Regurgitated Dark Matter

We present a new paradigm for the production of the dark matter (DM) relic abundance based on the evaporation of early Universe primordial black holes (PBHs) themselves formed from DM particles. As a concrete realization, we consider a minimal model of the dark sector in which a first-order phase transition results in the formation of Fermiball remnants that collapse to PBHs, which then emit DM particles. We show that the regurgitated DM scenario allows for DM in the mass range $\sim1$ GeV $- \,10^{16}$ GeV, thereby unlocking parameter space considered excluded.

Gravitational waves from cosmic superstrings and gauge strings

We perform a phenomenological comparison of the gravitational wave (GW) spectrum expected from cosmic gauge string networks and superstring networks comprised of multiple string types. We show how violations of scaling behavior and the evolution of the number of relativistic degrees of freedom in the early Universe affect the GW spectrum. We derive simple analytical expressions for the GW spectrum from superstrings and gauge strings that are valid for all frequencies relevant to pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) and laser interferometers. We analyze the latest data from PTAs and show that superstring networks are consistent with 32 nHz data from NANOGrav, but are excluded by 3.2 nHz data at $3σ$ unless the string coupling $g_s<0.2$ or the strings evolve in only about 10% of the volume of the higher-dimensional space. We also point out that while gauge string networks are excluded by NANOGrav-15 data at $3σ$, they are completely compatible with EPTA and PPTA data. Finally, we study correlations between GW signals at PTAs and laser interferometers.

Opening windows with Isospin-Violating Dark Matter

We consider the effect of isospin-violating dark matter-nucleon interactions on direct detection constraints in the regime of small dark matter mass and large scattering cross section. Isospin-violation can lead to both reductions in sensitivity (due to a reduced cross section for scattering with nuclei in the detector) and enhancements in sensitivity (due to a reduced cross section for scattering in the overburden). Isospin-violating effects can thus open up some closed regions of parameter space, while closing off other regions.

Hint of a new scalar interaction in LHCb data?

We explain recent LHCb measurements of the lepton universality ratios, $R_{D^{(*)}}^{τ/\ell}\equiv \frac{\mathcal{B}(\bar B \to D^{(*)+} τ^- \barν_τ)} {\mathcal{B}(\bar B \to D^{(*)+}\ell^- \barν_\ell)}$ and ${R(Λ_c^+)}^{τ/\ell} \equiv \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b \to Λ_c^+ τ^- \barν_τ)}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b \to Λ_c^+ \ell^- \barν_{\ell})}$ with $\ell=μ$, via new physics that affects $R_D^{τ/\ell}$ and $R(Λ_c^+)^{τ/\ell}$ but not $R_{D^*}^{τ/\ell}$. The scalar operator in the effective theory for new physics is indicated. We find that the forward-backward asymmetry and $τ$ polarization in $\bar{B} \to D^+ τ^{-} \barν_τ$ and $Λ_b \to Λ_c^+ τ^- \barν_τ$ decays are significantly affected by the scalar interaction. We construct a simple two Higgs doublet model as a realization of our scenario and consider lepton universality in semileptonic charm and top decays, radiative $B$ decay, $B$-mixing, and $Z \to b \bar b$.

Towards distinguishing Dirac from Majorana neutrino mass with gravitational waves

We propose a new method towards distinguishing the Dirac versus Majorana nature of neutrino masses from the spectrum of gravitational waves (GWs) associated with neutrino mass genesis. Motivated by the principle of generating small neutrino masses without tiny Yukawa couplings, we assume generic seesaw mechanisms for both Majorana and Dirac neutrino masses. For Majorana neutrinos, we further assume a spontaneously broken gauged $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry, independently of the type of Majorana seesaw mechanism, which gives a cosmic string induced GW signal flat over a wide range of frequencies. For Dirac neutrinos, we assume the spontaneous breaking of a $Z_2$ symmetry, the minimal symmetry choice associated with all Dirac seesaw mechanisms, which is softly broken, generating a peaked GW spectrum from the annihilation of the resulting domain walls. In fact, the GW spectra for all types of Dirac seesaws with such a broken $Z_2$ symmetry are identical, subject to a mild caveat. As an illustrative example, we study the simplest respective type-I seesaw mechanisms, and show that the striking difference in the shapes of the GW spectra can help differentiate between these Dirac and Majorana seesaws, complementing results of neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. We also discuss detailed implications of the recent NANOGrav data for Majorana and Dirac seesaw models.

