Axion Cloud Decay due to the Axion-photon Conversion with Background Magnetic Fields

We consider an axion cloud around a black hole with background magnetic fields. We calculate the decay rate of the axion cloud due to the axion-photon conversion associated with the axion-photon coupling. For simplicity, we consider the situation where the axion configuration is dominated by a solution for the eigenvalue equation equivalent to that for the Hydrogen atom, and the coupling term can be evaluated by a successive perturbation method. For the monopole background, we find the decay rate of the axion cloud is given by $\sim q^2κ^2(GM)^5μ^8$, where $μ$, $M$, $G$, $κ$ and $q$ are the axion mass, black hole mass, gravitational constant, coupling constant of the axion-photon coupling and monopole charge, respectively. For the uniform background magnetic field, we obtain the decay rate of the axion cloud $\sim B_0^2κ^2 (GM)^7μ^6$, where $B_0$ is the magnetic field strength. Applying our formula to the central black hole in our galaxy, we find that the value of the decay rate for the case of the uniform magnetic field is comparable to the growth rate of the superradiant instability with $κ\sim 10^{-12}{\rm GeV^{-1}}$, $B_0\sim 10^3{\rm G}$ and $μ\sim 10^{-18}{\rm eV}$. The ratio is $10^5$ times larger for the monopole magnetic field with the same values of the parameters.

Gaia 400,894 QSO constraint on the energy density of low-frequency gravitational waves

Low frequency gravitational waves (GWs) are keys to understanding cosmological inflation and super massive blackhole (SMBH) formation via blackhole mergers, while it is difficult to identify the low frequency GWs with ground-based GW experiments such as the advanced LIGO (aLIGO) and VIRGO due to the seismic noise. Although quasi-stellar object (QSO) proper motions produced by the low frequency GWs are measured by pioneering studies of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations with good positional accuracy, the low frequency GWs are not strongly constrained by the small statistics with 711 QSOs (Darling et al. 2018). Here we present the proper motion field map of 400,894 QSOs of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with optical {\it Gaia} EDR3 proper motion measurements whose positional accuracy is $< 0.4$ milli-arcsec comparable with the one of the radio VLBI observations. We obtain the best-fit spherical harmonics with the typical field strength of $\mathcal{O}(0.1)\, μ$arcsec, and place a tight constraint on the energy density of GWs, $Ω_{\rm gw}=(0.964 \pm 3.804) \times 10^{-4}$ (95 \% confidence level), that is significantly stronger than the one of the previous VLBI study by two orders of magnitude at the low frequency regime of $f <10^{-9}\,{\rm [Hz]}\simeq (30\,{\rm yr})^{-1}$ unexplored by the pulsar timing technique. Our upper limit rules out the existence of SMBH binary systems at the distance $r < 400$ kpc from the Earth where the Milky Way center and local group galaxies are included. Demonstrating the limit given by our optical QSO study, we claim that astrometric satellite data including the forthcoming {\it Gaia} DR5 data with small systematic errors are powerful to constrain low frequency GWs.

On Lorentz-invariant bi-spin-2 theories

We investigate a Lorentz invariant action which is quadratic in two rank-2 symmetric tensor fields in Minkowski spacetime. We apply a scalar-vector-tensor decomposition to two tensor fields by virtue of 3-dimensional rotation-invariance of Minkowski spacetime and classify theories with seven degrees of freedom based on the Hamiltonian analysis. We find two new theories, which cannot be mapped from the linearized Hassan-Rosen bigravity. In these theories, the new mass interactions can be allowed thanks to the transverse diffeomorphism invariance of action.

UV sensitive one-loop matter power spectrum in degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor theories

We study matter density perturbations up to third order and the one-loop matter power spectrum in degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories beyond Horndeski. We systematically solve gravitational field equations and fluid equations order by order, and find three novel shape functions characterizing the third-order solution in DHOST theories. A complete form of the one-loop matter power spectrum is then obtained using the resultant second- and third-order solutions. We confirm the previous result that the convergence condition of the loop integrals in the infrared limit becomes more stringent than that of the standard one in general relativity. We show that also in the ultraviolet limit the convergence condition becomes more stringent and the one-loop matter power spectrum is thus sensitive to the short-wavelength behavior of the linear power spectrum.

