Goldstone bosons and fermions in QCD

We consider the version of QCD in Euclidean Landau gauge in which the restriction to the Gribov region is implemented by a local, renormalizable action. This action depends on the Gribov parameter $γ$, with dimensions of (mass)$^4$, whose value is fixed in terms of $Λ_{QCD}$, by the gap equation, known as the horizon condition, ${\p Γ\over \p γ} = 0$, where $Γ$ is the quantum effective action. The restriction to the Gribov region suppresses gluons in the infrared, which nicely explains why gluons are not in the physical spectrum, but this only makes makes more mysterious the origin of the long-range force between quarks. In the present article we exhibit the symmetries of $Γ$, and show that the solution to the gap equation, which defines the classical vacuum, spontaneously breaks some of the symmetries $Γ$. This implies the existence of massless Goldstone bosons and fermions that do not appear in the physical spectrum. Some of the Goldstone bosons may be exchanged between quarks, and are candidates for a long-range confining force. As an exact result we also find that in the infrared limit the gluon propagator vanishes like $k^2$.

Infrared Critical Exponents in Finite-Temperature Coulomb Gauge QCD

We investigate the infrared critical exponents of Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory in the limit of very high temperature. This allows us to focus on one scale (the spatial momentum) since all but the lowest Matsubara frequency decouple from the deep infrared. From the first-order Dyson-Schwinger equations in a bare-vertex truncation we obtain infrared exponents which correspond to confining or overconfining (yet mathematically well-defined) solutions. For three spatial dimensions the exponents are close to what is expected for a linearly rising color-Coulomb potential.

Truncating first-order Dyson-Schwinger equations in Coulomb-Gauge Yang-Mills theory

The non-perturbative domain of QCD contains confinement, chiral symmetry breaking, and the bound state spectrum. For the calculation of the latter, the Coulomb gauge is particularly well-suited. Access to these non-perturbative properties should be possible by means of the Green's functions. However, Coulomb gauge is also very involved, and thus hard to tackle. We introduce a novel BRST-type operator r, and show that the left-hand side of Gauss' law is r-exact. We investigate a possible truncation scheme of the Dyson-Schwinger equations in first-order formalism for the propagators based on an instantaneous approximation. We demonstrate that this is insufficient to obtain solutions with the expected property of a linear-rising Coulomb potential. We also show systematically that a class of possible vertex dressings does not change this result.

Some exact infrared properties of gluon and ghost propagators and long-range force in QCD

We derive some exact relations in Landau gauge that follow from a cut-off at the Gribov horizon which is then implemented by a local, renormalizable action involving auxiliary bose and fermi ghosts. The fermi ghost propagator is more singular than $1/k^2$ at $k = 0$, and the relation $α_D + 2 α_G = (D - 4)/2$ holds between the infrared critical exponents of the gluon and ghost propagators $D(k)$ and $G(k)$ in $D$ Euclidean dimensions. Finally, in $D$ Euclidean dimensions, there is a long-range force, transmitted by the propagator of the auxiliary bose ghost that corresponds to a linearly rising potential with tensor coupling to colored quarks that is proportional to the renormalization-group invariant $g^2 D(k) G^2(k)$. A comparison with numerical results is discussed.

Contributions to the QCD Pressure Beyond Perturbation Theory

In this article we report on a new proposal to treat the infrared problems of thermal QCD by taking into account explicitly the confining influence of the Gribov horizon. In order to make clear the possible value of such an approach, we briefly review the most important arguments why a straightforward perturbative description of finite-temperature QCD is unlikely to be successful. From the infrared problems of thermal perturbation theory one can conclude that confinement effects and bound states probably play an important role also in the high-temperature phase. To set the stage we recount the supposed role of the Gribov horizon for confinement, before we turn to the application to finite-temperature theory. In the current approach it has been found that the contributions to the free energy from the explicit inclusion of the horizon begin to set in at order $g^6$ -- precisely where the infrared problems of thermal QCD lead to a breakdown of ordinary perturbation theory. From the study of observables (free energy, anomaly, bulk viscosity) we also note that for thermodynamic observables the leading order term obtained by such an expansion in the coupling strongly deviates from the more complete numerical solution. This can be regarded as yet another sign for general problems of series expansions in thermal QCD.