$B \to K ν\barν$, MiniBooNE and muon $g-2$ anomalies from a dark sector

Belle II has reported the first evidence for $B^+ \to K^+ν\barν$ with a branching ratio $2.7 σ$ higher than the standard model expectation. We explain this, and the MiniBooNE and muon anomalous magnetic moment anomalies in a model with a dark scalar that couples to a slightly heavier sterile Dirac neutrino and that communicates with the visible sector via a Higgs portal. We make predictions for rare kaon and other $B$ meson decays.

How to measure the reactor neutrino flux below the inverse beta decay threshold with CE$ν$NS

Most antineutrinos produced in a nuclear reactor have energies below the inverse beta decay threshold, and have not yet been detected. We show that a coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering experiment with an ultra-low energy threshold like NUCLEUS can measure the flux of reactor neutrinos below 1.8 MeV. Using a regularized unfolding procedure, we find that a meaningful upper bound can be placed on the low energy flux, but the existence of the neutron capture component cannot be established.

New Physics Searches at Kaon and Hyperon Factories

Rare meson decays are among the most sensitive probes of both heavy and light new physics. Among them, new physics searches using kaons benefit from their small total decay widths and the availability of very large datasets. On the other hand, useful complementary information is provided by hyperon decay measurements. We summarize the relevant phenomenological models and the status of the searches in a comprehensive list of kaon and hyperon decay channels. We identify new search strategies for under-explored signatures, and demonstrate that the improved sensitivities from current and next-generation experiments could lead to a qualitative leap in the exploration of light dark sectors.

Dark photon and dark $Z$ mediated $B$ meson decays

We study flavor changing neutral current decays of $B$ and $K$ mesons in the dark $U(1)_D$ model, with the dark photon/dark $Z$ mass between 10 MeV and 2 GeV. Although the model provides an improved fit (compared to the standard model) to the differential decay distributions of $B \to K^{(*)} \ell^+ \ell^-$, with $\ell= μ, e$, and $B_s \to ϕμ^+ μ^-$, the allowed parameter space is ruled out by measurements of atomic parity violation, $K^+ \to μ^+ + invisible$ decay, and $B_s - \overline{B}_s$ mixing, among others. To evade constraints from low energy data, we extend the model to allow for (1) additional invisible $Z_D$ decay, (2) a direct vector coupling of $Z_D$ to muons, and (3) a direct coupling of $Z_D$ to both muons and electrons, with the electron coupling fine-tuned to cancel the $Z_D$ coupling to electrons via mixing. We find that only the latter case survives all constraints.

Correlated signals of first-order phase transitions and primordial black hole evaporation

Fermi balls produced in a cosmological first-order phase transition may collapse to primordial black holes (PBHs) if the fermion dark matter particles that comprise them interact via a sufficiently strong Yukawa force. We show that phase transitions described by a quartic thermal effective potential with vacuum energy, $0.1\lesssim B^{1/4}/{\rm MeV} \lesssim 10^3$, generate PBHs of mass, $10^{-20}\lesssim M_{\rm PBH}/M_\odot \lesssim 10^{-16}$, and gravitational waves from the phase transition (at THEIA/$μ$Ares) can be correlated with an isotropic extragalactic X-ray/$γ$-ray background from PBH evaporation (at AMEGO-X/e-ASTROGAM).

Implications of the first evidence for coherent elastic scattering of reactor neutrinos

The recent evidence for coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$ν$NS) in the NCC-1701 germanium detector using antineutrinos from the Dresden-II nuclear reactor is in good agreement with standard model expectations. However, we show that a $2σ$ improvement in the fit to the data can be achieved if the quenching factor is described by a modified Lindhard model. We also place constraints on the parameter space of a light vector or scalar mediator that couples to neutrinos and quarks, and on a neutrino magnetic moment. We demonstrate that the constraints are quite sensitive to the quenching factor at low recoil energies by comparing constraints for the standard Lindhard model with those by marginalizing over the two parameters of the modified Lindhard model.

$\bar B \to D^{(*)} \ell \bar{X}$ decays in effective field theory with massive right-handed neutrinos

We calculate the complete differential decay distributions for the $B$ meson decays, $\bar B \to D^{(*)} \ell \bar{X}$, to a massive right-handed (RH) neutrino in the low-energy effective field theory (LEFT) framework. We find that a massive RH neutrino does not introduce any new angular structures compared to the massless case, but can cause significant distortions in angular observables. We study the phenomenology of low-energy four-fermion operators permitted by the standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) extended with RH neutrinos (SMNEFT). We show that to explain the positive value of the difference in forward-backward asymmetries, $ΔA_{\text{FB}}\equiv A_{\text{FB}}^μ-A_{\text{FB}}^e$, tentatively inferred from Belle data, the RH neutrino must be massive. We also make predictions for $q^2$ dependent angular observables to motivate future measurements.