Testing gravity theories with cosmic microwave background in the degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor theory

We study the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in the framework of the degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theory to test gravity theories. This theoretical framework includes the wide class of dark energy models such as the Horndeski theory and its extensions as certain limits, and the general relativity can be also recovered. In this study, to test gravity theories with CMB, we formulate the linear perturbations of gravity and matter in the theory and their effective description parameterised by time-dependent effective field theory (EFT) parameters, $α_i$ $(i=B,K,T,M,H,L)$ and $β_i$ $(i=1,2,3)$. Based on the resultant DHOST framework, we develop a numerical code to solve Boltzmann equations consistently. We then show that the angular power spectra of the CMB temperature anisotropies, E-mode and lensing potential as a demonstration and find that the parameter characterising the DHOST theory, $β_1$, provides the larger modifications of the spectra, compared with other EFT parameters. We also show the results in the case of a specific model in which the cosmic expansion as well as the EFT parameters are consistently determined.

Redshift space distortions in the presence of non-minimally coupled dark matter

In this paper, we fully investigate cosmological scenarios in which dark matter is non-minimally coupled to an extra scalar degree of freedom. The interaction is realized by means of conformal and disformal terms in the transformed gravitational metric. Considering linear perturbation theory, we show that the growth rate of dark matter differs from the uncoupled case and that the well-known Kaiser formula undergoes modification. As a result, redshift space distortion measurements cease to be a direct probe of the linear growth rate of total matter, since the distortion factor has an extra, coupling-dependent term. We study the effect of the coupling in three cosmological models, two conformally and one disformally coupled, and forecast the constraints on the coupling, and other cosmological parameters, from future galaxy surveys.

CMB Constraints on the Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background at Mpc scales

We present robust constraints on the stochastic gravitational waves (GWs) at Mpc scales from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. CMB constraints on GWs are usually characterized as the tensor-to-scalar ratio, assuming specifically a power-law form of the primordial spectrum, and are obtained from the angular spectra of CMB. Here, we relax the assumption of the power-law form, and consider to what extent one can constrain a monochromatic GW at shorter wavelengths. Previously, such a constraint has been derived at the wavelengths larger than the resolution scale of the CMB measurements, typically above $100$Mpc (below $10^{-16}$Hz in frequency). However, GWs whose wavelength is much shorter than $100$Mpc can imprint a small but non-negligible signal on CMB anisotropies at observed angular scales, $\ell<1000$. Here, using the CMB temperature, polarization, and lensing data set, we obtain the best constraints to date at $10^{-16}-10^{-14}$Hz of the GWs produced before the time of decoupling, which are tighter than those derived from the astrometric measurements and upper bounds on extra radiations. In the future, the constraints on GWs at Mpc scales will be further improved by several orders of magnitude with the precision $B$-mode measurement on large scales, $\ell<100$.

Large-scale inhomogeneity of dark energy produced in the ancestor vacuum

We investigate large-scale inhomogeneity of dark energy in the bubble nucleation scenario of the universe. In this scenario, the present universe was created by a bubble nucleation due to quantum tunneling from a metastable ancestor vacuum, followed by a primordial inflationary era. During the bubble nucleation, supercurvature modes of some kind of a scalar field are produced, and remain until present without decaying; thus they can play a role of the dark energy, if the mass of the scalar field is sufficiently light in the present universe. The supercurvature modes fluctuate at a very large spatial scale, much longer than the Hubble length in the present universe. Thus they create large-scale inhomogeneities of the dark energy, and generate large-scale anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuations. This is a notable feature of this scenario, where quantum fluctuations of a scalar field are responsible for the dark energy. In this paper, we calculate imprints of the scenario on the CMB anisotropies through the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, and give observational constraints on the curvature parameter $Ω_K$ and on an additional parameter $ε$ describing some properties of the ancestor vacuum.

