Scalar and tensor neutrino interactions

We constrain general Dirac neutrino interactions based on the Standard Model Effective Field Theory framework extended with right-handed neutrinos $N$ (SMNEFT) using deep inelastic and coherent elastic neutrino scattering, nuclear beta decay, and meson decay data, and high energy electron-proton and proton-proton collider data. We compute the one-loop anomalous dimensions of the low-energy effective field theory (LEFT) below the electroweak scale and of SMNEFT above the electroweak scale. The tree-level matching between LEFT and SMNEFT is performed at the electroweak scale. Currently, the most stringent limits on scalar and tensor interactions arise from pseudoscalar meson decays and the LHC measurements at the per mille level. In the future, the upcoming High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) has the potential to reach the $10^{-4}$ level and LHeC can play an important role under certain theoretical assumptions.

Oscillations of sterile neutrinos from dark matter decay eliminates the IceCube-Fermi tension

IceCube has observed a flux of cosmic neutrinos, with a "bump" in the energy range $10 \lesssim E/{\rm TeV} \lesssim 100$ that creates a $3σ$ tension with gamma-ray data from the Fermi satellite. This has been interpreted as evidence for a population of hidden cosmic-ray accelerators. We propose an alternative explanation of this conundrum on the basis of cold dark matter which decays into sterile neutrinos that after oscillations produce the bump in the cosmic neutrino spectrum.

Anomalous dimensions from Yukawa couplings in SMNEFT: four-fermion operators

The Standard Model Neutrino Effective Field Theory (SMNEFT) is the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) augmented with right-handed neutrinos. Building on our previous work, arXiv:2010.12109, we calculate the Yukawa coupling contributions to the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix for the 11 dimension-six four-fermion SMNEFT operators. We also present the new contributions to the anomalous dimension matrix for the 14 four-fermion SMEFT operators that mix with the SMNEFT operators through the Yukawa couplings of the right-handed neutrinos.

Axion-like particles, two-Higgs-doublet models, leptoquarks, and the electron and muon g-2

Data from the Muon g-2 experiment and measurements of the fine structure constant suggest that the anomalous magnetic moments of the muon and electron are at odds with standard model expectations. We survey the ability of axion-like-particles, two-Higgs-doublet models and leptoquarks to explain the discrepancies. We find that accounting for other constraints, all scenarios except the Type-I, Type-II and Type-Y two-Higgs-doublet models fit the data well.

Stellar cooling, inelastic dark matter, and XENON

We consider a novel scenario of dark photon-mediated inelastic dark matter to explain the white dwarf cooling excess suggested by its luminosity function, and the excess in electron recoil events at XENON1T. In the Sun, the dark photon $A'$ is produced mainly via thermal processes, and the heavier dark matter $χ_2$ is produced by the scattering of halo dark matter $χ_1$ with electrons. The XENON1T signal arises primarily by solar $A'$ scattering, and $A'$ emission by white dwarfs accommodates the extra cooling while maintaining consistency with other stellar cooling observations. A tritium component in the XENON1T detector is also required. We show for parameters that explain the XENON1T data, but not the white dwarf cooling anomaly, that a second signal peak may be buried in the XENON1T data and revealable at XENONnT. However, the parameters that give the double peak in the spectrum are incompatible with constraints from horizontal branch stars.

Anomalous dimensions from gauge couplings in SMEFT with right-handed neutrinos

Standard Model Neutrino Effective Field Theory (SMNEFT) is an effective theory with Standard Model (SM) gauge-invariant operators constructed only from SM and right-handed neutrino fields. For the full set of dimension-six SMNEFT operators, we present the gauge coupling terms of the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix for renormalization group evolution (RGE) of the Wilson coefficients between a new physics scale and the electroweak scale. We find that the SMNEFT operators can be divided into five subsets which are closed under RGE. Our results apply for both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. We also discuss the operator mixing pattern numerically and comment on some interesting phenomenological implications.

