Binary phase oscillation of two mutually coupled semiconductor lasers

A two-site Ising model is implemented as an injection-locked laser network consisting of a single master laser and two mutually coupled slave lasers. We observed ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders in the in-phase and out-of-phase couplings between the two slave lasers. Their phase difference is locked to either 0 or p even if the coupling path is continuously modulated. The system automatically selects the oscillation frequency to satisfy the in-phase or out-of-phase coupling condition, when the mutual coupling dominates over the injection-locking by the master laser.

Frequency ratio measurement of 171Yb and 87Sr optical lattice clocks

The frequency ratio of the 1S0(F=1/2)-3P0(F=1/2) clock transition in 171Yb and the 1S0(F=9/2)-3P0(F=9/2) clock transition in 87Sr is measured by an optical-optical direct frequency link between two optical lattice clocks. We determined the ratio (ν_{Yb}/ν_{Sr}) to be 1.207 507 039 343 340 4(18) with a fractional uncertainty of 1.5x10^{-15}. The measurement uncertainty of the frequency ratio is smaller than that obtained from absolute frequency measurements using the International Atomic Time (TAI) link. The measured ratio agrees well with that derived from the absolute frequency measurement results obtained at NIST and JILA, Boulder, CO using their Cs-fountain clock. Our measurement enables the first international comparison of the frequency ratios of optical clocks, and we obtained a good agreement between the two measured ratios with an uncertainty smaller than the TAI link. The measured frequency ratio will be reported to the International Committee for Weights and Measures for a discussion related to the redefinition of the second.

Spectroscopy and frequency measurement of the $^{87}$Sr clock transition by laser linewidth transfer using an optical frequency comb

We perform spectroscopic observations of the 698-nm clock transition in $^{87}$Sr confined in an optical lattice using a laser linewidth transfer technique. A narrow-linewidth laser interrogating the clock transition is prepared by transferring the linewidth of a master laser (1064 nm) to that of a slave laser (698 nm) with a high-speed controllable fiber-based frequency comb. The Fourier-limited spectrum is observed for an 80-ms interrogating pulse. We determine that the absolute frequency of the 5s$^{2}$ $^{1}$S$_{0}$ - 5s5p $^{3}$P$_{0}$ clock transition in $^{87}$Sr is 429 228 004 229 872.0 (1.6) Hz referenced to the SI second.

Rayleigh-Taylor instability and mushroom-pattern formation in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

The Rayleigh-Taylor instability at the interface in an immiscible two-component Bose-Einstein condensate is investigated using the mean-field and Bogoliubov theories. Rayleigh-Taylor fingers are found to grow from the interface and mushroom patterns are formed. Quantized vortex rings and vortex lines are then generated around the mushrooms. The Rayleigh-Taylor instability and mushroom-pattern formation can be observed in a trapped system.

Quantum memory of a squeezed vacuum for arbitrary frequency sidebands

We have developed a quantum memory technique that is completely compatible with current quantum information processing for continuous variables of light, where arbitrary frequency sidebands of a squeezed vacuum can be stored and retrieved using bichromatic electromagnetic induced transparency. 2MHz sidebands of squeezed vacuum pulses with temporal widths of 470ns and a squeezing level of -1.78 +- 0.02dB were stored for 3us in the laser-cooled 87Rb atoms. -0.44 +- 0.02dB of squeezing was retrieved, which is the highest squeezing ever reported for a retrieved pulse.

Storage and Retrieval of a Squeezed Vacuum

Storage and retrieval of a squeezed vacuum was successfully demonstrated using electromagnetically induced transparency. 930ns of the squeezed vacuum pulse was incident on the laser cooled 87Rb atoms with an intense control light in a coherent state. When the squeezed vacuum pulse was slowed and spatially compressed in the cold atoms, the control light was switched off. After 3us of storage, the control light was switched on again and the squeezed vacuum was retrieved, as was confirmed using the time-domain homodyne method.

Ultraslow Propagation of Squeezed Vacuum Pulses with Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

We have succeeded in observing ultraslow propagation of squeezed vacuum pulses with electromagnetically induced transparency. Squeezed vacuum pulses (probe lights) were incident on a laser cooled 87Rb gas together with an intense coherent light (control light). A homodyne method sensitive to the vacuum state was employed for detecting the probe pulse passing through the gas. A delay of 3.1us was observed for the probe pulse having a temporal width of 10 us.

Generation of a squeezed vacuum resonant on Rubidium D_1 line with periodically-poled KTiOPO_4

We report generation of a continuous-wave squeezed vacuum resonant on the Rb D_1 line (795 nm) using periodically poled KTiOPO_4 (PPKTP) crystals. With a frequency doubler and an optical parametric oscillator based on PPKTP crystals, we observed a squeezing level of -2.75 +- 0.14 dB and an anti-squeezing level of +7.00 +- 0.13 dB. This system could be utilized for demonstrating storage and retrieval of the squeezed vacuum, which is important for the ultra-precise measurement of atomic spins as well as quantum information processing.
