Bessel-Weighted Asymmetries in Semi Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

The concept of weighted asymmetries is revisited for semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. We consider the cross section in Fourier space, conjugate to the outgoing hadron's transverse momentum, where convolutions of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions become simple products. Individual asymmetric terms in the cross section can be projected out by means of a generalized set of weights involving Bessel functions. Advantages of employing these Bessel weights are that they suppress (divergent) contributions from high transverse momentum and that soft factors cancel in (Bessel-) weighted asymmetries. Also, the resulting compact expressions immediately connect to previous work on evolution equations for transverse momentum dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions and to quantities accessible in lattice QCD. Bessel weighted asymmetries are thus model independent observables that augment the description and our understanding of correlations of spin and momentum in nucleon structure.

Accessing the distribution of linearly polarized gluons in unpolarized hadrons

Gluons inside unpolarized hadrons can be linearly polarized provided they have a nonzero transverse momentum. The simplest and theoretically safest way to probe this distribution of linearly polarized gluons is through cos(2 phi) asymmetries in heavy quark pair or dijet production in electron-hadron collisions. Future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) or Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) experiments are ideally suited for this purpose. Here we estimate the maximum asymmetries for EIC kinematics.

On a possible node in the Sivers and Qiu-Sterman functions

The possibility of a node in the x dependence of the Sivers and Qiu-Sterman functions is discussed in light of its importance for the experimental check of the overall sign change of the Sivers effect between semi-inclusive DIS and the Drell-Yan process. An x-dependent version of the Ehrnsperger-Schaefer-Greiner-Mankiewicz relation between the Qiu-Sterman function and a twist-3 part of g_2 is presented, which naturally suggests a node in the Qiu-Sterman function. This relation could be checked experimentally as well and could provide qualitative information on the gluonic field strength inside the proton. Satisfying the Burkardt sum rule by means of a node is briefly discussed and the importance of modelling the Sivers function including its full Wilson line is pointed out.

Impact of double TMD effects on transversity measurements at RHIC

A quantitative estimate is presented for the double transverse spin asymmetries at measured q_T in both the Drell-Yan process and W-boson production due to Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) effects. These spin asymmetries are calculated as a function of the lepton azimuthal angle as measured in the laboratory frame. In this frame, in contrast to the Collins-Soper frame, the TMD effects contribute to the spin asymmetry A_{TT}(q_T) in the same way as transversity does, which makes them a background for transversity measurements in the Drell-Yan process and new physics studies in W-boson production. Using the current knowledge of the relevant TMDs we conclude that this background is negligible and, therefore, will not hamper transversity measurements nor new physics studies when performed in the laboratory frame. We also point out a cross-check asymmetry measurement to bound the TMD contributions, which is independent of assumptions on the sizes of the relevant TMDs.

Double Sivers effect asymmetries and their impact on transversity measurements at RHIC

We study double transverse spin asymmetries in the Drell-Yan process at measured transverse momentum of the lepton pair. Contrary to what a collinear factorization approach would suggest, a nonzero double transverse spin asymmetry in the laboratory frame a priori does not imply nonzero transversity. TMD effects, such as the double Sivers effect, in principle form a background. Using the current knowledge of the relevant TMDs we estimate their contribution in the laboratory frame for Drell-Yan and W production at RHIC and point out a cross check asymmetry measurement to bound the TMD contributions. We also comment on the transverse momentum integrated asymmetries that only receive power suppressed background contributions.

Direct Probes of Linearly Polarized Gluons inside Unpolarized Hadrons

We show that linearly polarized gluons inside unpolarized hadrons can be directly probed in jet or heavy quark pair production in electron-hadron collisions. We discuss the simplest cos (2 phi) asymmetries and estimate their maximal value, concluding that measurements of the unknown linearly polarized gluon distribution in the proton should be feasible in future EIC or LHeC experiments. Analogous asymmetries in hadron-hadron collisions suffer from factorization breaking contributions and would allow to quantify the importance of initial and final state interactions.

