QCD Kondo effect for single heavy quark in chiral-symmetry broken phase

We consider the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) Kondo effect for a single heavy quark in quark matter composed of light quarks with chiral symmetry breaking. Introducing several spinor structures in QCD Kondo condensates, i.e., particle-projected condensate, antiparticle-projected condensate, and normal condensate without projection, we calculate the attractive energy gained by the heavy quark within the mean-field approximation in the path-integral formalism. We show that the normal condensate is favored at low density and the particle-projected condensate is favored at high density, when the light quark has a nonzero mass. We interpret such a density-dependent transition between the two condensates in terms of the Kondo resonances.

Thermal effects on sound velocity peak and conformality in isospin QCD

We study thermal effects on equations of state (EOS) in isospin QCD, utilizing a quark-meson model coupled to a Polyakov loop. The quark-meson model is analyzed at one-loop that is the minimal order to include quark substructure constraints on pions which condense at finite isospin density. In the previous study we showed that the quark-meson model at zero temperature produces the sound velocity peak and the negative trace anomaly in the domain between the chiral effective theory regime at low density and the perturbative QCD regime at high density, in reasonable agreement with lattice simulations. We now include thermal effects from quarks in the Polyakov loop background and examine EOS, especially the sound velocity and trace anomaly along isentropic trajectories. At large isospin density, there are three temperature windows; (i) the pion condensed region with almost vanishing Polyakov loops, (ii) the pion condensed region with finite Polyakov loops, and (iii) the quark gas without pion condensates. In the domain (i), the gap associated with the pion condensate strongly quenches thermal excitations. As the system approaches the domain (ii), thermal quarks, which behave as non-relativistic particles, add energy density but little pressure, substantially reducing the sound velocity to the value less than the conformal value while increasing the trace anomaly toward the positive value. Approaching the domain (iii), thermal quarks become more relativistic as pion condensates melt, increasing sound velocity toward the conformal limit. Corrections from thermal pions are also briefly discussed.

Mass spectrum of spin-one hadrons in dense two-color QCD: Novel predictions by extended linear sigma model

We construct an extended version of the linear sigma model in such a way as to describe spin-$1$ hadrons as well as spin-$0$ hadrons in two-color QCD (QC$_2$D) by respecting the Pauli-Gürsey $SU(4)$ symmetry. Within a mean-field approximation, we therefrom examine a mass spectrum of the spin-$1$ hadrons at finite quark chemical potential ($μ_q$) and zero temperature. Not only mean fields of scalar mesons and scalar-diquark baryons but also of vector mesons and vector-diquark baryons are incorporated. As a result, we find that, unless all of those four types of mean fields are taken into account, neither lattice result for the critical $μ_q$ that corresponds to the onset of baryon superfluidity nor for $μ_q$ dependence of the pion mass can be reproduced. We also find that a slight suppression of the $ρ$ meson mass in the superfluid phase, which was suggested by the lattice simulation, is reproduced by subtle mixing effects between spin-$0$ and spin-$1$ hadrons. Moreover, we demonstrate the emergence of an axialvector condensed phase and possibly of a vector condensed phase by identifying the values of $μ_q$ at which the corresponding hadron masses vanish. The possible presence of iso-triplet $1^-$ diquarks that may be denoted by a tensor-type quark bilinear field is also discussed.

Dirac Kondo effect under magnetic catalysis

We develop a mean-field theory of a novel Kondo effect emerging in systems without a Fermi surface, which instead emerges under strong magnetic fields. We determine the magnitude of the Kondo condensate which is a particle pairing composed of conducting Dirac fermions and localized impurities. We focus on the competition between the Kondo effect and the energy gap formation that stems from the pairing among the Dirac fermions leading to the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. We find that this competition induces a quantum critical point. We also investigate finite-temperature effects. This system at vanishing fermion density can be studied with Monte Carlo lattice simulations which do not suffer from the sign problem.

