Numerical approach to the modular operator for fermionic systems

We numerically approximate the Tomita-Takesaki modular operator for local subalgebras of the 1+1-dimensional massive Majorana field. Our method works at the one-particle level with a discretisation of time-0 data in position space. The local subspaces we consider are associated with one double cone and with the disjoint union of two double cones. In order to avoid boundary effects, we primarily choose the overall spacetime to be a cylinder; different choices of boundary conditions (antiperiodic and periodic) are considered. We compare our numerical results to known analytic expressions in the massless case. It turns out that the modular operator has a non-trivial dependence on the mass. In the case of two double cones, the modular generator does not only have ''local'' contributions (supported on the diagonal in configuration space) but also ''bilocal'' terms (connecting the two double cone regions); we find the latter to be less prominent at higher masses, in line with expectations.

Quantum $L^p$ inequalities in thermal states

In thermal quantum field theory, the global Liouvillian (the generator of time translations) is passive. How is this reflected in the properties of its local density, a quantum field? We propose that the locally averaged density is bounded below, but not above, with respect to the noncommutative $L^4$ norm. This is analogous to the known quantum energy inequalities in the vacuum situation. Our examples include thermal equilibrium on Minkowski space, and the Unruh effect on the Rindler wedge, both for the real scalar free field.

Relative entropy for locally squeezed states

Relative entropy serves as a fundamental measure of state distinguishability in both quantum information theory and relativistic quantum field theory. Despite its conceptual importance, however, explicit computations of relative entropy remain notoriously difficult. Thus far, results in closed form have only been obtained for ground states, coherent states, and, more recently, single-mode squeezed states. In this work, we extend the analysis to multi-mode squeezed states, imposing that the squeezing generators be local either in space or in spacetime, which results in a continuum of squeezed modes. We provide a detailed and self-contained analysis of such states for a free scalar quantum field on Minkowski spacetime, connecting also with older results on the essential self-adjointness of the Wick square, and showing that they lie in the folium of the Minkowski vacuum representation. Although the local squeezing is natural from a foundational standpoint, we uncover a severe incompatibility between locality and squeezing: the relative entropy between a locally squeezed state and the vacuum generally diverges, however small the squeezing is. This shows that while locally squeezed states are well-defined elements of the state space of a free quantum field, they are infinitely different from the vacuum, in contrast to coherent states whose relative entropy with respect to the vacuum is finite.

Local operators in the Sine-Gordon model: $\partial_μϕ\, \partial_νϕ$ and the stress tensor

We consider the simplest non-trivial local composite operators in the massless Sine-Gordon model, which are $\partial_μϕ\, \partial_νϕ$ and the stress tensor $T_{μν}$. We show that even in the finite regime $β^2 < 4 π$ of the theory, these operators need additional renormalisation (beyond the free-field normal-ordering) at each order in perturbation theory. We further prove convergence of the renormalised perturbative series for their expectation values, both in the Euclidean signature and in Minkowski space-time, and for the latter in an arbitrary Hadamard state. Lastly, we show that one must add a quantum correction (proportional to $\hbar$) to the renormalised stress tensor to obtain a conserved quantity.

Modular Hamiltonian for fermions of small mass

We consider the algebra of massive fermions restricted to a diamond in two-dimensional Minkowski spacetime, and in the Minkowski vacuum state. While the massless modular Hamiltonian is known for this setting, the derivation of the massive one is an open problem. We compute the small-mass corrections to the modular Hamiltonian in a perturbative approach, finding some terms which were previously overlooked. Our approach can in principle be extended to all orders in the mass, even though it becomes computationally challenging.

The Sine-Gordon QFT in de Sitter spacetime

We consider the massless Sine-Gordon model in de Sitter spacetime, in the regime $β^2 < 4 π$ and using the framework of perturbative algebraic quantum field theory. We show that a Fock space representation exists for the free massless field, but that the natural one-parameter family of vacuum-like states breaks the de Sitter boost symmetries. We prove convergence of the perturbative series for the S matrix in this representation, and construct the interacting Haag-Kastler net of local algebras from the relative S matrices. We show that the net fulfills isotony, locality and de Sitter covariance (in the algebraic adiabatic limit), even though the states that we consider are not invariant. We furthermore prove convergence of the perturbative series for the interacting field and the vertex operators, and verify that the interacting equation of motion holds.