Test of the Universality of Naive-time-reversal-odd Fragmentation Functions

We investigate the ''spontaneous'' hyperon transverse polarization in $e^+e^-$ annihilation and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes as a test of the universality of the naive-time-reversal-odd transverse momentum dependent fragmentation functions. We find that universality implies definite sign relations among various observables. This provides a unique opportunity to study initial/final state interaction effects in the fragmentation process and test the associated factorization.

Transverse Lambda polarization at high energy colliders

Measurements of transverse polarization of Lambda hyperons produced in high energy pp collisions may help to address several open issues about Lambda production and polarization mechanisms, such as the amount of SU(3) breaking, the importance of gluons and sea quarks, and the origin of spontaneous Lambda polarization. The process p + p -> Lambda^\uparrow + jet + X at midrapidity is ideally suited for this purpose, for instance at LHC's ALICE experiment. New expressions and predictions are presented for the transverse Lambda polarization in this process, within a factorized description which involves transverse momentum and spin dependence in the fragmentation process. Uncertainties from the unpolarized Lambda fragmentation functions, due to the unknown magnitude of SU(3) breaking and the apparent inconsistency between pp and e^+ e^- data, are investigated.

Bounding W-W' mixing with spin asymmetries at RHIC

The W boson can obtain a small right-handed coupling to quarks and leptons through mixing with a hypothetical W' boson that appears in many extensions of the Standard Model. Measuring or even bounding this coupling to the light quarks is very challenging. Only one model independent bound on the absolute value of the complex mixing parameter has been obtained to date. Here we discuss a method sensitive to both the real and CP-violating imaginary parts of the coupling, independent of assumptions on the new physics, and demonstrate quantitatively the feasibility of its measurement at RHIC.

The influence of strong magnetic fields and instantons on the phase structure of the two-flavor NJL model

Both in heavy-ion collisions as in magnetars very strong magnetic fields are produced, which has its influence on the phases of matter involved. In this paper we investigate the effect of strong magnetic fields (B = 5 m_pi^2 /e = 1.7 x 10^19 G) on the chiral symmetry restoring phase transition using the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. It is observed that the pattern of phase transitions depends on the relative magnitude of the magnetic field and the instanton interaction strength. We study two specific regimes in the phase diagram, high chemical potential and zero temperature and vice versa, which are of relevance for neutron stars and heavy-ion collisions respectively. In order to shed light on the behavior of the phase transitions we study the dependence of the minima of the effective potential on the occupation of Landau levels. We observe a near-degeneracy of multiple minima with differing occupation numbers, of which some become the global minimum upon changing the magnetic field or the chemical potential. These minima differ considerably in the amount of chiral symmetry breaking and in some cases also of isospin breaking.

Dijet imbalance in hadronic collisions

The imbalance of dijets produced in hadronic collisions has been used to extract the average transverse momentum of partons inside the hadrons. In this paper we discuss new contributions to the dijet imbalance that could complicate or even hamper this extraction. They are due to polarization of initial state partons inside unpolarized hadrons that can arise in the presence of nonzero parton transverse momentum. Transversely polarized quarks and linearly polarized gluons produce specific azimuthal dependences of the two jets that in principle are not suppressed. Their effects cannot be isolated just by looking at the angular deviation from the back-to-back situation, rather they enter jet broadening observables. In this way they directly affect the extraction of the average transverse momentum of unpolarized partons that is thought to be extracted. We discuss appropriately weighted cross sections to isolate the additional contributions.

Transverse Lambda Polarization at LHC

Transverse polarization of Lambda hyperons produced in p p and p Pb collisions is discussed. A factorized description in the intermediate to high p_T region is considered that involves transverse momentum and spin dependence in the fragmentation process. Consequences and suggestions for investigations at LHC are pointed out for the process p + p -> Lambda^uparrow + jets + X at midrapidity and p + p/Pb -> Lambda^uparrow + X in the forward region.

