C-axis optical properties of high Tc cuprates

A review is given of the experimental status of the interlayer coupling energy in the cuprates. A second c-axis plasmon is identified in the double layer compound Y123 for various dopings. The anomalous transport properties along the c-direction and in the planar directions are compared to model calculations based on strongly anisotropic scattering. An excellent description of the optical data at optimal doping is obtained if an anomalously large anisotropy of the scattering rate between cold spots and hot spots is assumed. This raises questions as to the physical meaning of these parameters.

Extensive infrared spectroscopic study of CuO: signatures of strong spin-phonon interaction and structural distortion

Optical properties of single-crystal monoclinic CuO in the range 70 - 6000 \cm were studied at temperatures from 7 to 300 K. Normal reflection spectra were obtained from the (001) and (010) crystal faces thus giving for the first time separate data for the $A_{u}$ and $B_{u}$ phonon modes excited in the purely transverse way (TO modes). Mode parameters, including polarizations of the $B_{u}$ modes not determined by the crystal symmetry, were extracted by the dispersion analysis of reflectivity curves as a function of temperature. Spectra of all the components of the optical conductivity tensor were obtained using the Kramers-Kronig method recently extended to the case of the low-symmetry crystals. The number of strong phonon modes is in agreement with the factor-group analysis for the crystal structure, currently accepted for the CuO. However, several "extra" modes of minor intensity are detected. Comparison of frequencies of "extra" modes with the available phonon dispersion curves points to possible "diagonal" doubling of the unit cell \{{\bf a}, {\bf b}, {\bf c}\} $\to$ \{{\bf a}+{\bf c}, {\bf b}, {\bf a}-{\bf c}\} and formation of the superlattice. The previously reported softening of the $A^{3}_{u}$ mode ($\sim$ 400 \cm) with cooling at $T_{N}$ is found to be $\sim$ 10 % for the TO mode. The mode is very broad at high temperatures and strongly narrows in the AFM phase. We attribute this effect to strong resonance coupling of this mode to optical or acoustic bi-magnons and reconstruction of the magnetic excitations spectrum at the Néel point. A significant anisotropy of $ε^{\infty}$ is observed: it was found to be 5.9 along the {\bf b}-axis, 6.2 along the {[}101{]} chains and 7.8 the {[}10$\bar{1}${]} chains. The "transverse" effective charge is value is about 2 electrons.

C-axis Penetration Depth and Inter-layer Conductivity in the Thallium Based Cuprate Superconductors

The c-axis Josephson plasmon in optimally doped single-layer and bi-layer high Tc cuprates Tl2201 and Tl2212 have been investigated using infrared spectroscopy. We observed the plasma frequencies for these two compounds at 27.8 and 25.6 cm-1 respectively, which we interpret as a Josephson resonance across the TlO blocking layers. No maximum in the temperature dependence of the c-axis conductivity was observed below Tc, indicating that even in the superconducting state a coherent quasi-particle contribution to the c-axis conductivity is absent or very weak, in contrast to the behaviour of the ab-plane conductivity.

Systematics of c-axis Phonons in the Thallium and Bismuth Based Cuprate Superconductors

We present grazing incidence reflectivity measurements in the far infrared region at temperatures above and below Tc for a series of thallium (Tl2Ba2CuO6, Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8) and bismuth (Bi2Sr2CuO6, Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8, and Bi(2-x)Pb(x)Sr2CaCu2O8) based cuprate superconductors. From the spectra, which are dominated by the c-axis phonons, longitudinal frequencies (LO) are directly obtained. The reflectivity curves are well fitted by a series of Lorentz oscillators. In this way the transverse (TO) phonon frequencies were accurately determined. On the basis of the comparative study of the Bi and Tl based cuprates with different number of CuO2 layers per unit cell, we suggest modifications of the assignment of the main oxygen modes. We compare the LO frequencies in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 and Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 obtained from intrinsic Josephson junction characteristics with our measurements, and explain the discrepancy in LO frequencies obtained by the two different methods.

