Compact Manifolds with Unbounded Nilpotent Fundamental Groups and Positive Ricci Curvature

It follows from the work of Kapovitch and Wilking that a closed manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature has an almost nilpotent fundamental group. Leftover questions and conjectures have asked if in this context the fundamental group is actually uniformly almost abelian. The main goal of this work is to construct examples $(M^{9}_k, g_k)$ with uniformly positive Ricci curvature ${\rm Ric}_{g_k}\geq 8$ whose fundamental groups cannot be uniformly virtually abelian.

Ricci curvature and minimal hypersurfaces with large Betti numbers

In any dimension $n+1\ge 4$ we construct a sequence of closed $(n+1)$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with positive Ricci curvature admitting embedded two-sided minimal hypersurfaces such that the following hold: (i) any such hypersurface has Morse index one; (ii) the first Betti numbers of the hypsersurfaces are not uniformly bounded along the sequence.

New Topological Restrictions For Spaces With Nonnegative Ricci Curvature

We obtain new topological restrictions for complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and RCD(0,n) spaces. Our main results are a Betti number rigidity theorem which answers a question open since work of M.-T. Anderson in 1990, and a vanishing theorem for the simplicial volume generalizing a theorem of M. Gromov from 1982. Combining such results we obtain a new proof of the classification of noncompact 3-manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature, originally due to G. Liu in 2011, which extends to the synthetic setting.

Six dimensional counterexample to the Milnor Conjecture

We extend our previous work by building a smooth complete manifold $(M^6,g,p)$ with $\mathrm{Ric}\geq 0$ and whose fundamental group $π_1(M^6)=\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ is infinitely generated. The example is built with a variety of interesting geometric properties. To begin the universal cover $\tilde M^6$ is diffeomorphic to $S^3\times \mathbb{R}^3$, which turns out to be rather subtle as this diffeomorphism is increasingly twisting at infinity. The curvature of $M^6$ is uniformly bounded, and in fact decaying polynomially. The example is {\it locally} noncollapsed, in that $\mathrm{Vol}(B_1(x))>v>0$ for all $x\in M$. Finally, the space is built so that it is {\it almost } globally noncollapsed. Precisely, for every $η>0$ there exists radii $r_j\to \infty$ such that $\mathrm{Vol}(B_{r_j}(p))\geq r_j^{6-η}$. The broad outline for the construction of the example will closely follow the scheme introduced in our previous work. The six-dimensional case requires a couple of new points, in particular the corresponding Ricci curvature control on the equivariant mapping class group is harder and cannot be done in the same manner.

Fukaya-Yamaguchi Conjecture in Dimension Four

Fukaya and Yamaguchi conjectured that if $M^n$ is a manifold with nonnegative sectional curvature, then the fundamental group is uniformly virtually abelian. In this short note we observe that the conjecture holds in dimensions up to four.

Uniqueness on average of large isoperimetric sets in noncompact manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature

Let $(M^n,g)$ be a complete Riemannian manifold which is not isometric to $\mathbb{R}^n$, has nonnegative Ricci curvature, Euclidean volume growth, and quadratic Riemann curvature decay. We prove that there exists a set $\mathcal{G}\subset (0,\infty)$ with density $1$ at infinity such that for every $V\in \mathcal{G}$ there is a unique isoperimetric set of volume $V$ in $M$; moreover, its boundary is strictly volume preserving stable. The latter result cannot be improved to uniqueness or strict stability for every large volume. Indeed, we construct a complete Riemannian surface satisfying the previous assumptions and with the following additional property: there exist arbitrarily large and diverging intervals $I_n\subset (0,\infty)$ such that isoperimetric sets with volumes $V\in I_n$ exist, but they are neither unique nor do they have strictly volume preserving stable boundaries.

Monotonicity formula and stratification of the singular set of perimeter minimizers in RCD spaces

The goal of this paper is to establish a monotonicity formula for perimeter minimizing sets in RCD(0,N) metric measure cones, together with the associated rigidity statement. The applications include sharp Hausdorff dimension estimates for the singular strata of perimeter minimizing sets in non collapsed RCD spaces and the existence of blow-down cones for global perimeter minimizers in Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth.

