Comment on ''Phase Diagram of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ Probed in the Infrared: Imprints of Charge Stripe Excitations''

Recently Lucarelli {\it et al.} have reported\cite{lucarelli} temperature-dependence of the in-plane optical reflectivity of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ over a wide doping range, focusing on the infrared peaks at 30 cm$^{-1}$ (for $x$=0.12), 250 cm$^{-1}$ and 510 cm$^{-1}$. They interpreted the first peak (30 cm$^{-1}$) as a signature of charge stripe ordering, while the latter two (250 cm$^{-1}$ and 510 cm$^{-1}$) are attributed to the polaronic charge excitations. However, careful readers would notice that the reported spectra are largely different from those so far measured on the same system. As we illustrate below, all these peaks are caused by an uncontrolled leakage of the c-axis reflectivity into the measured spectra.

Heavy Carriers and Non-Drude Optical Conductivity in MnSi

Optical properties of the weakly helimagnetic metal MnSi have been determined in the photon energy range from 2 meV to 4.5 eV using the combination of grazing incidence reflectance at 80 degrees (2 meV to 0.8 eV) and ellipsometry (0.8 to 4.5 eV). As the sample is cooled below 100 K the effective mass becomes strongly frequency dependent at low frequencies, while the scattering rate developes a linear frequency dependence. The complex optical conductivity can be described by the phenomenological relation σ(ω,T) \propto (Γ(T)+iω)^{-1/2} used for cuprates and ruthenates.

The c-axis optical sum rule and possible new collective mode in LSCO

We present the c-axis optical conductivity $σ_{1c}(ω, T)$ of underdoped ($x$ = 0.12) and optimally doped ($x$ = 0.15) LSCO from 4 meV to 1.8 eV obtained by a combination of reflectivity and transmission spectra. In addition to the opening of the superconducting gap, we observe an {\it increase} of conductivity above the gap up to 270 meV with a maximal effect at about 120 meV. This may indicate a new collective mode at a surprisingly large energy scale. The Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham sum rule is violated for both doping levels. Although the relative value of the violation is much larger for the underdoped sample, the absolute increase of the low-frequency spectral weight, including that of the condensate, is higher in the optimally doped regime. Our results resemble in many respects the observations in YBCO.

Superconductivity by Kinetic Energy Saving?

A brief introduction is given in the generic microscopic framework of superconductivity. The consequences for the temperature dependence of the kinetic energy, and the correlation energy are discussed for two cases: The BCS scenario and the non-Fermi liquid scenario. A quantitative comparison is made between the BCS-prediction for d-wave pairing in a band with nearest neighbor and next-nearest neighbor hoppping and the experimental specific heat and the optical intraband spectral weight along the plane. We show that the BCS-prediction produces the wrong sign for the kink at Tc of the intraband spectral weight, even though the model calculation agrees well with the specific heat.

Signatures of polaronic excitations in quasi-one-dimensional LaTiO$_{3.41}$

The optical properties of quasi-one-dimensional metallic LaTiO$_{3.41}$ are studied for the polarization along the $a$ and $b$ axes. With decreasing temperature modes appear along both directions suggestive for a phase transition. The broadness of these modes along the conducting axis might be due to the coupling of the phonons to low-energy electronic excitations across an energy gap. We observe a pronounced midinfrared band with a temperature dependence consistent with (interacting) polaron models. The polaronic picture is corroborated by the presence of strong electron-phonon coupling and the temperature dependence of the dc conductivity.

Charge ordering signatures in the optical properties of beta-Na0.33V2O5

Temperature dependent optical spectra are reported for beta-Na0.33V2O5. The sodium ordering transition at T_Na = 240 K, and in particular the charge ordering transition at T_MI = 136 K strongly influence the optical spectra. The metal-insulator transition at \tmi leads to the opening of a psuedogap (\hbarω= 1700 cm-1), and to the appearance of a large number of optical phonons. These observations, and the presence of a mid-infrared band (typical for low dimensional metals) strongly suggests that the charge carriers in beta-Na0.33V2O5 are small polarons.

Charge and sodium ordering in beta-Na_0.33V_2O_5

Polarized Raman and optical spectra for the quasi one-dimensional metallic vanadate beta-Na0.33V2O3 are reported for various temperatures. The spectra are discussed in the light of the sodium and charge ordering transitions occurring in this material, and demonstrate the presence of strong electron phonon coupling.

Condensation Energy and High Tc Superconductivity

From an analysis of the specific heat of one of the cuprate superconductors it is shown, that even if a large part of the experimental specific heat associated with the superconducting phase transition is due to fluctuations, this part must be counted when one tries to extract the condensation energy from the data. Previous work by Chakravarty, Kee and Abrahams, where the fluctuation part was subtracted, has resulted in an incorrect estimation of the condensation energy.

Two-gap superconductivity in MgB$_{2}$: clean or dirty?

A large number of experimental facts and theoretical arguments favor a two-gap model for superconductivity in MgB$_{2}$. However, this model predicts strong suppression of the critical temperature by interband impurity scattering and, presumably, a strong correlation between the critical temperature and the residual resistivity. No such correlation has been observed. We argue that this fact can be understood if the band disparity of the electronic structure is taken into account, not only in the superconducting state, but also in normal transport.

Manifestation of multiband optical properties of MgB$_2$

The optical conductivity of MgB$_2$ has been determined on a dense polycrystalline sample in the spectral range 6 meV - 4.6 eV using a combination of ellipsometric and normal incidence reflectivity measurements. $σ_{1}(ω)$ features a narrow Drude peak with anomalously small plasma frequency (1.4 eV) and a very broad "dome" structure, which comprises the bulk of the low-energy spectral weight. This fact can be reconciled with the results of band structure calculations by assuming that charge carriers from the 2D $σ$-bands and the 3D $π$-bands have principally different impurity scattering rates and negligible interband scattering. This also explains a surprisingly small correlation between the defect concentration and $T_c$, expected for a two-gap superconductor. The large 3D carrier scattering rate suggests their proximity to the localization limit.