Nonperturbative contributions to the QCD pressure

We summarize the most important arguments why a perturbative description of finite-temperature QCD is unlikely to be possible and review various well-established approaches to deal with this problem. Then, using a recently proposed method, we investigate nonperturbative contributions to the QCD pressure and other observables (like energy, anomaly and bulk viscosity) obtained by imposing a functional cutoff at the Gribov horizon. Finally, we discuss how such contributions fit into the picture of consecutive effective theories, as proposed by Braaten and Nieto, and give an outline of the next steps necessary to improve this type of calculation.

Equation of State of Gluon Plasma from Local Action

We review recent analytic and numerical results concerning the confinement scenario in Coulomb gauge. We then consider a local, renormalizable, BRST-invariant action for QCD in Coulomb gauge that contains auxiliary bose and fermi ghost fields and sources. When the auxiliary fields are integrated out, one obtains the standard Coulomb gauge action with a cut-off at the Gribov horizon. We use the local formulation to calculate the leading correction to the Stefan-Boltzmann equation of state at high temperature due to the cut-off at the Gribov horizon. It is of order $g^6$, which is precisely the order at which the infrared divergence found by Lindé divergence first occurs. No such divergence arises in the present calculation because the propagator of would-be physical gluons is suppressed in the infrared due to the proximity of the Gribov horizon in infrared directions.

On the Equation of State of the Gluon Plasma

We consider a local, renormalizable, BRST-invariant action for QCD in Coulomb gauge that contains auxiliary bose and fermi ghost fields. It possess a non-perturbative vacuum that spontaneously breaks BRST-invariance. The vacuum condition leads to a gap equation that introduces a mass scale. Calculations are done to one-loop order in a perturbative expansion about this vacuum. They are free of the finite-$T$ infrared divergences found by Lindé and which occur in the order $g^6$ corrections to the Stefan-Boltzmann equation of state. We obtain a finite result for these corrections.

Equation of State of Gluon Plasma from Gribov Region

We describe the gluon plasma in zeroth order as a gas of free quasi-particles with a temperature-independent dispersion relation of Gribov type, $E(k) = \sqrt{k^2 + {M^4 \over k^2}}$, that results from the restriction of the physical state space to the Gribov region. The effective mass ${M^2 \over k}$ controls infrared divergences of finite-temperature perturbation theory. The equation of state of this gas is calculated and compared with numerical lattice data. At high temperature $T$ there are power corrections to the Stefan-Boltzmann law that are of relative order $1/T^3$ for pressure and $1/T^4$ for energy.

Gribov horizon under the (lattice) microscope

The infinite color-Coulomb energy of color-charged states is related to enhanced density of near-zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator in Coulomb gauge. We confirm the enhancement in numerical simulations and show that it is tied to the presence of percolating center vortex configurations.

Infrared Behaviour and Running Couplings in Interpolating Gauges in QCD

We consider the class of gauges that interpolates between Landau- and Coulomb-gauge QCD, and show the non-renormalisation of the two independent ghost-gluon vertices. This implies the existence of two RG-invariant running couplings, one of which is interpreted as an RG-invariant gauge parameter. We also present the asymptotic infrared limit of solutions of the Dyson-Schwinger equations in interpolating gauges. The infrared critical exponents of these solutions as well as the resulting infrared fixed point of one of the couplings are independent of the gauge parameter. This coupling also has a fixed point in the Coulomb gauge limit and constitutes a second invariant charge besides the well known colour-Coulomb potential.

Center Vortices and the Gribov Horizon

We show how the infinite color-Coulomb energy of color-charged states is related to enhanced density of near-zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator, and calculate this density numerically for both pure Yang-Mills and gauge-Higgs systems at zero temperature, and for pure gauge theory in the deconfined phase. We find that the enhancement of the eigenvalue density is tied to the presence of percolating center vortex configurations, and that this property disappears when center vortices are either removed from the lattice configurations, or cease to percolate. We further demonstrate that thin center vortices have a special geometrical status in gauge-field configuration space: Thin vortices are located at conical or wedge singularities on the Gribov horizon. We show that the Gribov region is itself a convex manifold in lattice configuration space. The Coulomb gauge condition also has a special status; it is shown to be an attractive fixed point of a more general gauge condition, interpolating between the Coulomb and Landau gauges.

