Observation of Multiphoton-induced Fluorescence from Nano Graphene Oxide and Its Applications in In vitro and In vivo Bioimaging

In the present paper, we observed both two-photon and three-photon induced distinct photoluminescence from GO nanoparticles under fs laser excitation. Conjugated with PEG molecules, GO nanoparticles exhibited high chemical stability, and could effectively label HeLa cells. Imaged with a two-photon scanning microscope, GO nanoparticles were observed to localize in the mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi and lysosome of HeLa cells. Furthermore, GO nanoparticles were micro-injected into the brain of a black mouse, and in vivo two-photon luminescence imaging illustrated that GO nanoparticles located at 300 μm depth in the brain could be clearly distinguished.

Comfort-constrained distributed heat pump management

This paper introduces the design of a demand response network control strategy aimed at thermostatically controlled electric heating and cooling systems in buildings. The method relies on the use of programmable communicating thermostats, which are able to provide important component-level state variables to a system-level central controller. This information can be used to build power density distribution functions for the aggregate heat pump load. These functions lay out the fundamental basis for the methodology by allowing for consideration of customer-level constraints within the system-level decision making process. The proposed strategy is then implemented in a computational model to simulate a distribution of buildings, where the aggregate heat pump load is managed to provide the regulation services needed to successfully integrate wind power generators. Increased exploitation of wind resources will place similarly themed ancillary services in high-demand, traditionally provided by dispatchable energy resources that are ill-suited for the frequent power gradients that accompany wind power generation.

Two novel approaches for photometric redshift estimation based on SDSS and 2MASS databases

We investigate two training-set methods: support vector machines (SVMs) and Kernel Regression (KR) for photometric redshift estimation with the data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 and Two Micron All Sky Survey databases. We probe the performances of SVMs and KR for different input patterns. Our experiments show that the more parameters considered, the accuracy doesn't always increase, and only when appropriate parameters chosen, the accuracy can improve. Moreover for different approaches, the best input pattern is different. With different parameters as input, the optimal bandwidth is dissimilar for KR. The rms errors of photometric redshifts based on SVM and KR methods are less than 0.03 and 0.02, respectively. Finally the strengths and weaknesses of the two approaches are summarized. Compared to other methods of estimating photometric redshifts, they show their superiorities, especially KR, in terms of accuracy.
