Thermodynamics of the O(N) Nonlinear Sigma Model in 1+1 Dimensions

The thermodynamics of the O(N) nonlinear sigma model in 1+1 dimensions is studied. We calculate the pressure to next-to-leading order in the 1/N expansion and show that at this order, only the minimum of the effective potential can be rendered finite by temperature-independent renormalization. To obtain a finite effective potential away from the minimum requires an arbitrary choice of prescription, which implies that the temperature dependence is ambiguous. We show that the problem is linked to thermal infrared renormalons.

Theoretical aspects of spin physics

A summary is given of how spin enters in collinearly factorizing processes. Next, theoretical aspects of polarization in processes beyond collinear factorization are discussed in more detail, with special focus on recent developments concerning the color gauge invariant definitions of transverse momentum dependent distribution and fragmentation functions, such as the Sivers and Collins effect functions. This has particular relevance for azimuthal single spin asymmetries, which currently receive much theoretical and experimental attention.

Universality of T-odd effects in single spin and azimuthal asymmetries

We analyze the transverse momentum dependent distribution and fragmentation functions in space-like and time-like hard processes involving at least two hadrons, in particular 1-particle inclusive leptoproduction, the Drell-Yan process and two-particle inclusive hadron production in electron-positron annihilation. As is well-known, transverse momentum dependence allows for the appearance of unsuppressed single spin azimuthal asymmetries, such as Sivers and Collins asymmetries. Recently, Belitsky, Ji and Yuan obtained fully color gauge invariant expressions for the relevant matrix elements appearing in these asymmetries at leading order in an expansion in the inverse hard scale. We rederive these results and extend them to observables at the next order in this expansion. We observe that at leading order one retains a probability interpretation, contrary to a claim in the literature and show the direct relation between the Sivers effect in single spin asymmetries and the Qiu-Sterman mechanism. We also study fragmentation functions, where the process dependent gauge link structure of the correlators is not the only source of T-odd observables and discuss the implications for universality.

Review of QCD spin physics

A short review is given of QCD spin physics and its major aims: obtaining the polarized gluon density, the transversity distribution and understanding single spin asymmetries. The importance of the Drell-Yan process, the role of electron-positron colliders and the use of polarization to probe other, not spin specific physics are emphasized.

Interference fragmentation functions in electron-positron annihilation

We study the process of electron-positron annihilation into back-to-back jets, where in each jet a pair of hadrons is detected. The orientation of these two pairs with respect to each other can be used to extract the interference fragmentation functions in a clean way, for instance from BELLE or BABAR experiment data. This is of relevance for studies of the transversity distribution function. In particular, we focus on two azimuthal asymmetries. The first one has already been studied by Artru and Collins, but is now expressed in terms of interference fragmentation functions. The second asymmetry is new and involves a function that is related to longitudinal jet handedness. This asymmetry offers a different way of studying handedness correlations.

Polarized Hyperons from pA Scattering in the Gluon Saturation Regime

We study the production of transversely polarized Lambda hyperons in high-energy collisions of protons with large nuclei. The large gluon density of the target at saturation provides an intrinsic semi-hard scale which should naturally allow for a weak-coupling QCD description of the process in terms of a convolution of the quark distribution of the proton with the elementary quark-nucleus scattering cross section (resummed to all twists) and a fragmentation function. In this case of transversely polarized Lambda production we employ a so-called polarizing fragmentation function, which is an odd function of the transverse momentum of the Lambda relative to the fragmenting quark. Due to this k_t-odd nature, the resulting Lambda polarization is essentially proportional to the derivative of the quark-nucleus cross section with respect to transverse momentum, which peaks near the saturation momentum scale. Such processes might therefore provide generic signatures for high parton density effects and for the approach to the ``black-body'' (unitarity) limit of hadronic scattering.

Initial-State Interactions in the Unpolarized Drell-Yan Process

We show that initial-state interactions contribute to the $\cos 2 ϕ$ distribution in unpolarized Drell-Yan lepton pair production $p p$ and $ p \bar p \to \ell^+ \ell^- X$, without suppression. The asymmetry is expressed as a product of chiral-odd distributions $h_1^\perp(x_1,\bm{p}_\perp^2)\times \bar h_1^\perp(x_2,\bm{k}_\perp^2) $, where the quark-transversity function $h_1^\perp(x,\bm{p}_\perp^2)$ is the transverse momentum dependent, light-cone momentum distribution of transversely polarized quarks in an {\it unpolarized} proton. We compute this (naive) $T$-odd and chiral-odd distribution function and the resulting $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetry explicitly in a quark-scalar diquark model for the proton with initial-state gluon interaction. In this model the function $h_1^\perp(x,\bm{p}_\perp^2)$ equals the $T$-odd (chiral-even) Sivers effect function $f^\perp_{1T}(x,\bm{p}_\perp^2)$. This suggests that the single-spin asymmetries in the SIDIS and the Drell-Yan process are closely related to the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetry of the unpolarized Drell-Yan process, since all can arise from the same underlying mechanism. This provides new insight regarding the role of quark and gluon orbital angular momentum as well as that of initial- and final-state gluon exchange interactions in hard QCD processes.