The high temperature CP-restoring phase transition at theta = pi

The CP-restoring phase transition at theta = pi and high temperature is investigated using two related models that aim to describe the low-energy phenomenology of QCD, the NJL model and the linear sigma model coupled to quarks. Despite many similarities between the models, different predictions for the order of the phase transition result. Using the Landau-Ginzburg formalism, the origin of this difference is traced back to a non-analytic vacuum term at zero temperature that is present in the NJL model, but usually not included in the linear sigma model. Due to the absence of explicit CP violation, this term always alters the qualitative aspects of the high temperature phase transition at theta = pi, just as for theta = 0 in the chiral limit.

Spontaneous CP violation in the NJL model at theta = pi

As is well-known, spontaneous CP-violation in the strong interaction is possible at theta = pi, which is commonly referred to as Dashen's phenomenon. This phenomenon has been studied extensively using chiral Lagrangians. Here the two-flavor NJL model at theta = pi is discussed. It turns out that the occurrence of spontaneous CP-violation depends on the strength of the 't Hooft determinant interaction, which describes the effect of instanton interactions. The dependence of the phase structure, and in particular of the CP-violating phase, on the quark masses, temperature, baryon and isospin chemical potential is examined in detail. The latter dependence shows a modification of the charged pion condensed phase first discussed by Son and Stephanov.

The saturation scale and its x-dependence from Lambda polarization studies

The transverse polarization of forward Lambda hyperons produced in high-energy p-A collisions is expected to display an extremum at a transverse momentum around the saturation scale. This was first observed within the context of the McLerran-Venugopalan model which has an x-independent saturation scale. The extremum arises due to the k_t-odd nature of the polarization dependent fragmentation function, which probes approximately the derivative of the dipole scattering amplitude. The amplitude changes most strongly around the saturation scale, resulting in a peak in the polarization. We find that the observation also extends to the more realistic case in which the saturation scale Q_s is x dependent. Since a range of x and therefore Q_s values is probed at a given transverse momentum and rapidity, this result is a priori not expected. Moreover, the measurement of Lambda polarization over a range of x_F values actually provides a direct probe of the x dependence of the saturation scale. This novel feature is demonstrated for typical LHC kinematics and for several phenomenological models of the dipole scattering amplitude. We show that although the measurement will be challenging, it may be feasible at LHC. The situation at RHIC is not favorable, because the peak will likely be at too low transverse momentum of the Lambda to be a trustworthy measure of the saturation scale.

Geometric Scaling at RHIC and LHC

We demonstrate that the RHIC data for hadron production in d-Au collisions for all available rapidities are compatible with geometric scaling. In order to establish the presence of scaling violations expected from small-x evolution a much larger range in transverse momentum and rapidity needs to be probed. We show that the fall-off of the transverse momentum distribution of produced hadrons at LHC is a sensitive probe of small-x evolution.

Spontaneous CP-violation in the strong interaction at theta = pi

Spontaneous CP-violation in the strong interaction is analyzed at theta = pi within the framework of the two-flavor NJL model. It is found that the occurrence of spontaneous CP-violation at theta = pi depends on the strength of the 't Hooft determinant interaction, which describes the effect of instanton interactions. The dependence of the phase structure, and in particular of the CP-violating phase, on the quark masses, temperature, baryon and isospin chemical potential is examined in detail. When available a comparison to earlier results from chiral perturbation theory is made. From our results we conclude that spontaneous CP-violation in the strong interaction is an inherently low-energy phenomenon. In all cases we find agreement with the Vafa-Witten theorem, also at nonzero density and temperature. Meson masses and mixing in the CP-violating phase display some unusual features as a function of instanton interaction strength. A modification of the condition for charged pion condensation at nonzero isospin chemical potential and a novel phase of charged a_0 mesons are discussed.