On Lorentz-invariant spin-2 theories

We construct Lorentz-invariant massless/massive spin-2 theories in flat spacetime. Starting from the most generic action of a rank-2 symmetric tensor field whose Lagrangian contains up to quadratic in first derivatives of a field, we investigate the possibility of new theories by using the Hamiltonian analysis. By imposing the degeneracy of the kinetic matrix and the existence of subsequent constraints, we classify theories based on the number of degrees of freedom and constraint structures and obtain a wider class of Fierz-Pauli theory as well as massless and partially massless theories, whose scalar and/or vector degrees of freedom are absent. We also discuss the relation between our theories and known massless and massive spin-2 theories.

On the screening mechanism in DHOST theories evading gravitational wave constraints

We consider a subclass of degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories in which gravitational waves propagate at the speed of light and do not decay into scalar fluctuations. The screening mechanism in DHOST theories evading these two gravitational wave constraints operates very differently from that in generic DHOST theories. We derive a spherically symmetric solution in the presence of nonrelativistic matter. General relativity is recovered in the vacuum exterior region provided that functions in the Lagrangian satisfy a certain condition, implying that fine-tuning is required. Gravity in the matter interior exhibits novel features: although the gravitational potentials still obey the standard inverse power law, the effective gravitational constant is different from its exterior value, and the two metric potentials do not coincide. We discuss possible observational constraints on this subclass of DHOST theories, and argue that the tightest bound comes from the Hulse-Taylor pulsar.

Constraining DHOST theories with linear growth of matter density fluctuations

We investigate the potential of cosmological observations, such as galaxy surveys, for constraining degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories, focusing in particular on the linear growth of the matter density fluctuations. We develop a formalism to describe the evolution of the matter density fluctuations during the matter dominated era and in the early stage of the dark energy dominated era in DHOST theories, and give an approximate expression for the gravitational growth index in terms of several parameters characterizing the theory and the background solution under consideration. By employing the current observational constraints on the growth index, we obtain a new constraint on a parameter space of DHOST theories. Combining our result with other constraints obtained from the Newtonian stellar structure, we show that the degeneracy between the effective parameters of DHOST theories can be broken without using the Hulse-Taylor pulsar constraint.

Cosmology with Phase 1 of the Square Kilometre Array; Red Book 2018: Technical specifications and performance forecasts

We present a detailed overview of the cosmological surveys that will be carried out with Phase 1 of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA1), and the science that they will enable. We highlight three main surveys: a medium-deep continuum weak lensing and low-redshift spectroscopic HI galaxy survey over 5,000 sqdeg; a wide and deep continuum galaxy and HI intensity mapping survey over 20,000 sqdeg from z = 0.35 - 3; and a deep, high-redshift HI intensity mapping survey over 100 sqdeg from z = 3 - 6. Taken together, these surveys will achieve an array of important scientific goals: measuring the equation of state of dark energy out to z ~ 3 with percent-level precision measurements of the cosmic expansion rate; constraining possible deviations from General Relativity on cosmological scales by measuring the growth rate of structure through multiple independent methods; mapping the structure of the Universe on the largest accessible scales, thus constraining fundamental properties such as isotropy, homogeneity, and non-Gaussianity; and measuring the HI density and bias out to z = 6. These surveys will also provide highly complementary clustering and weak lensing measurements that have independent systematic uncertainties to those of optical surveys like LSST and Euclid, leading to a multitude of synergies that can improve constraints significantly beyond what optical or radio surveys can achieve on their own. This document, the 2018 Red Book, provides reference technical specifications, cosmological parameter forecasts, and an overview of relevant systematic effects for the three key surveys, and will be regularly updated by the Cosmology Science Working Group in the run up to start of operations and the Key Science Programme of SKA1.

Scalar-tensor theories and modified gravity in the wake of GW170817

Theories of dark energy and modified gravity can be strongly constrained by astrophysical or cosmological observations, as illustrated by the recent observation of the gravitational wave event GW170817 and of its electromagnetic counterpart GRB 170817A, which shows that the speed of gravitational waves, $c_g$, is the same as the speed of light, within deviations of order $10^{-15}$. This observation implies very severe restrictions on scalar-tensor theories, in particular theories whose action depends on second derivatives of a scalar field. Working in the very general framework of Degenerate Higher-Order Scalar-Tensor (DHOST) theories, which encompass Horndeski and Beyond Horndeski theories, we present the DHOST theories that satisfy $c_g=c$. We then examine, for these theories, the screening mechanism that suppresses scalar interactions on small scales, namely the Vainshtein mechanism, and compute the corresponding gravitational laws for a non-relativistic spherical body. We show that it can lead to a deviation from standard gravity inside matter, parametrized by three coefficients which satisfy a consistency relation and can be constrained by present and future astrophysical observations.

