than 4%, though some features of the data are not precisely modeled. These measurements are used to tune the MINERvA detector simulation and evaluate systematic uncertainties in support of the MINERvA neutrino cross section measurement program.

Measurement of muon plus proton final states in $ν_μ$ Interactions on Hydrocarbon at $\langle$$E_ν$$\rangle$ = 4.2 GeV

A study of charged-current muon neutrino scattering on hydrocarbon in which the final state includes a muon and a proton and no pions is presented. Although this signature has the topology of neutrino quasielastic scattering from neutrons, the event sample contains contributions from both quasielastic and inelastic processes where pions are absorbed in the nucleus. The analysis accepts events with muon production angles up to 70$^{\circ}$ and proton kinetic energies greater than 110 MeV. The extracted cross section, when based completely on hadronic kinematics, is well-described by a simple relativistic Fermi gas nuclear model including the neutrino event generator modeling for inelastic processes and particle transportation through the nucleus. This is in contrast to the quasielastic cross section based on muon kinematics, which is best described by an extended model that incorporates multi-nucleon correlations. This measurement guides the formulation of a complete description of neutrino-nucleus interactions that encompasses the hadronic as well as the leptonic aspects of this process.

Measurement of Ratios of $ν_μ$ Charged-Current Cross Sections on C, Fe, and Pb to CH at Neutrino Energies 2-20 GeV

We present measurements of $ν_μ$ charged-current cross section ratios on carbon, iron, and lead relative to a scintillator (CH) using the fine-grained MINERvA detector exposed to the NuMI neutrino beam at Fermilab. The measurements utilize events of energies $2 =8~GeV$, which have a reconstructed $μ^{-}$ scattering angle less than $17^\circ$ to extract ratios of inclusive total cross sections as a function of neutrino energy $E_ν$ and flux-integrated differential cross sections with respect to the Bjorken scaling variable $x$. These results provide the first high-statistics direct measurements of nuclear effects in neutrino scattering using different targets in the same neutrino beam. Measured cross section ratios exhibit a relative depletion at low $x$ and enhancement at large $x$. Both become more pronounced as the nucleon number of the target nucleus increases. The data are not reproduced by GENIE, a conventional neutrino-nucleus scattering simulation, or by the alternative models for the nuclear dependence of inelastic scattering that are considered.

Measurement of Coherent Production of $π^\pm$ in Neutrino and Anti-Neutrino Beams on Carbon from $E_ν$ of $1.5$ to $20$ GeV

Neutrino-induced coherent charged pion production on nuclei, $\stackrel{(-)}ν_μA\toμ^\pmπ^\mp A$ is a rare, inelastic interaction in which a small squared four-momentum $| t|$ is transferred to the recoil nucleus leaving it intact in the reaction. In the scintillator tracker of MINERvA, we remove events with evidence of particles from nuclear breakup and reconstruct $| t|$ from the final state pion and muon. We select low $| t|$ events to isolate a sample rich in coherent candidates. By selecting low $| t|$ events we produce a model-independent measurement of the differential cross section for coherent scattering of neutrinos and anti-neutrinos on carbon. We find poor agreement with the predicted kinematics in neutrino generators used by current oscillation experiments.

Radio-mode feedback in local AGNs: dependence on the central black hole parameters

Radio mode feedback, in which most of the energy of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) is released in a kinetic form via radio-emitting jets, is thought to play an important role in the maintenance of massive galaxies in the present-day Universe. We study the link between radio emission and the properties of the central black hole in a large sample of local radio galaxies drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), based on the catalogue of Best and Heckman (2012). Our sample is mainly dominated by massive black holes (mostly in the range $10^8-10^9 M_{\odot}$) accreting at very low Eddington ratios (typically $λ< 0.01$). In broad agreement with previously reported trends, we find that radio galaxies are preferentially associated with the more massive black holes, and that the radio loudness parameter seems to increase with decreasing Eddington ratio. We compare our results with previous studies in the literature, noting potential biases. The majority of the local radio galaxies in our sample are currently in a radiatively inefficient accretion regime, where kinetic feedback dominates over radiative feedback. We discuss possible physical interpretations of the observed trends in the context of a two-stage feedback process involving a transition in the underlying accretion modes.

Light amplification by stimulated emission from an optically pumped molecular junction in a scanning tunneling microscope

Here, we introduce and experimentally demonstrate optical amplification and stimulated emission from a single optically pumped molecular tunneling junction of a scanning tunneling microscope. The gap between a sharp gold tip and a flat gold substrate covered with a self-assembled monolayer of 5-chloro-2-mercaptobenzothiazole molecules forms an extremely small optical gain medium. When electrons tunnel from the molecules highest occupied molecular orbital to the tip, holes are left behind. These can be repopulated by hot electrons induced by the laser-driven plasmon oscillation on the metal surfaces enclosing the cavity. Solving the laser-rate equations for this system shows that the repopulation process can be efficiently stimulated by the gap modes near field, TERS scattering from neighboring molecules acting as an optical seed. Our results demonstrate how optical enhancement inside the plasmonic cavity can be further increased by a stronger localization via tunneling through molecules. We anticipate that stimulated emission from an STM junction will advance our fundamental understanding of quantum plasmonics and lead to new analytical applications. Furthermore, this concept represents the basis for novel ultra-small, fast, optically and electronically switchable devices and could find applications in high-speed signal processing and optical telecommunications.

Determination of the $A_2$ amplitude of $K \rightarrow ππ$ decays

We review the status of recent calculations by the RBC-UKQCD collaboration of the complex amplitude $A_2$, corresponding to the decay of a kaon to a two pion state with total isospin 2. In particular, we present preliminary results from two new ensembles: $48^3 \times 96$ with $a^{-1}=1.73$ GeV and $64^3 \times 128$ with $a^{-1}=2.3$ GeV, both at physical kinematics. Both ensembles were generated Iwasaki gauge action and domain wall fermion action with 2+1 flavours. These results, in comparison to our earlier ones on a $32^3$ DSDR lattice with $a^{-1}=1.36$ GeV, enable us to significantly reduce the discretization errors. The partial cancellation between the two dominant contractions contributing to Re($A_2$) has been confirmed and we believe that this cancellation is a major contribution to the $ΔI=1/2$ rule.