Modular Hamiltonian and modular flow of massless fermions on a cylinder

We determine explicitly the modular flow and the modular Hamiltonian for massless free fermions in diamonds on a cylinder in 1+1 dimensions. We consider both periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions, the ground state in the antiperiodic case and the most general family of quasi-free zero-energy ground states in the periodic case, which depend on four parameters and are generally mixed. While for the antiperiodic ground state and one periodic ground state (the maximally mixed zero-temperature state) the modular data is known, our results for the generic ground state in the periodic case are completely new. We find that generically both the modular flow and the modular Hamiltonian are non-local, and we show that in the parametric limit where the state becomes pure the modular data becomes local. Moreover, even in the local case the modular flow generically mixes the two chiralities. This kind of behavior has not been observed previously.

Fermionic integrable models and graded Borchers triples

We provide an operator-algebraic construction of integrable models of quantum field theory on 1+1 dimensional Minkowski space with fermionic scattering states. These are obtained by a grading of the wedge-local fields or, alternatively, of the underlying Borchers triple defining the theory. This leads to a net of graded-local field algebras, of which the even part can be considered observable, although it is lacking Haag duality. Importantly, the nuclearity condition implying nontriviality of the local field algebras is independent of the grading, so that existing results on this technical question can be utilized. Application of Haag-Ruelle scattering theory confirms that the asymptotic particles are indeed fermionic. We also discuss connections with the form factor programme.

Quantum energy inequalities in integrable models with several particle species and bound states

We investigate lower bounds to the time-smeared energy density, so-called quantum energy inequalities (QEI), in the class of integrable models of quantum field theory. Our main results are a state-independent QEI for models with constant scattering function and a QEI at one-particle level for generic models. In the latter case, we classify the possible form of the stress-energy tensor from first principles and establish a link between the existence of QEIs and the large-rapidity asymptotics of the two-particle form factor of the energy density. Concrete examples include the Bullough-Dodd, the Federbush, and the $O(n)$-nonlinear sigma models.

The massive modular Hamiltonian for a double cone

The Tomita-Takesaki modular operator for local algebras plays an important role in quantum field theory, and more recently in the study of relative entropy. However, the explicit expression of this operator, except for the case of wedges, is difficult to describe mathematically. We have obtained instead numerical results for the form of the modular Hamiltonian for a double cone in a massive scalar free field in (1+1)- and (3+1)-dimensional Minkowski space, which shows how it differs from the wedge case, in particular regarding the dependence of the modular Hamiltonian on the mass of the field.

On the mass dependence of the modular operator for a double cone

We present a numerical approximation scheme for the Tomita-Takesaki modular operator of local subalgebras in linear quantum fields, working at one-particle level. This is applied to the local subspaces for double cones in the vacuum sector of a massive scalar free field in (1 + 1)- and (3 + 1)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime, using a discretization of time-0 data in position space. In the case of a wedge region, one component of the modular generator is well-known to be a mass-independent multiplication operator; our results strongly suggest that for the double cone, the corresponding component is still at least close to a multiplication operator, but that it is dependent on mass and angular momentum.

A quantum energy inequality in the Sine--Gordon model

We consider the stress tensor in the massless Sine--Gordon model in the finite regime $β^2 < 4 π$ of the theory. We prove convergence of the renormalised perturbative series for the interacting stress tensor defined using the Bogoliubov formula in an arbitrary Hadamard state, even for the case that the smearing is only along a one-dimensional time-like worldline and not in space-time. We then show that the interacting energy density, as seen by an observer following this worldline, satisfies an absolute lower bound, that is a bound independent of the quantum state. Our proof employs and generalises existing techniques developed for free theories by Flanagan, Fewster and Smith.

Relative entropy of coherent states on general CCR algebras

For a subalgebra of a generic CCR algebra, we consider the relative entropy between a general (not necessarily pure) quasifree state and a coherent excitation thereof. We give a unified formula for this entropy in terms of single-particle modular data. Further, we investigate changes of the relative entropy along subalgebras arising from an increasing family of symplectic subspaces; here convexity of the entropy (as usually considered for the Quantum Null Energy Condition) is replaced with lower estimates for the second derivative, composed of "bulk terms" and "boundary terms". Our main assumption is that the subspaces are in differential modular position, a regularity condition that generalizes the usual notion of half-sided modular inclusions. We illustrate our results in relevant examples, including thermal states for the conformal $U(1)$-current.

