Ghost-free resummation of gravitational interactions of a 2-form gauge field

We find that the recently-proposed ghost-free interaction of a 2-form gauge field in four dimensions, which contains derivative couplings in a nonperturbative manner, can be regarded as a resummation of ghostly interaction terms. We investigate the higher derivative structure of this model in a minisuperspace description and demonstrate that the higher derivative terms can be removed by taking appropriate combinations of the Euler-Lagrange equations, while a truncation at a finite order spoils this structure. We also show that this nature is peculiar to four dimensions.

Birth of de Sitter Universe from time crystal

We show that a simple sub-class of Horndeski theory can describe a time crystal Universe. The time crystal Universe can be regarded as a baby Universe nucleated from a flat space, which is mediated by an extension of Giddings-Strominger instanton in a 2-form theory dual to the Horndeski theory. Remarkably, when a cosmological constant is included, de Sitter Universe can be created by tunneling from the time crystal Universe. It gives rise to a past completion of an inflationary Universe.

2-form gauge theory dual to scalar-tensor theory

We generalize the electromagnetic duality between a massless, canonical scalar field and a 2-form gauge field in 4-dimensional spacetime to scalar-tensor theories. We derive the action of 2-form gauge field that is dual to two kinds of scalar-tensor theories: shift symmetric K-essence theory and the shift symmetric Horndeski theory up to quadratic in scalar field. The former case, the dual 2-form has a nonlinear kinetic term. The latter case, the dual 2-form has non-trivial interactions with gravity through Einstein tensor. In both case, the duality relation is modified from usual case, that is, the dual 2-form field is not simply given by the Hodge dual of the gradient of the scalar field.

Gravitational scalar-tensor theory

We consider a new form of theories of gravity in which the action is written in terms of the Ricci scalar and its first and second derivatives. Despite the higher derivative nature of the action, the theory is free from ghost under an appropriate choice of the functional form of the Lagrangian. This model possesses $2+2$ physical degrees of freedom, namely $2$ scalar degrees and $2$ tensor degrees. We exhaust all such theories with the Lagrangian of the form $f(R, (\nabla R)^2, \Box R)$, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar, and then show some examples beyond this ansatz. In course of analysis, we prove the equivalence between these examples and generalized bi-Galileon theories.

Higher derivative scalar-tensor theory through a non-dynamical scalar field

We propose a new class of higher derivative scalar-tensor theories without the Ostrogradsky's ghost instabilities. The construction of our theory is originally motivated by a scalar field with spacelike gradient, which enables us to fix a gauge in which the scalar field appears to be non-dynamical. We dub such a gauge as the spatial gauge. Though the scalar field loses its dynamics, the spatial gauge fixing breaks the time diffeomorphism invariance and thus excites a scalar mode in the gravity sector. We generalize this idea and construct a general class of scalar-tensor theories through a non-dynamical scalar field, which preserves only spatial covariance. We perform a Hamiltonian analysis and confirm that there are at most three (two tensors and one scalar) dynamical degrees of freedom, which ensures the absence of a degree of freedom due to higher derivatives. Our construction opens a new branch of scalar-tensor theories with higher derivatives.

Global Spacetime Structure of Compactified Inflationary Universe

We investigate the global spacetime structure of torus de Sitter universe, which is exact de Sitter space with torus identification based on the flat chart. We show that past incomplete null geodesics in torus de Sitter universe are locally extendible. Then we give an extension of torus de Sitter universe so that at least one of the past incomplete null geodesics in the original spacetime becomes complete. However we find that extended torus de Sitter universe has two ill behaviors. The first one is a closed causal curve. The second one is so called quasi regular singularity, which means that there is no global, consistent extension of spacetime where all curves become complete, nevertheless each curve is locally extensible.

Maximal extensions and singularities in inflationary spacetimes

Extendibility of inflationary spacetimes with flat spatial geometry is investigated. We find that the past boundary of an inflationary spacetime becomes a so-called parallely propagated curvature singularity if the ratio $\dot{H}/a^2$ diverges at the boundary, where $\dot{H}$ and $a$ represent the time derivative of the Hubble parameter and the scale factor, respectively. On the other hand, if the ratio $\dot{H}/a^2$ converges, then the past boundary is regular and continuously extendible. We also develop a method to judge the continuous ($C^0$)extendibility of spacetime in the case of slow-roll inflation driven by a canonical scalar field. As applications of this method, we find that Starobinsky inflation has a $C^0$ parallely propagated curvature singularity, but a small field inflation model with a Higgs-like potential does not. We also find that an inflationary solution in a modified gravity theory with limited curvature invariants is free of such a singularity and is smoothly extendible.

Stable cosmological solutions in degenerate theory of gravity

We study cosmological applications of extended vector-tensor theories, whose Lagrangians contain up to two derivatives with respect to metric and vector field. We derive background equations under the assumption of homogeneous and isotropic universe and study the nature of cosmological perturbations on top of the background. We found an example of healthy cosmological solutions in non-trivial degenerate theory of gravity for the first time, where those perturbations do not suffer from any instabilities, that is, ghost and gradient instabilities.

Pole inflation in Jordan frame supergravity

We investigate inflation models in Jordan frame supergravity, in which an inflaton non-minimally couples to the scalar curvature. By imposing the condition that an inflaton would have the canonical kinetic term in the Jordan frame, we construct inflation models with asymptotically flat potential through pole inflation technique and discuss their relation to the models based on Einstein frame supergravity. We also show that the model proposed by Ferrara et al. has special position and the relation between the Kähler potential and the frame function is uniquely determined by requiring that scalars take the canonical kinetic terms in the Jordan frame and that a frame function consists only of a holomorphic term (and its anti-holomorphic counterpart) for symmetry breaking terms. Our case corresponds to relaxing the latter condition.

