Fick's las selects the Neumann boundary condition

We study the appearance of a boundary condition along an interface between two regions, one with constant diffusivity $1$ and the other with diffusivity $\eps>0$, when $\eps\to0$. In particular, we take Fick's diffusion law in a context of reaction-diffusion equation with bistable nonlinearity and show that the limit of the reaction-diffusion equation satisfies the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition along the interface. This problem is developed as an application of heterogeneous diffusion laws to study the geometry effect of domain.

Mean curvature interface limit from Glauber+Zero-range interacting particles

We derive a continuum mean-curvature flow as a certain hydrodynamic scaling limit of a class of Glauber+Zero-range particle systems. The Zero-range part moves particles while preserving particle numbers, and the Glauber part governs the creation and annihilation of particles and is set to favor two levels of particle density. When the two parts are simultaneously seen in certain different time-scales, the Zero-range part being diffusively scaled while the Glauber part is speeded up at a lesser rate, a mean-curvature interface flow emerges, with a homogenized `surface tension-mobility' parameter reflecting microscopic rates, between the two levels of particle density. We use relative entropy methods, along with a suitable `Boltzmann-Gibbs' principle, to show that the random microscopic system may be approximated by a `discretized' Allen-Cahn PDE with nonlinear diffusion. In turn, we show the behavior, especially generation and propagation of interface properties, of this `discretized' PDE.

Singular limit of an Allen-Cahn equation with nonlinear diffusion

We consider an Allen-Cahn equation with nonlinear diffusion, motivated by the study of the scaling limit of certain interacting particle systems. We investigate its singular limit and show the generation and propagation of an interface in the limit. The evolution of this limit interface is governed by mean curvature flow with a novel, homogenized speed in terms of a surface tension-mobility parameter emerging from the nonlinearity in our equation.

Spatial segregation limit of traveling wave solutions for a fully nonlinear strongly coupled competitive system

The paper is concerned with a singular limit for the bistable traveling wave problem in a very large class of two-species fully nonlinear parabolic systems with competitive reaction terms. Assuming existence of traveling waves and enough compactness, we derive and characterize the limiting problem. The assumptions and results are discussed in detail. The free boundary problem obtained at the limit is specified for important applications.

Mathematical treatment of PDE model describing chemotactic E. coli colonies

We consider an initial-boundary value problem describing the formation of colony patterns of bacteria Escherichia coli. This model consists of reaction-diffusion equations coupled with the Keller-Segel system from the chemotaxis theory in a bounded domain, supplemented with zero-flux boundary conditions and with non-negative initial data. We answer questions on the global in time existence of solutions as well as on their large time behaviour. Moreover, we show that solutions of a related model may blow up in a finite time.

A hyperbolic-elliptic-parabolic PDE model describing chemotactic E. coli colonies

We study a modified version of an initial-boundary value problem describing the formation of colony patterns of bacteria \textit{Escherichia Coli}. The original system of three parabolic equations was studied numerically and analytically and gave insights into the underlying mechanisms of chemotaxis. We focus here on the parabolic-elliptic-parabolic approximation and the hyperbolic-elliptic-parabolic limiting system which describes the case of pure chemotactic movement without random diffusion. We first construct local-in-time solutions for the parabolic-elliptic-parabolic system. Then we prove uniform \textit{a priori} estimates and we use them along with a compactness argument in order to construct local-in-time solutions for the hyperbolic-elliptic-parabolic limiting system. Finally, we prove that some initial conditions give rise to solutions which blow-up in finite time in the $L^\infty$ norm in all space dimensions. This last result violet is true even in space dimension 1, which is not the case for the full parabolic or parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel systems.