Fate of the topological susceptibility in two-color dense QCD

We explore the topological susceptibility at finite quark chemical potential and zero temperature in two-color QCD (QC$_2$D) with two flavors. Through the Ward-Takahashi identities of QC$_2$D, we find that the topological susceptibility in the vacuum solely depends on three observables: the pion decay constant, the pion mass, and the $η$ mass in the low-energy regime of QC$_2$D. Based on the identities, we numerically evaluate the topological susceptibility at finite quark chemical potential using the linear sigma model with the approximate Pauli-Gursey $SU(4)$ symmetry. Our findings indicate that, in the absence of $U(1)_A$ anomaly effects represented by the Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t Hooft-type determinant interaction, the topological susceptibility vanishes in both the hadronic and baryon superfluid phases. On the other hand, when the $U(1)_A$ anomaly effects are present, the constant and nonzero topological susceptibility is induced in the hadronic phase, reflecting the mass difference between the pion and $η$ meson. Meanwhile, in the superfluid phase it begins to decrease smoothly. The asymptotic behavior of the decrement is fitted by the continuous reduction of the chiral condensate in dense QC$_2$D, which is similar to the behavior observed in hot three-color QCD matter. In addition, effects from the finite diquark source on the topological susceptibility are discussed. We expect that the present study provides a clue to shed light on the role of the $U(1)_A$ anomaly in cold and dense QCD matter.

Axial anomaly effect on three-quark and five-quark singly heavy baryons

Effects of the $U(1)_A$ axial anomaly on the mass spectrum of singly heavy baryons (SHBs) is studied in terms of the chiral effective theory based on the chiral linear representation for light flavors. We consider SHBs made of both three quarks ($Qqq$) and five quarks ($Qqqq\bar{q}$). For the three-quark SHBs we prove that the inverse mass hierarchy for the negative-parity $Λ_c$ and $Ξ_c$ is realized only when the $U(1)_A$ anomaly is present. For the five-quark SHBs, in contrast, it is found that the $U(1)_A$ anomaly does not change the mass spectrum at the leading order, and accordingly their decay properties induced by emitting a pseudoscalar meson are not affected by the anomaly. Moreover, taking into account small mixings between the three-quark and five-quark SHBs, we find that the observed $Ξ_c$ excited state, either $Ξ_c(2923)$ or $Ξ_c(2930)$, can be consistently regarded as a negative-parity SHB that is dominated by the five-quark component. We also predict a new negative-parity five-quark dominant $Λ_c$, whose mass is around $2700$ MeV and the decay width is of order a few MeV, which provides useful information for future experiments to check our description.

Axial anomaly effect to the chiral-partner structure of diquarks at high temperature

Masses of positive-parity and negative-parity diquarks are investigated at finite temperature with a quark chemical potential. We employ the three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, in order to delineate chiral properties of the diquarks, in particular, the mass degeneracy of chiral partners under extreme conditions. We focus on the effects of $U(1)_A$ axial anomaly on manifestation of the chiral-partner structures. We find that, in the absence of anomaly effects to the diquarks, the mass degeneracies in all $[ud]$, $[su]$ and $[sd]$ diquark sectors take place prominently above the pseudocritical temperature of the chiral restoration. On the other hand, the anomaly effects are found to hinder the $[ud]$ diquark from exhibiting the mass degeneracy, accompanied by a slow reduction of the $\bar{s}s$ condensate, while the $[su]$ and $[sd]$ diquarks are not much affected. Our present investigation will provide useful information on the chiral-partner structure with the anomaly effects of diquarks for heavy-ion collision experiments of singly heavy baryons and doubly heavy tetraquarks, and for future lattice simulations of the diquarks.

Strong decays of singly heavy baryons from a chiral effective theory of diquarks

A chiral effective theory of scalar and vector diquarks is formulated, which is based on $SU(3)_R\times SU(3)_L$ chiral symmetry and includes interactions between scalar and vector diquarks with one or two mesons. We find that the diquark interaction term with two mesons breaks the $U(1)_A$ and flavor $SU(3)$ symmetries. To determine the coupling constants of the interaction Lagrangians, we investigate one-pion emission decays of singly heavy baryons $Qqq$ ($Q=c, b$ and $q=u,d,s$), where baryons are regarded as diquark--heavy-quark two-body systems. Using this model, we present predictions of the unobserved decay widths of singly heavy baryons. We also study the change of masses and strong decay widths of singly heavy baryons under partial restoration of chiral symmetry.

Probing the hadron mass spectrum in dense two-color QCD with the linear sigma model

We investigate modifications of hadron masses at finite quark chemical potential in two-flavor and two-color QCD, of which the data are available from lattice simulations, within a linear sigma model based on approximate Pauli-Gursey $SU(4)$ symmetry. The model describes not only ground-state scalar diquarks and pseudo-scalar mesons but also the excited pseudo-scalar diquarks and scalar mesons; each ground-state diquark (meson) has the corresponding excited diquark (hadron) with opposite parity as a chiral partner. Effects of chiral symmetry breaking and diquark condensates are incorporated by a mean-field treatment. We show that various mixings among the hadrons, which are triggered by the breakdown of baryon number conservation in the superfluid phase, lead to a rich hadron mass spectrum. We discuss the influence of $U(1)_A$ anomaly on the density dependence of the mass spectrum and also manifestations of the chiral partner structures as density increases in the superfluid phase. The predicted hadron masses are expected to provide future lattice simulations with useful information on such symmetry properties in dense two-color QCD.

