Multiplexed quantum repeaters based on single-photon interference with mild stabilization

Quantum repeaters are pivotal in the physical layer of the quantum internet. For its development, quantum repeaters capable of efficient entanglement distribution are necessary. Quantum repeater schemes based on single-photon interference are promising due to their potential efficiency. However, schemes involving first-order interference with photon sources at distant nodes require stringent phase stability in the components, which poses challenges for long-distance implementation. In this paper, we present a quantum repeater scheme that leverages single-photon interference with reduced difficulty of phase stabilization. Additionally, under specific conditions, we demonstrate that our scheme achieves a higher entanglement distribution rate between end nodes compared to existing schemes. This approach, implementable using only feasible technologies including multimode quantum memories and two-photon sources, offers high entanglement distribution rates and mild phase stabilization, leading to the development of multimode quantum repeaters.

Space-division multiplexed phase compensation for quantum communication: concept and field demonstration

Phase-sensitive quantum communication has received considerable attention to overcome the distance limitation of quantum communication. A fundamental problem in phase-sensitive quantum communication is to compensate for phase drift in an optical fiber channel. A combination of time-, wavelength-, and space-division multiplexing can improve the phase stability of the optical fiber. However, the existing phase compensations have used only time- and wavelength-division multiplexing. Here, we demonstrate space-division multiplexed phase compensation in the Osaka metropolitan networks. Our compensation scheme uses two neighboring fibers, one for quantum communication and the other for sensing and compensating the phase drift. Our field investigations confirm the correlation of the phase drift patterns between the two neighboring fibers. Thanks to the correlation, our space-division multiplexed phase compensation significantly reduces the phase drift and improves the quantum bit error rate. Our phase compensation is scalable to a large number of fibers and can be implemented with simple instruments. Our study on space-multiplex phase compensation will support the field deployment of phase-sensitive quantum communication.

Entropy Bound and a Geometrically Nonsingular Universe

Bousso's entropy bound is a conjecture that the entropy through a null hypersurface emanating from a two-dimensional surface with a nonpositive expansion is bounded by the area of that two-dimensional surface. We investigate the validity of Bousso's entropy bound in the spatially flat, homogeneous, and isotropic universe with an adiabatic entropy current. We find that the bound is satisfied in the entire spacetime in which a cutoff time is introduced based on the entropy density and the energy density. Compared to the previously used prescription which puts a cutoff near the curvature singularity, our criterion for introducing the cutoff is applicable even to a nonsingular universe. Our analysis provides an interpretation of the incompleteness implied by the recently proposed singularity theorem based on the entropy bounds.

Frequency-multiplexed Hong-Ou-Mandel interference

The implementation of quantum repeaters needed for long-distance quantum communication requires the generation of quantum entanglement distributed among the elementary links. These entanglements must be swapped among the quantum repeaters through Bell-state measurements. This study aims to improve the entanglement generation rate by frequency multiplexing the Bell-state measurements. As a preliminary step of the frequency-multiplexed Bell-state measurements, three frequency modes are mapped to a temporal mode by an atomic frequency comb prepared in $\mathrm{Pr^{3+}}$ ion-doped $\mathrm{Y_2SiO_5}$ crystals using a weak coherent state, and Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, which is a measure of the indistinguishability of two inputs, is observed in each frequency mode by coincidence detection. The visibility for all the modes was 40%-42% (theoretically up to 50%). Furthermore, we show that a mixture of different modes is avoided. The present results are connected to frequency-selective Bell-state measurements and therefore frequency-multiplexed quantum repeaters.

Frequency-multiplexed storage and distribution of narrowband telecom photon pairs over a 10-km fiber link with long-term system stability

The ability to transmit quantum states over long distances is a fundamental requirement of the quantum internet and is reliant upon quantum repeaters. Quantum repeaters involve entangled photon sources that emit and deliver photonic entangled states at high rates and quantum memories that can temporarily store quantum states. Improvement of the entanglement distribution rate is essential for quantum repeaters, and multiplexing is expected to be a breakthrough. However, limited studies exist on multiplexed photon sources and their coupling with a multiplexed quantum memory. Here, we demonstrate the storing of a frequency-multiplexed two-photon source at telecommunication wavelengths in a quantum memory accepting visible wavelengths via wavelength conversion after 10-km distribution. To achieve this, quantum systems are connected via wavelength conversion with a frequency stabilization system and a noise reduction system. The developed system was stably operated for more than 42 h. Therefore, it can be applied to quantum repeater systems comprising various physical systems requiring long-term system stability.