Decay of multiple dark matter particles to dark radiation in different epochs does not alleviate the Hubble tension

Decaying cold dark matter (CDM) has been considered as a mechanism to tackle the tensions in the Hubble expansion rate and the clustering of matter. However, polarization measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) severely constrain the fraction of dark matter decaying before recombination, and lensing of the CMB anisotropies by large-scale structure set strong constraints on dark matter decaying after recombination. Together, these constraints make an explanation of the Hubble tension in terms of decaying dark matter unlikely. In response to this situation, we investigate whether a dark matter ensemble with CDM particles decaying into free streaming dark radiation in different epochs can alleviate the problem. We find that it does not.

BSM $ν$ physics: complementarity across energies -- a white paper for Snowmass 2021

We reiterate that there is significant complementarity between low-energy experiments and high-energy colliders in exploring new physics associated with neutrino properties and their mass generation mechanisms. Signals of the new physics in the two energy regimes may be correlated with each other from the same underlying dynamics. We demonstrate the complementary nature by presenting the physics reaches for the Seesaw models of Type I, II and III, and for general neutrino interactions in an effective field theory framework, and in a $Z'$ model.

Correlated gravitational wave and microlensing signals of macroscopic dark matter

Fermion dark matter particles can aggregate to form extended dark matter structures via a first-order phase transition in which the particles get trapped in the false vacuum. We study Fermi balls created in a phase transition induced by a generic quartic thermal effective potential. We show that for Fermi balls of mass, $3\times 10^{-12}M_\odot \lesssim M_{\rm FB} \lesssim 10^{-5}M_\odot$, correlated observations of gravitational waves produced during the phase transition (at SKA/THEIA/$μ$Ares), and gravitational microlensing caused by Fermi balls (at Subaru-HSC), can be made.

Gravitational waves from first-order phase transitions in Majoron models of neutrino mass

We show how the generation of right-handed neutrino masses in Majoron models may be associated with a first-order phase transition and accompanied by the production of a stochastic background of gravitational waves (GWs). We explore different energy scales with only renormalizable operators in the effective potential. If the phase transition occurs above the electroweak scale, the signal can be tested by future interferometers. We consider two possible energy scales for phase transitions below the electroweak scale. If the phase transition occurs at a GeV, the signal can be tested at LISA and provide a complementary cosmological probe to right-handed neutrino searches at the FASER detector. If the phase transition occurs below 100 keV, we find that the peak of the GW spectrum is two or more orders of magnitude below the putative NANOGrav GW signal at low frequencies, but well within reach of the SKA and THEIA experiments. We show how searches of very low frequency GWs are motivated by solutions to the Hubble tension in which ordinary neutrinos interact with the dark sector. We also present general calculations of the phase transition temperature and Euclidean action that apply beyond Majoron models.

Axion-like particles resolve the $B \to πK$ and g-2 anomalies

We offer a new solution to an old puzzle in the penguin-dominated $B\toπK$ decays. The puzzle is the inconsistency among the measurements of the branching ratios and CP asymmetries of the four $B\toπK$ decays: $B^+ \to π^+ K^0$, $B^+\to π^0 K^+$, $B_d^0\toπ^- K^+$, $B_d^0\toπ^0 K^0$. We solve the $B\toπK$ puzzle by considering the effect of an axion-like particle (ALP) that mixes with the $π^0$ and has mass close to the $π^0$ mass. We show that the ALP can also explain the anomalies in the electron and muon anomalous magnetic moments.

Coherent neutrino scattering and the Migdal effect on the quenching factor

Recent measurements of the germanium quenching factor deviate significantly from the predictions of the standard Lindhard model for nuclear recoil energies below a keV. This departure may be explained by the Migdal effect in neutron scattering on germanium. We show that the Migdal effect on the quenching factor can mimic the signal of a light Z' or light scalar mediator in coherent elastic neutrino nucleus scattering experiments with reactor antineutrinos. It is imperative that the quenching factor of nuclei with low recoil energy thresholds be precisely measured close to threshold to avoid such confusion. This will also help in experimental searches of light dark matter.