Measurement of hadron masses in 2-color finite density QCD

We investigate hadron spectra in 2-color QCD using lattice simulation with $N_{f}=2$ at low temperature and finite density in which there appears not only the hadronic phase but also the superfluid phase. We first calculate the pion and rho meson spectrum, which is well-known from previous works. The spectral ordering of these mesons flips around the quark chemical potential $μ=m^{0}_π/2$ ($m^{0}_π$: the pion mass at $μ=0$), where the phase transition between the hadronic and superfluid phases occurs. For $μ\gtrsim m^{0}_π/2$, the effective mass for the pion linearly increases while the one for the rho meson monotonically decreases. Furthermore, we measure hadron spectra with the isospin $I=0$ and the angular momentum $J^{P}=0^{\pm}$. The effective masses for the meson, diquark, and antidiquark with the same quantum number become degenerate just below $μ= m^{0}_π/2$, and the three hadrons have the same mass in the superfluid phase. It suggests that mixing occurs between spectra associating with mesons and baryons due to the $U(1)_{B}$ symmetry breaking. This phenomenon can be explained in the linear sigma model with the approximate $SU(4)$ Pauli-Gursey symmetry.

Effective model for pure Yang-Mills theory on $\mathbb{T}^2\times \mathbb{R}^2$ with Polyakov loops

We investigate the phase diagram and thermodynamics of $SU(N)$ pure Yang-Mills theory on a manifold $\mathbb{T}^2\times \mathbb{R}^2$ with an effective model that includes two Polyakov loops along two compactified directions. We find that a rich phase structure can appear owing to the spontaneous breaking of two center symmetries for $N=2$ and $3$. Thermodynamic quantities are obtained in the model and compared with recent lattice results. It is shown that two Polyakov loops play significant roles in thermodynamics on $\mathbb{T}^2\times \mathbb{R}^2$.

Meson resonance gas in a relativistic quark model: scalar vs vector confinement and semishort range correlations

Smooth transitions from hadronic matter to hot and dense matter of quantum chromodynamics accompany continuous transformations in effective degrees of freedom. The microscopic descriptions should include relativistic quarks interacting inside of hadrons. In this work we construct a schematic constituent quark model with relativistic kinematics which captures the global trends of meson spectra in the light, strange, and charm quark sectors. We examine the roles of the scalar- and vector-confining potentials as well as semishort range correlations in estimating the strength of central, spin-spin, and spin-orbit interactions. The quark dynamics in low-lying mesons is very sensitive to relativistic kinematics and short range interactions, while in high-lying mesons are sensitive to the composition of scalar- and vector-confinement. After expressing mesons in terms of quark wave functions, we use them to describe the quark occupation probability in a meson resonance gas, and discuss how it can be related to its counterpart in a quark-gluon-plasma.

Decays of Roper-like singly heavy baryons in a chiral model

We present a chiral model describing decays of the Roper-like $Λ_c(2765)$ and $Ξ_c(2970)$ as well as those of the heavy quark spin-doublet $\{Σ_c(2455),Σ_c(2520)\}$ and $\{Ξ_c',Ξ_c(2645)\}$, by focusing on chiral representations of diquarks inside the heavy baryons. Based on our chiral model together with the heavy quark spin symmetry, we derive a relation satisfied by axial charges of the heavy baryons that controls magnitude of their one pion (kaon) decays. Besides, it is shown that the large decay widths of the Roper-like $Λ_c(2765)$ and $Ξ_c(2970)$, which cannot be implemented by conventional non-relativistic quark models, are explained by reasonable values of the axial charges. In addition, we apply the chiral model to bottom baryons and predict decay widths of the undiscovered Roper-like $Ξ_b$. We expect that our present investigation leads to elucidation of dynamical properties of the excited heavy baryons from the viewpoint of chiral symmetry.