Equation of State of Gluon Plasma from Fundamental Modular Region

Numerical studies of the bulk properties of the quark-gluon plasma reveal a pronounced drop in pressure $p$ compared to energy density $\e$ as the deconfining temperature is approached from above. We show by general thermodynamic reasoning that this can be explained only by a term $LT$ in the trace anomaly $þ(T) = \e - 3p$ that is linear in the temperature $T$. Such a term appears in the equation of state of the gluon plasma, which we calculate, described as a gas of quasi-particle gluons with dispersion relation $E(k) = \sqrt{k^2 + {M^4 \over k^2}}$, that follows from the restriction of the configuration space to the fundamental modular region.

Confinement and center vortices in Coulomb gauge: analytic and numerical results

We review the confinement scenario in Coulomb gauge. We show that when thin center vortex configurations are gauge transformed to Coulomb gauge, they lie on the common boundary of the fundamental modular region and the Gribov region. This unifies elements of the Gribov confinement scenario in Coulomb gauge and the center-vortex confinement scenario. We report on recent numerical studies which support both of these scenarios.

Coulomb Energy, Remnant Symmetry, and the Phases of Non-Abelian Gauge Theories

We show that the confining property of the one-gluon propagator, in Coulomb gauge, is linked to the unbroken realization of a remnant gauge symmetry which exists in this gauge. An order parameter for the remnant gauge symmetry is introduced, and its behavior is investigated in a variety of models via numerical simulations. We find that the color-Coulomb potential, associated with the gluon propagator, grows linearly with distance both in the confined and - surprisingly - in the high-temperature deconfined phase of pure Yang-Mills theory. We also find a remnant symmetry-breaking transition in SU(2) gauge-Higgs theory which completely isolates the Higgs from the (pseudo)confinement region of the phase diagram. This transition exists despite the absence, pointed out long ago by Fradkin and Shenker, of a genuine thermodynamic phase transition separating the two regions.

Analytic calculation of color-Coulomb potential and color confinement

We develop a calculational scheme in Coulomb and temporal gauge that respects gauge invariance and is most easily applied to the infrared asymptotic region of QCD. It resembles the Dyson-Schwinger equations of Euclidean quantum field theory in Landau gauge, but is 3-dimensional. A simple calculation yields a color-Coulomb potential that behaves at large $R$ approximately like $V_{\rm coul}(R) \sim R^{[1-0.2(d-1)]}$ for spatial dimension $1 \leq d \leq 3$. This is a linearly rising potential plus a rather weak dependence on $d$.

Non-perturbative Faddeev-Popov formula and infrared limit of QCD

We show that an exact non-perturbative quantization of continuum gauge theory is provided by the Faddeev-Popov formula in Landau gauge, $\d(\p \cdot A) \det[-\p \cdot D(A)] \exp[-S_{\rm YM}(A)]$, restricted to the region where the Faddeev-Popov operator is positive $-\p \cdot D(A) > 0$ (Gribov region). Although there are Gribov copies inside this region, they have no influence on expectation-values. The starting point of the derivation is stochastic quantization which determines the Euclidean probability distribution $P(A)$ by a method that is free of the Gribov critique. In the Landau-gauge limit the support of $P(A)$ shrinks down to the Gribov region with Faddeev-Popov weight. The cut-off of the resulting functional integral on the boundary of the Gribov region does not change the {\it form} of the Dyson-Schwinger equations, because $\det[-\p \cdot D(A)]$ vanishes on the boundary, so there is no boundary contribution. However this cut-off does provide {\it supplementary conditions} that govern the choice of solution of the DS equations. In particular the "horizon condition", though consistent with the perturbative renormalization group, puts QCD into a non-perturbative phase. The infrared asymptotic limit of the DS equations of QCD is obtained by neglecting the Yang-Mills action $S_{\rm YM}$. We sketch the extension to a BRST-invariant formulation. In the infrared asymptotic limit, the BRST-invariant action becomes BRST-exact, and defines a topological quantum field theory with an infinite mass gap. Confinement of quarks is discussed briefly.
