Orientation of point nodes and nonunitary triplet pairing tuned by the easy-axis magnetization in UTe2

The gap structure of a novel uranium-based superconductor UTe$_2$, situated in the vicinity of ferromagnetic quantum criticality, has been investigated via specific-heat $C(T,H,Ω)$ measurements in various field orientations. Its angular $Ω(ϕ,θ)$ variation shows a characteristic shoulder anomaly with a local minimum in $H \parallel a$ at moderate fields rotated within the $ab$ and $ac$ planes. Based on the theoretical calculations, these features can be attributed to the presence of point nodes in the superconducting gap along the $a$ direction. Under the field orientation along the easy-magnetization $a$ axis, an unusual temperature dependence of the upper critical field at low fields together with a convex downward curvature in $C(H)$ were observed. These anomalous behaviors can be explained on the basis of a nonunitary triplet state model with equal-spin pairing whose $T_{\rm c}$ is tuned by the magnetization along the $a$ axis. From these results, the gap symmetry of UTe$_2$ is most likely described by a vector order parameter of $d(k)=(b + ic)(k_b + ik_c)$.

One-dimensional moire charge density wave in the hidden order state of URu2Si2 induced by fracture

Moiré patterns can lead to fundamentally new electronic behavior when formed between two atomic lattices slightly shifted with respect to each other. A solid is however not just characterized by the atomic lattice, but also by charge or magnetic excitations that do not need to be commensurate to the lattice. This raises the question if one can obtain a moiré by combining periodic electronic modulations and the atomic lattice. Here we report on the discovery of a one-dimensional charge density wave (1D-CDW) which is a moiré pattern between the atomic lattice and a hot spot for electronic scattering in the bandstructure of the hidden order (HO) state of URu$_2$Si$_2$. The moiré is produced by fracturing the crystal at low temperatures. Our results suggest that charge interactions are among the most relevant features competing with HO in URu$_2$Si$_2$.

Electronic nematicity in URu2Si2 revisited

The nature of the hidden-order (HO) state in URu2Si2 remains one of the major unsolved issues in heavy-fermion physics. Recently, torque magnetometry, x-ray diffraction and elastoresistivity data have suggested that the HO phase transition at THO = 17.5 K is driven by electronic nematic effects. Here, we search for thermodynamic signatures of this purported structural instability using anisotropic thermal-expansion, Youngś modulus, elastoresistivity and specific-heat measurements. In contrast to the published results, we find no evidence of a rotational symmetry-breaking in any of our data. Interestingly, our elastoresistivity measurements, which are in full agreement with published results, exhibit a Curie-Weiss divergence, which we however attribute to a volume and not to a symmetry-breaking effect. Finally, clear evidence for thermal fluctuations is observed in our heat-capacity data, from which we estimate the HO correlation length.

Multiple Superconducting Phases and Unusual Enhancement of the Upper Critical Field in UTe2

We performed AC calorimetry and magnetoresistance measurements under pressure for H || a-axis (easy-magnetization axis) in the novel heavy-fermion superconductor UTe2. Thanks to the thermodynamic information, multiple superconducting phases have been revealed under pressure and magnetic field. The (H,T) phase diagram of superconductivity under pressure displays an abrupt increase of the upper critical field (Hc2) at low temperature and in the high field region, and a strong convex curvature of Hc2 at high temperature. This behavior of Hc2 and the multiple superconducting phases require a state for the superconducting order parameter more complex than a spin-triplet equal spin pairing. Above the superconducting critical pressure, Pc, we find strong indications that the possible magnetic order is closer to antiferromagnetism than to ferromagnetism.

Evidence of Fermi-Surface Reconstruction at the Metamagnetic Transition of the Strongly Correlated Superconductor UTe2

Thermoelectric power ($S$) and Hall effect ($R_\mathrm{H}$) measurements on the paramagnetic superconductor UTe$_2$ with magnetic field applied along the hard magnetization $b$-axis are reported. The first order nature of the metamagnetic transition at $H_\mathrm{m}=H^b_\mathrm{c2}=35$~T leads to drastic consequences on $S$ and $R_\mathrm{H}$. In contrast to the field dependence of the specific heat in the normal state through $H_\mathrm{m}$, $S(H)$ is not symmetric with respect to $H_\mathrm{m}$. This implies a strong interplay between ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations and a Fermi-surface reconstruction at $H_\mathrm{m}$. $R_\mathrm{H}$ is very well described by incoherent skew scattering above the coherence temperature $T_\mathrm{m}$ corresponding roughly to the temperature of the maximum in the susceptibility $T_{χ_\mathrm{max}}$ and coherent skew scattering at lower temperatures. The discontinuous field dependence of both, $S(H)$ and the ordinary Hall coefficient $R_0$, at $H_\mathrm{m}$ and at low temperature, provides evidence of a change in the band structure at the Fermi level.