Wedge-local fields in integrable models with bound states II. Diagonal S-matrix

We construct candidates for observables in wedge-shaped regions for a class of 1+1-dimensional integrable quantum field theories with bound states whose S-matrix is diagonal, by extending our previous methods for scalar S-matrices. Examples include the Z(N)-Ising models, the A_N-affine Toda field theories and some S-matrices with CDD factors. We show that these candidate operators which are associated with elementary particles commute weakly on a dense domain. For the models with two species of particles, we can take a larger domain of weak commutativity and give an argument for the Reeh-Schlieder property.

High energy bounds on wave operators

The wave operators $W_\pm(H_1,H_0)$ of two selfadjoint operators $H_0$ and $H_1$ are analyzed at asymptotic spectral values. Sufficient conditions for $\|(W_\pm(H_1,H_0)-P_{1}^\mathrm{ac}P_{0}^\mathrm{ac})f(H_0)\| <\infty$ are given, where $P_{j}^\mathrm{ac}$ projects onto the subspace of absolutely continuous spectrum of $H_j$ and $f$ is an unbounded function ($f$-boundedness), both in the case of trace-class perturbations and in terms of the high-energy behaviour of the boundary values of the resolvent of $H_0$ (smooth method). Examples include $f$-boundedness for the perturbed polyharmonic operator and for Schrödinger operators with matrix-valued potentials. We discuss an application to the problem of quantum backflow.

Relative normalizers of automorphism groups, infravacua and the problem of velocity superselection in QED

We advance superselection theory of pure states on a $C^*$-algebra $\mathfrak{A}$ outside of the conventional (DHR) setting. First, we canonically define conjugate and second conjugate classes of such states with respect to a given reference state $ω_{\mathrm{vac}}$ and background $a \in \mathrm{Aut}(\mathfrak{A})$. Next, for some subgroups $R \varsubsetneq S \varsubsetneq G\subset \mathrm{Aut}(\mathfrak{A})$ we study the family $\{\, ω_{\mathrm{vac}}\circ s\,|\, s\in S \}$ of infrared singular states whose superselection sectors may be disjoint for different $s$. We show that their conjugate and second conjugate classes always coincide provided that $R$ leaves the sector of $ω_{\mathrm{vac}}$ invariant and $a$ belongs to the relative normalizer $N_G(R,S):=\{\, g\in G\,|\, g\cdot S\cdot g^{-1}\subset R\,\}$. We study the basic properties of this apparently new group theoretic concept and show that the Kraus-Polley-Reents infravacuum automorphisms belong to the relative normalizers of the automorphism group of a suitable CCR algebra. Following up on this observation we show that the problem of velocity superselection in non-relativistic QED disappears at the level of conjugate and second conjugate classes, if they are computed with respect to an infravacuum background. We also demonstrate that for more regular backgrounds such merging effect does not occur.

Curing velocity superselection in non-relativistic QED by restriction to a lightcone

It is physically expected that plane-wave configurations of the electron in QED induce disjoint representations of the algebra of the electromagnetic fields. This phenomenon of velocity superselection, which is one aspect of the infrared problem, is mathematically well established in non-relativistic (Pauli-Fierz type) models of QED. We show that velocity superselection can be resolved in such models by restricting the electron states to the subalgebra of the fields localized in the future lightcone. This actually follows from a more general statement about equivalence of GNS representations for coherent states of the algebra of the future lightcone in free electromagnetism. Our analysis turns out to be meaningful in the non-relativistic setting and provides evidence in favour of the Buchholz-Roberts approach to infrared problems.

Towards an explicit construction of local observables in integrable quantum field theories

We present a new viewpoint on the construction of pointlike local fields in integrable models of quantum field theory. As usual, we define these local observables by their form factors; but rather than exhibiting their $n$-point functions and verifying the Wightman axioms, we aim to establish them as closed operators affiliated with a net of local von Neumann algebras, which is defined indirectly via wedge-local quantities. We also investigate whether these fields have the Reeh-Schlieder property, and in which sense they generate the net of algebras. Our investigation focuses on scalar models without bound states. We establish sufficient criteria for the existence of averaged fields as closable operators, and complete the construction in the specific case of the massive Ising model.