Gravitational wave signals of dark matter freeze-out

We study the stochastic background of gravitational waves which accompany the sudden freeze-out of dark matter triggered by a cosmological first order phase transition that endows dark matter with mass. We consider models that produce the measured dark matter relic abundance via (1) bubble filtering, and (2) inflation and reheating, and show that gravitational waves from these mechanisms are detectable at future interferometers.

Gravitational waves from neutrino mass and dark matter genesis

We introduce a model in which the genesis of dark matter (DM) and neutrino masses is associated with a first order phase transition of a scalar singlet field. During the phase transition a source right-handed neutrino (RHN) acquires a spacetime-dependent mass dynamically, a small fraction of which is converted via resonant oscillations into a very weakly mixed dark RHN which decays to a dark matter RHN with the observed relic abundance. Neutrino masses are generated via a traditional two RHN type-I seesaw between a fourth RHN and the source neutrino. The gravitational waves produced during the phase transition have a peak frequency that increases with the DM mass, and are detectable at future gravitational wave interferometers for DM masses above ~ 1 MeV. Since the source RHNs are heavier than the electroweak scale, successful leptogenesis is also attainable.

Heating neutron stars with GeV dark matter

An old neutron star (NS) may capture halo dark matter (DM) and get heated up by the deposited kinetic energy, thus behaving like a thermal DM detector with sensitivity to a wide range of DM masses and a variety of DM-quark interactions. Near future infrared telescopes will measure NS temperatures down to a few thousand Kelvin and probe NS heating by DM capture. We focus on GeV-mass Dirac fermion DM (which is beyond the reach of current DM direct detection experiments) in scenarios in which the DM capture rate can saturate the geometric limit. For concreteness, we study (1) a model that invokes dark decays of the neutron to explain the neutron lifetime anomaly, and (2) a framework of DM coupled to quarks through a vector current portal. In the neutron dark decay model a NS can have a substantial DM population, so that the DM capture rate can reach the geometric limit through DM self-interactions even if the DM-neutron scattering cross section is tiny. We find NS heating to have greater sensitivity than multi-pion signatures in large underground detectors for the neutron dark decay model, and sub-GeV gamma-ray signatures for the quark vector portal model.

Dark sector origin of the KOTO and MiniBooNE anomalies

We present a dark sector model that reproduces the KOTO, MiniBooNE and muon anomalous magnetic moment anomalies. The dark sector is comprised of a light scalar singlet $S$ that has a large coupling to a slightly heavier sterile neutrino that mixes with the active neutrinos. The scalar couples to standard model fermions via Yukawa couplings, and to photons via a higher-dimensional coupling. The KOTO signal is a result of the flavor-changing penguin process $K_L \to π^0 S$ followed by the decay of $S$ to neutrinos. The sterile neutrino produced in neutrino-nucleus scattering at MiniBooNE decays to an active neutrino and $S$, which decays electromagnetically and creates an event excess at low energies.

Nonstandard neutrino interactions at COHERENT, DUNE, T2HK and LHC

We study how nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSI) may be probed by a combination of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering, neutrino oscillation and collider data, from COHERENT, DUNE, T2HK and the high-luminosity (HL) LHC. We focus on NSI induced by a new flavored gauge boson $Z'$ in a generic anomaly-free ultraviolet-complete model. For $Z'$ masses above 10 GeV, the HL-LHC has the best sensitivity regardless of the flavor structure of the model. For masses between 0.01 GeV-10 GeV, current LHCb data and future COHERENT data have the best sensitivity unless the $Z'$ couplings to the first and second generation leptons are suppressed, in which case DUNE and T2HK have the best sensitivity. For $Z'$ masses between about 5 MeV-20 MeV, DUNE and T2HK have the best sensitivity. We also show how joint analyses of COHERENT and LHC data may constrain such models.

Annihilation signatures of neutron dark decay models in neutron oscillation and proton decay searches

We point out that two models that reconcile the neutron lifetime anomaly via dark decays of the neutron, also predict dark matter-neutron ($\barχ-n$) annihilation that may be observable in neutron-antineutron oscillation and proton decay searches at Super-Kamiokande, Hyper-Kamiokande and DUNE. We study signatures of $\barχn\to γπ^0$ (or multi-$π^0$) and $\barχn\to ϕγπ^0$ (or $ϕ+$multi-$π^0$), where $ϕ$ is an almost massless boson in one of the two models.