Heavy-quark spin polarization induced by the Kondo effect in a magnetic field

We propose a new mechanism of the heavy-quark spin polarization (HQSP) in quark matter induced by the Kondo effect under external magnetic field. The Kondo effect is caused by a condensate between a heavy and a light quark called the Kondo condensate leading to a mixing of the heavy and light quark spins. Thus the HQSP is driven through the Kondo effect from light quarks coupling with the magnetic field in quark matter. For demonstration, we employ the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type model under a magnetic field, and investigate the HQSP within the linear response theory with vertex corrections required by the $U(1)_{\rm EM}$ electromagnetic gauge invariance. As a result, we find that the HQSP arises significantly with the appearance of the Kondo effect. Our findings are testable in future sign-problem-free lattice simulations.

Peaks of sound velocity in two color dense QCD: quark saturation effects and semishort range correlations

We discuss stiffening of dense matter in two color QCD (QC$_2$D) where hadrons are mesons and diquark baryons. We study two models which describe a transition of matter from the Bose-Einstein-Condensation regime at low density to the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer regime at high density. The first model is based on coherent states of diquarks, and the second is the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with diquark pairing terms. We particularly focus on how quark states are occupied as baryon density increases. We find that, due to the occupied quark levels, the ideal gas picture of diquarks breaks down at density significantly less than the density where baryon cores overlap. The saturation of quark states at low momenta stiffens equations of state. We also study the effects of interactions which depend on the quark occupation probability. We argue that equations of state become very stiff when the bulk part of the quark Fermi sea has the effective repulsion but the Fermi surface enjoys the attractive correlations. This disparity for different momentum domains is possible due to the strong channel dependence in gluon exchanges with momentum transfer of $0.2-1$ GeV. These concepts can be transferred from QC$_2$D to QCD in any numbers of colors.

Strong decays of multi-strangeness baryon resonances in the quark model

Decay properties of multi-strangeness $Ξ$ and $Ω$ baryon resonances are investigated within the constituent quark model by including relativistic corrections. The strong decay widths of various $Ξ$ and $Ω$ resonances are computed and tested for internal quark configurations to pin down their spin-parity ($J^P$) quantum numbers and internal structures. We found that the Roper-like resonances in the multi-strangeness sector have large decay widths bearing resemblances to their siblings in light and heavy baryon sectors. In addition, we obtained the decay ratio for the $Ω(2012)$ as $Γ{(Ω\to Ξ\bar{K} π)} / Γ{(Ω\to Ξ\bar{K})}=4.5\%$, which is consistent with the experimental data when $J^P=3/2^-$ is assigned. This observation holds the possibility that the $Ω(2012)$ could naturally be explained as a three-quark state in the quark model. The decays of other low-lying $Ξ$ and $Ω$ resonances are systematically analyzed, which would be useful to unveil the structure of these resonances in future experiments.

Delineating chiral separation effect in two-color dense QCD

We study the chiral separation effect (CSE) in two-color and two-flavor QCD (QC$_2$D) to delineate quasiparticle pictures in dense matter from low to high temperatures. Both massless and massive quarks are discussed. We particularly focus on the high density domain where diquarks form a color singlet condensate with the electric charge $1/3$. The condensate breaks baryon number and $U(1)_A$ axial symmetry, and induces the electromagnetic Meissner effects. Within a quark quasiparticle picture, we compute the chiral separation conductivity at one-loop. We have checked that Nambu-Goldstone modes, which should appear in the improved vertices as required by the Ward-Takahashi identities, do not contribute to the chiral separation conductivity due to their longitudinal natures. In the static limit, the destructive interferences in the particle-hole channel, as in usual Meissner effects, suppress the conductivity (in chiral limit, to $1/3$ of the normal phase's). This locally breaks the universality of the CSE coefficients, provided quasiparticle pictures are valid in the bulk matter.

Novel pentaquark picture for singly heavy baryons from chiral symmetry

We propose a new type of structure for singly heavy baryons of $Qqq\bar{q}q$ in addition to the conventional one of $Qqq$. Based on chiral symmetry of the light quarks, we show that the $Qqq\bar{q}q$ baryon offers a novel picture for heavy quark spin-singlet and flavor-antisymmetric baryons. By making use of the effective Lagrangian approach, we find $Λ_c(2765)$ and $Ξ_c(2967)$ are mostly $Qqq\bar{q}q$ while $Λ_c(2286)$ and $Ξ_c(2470)$ are mostly $Qqq$. The masses of negative-parity baryons are predicted. We also derive a sum rule and the extended Goldberger-Treiman relation that the masses of the baryons satisfy. Furthermore, a mass degeneracy of parity partners of the baryons with the restoration of chiral symmetry is discussed. These are the unique features that the conventional picture of radial excitation in the quark model does not accommodate. Our findings provide useful information not only for future experiments but also for future lattice simulations on diquarks.