Singularities in Spherically Symmetric Solutions with Limited Curvature Invariants

We investigate static, spherically symmetric solutions in gravitational theories which have limited curvature invariants, aiming to remove the singularity in the Schwarzschild space-time. We find that if we only limit the Gauss-Bonnet term and the Ricci scalar, then the singularity at the origin persists. Moreover we find that the event horizon can develop a curvature singularity. We also investigate a new class of theories in which all components of the Riemann tensor are bounded. We find that the divergence of the quadratic curvature invariants at the event horizon is avoidable in this theory. However, other kinds of singularities due to the dynamics of additional degrees of freedom cannot be removed, and the space-time remains singular.

Cosmological perturbations and stability of nonsingular cosmologies with limiting curvature

We revisit nonsingular cosmologies in which the limiting curvature hypothesis is realized. We study the cosmological perturbations of the theory and determine the general criteria for stability. For the simplest model, we find generic Ostrogradski instabilities unless the action contains the Weyl tensor squared with the appropriate coefficient. When considering two specific nonsingular cosmological scenarios(one inflationary and one genesis model), we find ghost and gradient instabilities throughout most of the cosmic evolution. Furthermore, we show that the theory is equivalent to a theory of gravity where the action is a general function of the Ricci and Gauss-Bonnet scalars, and this type of theory is known to suffer from instabilities in anisotropic backgrounds. This leads us to construct a new type of curvature invariant scalar function. We show that it does not have Ostrogradski instabilities, and it avoids ghost and gradient instabilities for most of the interesting background inflationary and genesis trajectories. We further show that it does not possess additional new degrees of freedom in an anisotropic spacetime. This opens the door for studying stable alternative nonsingular very early universe cosmologies.

Extended vector-tensor theories

Recently, several extensions of massive vector theory in curved space-time have been proposed in many literatures. In this paper, we consider the most general vector-tensor theories that contain up to two derivatives with respect to metric and vector field. By imposing a degeneracy condition of the Lagrangian in the context of ADM decomposition of space-time to eliminate an unwanted mode, we construct a new class of massive vector theories where five degrees of freedom can propagate, corresponding to three for massive vector modes and two for massless tensor modes. We find that the generalized Proca and the beyond generalized Proca theories up to the quartic Lagrangian, which should be included in this formulation, are degenerate theories even in curved space-time. Finally, introducing new metric and vector field transformations, we investigate the properties of thus obtained theories under such transformations.

Note on Covariant Stückelberg Formalism and Absence of Boulware-Deser Ghost in Bi-gravity

The covariant Stückelberg formalism is applied to bi-gravity in order to revisit the issue of absence of the Boulware-Deser (BD) ghost. We first confirm that the leading order action in the decoupling limit for helicity-2 modes of metrics and helicity-0 mode of Stückelberg perturbations does not lead to higher time derivative in equations of motion, which suggests the absence of the BD ghost. By extending this method, we reconfirm that the BD ghost does not appear for arbitrary order of the perturbations at the decoupling limit in bi-gravity.

Perturbations of Cosmological and Black Hole Solutions in Massive gravity and Bi-gravity

We investigate perturbations of a class of spherically symmetric solutions in massive gravity and bi-gravity. The background equations of motion for the particular class of solutions we are interested in reduce to a set of the Einstein equations with a cosmological constant. Thus, the solutions in this class include all the spherically symmetric solutions in general relativity, such as the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker solution and the Schwarzschild (-de Sitter) solution, though the one-parameter family of two parameters of the theory admits such a class of solutions. We find that the equations of motion for the perturbations of this class of solutions also reduce to the perturbed Einstein equations at first and second order. Therefore, the stability of the solutions coincides with that of the corresponding solutions in general relativity. In particular, these solutions do not suffer from non-linear instabilities which often appear in the other cosmological solutions in massive gravity and bi-gravity.

Coupling between Galileon and massive gravity with composite metrics

We investigate the coupling between a Galileon scalar field and massive gravity through composite metrics. We derive the full set of equations of motion for a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background, and study linear perturbations around it. Generally, the nonminimal coupling with the composite metric will excite all 6 degrees of freedom of the spatial metric perturbations, one of which may correspond to the Boulware-Deser ghost.

Covariant Stückelberg analysis of de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley massive gravity with a general fiducial metric

The Stückelberg analysis of nonlinear massive gravity in the presence of a general fiducial metric is investigated. We develop a "covariant" formalism for the Stückelberg expansion by working with a local inertial frame, through which helicity modes can be characterized correctly. Within this covariant approach, an extended $Λ_3$ decoupling limit analysis can be consistently performed, which keeps $\bar{R}_{μνρσ}/m^2$ fixed with $\bar{R}_{μνρσ}$ the Riemann tensor of the fiducial metric. In this extended decoupling limit, the scalar mode $π$ acquires self-interactions due to the presence of the curvature of the fiducial metric. However, the equation of motion for $π$ remains of second order in derivatives, which extends the understanding of the absence of the Boulware Deser ghost in the case of a flat fiducial metric.

New Cosmological Solutions in Massive Gravity

We find new, simple cosmological solutions with flat, open, and closed spatial geometries, contrary to the previous wisdom that only the open model is allowed. The metric and the Stückelberg fields are given explicitly, showing nontrivial configurations of the Stückelberg in the usual Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker coordinates. The solutions exhibit self-acceleration, while being free from ghost instabilities. Our solutions can accommodate inhomogeneous dust collapse represented by the Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi metric as well. Thus, our results can be used not only to describe homogeneous and isotropic cosmology but also to study gravitational collapse in massive gravity.