Implications of the singularity theorem for the size of a nonsingular universe

A general property of universes without initial singularity is investigated based on the singularity theorem, assuming the null convergence condition and the global hyperbolicity. As a direct consequence of the singularity theorem, the universal covering of a Cauchy surface of a nonsingular universe with a past trapped surface must have the topology of $S^3$. In addition, we find that the affine size of a nonsingular universe, defined through the affine length of null geodesics, is bounded above. In the case where a part of the nonsingular spacetime is described by Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetime, we find that this upper bound can be understood as the affine size of the corresponding closed de Sitter universe. We also evaluate the upper bound of the affine size of our Universe based on the trapped surface confirmed by recent observations of baryon acoustic oscillations, assuming that our Universe has no initial singularity.

Distance determination of molecular clouds in the 1st quadrant of the Galactic plane using deep learning : I. Method and Results

Machine learning has been successfully applied in varied field but whether it is a viable tool for determining the distance to molecular clouds in the Galaxy is an open question. In the Galaxy, the kinematic distance is commonly employed as the distance to a molecular cloud. However, there is a problem in that for the inner Galaxy, two different solutions, the ``Near'' solution, and the ``Far'' solution, can be derived simultaneously. We attempted to construct a two-class (``Near'' or ``Far'') inference model using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), a form of deep learning that can capture spatial features generally. In this study, we used the CO dataset toward the 1st quadrant of the Galactic plane obtained with the Nobeyama 45-m radio telescope (l = 62-10 degree, |b| < 1 degree). In the model, we applied the three-dimensional distribution (position-position-velocity) of the 12CO (J=1-0) emissions as the main input. The dataset with ``Near'' or ``Far'' annotation was made from the HII region catalog of the infrared astronomy satellite WISE to train the model. As a result, we could construct a CNN model with a 76% accuracy rate on the training dataset. By using the model, we determined the distance to molecular clouds identified by the CLUMPFIND algorithm. We found that the mass of the molecular clouds with a distance of < 8.15 kpc identified in the 12CO data follows a power-law distribution with an index of about -2.3 in the mass range of M >10^3 Msun. Also, the detailed molecular gas distribution of the Galaxy as seen from the Galactic North pole was determined.

Single-shot high-resolution identification of discrete frequency modes of single-photon-level optical pulses

Frequency-multiplexed quantum communication usually requires a single-shot identification of the frequency mode of a single photon . In this paper, we propose a scheme that can identify the frequency mode with high-resolution even for spontaneously emitted photons whose generation time is unknown, by combining the time-to-space and frequency-to-time mode mapping. We also demonstrate the mapping of the frequency mode (100 MHz intervals) to the temporal mode (435 ns intervals) for weak coherent pulses using atomic frequency combs. This frequency interval is close to the minimum frequency mode interval of the atomic frequency comb quantum memory with Pr3+ ion-doped Y2SiO5 crystal, and the proposed scheme has the potential to maximize the frequency multiplexing of the quantum repeater scheme with the memory.

Quasinormal modes of charged black holes with corrections from nonlinear electrodynamics

We study quasinormal modes related to gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations of spherically symmetric charged black holes in nonlinear electrodynamics. Beyond the linear Maxwell electrodynamics, we consider a class of Lagrangian with higher-order corrections written by the electromagnetic field strength and its Hodge dual with arbitrary coefficients, and we parametrize the corrections for quasinormal frequencies in terms of the coefficients. It is confirmed that the isospectrality of quasinormal modes under parity is generally violated due to nonlinear electrodynamics. As applications, the corrections for quasinormal frequencies in Euler-Heisenberg and Born-Infeld electrodynamics are calculated, then it is clarified that the nonlinear effects act to lengthen the oscillation period and enhance the damping rate of the quasinormal modes.