Optical spectroscopy of pure and doped CuGeO3

We investigated in detail the optical properties of several Cu(1-delta)Mg(delta)GeO3 (with delta=0,0.01), and CuGe(1-x)B(x)O3 with B=Si (x=0,0.007,0.05,0.1), and Al (x=0,0.01) single crystals, in the frequency range 20-32000 cm^-1. We report temperature dependent reflectivity and transmission measurements, performed with polarized light in order to probe the anisotropy of the crystals along the b and c axes, and optical conductivity spectra obtained by Kramers-Kronig transformation or direct inversion of the Fresnel formula. Special emphasis is given to the far-infrared phonon spectra. The temperature dependence of the phonon parameters is presented and discussed in relation to the soft mode issue in CuGeO3. For T<Tsp we could detect zone boundary folded modes activated by the spin-Peierls phase transition. Following the temperature dependence of these modes, which shows the second order character of the phase transition, we were able to study the effect of doping on Tsp. Moreover, in transmission experiments we detected a direct singlet-triplet excitation at 44 cm^-1, across the magnetic gap, which is not understandable on the basis of the magnetic excitation spectrum so far assumed for CuGeO3. The optical activity of this excitation and its polarization dependence confirm the existence of a second (optical) magnetic branch, recently suggested on the basis of inelastic neutron scattering data. The anisotropy in the magnetic exchange constants along the b axis, necessary for the optical triplet mode to gain a finite intensity, and the strong effect of Si substitution on the phonon spectra are discussed in relation to the alternative space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), recently proposed for CuGeO3 in the high temperature uniform phase.

Optical spectroscopic study of the interplay of spin and charge in NaV2O5

We investigate the temperature dependent optical properties of NaV2O5, in the energy range 4meV-4eV. The symmetry of the system is discussed on the basis of infrared phonon spectra. By analyzing the optically allowed phonons at temperatures below and above the phase transition, we conclude that a second-order change to a larger unit cell takes place below 34 K, with a fluctuation regime extending over a broad temperature range. In the high temperature undistorted phase, we find good agreement with the recently proposed centrosymmetric space group Pmmn. On the other hand, the detailed analysis of the electronic excitations detected in the optical conductivity, provides direct evidence for a charge disproportionated electronic ground-state, at least on a locale scale: A consistent interpretation of both structural and optical conductivity data requires an asymmetrical charge distribution on each rung, without any long range order. We show that, because of the locally broken symmetry, spin-flip excitations carry a finite electric dipole moment, which is responsible for the detection of direct two-magnon optical absorption processes for E parallel to the a axis. The charged-magnon model, developed to interpret the optical conductivity of NaV2O5, is described in detail, and its relevance to other strongly correlated electron systems, where the interplay of spin and charge plays a crucial role in determining the low energy electrodynamics, is discussed.

Mid-infrared absorption in YBa2Cu3O6: Failure of spin-wave theory in undoped cuprates?

The optical conductivity sigma (omega) of undoped YBa2Cu3O6 is studied in detail in the mid-infrared range. Substitutions on all but the Ba site are used to identify the prominent absorption processes at 2800 and 3800 cm^-1. Experimental evidence for bimagnon-plus-phonon absorption is collected. A more critical analysis of the lineshape and the spectral weight reveals the limits of this approach. Although phonon-2-magnon multiple scattering seems to reproduce the lineshape, the necessary coupling is unrealistically large. The strong increase of high frequency spectral weight with increasing temperature makes the failure of spin-wave theory even more evident.

Anisotropy of the optical conductivity of high Tc cuprates

The optical conductivity along and perpendicular to the planes is calculated assuming strong k-dependence of the scattering rate and the c-axis hopping parameter. Closed analytical expressions for the optical conductivy along these directions are obtained, and are shown to be integrable at low and high frequencies. A large and qualitatively different frequency dependence for both polarizations follows directly from the model. The expression for the in-plane conductivity has an effective scattering rate proportional to frequency, and can be easily generalized to provide a simple analytical expression, which may replace the Drude formula in the case of non-Fermi liquids.

Observation of out-of-phase bilayer plasmons in YBa_2Cu_3O_7-delta

The temperature dependence of the c-axis optical conductivity σ(ω) of optimally and overdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_x (x=6.93 and 7) is reported in the far- (FIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) range. Below T_c we observe a transfer of spectral weight from the FIR not only to the condensate at ω= 0, but also to a new peak in the MIR. This peak is naturally explained as a transverse out-of-phase bilayer plasmon by a model for σ(ω) which takes the layered crystal structure into account. With decreasing doping the plasmon shifts to lower frequencies and can be identified with the surprising and so far not understood FIR feature reported in underdoped bilayer cuprates.

Global and Local Measures of the Intrinsic Josephson Coupling in Tl2Ba2CuO6

The Intlerlayer Josephson coupling between the planes of Tl2Ba2CuO6 was determined using infrared spectroscopy and magnetic flux vortex imaging. These methods give a consistent value of $ω_J$= 28 cm$^{-1}$ which, when combined with the condensation energy produces a discrepancy of at least an order of magnitude with deductions based on the interlayer tunneling model.

The symmetry problem in NaV2O5

We discuss the symmetry of NaV2O5 in the high temperature phase on the basis of optical conductivity data. Conclusive information cannot be obtained by studying the optically allowed lattice vibrations. However, intensity and polarization of the electronic excitations give a direct indication for a broken-parity electronic ground-state. This is responsible for the detection of charged bi-magnons in the optical spectrum.