Handedness inside the proton

The transversity of quarks inside unpolarized hadrons and its phenomenology are discussed. Several experimental suggestions are proposed that would allow further study of this intrinsic handedness.

Mapping the Transverse Nucleon Spin

The transverse nucleon spin can be transferred to the quarks and gluons in several ways. In the factorizing, hard scattering processes to be considered, these are parameterized at leading twist by the transversity distribution function and at next-to-leading twist by quark-gluon correlation functions. The latter enter the description of the structure function $g_2$ and possibly of single spin asymmetries. It is discussed what is known about these functions and what are the remaining open issues.

Exploring the QED vacuum with laser interferometers

It is demonstrated that the nonlinear, and as yet unobserved, QED effect of slowing down light by application of a strong magnetic field may be observable with large laser interferometers like for instance LIGO or GEO600.

Theoretical aspects of transversity observables

Theoretical aspects of transversity observables are reviewed. The main focus is on two leading twist transversity single spin asymmetries, one arising from the Collins effect and one from the interference fragmentation functions. Electron-positron annihilation experiments which are required to obtain these fragmentation functions are discussed, as well as the issues of factorization, evolution and Sudakov factors for the relevant observables. These theoretical considerations pinpoint the most realistic scenarios towards measurements of transversity.

Single transverse-spin asymmetry in Drell-Yan lepton angular distribution

We calculate a single transverse-spin asymmetry for the Drell-Yan lepton-pair's angular distribution in perturbative QCD. At leading order in the strong coupling constant, the asymmetry is expressed in terms of a twist-3 quark-gluon correlation function T_F^{(V)}(x_1,x_2). In our calculation, the same result was obtained in both light-cone and covariant gauge in QCD, while keeping explicit electromagnetic current conservation for the virtual photon that decays into the lepton pair. We also present a numerical estimate of the asymmetry and compare the result to an existing other prediction.

Transversity single spin asymmetries

Issues of factorization, evolution and Sudakov factors for the relevant observables are discussed. These theoretical considerations pinpoint the most realistic scenarios towards measurements of transversity.

Sudakov suppression in azimuthal spin asymmetries

It is shown that transverse momentum dependent azimuthal spin asymmetries suffer from suppression due to Sudakov factors, in the region where the transverse momentum is much smaller than the large energy scale Q^2. The size and Q^2 dependence of this suppression are studied numerically for two such asymmetries, both arising due to the Collins effect. General features are discussed of how the fall-off with Q^2 is affected by the nonperturbative Sudakov factor and by the transverse momentum weights and angular dependences that appear in different asymmetries. For a subset of asymmetries the asymptotic Q^2 behavior is calculated analytically, providing an upper bound for the decrease with energy of other asymmetries. The effect of Sudakov factors on the transverse momentum distributions is found to be very significant already at present-day collider energies. Therefore, it is essential to take into account Sudakov factors in transverse momentum dependent azimuthal spin asymmetries.

Evolution of transverse momentum dependent distribution and fragmentation functions

We use Lorentz invariance and the QCD equations of motion to study the evolution of functions that appear at leading order in a 1/Q expansion in azimuthal asymmetries. This includes the evolution equation of the Collins fragmentation function. The moments of these functions are matrix elements of known twist two and twist three operators. We present the evolution in the large N_c limit, restricting to non-singlet for the chiral-even functions.

Double transverse spin asymmetries in vector boson production

We investigate a helicity non-flip double transverse spin asymmetry in vector boson production in hadron-hadron scattering, which was first considered by Ralston and Soper at the tree level. It does not involve transversity functions and in principle also arises in W-boson production for which we present the expressions. The asymmetry requires observing the transverse momentum of the vector boson, but it is not suppressed by explicit inverse powers of a large energy scale. However, as we will show, inclusion of Sudakov factors causes suppression of the asymmetry, which increases with energy. Moreover, the asymmetry is shown to be approximately proportional to x_1 g_1(x_1) x_2 \bar g_1(x_2), which gives rise to additional suppression at small values of the light cone momentum fractions. This implies that it is negligible for Z or W production and is mainly of interest for γ^* at low energies. We also compare the asymmetry with other types of double transverse spin asymmetries and discuss how to disentangle them.

Transversely polarized Lambda production

Transversely polarized Lambda production in hard scattering processes is discussed in terms of a leading twist T-odd fragmentation function which describes the fragmentation of an unpolarized quark into a transversely polarized Lambda. We focus on the properties of this function and its relevance for the RHIC and HERMES experiments.

Transverse polarization distribution and fragmentation functions

We discuss transverse polarization distribution and fragmentation functions, in particular, T-odd functions with transverse momentum dependence, which might be relevant for the description of single transverse spin asymmetries. The role of intrinsic tranverse momentum in the expansion in inverse powers of the hard scale is elaborated upon. The sin(phi) single spin asymmetry in the process e \vec{p} -> e' pi^+ X as recently reported by the HERMES Collaboration is investigated, in particular, by using the bag model.