Ecological invasion in competition-diffusion systems when the exotic species is either very strong or very weak

Reaction-diffusion systems with a Lotka-Volterra-type reaction term, also known as competition-diffusion systems, have been used to investigate the dynamics of the competition among $m$ ecological species for a limited resource necessary to their survival and growth. Notwithstanding their rather simple mathematical structure, such systems may display quite interesting behaviours. In particular, while for $m=2$ no coexistence of the two species is usually possible, if $m \ge 3$ we may observe coexistence of all or a subset of the species, sensitively depending on the parameter values. Such coexistence can take the form of very complex spatio-temporal patterns and oscillations. Unfortunately, at the moment there are no known tools for a complete analytical study of such systems for $m \ge 3$. This means that establishing general criteria for the occurrence of coexistence appears to be very hard. In this paper we will instead give some criteria for the non-coexistence of species, motivated by the ecological problem of the invasion of an ecosystem by an exotic species. We will show that when the environment is very favourable to the invading species the invasion will always be successful and the native species will be driven to extinction. On the other hand, if the environment is not favourable enough, the invasion will always fail.

On the large time behavior of the solutions of a nonlocal ordinary differential equation with mass conservation

We consider an initial value problem for a nonlocal differential equation with a bistable nonlinearity in several space dimensions. The equation is an ordinary differential equation with respect to the time variable t, while the nonlocal term is expressed in terms of spatial integration. We discuss the large time behavior of solutions and prove, among other things, the convergence to steady-states. The proof that the solution orbits are relatively compact is based upon the rearrangement theory.

On a Cahn-Hilliard type phase field system related to tumor growth

The paper deals with a phase field system of Cahn-Hilliard type. For positive viscosity coefficients, the authors prove an existence and uniqueness result and study the long time behavior of the solution by assuming the nonlinearities to be rather general. In a more restricted setting, the limit as the viscosity coefficients tend to zero is investigated as well.

Front propagation in nonlinear parabolic equations

We study existence and stability of travelling waves for nonlinear convection diffusion equations in the 1-D Euclidean space. The diffusion coefficient depends on the gradient in analogy with the p-Laplacian and may be degenerate. Unconditional stability is established with respect to initial data perturbations in the Lebesgue space of integrable functions.

Interface dynamics of the porous medium equation with a bistable reaction term

We consider a degenerate partial differential equation arising in population dynamics, namely the porous medium equation with a bistable reaction term. We study its asymptotic behavior as a small parameter, related to the thickness of a diffuse interface, tends to zero. We prove the rapid formation of transition layers which then propagate. We prove the convergence to a sharp interface limit whose normal velocity, at each point, is that of the underlying degenerate travelling wave.

A finite volume method on general meshes for a degenerate parabolic convection-reaction-diffusion equation

We propose a finite volume method on general meshes for the discretization of a degenerate parabolic convection-reaction-diffusion equation. Equations of this type arise in many contexts, such as the modeling of contaminant transport in porous media. We discretize the diffusion term, which can be anisotropic and heterogeneous, via a hybrid finite volume scheme. We construct a partially upwind scheme for the convection term. We consider a wide range of unstructured possibly non-matching polygonal meshes in arbitrary space dimension. The only assumption on the mesh is that the volume elements must be star-shaped. The scheme is fully implicit in time, it is locally conservative and robust with respect to the P\'eclet number. We obtain a convergence result based upon a priori estimates and the Fr\'echet--Kolmogorov compactness theorem.

The singular limit of the Allen-Cahn equation and the FitzHugh-Nagumo system

We consider an Allen-Cahn type equation with a bistable nonlinearity associated to a double-well potential whose well-depths can be slightly unbalanced, and where the coefficient of the nonlinear reaction term is very small. Given rather general initial data, we perform a rigorous analysis of both the generation and the motion of interface. More precisely we show that the solution develops a steep transition layer within a small time, and we present an optimal estimate for its width. We then consider a class of reaction-diffusion systems which includes the FitzHugh-Nagumo system as a special case. Given rather general initial data, we show that the first component of the solution vector develops a steep transition layer and that all the results mentioned above remain true for this component.

Motion by anisotropic mean curvature as sharp interface limit of an inhomogeneous and anisotropic Allen-Cahn equation

We study the singular limit of a spatially inhomogeneous and anisotropic reaction-diffusion equation. We use a Finsler metric related to the anisotropic diffusion term and work in relative geometry. We prove a weak comparison principle and perform an analysis of both the generation and the motion of interfaces. The limit problem involves motion by anisotropic mean curvature. We also prove an optimal estimate of the thickness of the transition layer.