The large scale structure of complete $4$-manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth

We survey the implications of our joint work with E. Bruè and A. Pigati on the structure of blow-downs for a smooth, complete, Riemannian $4$-manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth. Very imprecisely, any such manifold looks like a cone over a spherical space form at infinity. We present some open questions and discuss possible future directions along the way.

Topological regularity and stability of noncollapsed spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below

We investigate the topological regularity and stability of noncollapsed Ricci limit spaces $(M_i^n,g_i,p_i)\to (X^n,d)$. We confirm a conjecture proposed by Colding and Naber in dimension $n=4$, showing that the cross-sections of tangent cones at a given point $x\in X^4$ are all homeomorphic to a fixed spherical space form $S^3/Γ_x$, and $Γ_x$ is trivial away from a $0$-dimensional set. In dimensions $n>4$, we show an analogous statement at points where all tangent cones are $(n-4)$-symmetric. Furthermore, we prove that $(n-3)$-symmetric noncollapsed Ricci limits are topological manifolds, thus confirming a particular case of a conjecture due to Cheeger, Colding, and Tian. Our analysis relies on two key results, whose importance goes beyond their applications in the study of cross-sections of noncollapsed Ricci limit spaces: (i) A new manifold recognition theorem for noncollapsed ${\rm RCD}(-2,3)$ spaces. (ii) A cone rigidity result ruling out noncollapsed Ricci limit spaces of the form $\mathbb{R}^{n-3}\times C(\mathbb{RP}^2)$.

Stability of Tori under Lower Sectional Curvature

Let $(M^n_i, g_i)\to (X,d_X)$ be a Gromov-Hausdorff converging sequence of Riemannian manifolds with ${\rm Sec}_{g_i} \ge -1$, ${\rm diam}\, (M_i)\le D$, and such that the $M^n_i$ are all homeomorphic to tori $T^n$. Then $X$ is homeomorphic to a $k$-dimensional torus $T^k$ for some $0\leq k\leq n$. This answers a question of Petrunin in the affirmative. We show this result is false is the $M^n_i$ are homeomorphic tori which are only assumed to be Alexandrov spaces. When $n=3$, we prove the same tori stability under the weaker condition ${\rm Ric}_{g_i} \ge -2$.

Fundamental Groups and the Milnor Conjecture

It was conjectured by Milnor in 1968 that the fundamental group of a complete manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature is finitely generated. The main result of this paper is a counterexample, which provides an example $M^7$ with ${\rm Ric}\geq 0$ such that $π_1(M)=\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ is infinitely generated. There are several new points behind the result. The first is a new topological construction for building manifolds with infinitely generated fundamental groups, which can be interpreted as a smooth version of the fractal snowflake. The ability to build such a fractal structure will rely on a very twisted gluing mechanism. Thus the other new point is a careful analysis of the mapping class group $π_0\text{Diff}(S^3\times S^3)$ and its relationship to Ricci curvature. In particular, a key point will be to show that the action of $π_0\text{Diff}(S^3\times S^3)$ on the standard metric $g_{S^3\times S^3}$ lives in a path connected component of the space of metrics with ${\rm Ric}>0$.

Lipschitz continuity and Bochner-Eells-Sampson inequality for harmonic maps from $\mathrm{RCD}(K,N)$ spaces to $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ spaces

We establish Lipschitz regularity of harmonic maps from $\mathrm{RCD}(K,N)$ metric measure spaces with lower Ricci curvature bounds and dimension upper bounds in synthetic sense with values into $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ metric spaces with non-positive sectional curvature. Under the same assumptions, we obtain a Bochner-Eells-Sampson inequality with a Hessian type-term. This gives a fairly complete generalization of the classical theory for smooth source and target spaces to their natural synthetic counterparts and an affirmative answer to a question raised several times in the recent literature. The proofs build on a new interpretation of the interplay between Optimal Transport and the Heat Flow on the source space and on an original perturbation argument in the spirit of the viscosity theory of PDEs.