Anisotropy of the Upper Critical Field in the Heavy-Fermion Superconductor UTe2 under Pressure

We studied the anisotropy of the superconducting upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$ in the heavy-fermion superconductor UTe$_2$ under hydrostatic pressure by magnetoresistivity measurements. In agreement with previous experiments we confirm that superconductivity disappears near a critical pressure $p_{\rm c} \approx 1.5$~GPa, and a magnetically ordered state appears. The unusual $H_{\rm c2}(T)$ at low temperatures for $H \parallel a$ suggests that the multiple superconducting phases which appear under pressure have quite different $H_{\rm c2}$. For a field applied along the hard magnetization $b$ axis $H_{\rm c2} (0)$ is glued to the metamagnetic transition $H_{\rm m}$ which is suppressed near $p_{\rm c}$. The suppression of $H_{\rm m}$ with pressure follows the decrease of temperature $T_χ^{\rm max}$, at the maximum in the susceptibility along $b$. The strong reinforcement of $H_{\rm c2}$ at ambient pressure for $H \parallel b$ above 16~T is rapidly suppressed under pressure due to the increase of $T_{\rm sc}$ and the decrease of $H_{\rm m}$. The change in the hierarchy of the anisotropy of $H_{\rm c2}(0)$ on approaching $p_{\rm c}$ points out that the $c$ axis becomes the hard magnetization axis.

Spin-Triplet Superconductivity in UTe2 and Ferromagnetic Superconductors

The spin-triplet state is most likely realized in uranium ferromagnetic superconductors, UGe2, URhGe, UCoGe. The microscopic coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity means that the Cooper pair should be realized under the strong internal field due the ferromagnetism, leading to the spin-triplet state with equal spin pairing. The field-reinforced superconductivity, which is observed in all three materials when the ferromagnetic fluctuations are enhanced, is one of the strong evidences for the spin-triplet superconductivity. We present here the results of a newly discovered spin-triplet superconductor, UTe2, and compare those with the results of ferromagnetic superconductors. Although no magnetic order is found in UTe2, there are similarities between UTe2 and ferromagnetic superconductors. For example, the huge upper critical field exceeding the Pauli limit and the field-reentrant superconductivity for H || b-axis are observed in UTe2, URhGe and UCoGe. We also show the specific heat results on UTe2 in different quality samples, focusing on the residual density of states in the superconducting phase.

Superconducting Properties of Heavy Fermion UTe$_2$ Revealed by $^{125}$Te-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

We have performed the $^{125}$Te-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurement in the field along the $b$ axis on the newly discovered superconductor UTe$_2$, which is a candidate of a spin-triplet superconductor. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature $1/T_1T$ abruptly decreases below a superconducting (SC) transition temperature $T_c$ without showing a coherence peak, indicative of UTe$_2$ being an unconventional superconductor. It was found that the temperature dependence of $1/T_1T$ in the SC state cannot be understood by a single SC gap behavior but can be explained by a two SC gap model. The Knight shift, proportional to the spin susceptibility, decreases below $T_c$, but the magnitude of the decrease is much smaller than the decrease expected in the spin-singlet pairing. Rather, the small Knight-shift decrease as well as the absence of the Pauli-depairing effect can be interpreted by the spin triplet scenario.

Field-angular Dependence of Pairing Interaction in URhGe: Comparison with UCoGe

The field-angular dependence of Co-NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 has been measured for a 10% Co-doped single crystal of URhGe. The experiment revealed that spin fluctuations in ferromagnetic (FM) state of URhGe are robust against magnetic field below about 4 T, applied along any direction in the bc crystal plane. This is in clear contrast with the sister compound UCoGe, in which FM spin fluctuations are rapidly suppressed by a tiny applied field along the c axis. We show that such a difference in the character of the spin fluctuations is reflected in their two distinct phase diagrams for the upper critical field Hc2, providing further support to the mechanism of superconductivity mediated by spin fluctuations in these materials.

