Spectral sirens cosmology from binary black holes populations with sharper mass features

Spectral-sirens inference enables the extraction of cosmological parameters from gravitational-wave data alone, without electromagnetic counterparts or galaxy catalogs. We introduce new parametric mass functions for the binary black hole population built as linear combination of truncated power-laws that capture significant structure across the mass spectrum. On analysing the latest gravitational-wave transient catalog, GWTC-4.0, we show that power-laws-only population models constrain the Hubble constant to $H_0 = 53.3^{+14.0}_{-10.8} ~\rm km \,s^{-1} \,Mpc^{-1}$ at $68\%$ confidence level. After probing the robustness of the results with respect to several modelling assumptions, we further test alternative cosmological models, establishing competitive constraints on modified gravitational-wave propagation, while bounds on the dark energy equation-of-state parameters remain uninformative. Projecting to the future O5 observing run with larger datasets at higher redshifts, we forecast substantial improvements in $H_0$ and modified propagation parameters. Our results highlight the strong interplay between the black hole mass distribution and inferred cosmology.

Gravitational waves from super-Hubble bubbles

We consider a cosmological first-order phase transition in which bubbles of true vacuum nucleate during inflation but do not collide and percolate until the Universe has entered the radiation-dominated era. If the collisions take place soon after the end of inflation, the size of these bubbles can be significantly greater than the Hubble length. This has two important consequences for the gravitational waves produced by the bubble collisions: First, as the peak frequency is determined by the comoving bubble radius, it can be well below the MHz frequencies typical for bubble collisions at the end of inflation. Second, when comparing collisions beginning at the same time, the amplitude of the gravitational waves is greatly enhanced relative to Hubble-sized and smaller bubbles. Together, these two effects mean that gravitational waves produced by super-Hubble bubbles soon after the end of inflation can be within the observable frequency and amplitude ranges of LIGO and NANOGrav, as well as LISA and other future gravitational wave experiments. We demonstrate this with a simple illustrative model.

Science of the LISA mission: A Summary for the European Strategy for Particle Physics

The LISA mission is an international collaboration between ESA, its member states, and NASA, for the detection of gravitational waves from space. It was adopted in January 2024 and is scheduled for launch in the mid-2030's. It will be a constellation of three identical spacecraft forming a near-equilateral triangle in an heliocentric orbit, transferring laser beams over $2.5 \cdot 10^6$ km long arms. Laser interferometry is used to track separations between test masses, thus measuring spacetime strain variations as a function of time. LISA Science Objectives tackle many open questions in astrophysics, fundamental physics and cosmology, including ESA's Cosmic Vision questions "What are the fundamental laws of the universe?" and "How did the universe originate and of what is it made?". In this contribution, based on the LISA Red Book, we present a summary of the LISA Science Objectives relevant for the European Strategy for Particle Physics.

Beyond $Λ$CDM: Problems, solutions, and the road ahead

Despite its continued observational successes, there is a persistent (and growing) interest in extending cosmology beyond the standard model, $Λ$CDM. This is motivated by a range of apparently serious theoretical issues, involving such questions as the cosmological constant problem, the particle nature of dark matter, the validity of general relativity on large scales, the existence of anomalies in the CMB and on small scales, and the predictivity and testability of the inflationary paradigm. In this paper, we summarize the current status of $Λ$CDM as a physical theory, and review investigations into possible alternatives along a number of different lines, with a particular focus on highlighting the most promising directions. While the fundamental problems are proving reluctant to yield, the study of alternative cosmologies has led to considerable progress, with much more to come if hopes about forthcoming high-precision observations and new theoretical ideas are fulfilled.

Gauge invariant cosmological perturbation theory for braneworlds

We derive the gauge invariant perturbation equations for a 5-dimensional bulk spacetime in the presence of a brane. The equations are derived in full generality, without specifying a particular energy content of the bulk or the brane. We do not assume Z_2 symmetry, and show that the degree of freedom associated with brane motion plays a crucial role. Our formalism may also be used in the Z_2 symmetric case where it simplifies considerably.
