Strange Luttinger liquids in a cavity-embedded one-dimensional electronic chain

We study a one-dimensional electronic chain coupled to a homogeneous quantized vacuum field and electron-electron interactions. In the absence of the latter, we derive a low-energy effective description in the presence of light-matter coupling, which we identify as a strange Luttinger liquid. Although it retains a formal resemblance to conventional Luttinger liquid theory, the coupling to the quantum field qualitatively modifies the low-energy sector and breaks the standard velocity relation underlying Luttinger universality. For finite electron-electron interactions, we recover a phase diagram featuring several phases as a function of interaction strength and hopping amplitude, including a phase hosting Majorana-like zero modes. Using exact diagonalization, we compute observables that characterize the phase boundaries and show that the cavity field significantly shifts them. We also study the fate of Majorana-like states under the influence of the cavity field, highlighting their modification by light-matter coupling. Finally, we investigate whether the strange Luttinger liquid description identified in the noninteracting regime continues to hold when electron-electron interactions are introduced.

Electron conductance and many-body marker of a cavity-embedded topological 1D chain

We investigate many-body topological and transport properties of a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) topological chain coupled to the quantum field of a cavity mode. The quantum conductance is determined via Green's function formalism in terms of the light-matter eigenstates calculated via exact diagonalization for a finite number of electrons. We show that the topology of the cavity-embedded many-electron system is described by a generalized electron-photon Zak marker. We reveal how the quantization of transport is modified by the cavity vacuum fields for a finite-size chain and how it is impacted by electronic disorder. Moreover, we show that electron-photon entanglement produces dramatic differences with respect to the predictions of mean-field theory, which strongly underestimates cavity-modified transport.

Electron-photon Chern number in cavity-embedded 2D moiré materials

We explore theoretically how the topological properties of 2D materials can be manipulated by cavity quantum electromagnetic fields for both resonant and off-resonant electron-photon coupling, with a focus on van der Waals moiré superlattices. We investigate an electron-photon topological Chern number for the cavity-dressed energy minibands that is well defined for any degree of hybridization of the electron and photon states. While an off-resonant cavity mode can renormalize electronic topological phases that exist without cavity coupling, we show that when the cavity mode is resonant to electronic miniband transitions, new and higher electron-photon Chern numbers can emerge.

Remote gate control of topological transitions in moiré superlattices via cavity vacuum fields

Placed in cavity resonators with three-dimensionally confined electromagnetic wave, the interaction between quasiparticles in solids can be induced by exchanging virtual cavity photons, which can have a non-local characteristic. Here we investigate the possibility of utilizing this nonlocality to realize the remote control of the topological transition in mesoscopic moiré superlattices at full filling (one electron/hole per supercell) embedded in a split-ring terahertz electromagnetic resonator. We show that gate tuning one moiré superlattice can remotely drive a topological band inversion in another moiré superlattice not in contact but embedded in the same cavity. Our study of remote on/off switching of a topological transition provides a novel paradigm for the control of material properties via cavity vacuum fields.