Electronic Structure of UTe$_2$ Studied by Photoelectron Spectroscopy

The electronic structure of the unconventional superconductor UTe$_2$ was studied by resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (RPES) and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) with soft X-ray synchrotron radiation. The partial $\mathrm{U}~5f$ density of states of UTe$_2$ were imaged by the $\mathrm{U}~4d$--$5f$ RPES and it was found that the $\mathrm{U}~5f$ state has an itinerant character, but there exists an incoherent peak due to the strong electron correlation effects. Furthermore, an anomalous admixture of the $\mathrm{U}~5f$ states into the $\mathrm{Te}~5p$ bands was observed at a higher binding energy, which cannot be explained by band structure calculations. On the other hand, the band structure of UTe$_2$ was obtained by ARPES and its overall band structure were mostly explained by band structure calculations. These results suggest that the $\mathrm{U}~5f$ states of UTe$_2$ have itinerant but strongly-correlated nature with enhanced hybridization with the $\mathrm{Te}~5p$ states.

Fermi-Surface Instabilities in the Heavy-Fermion Superconductor UTe2

We present different transport measurements up to fields of 29~T in the recently discovered heavy-fermion superconductor UTe$_{2}$ with magnetic field $H$ applied along the easy magnetization a-axis of the body-centered orthorhombic structure. The thermoelectric power varies linearly with temperature above the superconducting transition, $T_{SC}= 1.5$ K, indicating that superconductivity develops in a Fermi liquid regime. As a function of field the thermolelectric power shows successive anomalies which are attributed to field-induced Fermi surface instabilities. These Fermi-surface instabilities appear at critical values of the magnetic polarization. Remarkably, the lowest magnetic field instability for $H\parallel a$ occurs for the same critical value of the magnetization (0.4 $μ_B$) than the first order metamagnetic transition at 35~T for field applied along the $b$-axis. The estimated number of charge carriers at low temperature reveals a metallic ground state distinct from LDA calculations indicating that strong electronic correlations are a major issue in this compound.

Thermodynamic Investigation of Metamagnetism in Pulsed High Magnetic Fields on Heavy Fermion Superconductor UTe$_2$

We investigated the thermodynamic property of the heavy fermion superconductor UTe$_2$ in pulsed high magnetic fields. The superconducting transition in zero field was observed at $T_{\rm c}$=1.65 K as a sharp heat capacity jump. Magnetocaloric effect measurements in pulsed-magnetic fields obviously detected a thermodynamic anomaly accompanied by a first-order metamagnetic transition at $μ$$_{0}$$H_{\rm m}$=36.0 T when the fields are applied nearly along the hard-magnetization $b$-axis. From the results of heat capacity measurements in magnetic fields, we found a drastic diverging electronic heat capacity coefficient of the normal state $γ$$_{\rm N}$ with approaching $H_{\rm m}$. Comparing with the previous works via the magnetic Clausius-Clapeyron relation, we unveil the thermodynamic details of the metamagnetic transition. The enhancement of the effective mass observed as the development of $γ_{\rm N}$ indicates that quantum fluctuation strongly evolves around $H_{\rm m}$; it assists the superconductivity emerging even in extremely high fields.

125Te-NMR Study on a Single Crystal of Heavy Fermion Superconductor UTe2

We report 125Te-NMR studies on a newly discovered heavy fermion superconductor UTe2. Using a single crystal, we have measured the 125Te-NMR Knight shift K and spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 for fields along the three orthorhombic crystal axes. The data confirm a moderate Ising anisotropy for both the static (K) and dynamical susceptibilities (1/T1) in the paramagnetic state above about 20 K. Around 20 K, however, we have observed a sudden loss of NMR spin-echo signal due to sudden enhancement of the NMR spin-spin relaxation rate 1/T2, when the field is applied along the easy axis of magnetization (=a axis). This behavior suggests the development of longitudinal magnetic fluctuations along the a axis at very low frequencies below 20 K.

Field-reentrant superconductivity close to a metamagnetic transition in the heavy-fermion superconductor UTe$_2$

We present a study of the upper critical field of the newly discovered heavy fermion superconductor UTe$_2$ by magnetoresistivity measurements in pulsed magnetic fields up to 60~T and static magnetic fields up to 35~T. We show that superconductivity survives up to the metamagnetic transition at $H_{\rm m} \approx 35$~T at low temperature. Above $H_{\rm m}$ superconductivity is suppressed. At higher temperature superconductivity is enhanced under magnetic field leading to reentrance of superconductivity or an almost temperature independent increase of $H_{\rm c2}$. By studying the angular dependence of the upper critical field close to the $b$ axis (hard magnetization axis) we show that the maximum of the reentrant superconductivity temperature is depinned from the metamagnetic field. A key ingredient for the field-reinforcement of superconductivity on approaching $H_{\rm m}$ appears to be an immediate interplay with magnetic fluctuations and a possible Fermi-surface reconstruction.