Coupling of a quantum memory and telecommunication wavelength photons for high-rate entanglement distribution in quantum repeaters

Quantum repeaters are indispensable tools for long-distance quantum communication. However, frequency matching between entangled photon sources and remote quantum memories (QMs) is difficult, which is an obstacle to the implementation of quantum repeaters. In this paper, we demonstrate a method to achieve the coupling of a Pr:YSO as a fixed-time QM with a single telecommunication-wavelength photon through frequency stabilization using an optical frequency comb over all applied laser wavelengths. The demonstrated method can lead to the implementation of a quantum repeater scheme enabling an improvement of the entanglement generation rate, paving the way for long-distance quantum communication.

String Excitation by Initial Singularity of Inflation

We discuss excitation of string oscillation modes by an initial singularity of inflation. The initial singularity of inflation is known to occur with a finite Hubble parameter, which is generally lower than the string scale, and hence it is not clear that stringy effects become significant around it. With the help of Penrose limit, we find that infinitely heavy oscillation modes get excited when a singularity is strong in the sense of Krolak's classification. We demonstrate that the initial singularities of Starobinsky and hill top inflation, assuming the slow roll inflation to the past infinity, are strong. Hence stringy corrections are inevitable in the very early stage of these inflation models. We also find that the initial singularity of the hill top inflation could be weak for non-slow roll case.

Past extendibility and initial singularity in Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker and Bianchi I spacetimes

We study past-directed extendibility of Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) and Bianchi type I spacetimes with a scale factor vanishing in the past. We give criteria for determining whether a boundary for past-directed incomplete geodesics is a parallelly propagated curvature singularity, which cannot necessarily be read off from scalar curvature invariants. It is clarified that, for incomplete FLRW spacetime to avoid the singularity, the spacetime necessarily reduces to the Milne universe or flat de Sitter universe toward the boundary. For incomplete Bianchi type I spacetime to be free of singularity, it is necessary that the spacetime asymptotically fits into the product of the extendible isotropic geometry (Milne or flat de Sitter) and flat space, or, anisotropic spacetime with specific power law scale factors. Furthermore, we investigate in detail the time-dependence of the scale factor compatible with the extendibility in both spacetimes beyond the leading order.

Entanglement distribution between quantum repeater nodes with an absorptive type memory

Quantum repeaters, which are indispensable for long-distance quantum communication, are necessary for extending the entanglement from short distance to long distance; however, high-rate entanglement distribution, even between adjacent repeater nodes, has not been realized. In a recent work by C. Jones, et al., New J. Phys. 18, 083015 (2016), the entanglement distribution rate between adjacent repeater nodes was calculated for a plurality of quantum dots, nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, and trapped ions adopted as quantum memories inside the repeater nodes. Considering practical use, arranging a plurality of quantum memories becomes so difficult with the state-of-the art technology. It is desirable that high-rate entanglement distribution is realized with as few memory crystals as possible. Here we propose new entanglement distribution scheme with one quantum memory based on the atomic frequency comb which enables temporal multimode operation with one crystal. The adopted absorptive type quantum memory degrades the difficulty of multimode operation compared with previously investigated quantum memories directly generating spin-photon entanglement. It is shown that the present scheme improves the distribution rate by nearly two orders of magnitude compared with the result in C. Jones, et al., New J. Phys. 18, 083015 (2016) and the experimental implementation is close by utilizing state-of-the-art technology.

$O(d,d;\mathbb{Z})$ invariant Fierz-Pauli massive gravity

We consider an $O(d,d;\mathbb{Z})$ invariant massive deformation of double field theory at the level of free theory. We study Kaluza-Klein reduction on $R^{1,n-1} \times T^{d}$ and derive the diagonalized second order action for each helicity mode. Imposing the absence of ghosts and tachyons, we obtain a class of consistency conditions which include the well known weak constraint in double field theory as a special case. Consequently, we find two-parameter sets of $O(d,d;\mathbb{Z})$ invariant Fierz-Pauli massive gravity theories.