Neutrino scattering and B anomalies from hidden sector portals

We examine current constraints on and the future sensitivity to the strength of couplings between quarks and neutrinos in the presence of a form factor generated from loop effects of hidden sector particles that interact with quarks via new interactions. We consider models associated with either vector or scalar interactions of quarks and leptons generated by hidden sector dynamics. We study constraints on these models using data from coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering and solar neutrino experiments and demonstrate how these new interactions may be discovered by utilizing the recoil spectra. We show that our framework can be naturally extended to explain the lepton universality violating neutral current B decay anomalies, and that in a model framework the constraints from neutrino scattering can have implications for these anomalies.

MiniBooNE, MINOS+ and IceCube data imply a baroque neutrino sector

The 4.8$σ$ anomaly in MiniBooNE data cannot be reconciled with MINOS+ and IceCube data within the vanilla framework of neutrino oscillations involving an eV-mass sterile neutrino. We show that an apparently consistent picture can be drawn if charged-current and neutral-current nonstandard neutrino interactions are at work in the 3+1 neutrino scheme. It appears that either the neutrino sector is more elaborate than usually envisioned, or one or more datasets needs revision.

Breaking flavor democracy with symmetric perturbations

Flavor democracy broken in the fermion mass matrix by means of small perturbations can give rise to hierarchical fermion masses. We study the breaking of the $S^L_3 \times S^R_3$ symmetry associated with democratic mass matrices to a smaller exchange symmetry $S^L_2 \times S^R_2$ in the charged lepton, up and down quark sectors. An additional breaking of the $S^L_2 \times S^R_2$ symmetry is necessary for the down quark mass matrix, which yields arbitrary perturbations in that sector. On the other hand, we require the neutrino mass matrix to be diagonal at the leading order, with the perturbations left arbitrary due to the absence of any guiding symmetry. We show that the interplay between these two kinds of perturbations reproduces the quark and lepton mass and mixing observables for either hierarchy of neutrino masses.

Searching for light from a dark matter clump

The DAMPE experiment has recently reported an electron spectrum that can be explained by dark matter annihilation into charged lepton pairs in a nearby dark matter clump. The accompanying bremsstrahlung may yield a gamma-ray excess with a known spectral shape that extends over an angular scale of $O(10^\circ)$. We show that such an excess is not present in Fermi-LAT data.

Model-independent constraints on dark matter annihilation in dwarf spheroidal galaxies

We present a general, model-independent formalism for determining bounds on the production of photons in dwarf spheroidal galaxies via dark matter annihilation, applicable to any set of assumptions about dark matter particle physics or astrophysics. As an illustration, we analyze gamma-ray data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope to constrain a variety of nonstandard dark matter models, several of which have not previously been studied in the context of dwarf galaxy searches.

New light mediators for the $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ puzzles

The measurements of $R_{K}$ and $R_K^{*}$ provide hints for the violation of lepton universality. However, it is generally difficult to explain the $R_{K^*}$ measurement in the low $q^2$ range, $0.045 \le q^2 \le 1.1$ GeV$^2$. Light mediators offer a solution by making the Wilson coefficients $q^2$ dependent. We check if new lepton nonuniversal interactions mediated by a scalar ($S$) or vector particle ($Z^\prime$) of mass between $10-200$ MeV can reproduce the data. We find that a 25 MeV $Z^\prime$ with a $q^2$-dependent $b-s$ coupling and that couples to the electron but not the muon can explain all three anomalies in conjunction with other measurements. A similar 25 MeV $S$ provides a good fit to all relevant data except $R_{K^*}$ in the low $q^2$ bin. A 25 MeV $Z^\prime$ with a $q^2$-dependent $b-s$ coupling and that couples to the muon but not the electron provides a good fit to the combination of the $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ data, but does not fit $R_{K^*}$ in the low $q^2$ bin well.