Asymptotic isoperimetry on non collapsed spaces with lower Ricci bounds

This paper studies sharp and rigid isoperimetric comparison theorems and asymptotic isoperimetric properties for small and large volumes on $N$-dimensional ${\rm RCD}(K,N)$ spaces $(X,\mathsf{d},\mathscr{H}^N)$. Moreover, we obtain almost regularity theorems formulated in terms of the isoperimetric profile and enhanced consequences at the level of several functional inequalities. Most of our statements are new even in the classical setting of smooth, non compact manifolds with lower Ricci curvature bounds. The synthetic theory plays a key role via compactness and stability arguments.

Sharp isoperimetric comparison on non-collapsed spaces with lower Ricci bounds

This paper studies sharp isoperimetric comparison theorems and sharp dimensional concavity properties of the isoperimetric profile for non smooth spaces with lower Ricci curvature bounds, the so-called $N$-dimensional ${\rm RCD}(K,N)$ spaces $(X,\mathsf{d},\mathscr{H}^N)$. The absence of most of the classical tools of Geometric Measure Theory and the possible non existence of isoperimetric regions on non compact spaces are handled via an original argument to estimate first and second variation of the area for isoperimetric sets, avoiding any regularity theory, in combination with an asymptotic mass decomposition result of perimeter-minimizing sequences. Most of our statements are new even for smooth, non compact manifolds with lower Ricci curvature bounds and for Alexandrov spaces with lower sectional curvature bounds. They generalize several results known for compact manifolds, non compact manifolds with uniformly bounded geometry at infinity, and Euclidean convex bodies.

Weak Laplacian bounds and minimal boundaries in non-smooth spaces with Ricci curvature lower bounds

The goal of the paper is four-fold. In the setting of non-smooth spaces with Ricci curvature lower bounds (more precisely RCD(K,N) metric measure spaces): - we develop an intrinsic theory of Laplacian bounds in viscosity sense and in a pointwise, heat flow related, sense, showing their equivalence also with Laplacian bounds in distributional sense; - relying on these tools, we establish a PDE principle relating lower Ricci curvature bounds to the preservation of Laplacian lower bounds under the evolution via the $p$-Hopf-Lax semigroup, for general exponents $p\in[1,\infty)$. This principle admits a broad range of applications, going much beyond the topic of the present paper; - we prove sharp Laplacian bounds on the distance function from a set (locally) minimizing the perimeter with a flexible technique, not involving any regularity theory; this corresponds to vanishing mean curvature in the smooth setting and encodes also information about the second variation of the area; - we initiate a regularity theory for boundaries of sets (locally) minimizing the perimeter, obtaining sharp dimension estimates for their singular sets, quantitative estimates of independent interest even in the smooth setting and topological regularity away from the singular set. The class of RCD(K,N) metric measure spaces includes as remarkable sub-classes: measured Gromov-Hausdorff limits of smooth manifolds with lower Ricci curvature bounds and finite dimensional Alexandrov spaces with lower sectional curvature bounds. Most of the results are new also in these frameworks. Moreover, the tools that we develop here have applications to classical questions in Geometric Analysis on smooth, non compact Riemannian manifolds with lower Ricci curvature bounds.

On the notion of Laplacian bounds on $\mathrm{RCD}$ spaces and applications

We show that several different interpretations of the inequality $Δf\leqη$ are equivalent in the setting of $\mathrm{RCD}(K,N)$ spaces. With respect to previously available results in this direction, we improve both on the generality of the underlying space and in terms of regularity to be assumed on the function $f$. Applications are presented.

The metric measure boundary of spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below

We solve a conjecture raised by Kapovitch, Lytchak, and Petrunin by showing that the metric measure boundary is vanishing on any ${\rm RCD}(K,N)$ space without boundary. Our result, combined with [Kapovitch-Lytchak-Petrunin '21], settles an open question about the existence of infinite geodesics on Alexandrov spaces without boundary raised by Perelman and Petrunin in 1996.

Quantitative Obata's Theorem

We prove a quantitative version of Obata's Theorem involving the shape of functions with null mean value when compared with the cosine of distance functions from single points. The deficit between the diameters of the manifold and of the corresponding sphere is bounded likewise. These results are obtained in the general framework of (possibly non-smooth) metric measure spaces with curvature-dimension conditions through a quantitative analysis of the transport-rays decompositions obtained by the localization method.