Two-photon comb with wavelength conversion and 20-km distribution for quantum communication

Quantum computing and quantum communication, have been greatly developed in recent years and expected to contribute to quantum internet technologies, including cloud quantum computing and unconditionally secure communication. However, long-distance quantum communication is challenging mainly because of optical fiber losses; quantum repeaters are indispensable for fiber-based transmission because unknown quantum states cannot be amplified with certainty. In this study, we demonstrate a versatile entanglement source in the telecom band for fiber-based quantum internet, which has a narrow linewidth of sub-MHz range, entanglement fidelity of more than 95%, and Bell-state generation even with frequency multimode. Furthermore, after a total distribution length of 20-km in fiber, two-photon correlation is observed with an easily identifiable normalized correlation coefficient, despite the limited bandwidth of the wavelength converter. The presented implementation promises an efficient method for entanglement distribution that is compatible with quantum memory and frequency-multiplexed long-distance quantum communication applications.

Theories with limited extrinsic curvature and a nonsingular anisotropic universe

We propose a class of theories that can limit scalars constructed from the extrinsic curvature. Applied to cosmology, this framework allows us to control not only the Hubble parameter but also anisotropies without the problem of Ostrogradsky ghost, which is in sharp contrast to the case of limiting spacetime curvature scalars. Our theory can be viewed as a generalization of mimetic and cuscuton theories (thus clarifying their relation), which are known to possess a structure that limits only the Hubble parameter on homogeneous and isotropic backgrounds. As an application of our framework, we construct a model where both anisotropies and the Hubble parameter are kept finite at any stage in the evolution of the universe in the diagonal Bianchi type I setup. The universe starts from a constant-anisotropy phase and recovers Einstein gravity at low energies. We also show that the cosmological solution is stable against a wide class of perturbation wavenumbers, though instabilities may remain for arbitrary initial conditions.

Stability of magnetic black holes in general nonlinear electrodynamics

We study the perturbative stability of magnetic black holes in a general class of nonlinear electrodynamics, where the Lagrangian is given by a general function of the field strength of electromagnetic field $F_{μν}$ and its Hodge dual $\widetilde{F}_{μν}$. We derive sufficient conditions for the stability of the black holes. We apply the stability conditions to Bardeen's regular black holes, black holes in Euler-Heisenberg theory, and black holes in Born-Infeld theory. As a result, we obtain a sufficient condition for the stability of Bardeen's black holes, which restricts $F_{μν}\widetilde{F}^{μν}$ dependence of the Lagrangian. We also show that black holes in Euler-Heisenberg theory are stable for a sufficiently small magnetic charge. Moreover, we prove the stability of black holes in the Born-Infeld electrodynamics even when including $F_{μν}\widetilde{F}^{μν}$ dependence.

Cuscuton gravity as a classically stable limiting curvature theory

Finding effective theories of modified gravity that can resolve cosmological singularities and avoid other physical pathologies such as ghost and gradient instabilities has turned out to be a rather difficult task. The concept of limiting curvature, where one bounds a finite number of curvature-invariant functions thanks to constraint equations, is a promising avenue in that direction, but its implementation has only led to mixed results. Cuscuton gravity, which can be defined as a special subclass of $k$-essence theory for instance, is a minimal modification of gravity since it does not introduce any new degrees of freedom on a cosmological background. Importantly, it naturally incorporates the idea of limiting curvature. Accordingly, models of cuscuton gravity are shown to possess non-singular cosmological solutions and those appear stable at first sight. Yet, various subtleties arise in the perturbations such as apparent divergences, e.g., when the Hubble parameter crosses zero. We revisit the cosmological perturbations in various gauges and demonstrate that the stability results are robust even at those crossing points, although certain gauges are better suited to analyze the perturbations. In particular, the spatially-flat gauge is found to be ill defined when $H=0$. Otherwise, the sound speed is confirmed to be generally close to unity in the ultraviolet, and curvature perturbations are shown to remain essentially constant in the infrared throughout a bounce phase. Perturbations for a model of extended cuscuton (as a subclass of Horndeski theory) are also studied and similar conclusions are recovered.