Charged Magnons in NaV2O5

We investigated the temperature-dependent optical conductivity of NaV2O5 in the energy range 4 meV-4 eV. The intensities and the polarization dependence of the detected electronic excitations give a direct indication for a broken-parity electronic ground-state and for a non-centrosymmetric crystal structure of the system in the high-temperature phase. A direct two-magnon optical absorption process, proposed in this Letter, is in quantitative agreement with the optical data. By analyzing the optically allowed phonons at various temperatures above and below the phase transition, we conclude that a second-order change to a larger unit cell takes place below 34 K.

Spin, Charge, and Bonding in Transition Metal Mono Silicides

We review some of the relevant physical properties of the transition metal mono-silicides with the FeSi structure (CrSi, MnSi, FeSi, CoSi, NiSi, etc) and explore the relation between their structural characteristics and the electronic properties. We confirm the suggestion orginally made by Pauling, that the FeSi structure supports two quasi-atomic d-states at the transition metal atom. This shell contains from 0 to 4 electrons in the sequence CrSi to NiSi. In FeSi the two quasi-atomic d-electrons are responsible for the high temperature S=1 state, which is compensated for T=0 by two itinerant electrons associated with the Fe-Si resonance bonds.

Infrared signatures of the spin-Peierls transition in CuGeO3

We investigated the infrared reflectivity of several Mg- and Si-substituted CuGeO3 single crystals. The temperature dependent b-axis and c-axis optical response is reported. For T<Tsp we detected the activation of zone-boundary phonons along the b axis of the crystal on the pure sample and for 1% Mg and 0.7% Si concentrations. From a detailed analysis of the phonon parameters the redshift of the B2u mode at 48 cm^-1 is observed and discussed in relation to the soft mode expected to drive the spin-Peierls phase transition in CuGeO3. Moreover, the polarization dependence of a magnetic excitation measured in transmission at 44 cm^-1 has been investigated.

Infrared reflectivity of pure and doped CuGeO3

We investigated the far- and mid-infrared reflectivity (20-6000 wavenumber) of several pure and doped CuGeO3 single crystals. The b-axis and c-axis optical response is presented for different temperatures between 4 K and 300 K. Moreover, a full group theoretical analysis of the lattice vibrational modes of CuGeO3 in the high temperature undistorted phase as well as in the low temperature spin-Peierls phase is reported and compared to the experimental results. We observe the activation of zone boundary phonons along the b axis of the crystal below the spin-Peierls transition temperature.

Optical phonons in the reflectivity spectrum of FeSi

We measured the reflectivity of a single crystal of FeSi from the far-infrared to the visible region (50-20000 wavenumber), varying the temperature between 4 and 300 K. The optical conductivity function was obtained via Kramers-Kronig analysis. We observed a dirty metal-like behavior at room temperature and the opening of a gap of 70 meV at low temperature. The results of a group theoretical analysis of the lattice vibrational modes are presented and compared to the experimental data. Of the five optical phonons expected for this material only four have been observed in the far-infrared region.

Penetration depth and conductivity of NbN and DyBa_2Cu_3O_7 thin films measured by mm-wave transmission

Using mm-wave transmission we obtain information about both the real and imaginary part of the dielectric function of superconducting thin films. This is done by fitting the Fabry-Perot resonance spectrum for the film plus substrate over a broad frequency range (110-180 GHz) using the full Fresnel equations and a two-fluid description for the dielectric function. Depending on the thickness of the film, the transmission is mainly determined by the real or the imaginary part of the dielectric function. For NbN we find a behavior consistent with the BCS-formalism. For DyBa_2Cu_3O_7, results on films of thicknesses ranging from 20 to 80 nm are presented. We find a quadratic temperature dependence of the penetration depth at low temperatures and a strongly enhanced conductivity below T_c, indicative of a strong reduction of the quasiparticle scattering. For the 20 nm film the transmission is dominated by the real part of the conductivity, even down to 60 K.

In-plane optical response of Bi2Sr2CuO6

We report on infrared reflectivity measurements of the $ab$-plane response of superconducting Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_6$ single crystals. The frequency dependent conductivity has a maximum near 700 cm$^{-1}$ at room temperature, which shifts to lower frequency and merges with a Drude-peak below 100 K. We attribute the unusual behaviour of the mid-infrared conductivity to low frequency transitions between electronic bands of mainly BiO character near the $\overline{M}$ point. The linear temperature dependence of the low-frequency resistivity can be followed down to approximately 40 K where it saturates.