Magnetic-Field-Induced Phenomena in the Paramagnetic Superconductor UTe$_{2}$

We present magnetoresistivity measurements on the heavy-fermion superconductor UTe$_{2}$ in pulsed magnetic fields $μ_0H$ up to 68~T and temperatures $T$ from 1.4 to 80~K. Magnetic fields applied along the three crystallographic directions $\mathbf{a}$ (easy magnetic axis), $\mathbf{b}$, and $\mathbf{c}$ (hard magnetic axes), are found to induce different phenomena - depending on the field direction - beyond the low-field suppression of the superconducting state. For $\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{a}$, a broad anomaly in the resistivity is observed at $μ_0H^*\simeq10$~T and $T = 1.4$~K. For $\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{c}$, no magnetic transition nor crossover are observed. For $\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{b}$, a sharp first-order-like step in the resistivity indicates a metamagnetic transition at the field $μ_0H_m \simeq 35$~T. When the temperature is raised signature of first-order metamagnetism is observed up to a critical endpoint at $T_{CEP}\simeq7$~K. At higher temperatures a crossover persists up to 28~K, i.e., below the temperature $T_χ^{max} = 35$~K where the magnetic susceptibility is maximal. A sharp maximum in the Fermi-liquid quadratic coefficient $A$ of the low-temperature resistivity is found at $H_m$. It indicates an enhanced effective mass associated with critical magnetic fluctuations, possibly coupled with a Fermi surface instability. Similarly to the URhGe case, we show that UTe$_{2}$ is a candidate for field-induced reentrant superconductivity in the proximity of $H_m$.

Metamagnetic Transition in Heavy Fermion Superconductor UTe2

We have studied the magnetization of the recently discovered heavy fermion superconductor UTe$_2$ up to 56 T in pulsed-magnetic fields. A first-order metamagnetic transition has been clearly observed at $H_{\rm m}$ =34.9 T when the magnetic field $H$ is applied along the orthorhombic hard-magnetization $b$-axis. The transition has a critical end point at $\sim$11 K and 34.8 T, where the first order transition terminates and changes into a crossover regime. Using the thermodynamic Maxwell relation, we have evaluated the field dependence of the Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat directly related to the superconducting pairing. From the analysis, we found a significant enhancement of the effective mass centered at $H_{\rm m}$, which is reminiscent of the field-reentrant superconductivity of the ferromagnet URhGe in transverse fields. We discuss the origin of their field-robust superconductivity.

Fermi-Surface Selective Determination of the $\mathbf{g}$-Factor Anisotropy in URu$_2$Si$_2$

The $g$-factor anisotropy of the heavy quasiparticles in the hidden order state of URu$_2$Si$_2$ has been determined from the superconducting upper critical field and microscopically from Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations. We present a detailed analysis of the $g$-factor for the $α$, $β$ and $γ$ Fermi-surface pockets. Our results suggest a strong $g$-factor anisotropy between the $c$ axis and the basal plane for all observed Fermi surface pockets. The observed anisotropy of the $g$-factor from the quantum oscillations is in good agreement with the anisotropy of the superconducting upper critical field at low temperatures, which is strongly limited by the paramagnetic pair breaking along the easy magnetization axis $c$. However, the anisotropy of the initial slope of the upper critical field near $T_c$ cannot be explained by the anisotropy of the effective masses and Fermi velocities derived from quantum oscillations.

Unconventional Superconductivity in Heavy Fermion UTe2

We grew single crystals of the recently discovered heavy fermion superconductor UTe2, and measured the resistivity, specific heat and magnetoresistance. Superconductivity (SC) was clearly detected at Tsc=1.65K as sharp drop of the resistivity in a high quality sample of RRR=35. The specific heat shows a large jump at Tsc indicating strong coupling. The large Sommerfeld coefficient, 117mJ K-2mol-1 extrapolated in the normal state and the temperature dependence of C/T below Tsc are the signature of unconventional SC. The discrepancy in the entropy balance at Tsc between SC and normal states points out that hidden features must occur. Surprisingly, a large residual value of the Sommerfeld coefficient seems quite robust (gamma_0/gamma ~ 0.5). The large upper critical field Hc2 along the three principal axes favors spin-triplet SC. For H // b-axis, our experiments do not reproduce the huge upturn of Hc2 reported previously. This discrepancy may reflect that Hc2 is very sensitive to the sample quality. A new perspective in UTe2 is the proximity of a Kondo semiconducting phase predicted by the LDA band structure calculations.