Magnetic Field Dependence of the Transverse Plasmon in SmLa_0.8Sr_0.2CuO_4

The magnetic field and temperature dependence of the transverse and longitudinal plasmons in SmLa_0.8Sr_0.2CuO_{4-δ} have been measured for frequencies 5 < nu < 30 cm^{-1} and magnetic fields 0 < B < 7 T. A transition between a vortex glass and a vortex liquid regime, which revealed different field dependencies of the resonance frequencies, could be clearly observed. The positions and the spectral weights of the plasmons were successfully described using the multilayer model (Phys. Rev. B 64, 024530, 2001), which takes the compressibility of the electronic liquid into account. The compressibility is shown to remain constant in the broad range of field and temperature, which strongly supports the applicability of the model. The absolute value of the compressibility is close to that of a two-dimensional noninteracting electron gas.

Optical measurements of the superconducting gap in MgB2

Far-infrared reflectivity studies on the polycrystalline intermetallic compound MgB_2 with a superconducting transition temperature T_c=39 K were performed at temperatures 20 K to 300 K. We observe a significant raise of the superconducting-to-normal state reflectivity ratio below 70 cm^{-1}, with a maximum at about 25-30 cm^{-1}, which gives a lower estimate of the superconducting gap of 2Δ(0)\approx3-4 meV.

Effects of Vortex Pinning and Thermal Fluctuations on the Josephson Plasma Resonance in Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 and YBa2Cu3O6.5

Infrared spectroscopy has been used to investigate the temperature dependence and c-axis magnetic field dependence of the Josephson plasma resonance in optimally doped Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 thin films, and underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.5 ortho - II single crystals. The resonances are directly related to the c-axis penetration depths, yielding low temperature, zero fields values of about 20 micrometer, and 7 micrometer respectively. While the temperature dependencies of the resonances in the two compounds are very similar, the magnetic field dependence in YBCO is much weaker. We attribute this weak magnetic field dependence to the lower anisotropy of YBCO, and discuss the observed behaviours in terms of thermal fluctuations and pinning of pancake vortices, valid for highly anisotropic layered superconductors.

Observation of the Transverse Optical Plasmon in SmLa0.8Sr0.2CuO4-d

We present microwave and infrared measurements on SmLa0.8Sr0.2CuO4-d, which are direct evidence for the existence of a transverse optical plasma mode, observed as a peak in the c-axis optical conductivity. This mode appears as a consequence of the existence of two different intrinsic Josephson couplings between the CuO2 layers, one with a Sm2O2 block layer, and the other one with a (La,Sr)O block layer. From the frequencies and the intensities of the collective modes we determine the value of the compressibility of the two dimensional electron fluid in the copper oxygen planes.

Transverse optical Josephson plasmons, equations of motion

A detailed calculation is presented of the dielectric function in superconducttors consisting of two Josephson coupled superconducting layers per unit cell, taking into account the effect of finite compressibility of the electron fluid. From the model it follows, that two longitudinal, and one transverse optical Josephson plasma resonance exist in these materials, for electric field polarization perpendicular to the planes. The latter mode appears as a resonance in the transverse dielectric function, and it couples directly to the electrical field vector of infrared radiation. A shift of all plasma frequencies, and a reduction of the intensity of the transverse optical Josephson plasmon is shown to result from the finite compressibility of the electron fluid.

Infrared and optical spectroscopy of alpha and gamma-phase Ce

We determined the optical properties of alpha- and gamma-phase Ce in the photon energy range from 60 meV to 2.5 eV using ellipsometry and grazing incidence reflectometry. We observe significant changes of the optical conductivity, the dynamical scattering rate, and the effective mass between alpha- and gamma-cerium. The alpha-phase is characterized by Fermi-liquid frequency dependent scattering rate, and an effective mass of about 20 m_e on an energy scale of about 0.2 eV. In gamma-Ce the charge carriers have a large scattering rate in the far infrared, and a carrier mass characteristic of 5d band electrons. In addition we observe a prominent absorption feature in alpha-Ce, which is absent in gamma-Ce, indicating significant differences of the electronic structure between the two phases.

Optical properties and electronic structure of Ca-doped alpha'-NaV2O5

The dielectric function of alpha'-Na(1-x)Ca(x)V2O5 (0 < x < 20%) was measured for the a and b axes in the photon energy range 0.8-4.5 eV at room temperature. By varying the Ca-concentration we control the relative abundancy of V4+ and V5+. We observe that the intensity of the main optical absorption peak at 1 eV is proportional to the number of V5+ ions. This rules out the interpretation as a V4+ d-d excitation, and it establishes that this is the on-rung bonding-antibonding transition.

Low temperature ellipsometry of NaV2O5

The dielectric function of alpha'NaV2O5 was measured with electric field along the a and b axes in the photon energy range 0.8-4.5 eV for temperatures down to 4K. We observe a pronounced decrease of the intensity of the 1 eV peak upon increasing temperature with an activation energy of about 25meV, indicating that a finite fraction of the rungs becomes occupied with two electrons while others are emptied as temperature increases. No appreciable shifts of peaks were found s in the valence state of individual V atoms at the phase transition is very small. A remarkable inflection of this temperature dependence at the phase transition at 34 K indicates that charge ordering is associated with the low temperature phase.