Observational signatures of dark energy produced in an ancestor vacuum: Forecast for galaxy surveys

We study observational consequences of the model for dark energy proposed in [1] (Aoki et al., Phys.Rev. D97 (2018) no.4, 043517). We assume our universe has been created by bubble nucleation, and consider quantum fluctuations of an ultralight scalar field. Residual effects of fluctuations generated in an ancestor vacuum (de Sitter space in which the bubble was formed) is interpreted as dark energy. Its equation of state parameter w(z) has a characteristic form, approaching -1 in the future, but -1/3 in the past. A novel feature of our model is that dark energy effectively increases the magnitude of the negative spatial curvature in the evolution of the Hubble parameter, though it does not alter the definition of the angular diameter distance. We perform Fisher analysis and forecast the constraints for our model from future galaxy surveys by Square Kilometre Array and Euclid. Due to degeneracy between dark energy and the spatial curvature, galaxy surveys alone can determine these parameters only for optimistic choices of their values, but combination with other independent observations, such as CMB, will greatly improve the chance of determining them.

Y-junction intercommutations of current carrying strings

Under certain conditions the collision and intercommutation of two cosmic strings can result in the formation of a third string, with the three strings then remaining connected at Y-junctions. The kinematics and dynamics of collisions of this type have been the subject of analytical and numerical analyses in the special case in which the strings are Nambu-Goto. Cosmic strings, however, may well carry currents, in which case their dynamics is not given by the Nambu-Goto action. Our aim is to extend the kinematic analysis to more general kinds of string model. We focus in particular on the collision of strings described by conservative elastic string models, characteristic of current carrying strings, and which are expected to form in a cosmological context. As opposed to Nambu-Goto strings collisions, we show that in this case the collision cannot lead to the formation of a third elastic string: if dynamically such a string forms then the joining string must be described by a more general equation of state. This process will be studied numerically in a forthcoming publication.

Are redshift-space distortions actually a probe of growth of structure?

We present an impact of coupling between dark matter and a scalar field, which might be responsible for dark energy, on measurements of redshift-space distortions. We point out that, in the presence of conformal and/or disformal coupling, linearized continuity and Euler equations for total matter fluid significantly deviate from the standard ones even in the sub-horizon scales. In such a case, a peculiar velocity of total matter field is determined not only by a logarithmic time derivative of its density perturbation but also by density perturbations for both dark matter and baryon, leading to a large modification of the physical interpretation of observed data obtained by measurements of redshift-space distortions. We reformulate galaxy two-point correlation function in the redshift space based on the modified continuity and Euler equations. We conclude from the resultant formula that the true value of the linear growth rate of large-scale structure cannot be necessarily constrained by single-redshift measurements of the redshift-space distortions, unless one observes the actual time-evolution of structure.

Multitracer technique for galaxy bispectrum - An application to constraints on non-local primordial non-Gaussianities -

We explore the use of galaxy bispectra with multitracer technique as a possible probe of primordial non-Gaussianities. We forecast future constraints on non-linearity parameters, $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm eq}$ and $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm orth}$, which respectively characterize the equilateral- and orthogonal-types primordial bispectra, and show that the multitracer analysis would be effective with reducing the cosmic-variance noise if the number density of galaxies is high enough. We find that the measurement of galaxy bispectrum by future galaxy surveys can reach the constraints on the non-local type primordial non-Gaussianities to the level severer than current one which has been obtained by cosmic microwave background observations.

Constraining modified theory of gravity with galaxy bispectrum

We explore the use of galaxy bispectrum induced by the nonlinear gravitational evolution as a possible probe to test general scalar-tensor theories with second-order equations of motion. We find that time dependence of the leading second-order kernel is approximately characterized by one parameter, the second-order index, which is expected to trace the higher-order growth history of the Universe. We show that our new parameter can significantly carry new information about the non-linear growth of structure. We forecast future constraints on the second-order index as well as the equation-of-state parameter and the growth index.
