Construction of multi-bubble blow-up solutions to the $L^2$-critical half-wave equation

This paper concerns the bubbling phenomena for the $L^2$-critical half-wave equation in dimension one. Given arbitrarily finitely many distinct singularities, we construct blow-up solutions concentrating exactly at these singularities. This provides the first examples of multi-bubble solutions for the half-wave equation. In particular, the solutions exhibit the mass quantization property. Our proof strategy draws upon the modulation method in \cite{K-L-R} for the single-bubble case, and explores the localization techniques in \cite{CSZ21,RSZ21} for bubbling solutions to nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS). However, unlike the single-bubble or NLS cases, different bubbles exhibit the strongest interactions in dimension one. In order to get sharp estimates to control strong interactions, as well as nonlocal effects on localization functions, we utilize the Carlderón estimate and the integration representation formula of the half-wave operator, and find that there exists a narrow room between the orders $|t|^{2+}$ and $|t|^{3-}$ for the remainder in the geometrical decomposition. Based on this, a novel bootstrap scheme is introduced to address the multi-bubble non-local structure.

Stability of degree-2 Rossby-Haurwitz waves

Rossby-Haurwitz (RH) waves are important explicit solutions of the incompressible Euler equation on a two-dimensional rotating sphere. In this paper, we prove the orbital stability of degree-2 RH waves, which confirms a conjecture proposed by A. Constantin and P. Germain in [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 245, 587-644, 2022]. The proofs are based on a variational approach, with the main challenge being to establish suitable variational characterizations for the solutions under consideration. In this process, the set of rearrangements of a fixed function plays a vital role. We also apply our approach to the stability analysis of degree-1 RH waves, Arnold-type flows, and zonal flows with monotone absolute vorticity.

Slow traveling-wave solutions for the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation

In this paper, we systematically study the existence, asymptotic behaviors, uniqueness, and nonlinear orbital stability of traveling-wave solutions with small propagation speeds for the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (gSQG) equation. Firstly we obtain the existence of a new family of global solutions via the variational method. Secondly we show the uniqueness of maximizers under our variational setting. Thirdly by using the variational framework, the uniqueness of maximizers and a concentration-compactness principle we establish some stability theorems. Moreover, after a suitable transformation, these solutions constitute the desingularization of traveling point vortex pairs.

On the existence of vortex-wave systems to inviscid gSQG equation

We study the existence of different vortex-wave systems for inviscid gSQG flow, where the total circulation are produced by point vortices and vortices with compact support. To overcome several difficulties caused by the singular formulation and infinite kinetic energy, we introduce a modified reduction method. Several asymptotic properties of the system are also given.

Structure of Green's function of elliptic equations and helical vortex patches for 3D incompressible Euler equations

We develop a new structure of the Green's function of a second-order elliptic operator in divergence form in a 2D bounded domain. Based on this structure and the theory of rearrangement of functions, we construct concentrated traveling-rotating helical vortex patches to 3D incompressible Euler equations in an infinite pipe. By solving an equation for vorticity \begin{equation*} w=\frac{1}{\varepsilon^2}f_\varepsilon\left(\mathcal{G}_{K_H}w-\fracα{2}|x|^2|\ln\varepsilon|\right) \ \ \text{in}\ Ω\end{equation*} for small $ \varepsilon>0 $ and considering a certain maximization problem for the vorticity, where $ \mathcal{G}_{K_H} $ is the inverse of an elliptic operator $ \mathcal{L}_{K_H} $ in divergence form, we get the existence of a family of concentrated helical vortex patches, which tend asymptotically to a singular helical vortex filament evolved by the binormal curvature flow. We also get nonlinear orbital stability of the maximizers in the variational problem under $ L^p $ perturbation when $ p\geq 2. $

Local uniqueness of vortices for 2D steady Euler flow in a bounded domain

We study the 2D Euler equation in a bounded simply-connected domain, and establish the local uniqueness of flow whose stream function $ψ_\varepsilon$ satisfies \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -\varepsilon^2Δψ_\varepsilon=\sum\limits_{i=1}^k \mathbf1_{B_δ(z_{0,i})}(ψ_\varepsilon-μ_{\varepsilon,i})_+^γ,\ \ \ & \text{in} \ Ω, ψ_\varepsilon=0,\ \ \ & \text{on} \ Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} with $\varepsilon\to 0^+$ the scale parameter of vortices, $γ\in(0,\infty)$, $Ω\subset \mathbb R^2$ a bounded simply connected Lipschitz domain, $z_{0,i}\inΩ$ the limiting location of $i^{\text{th}}$ vortex, and $μ_{\varepsilon,i}$ the flux constants unprescribed. Our proof is achieved by a detailed description of asymptotic behavior for $ψ_\varepsilon$ and Pohozaev identity technique. For $k=1$, we prove the nonlinear stability of corresponding vorticity in $L^p$ norm, provided $z_{0,1}$ is a non-degenerate minimum point of Robin function. This stability result can be generalized to the case $k\ge 2$, and $(z_{0,1},\cdots,z_{0,k})\in Ω^k$ being a non-degenerate minimum point of the Kirchhoff-Routh function.

Desingularization of 3D steady Euler equation with helical symmetry

In this paper, we study desingularization of steady solutions of 3D incompressible Euler equation with helical symmetry in a general helical domain. We construct a family of steady Euler flows with helical symmetry, such that the associated vorticities tend asymptotically to a helical vortex filament. The solutions are obtained by solving a semilinear elliptic problem in divergence form with a parameter. By using the stream-function method, we show the existence and asymptotic behavior of ground state solutions concentrating near a single point as the parameter $ \varepsilon\to 0 $. Qualitative properties of those solutions are also discussed.

Helical vortices with small cross-section for 3D incompressible Euler equation

In this article, we construct traveling-rotating helical vortices with small cross-section to the 3D incompressible Euler equations in an infinite pipe, which tend asymptotically to singular helical vortex filament evolved by the binormal curvature flow. The construction is based on studying a general semilinear elliptic problem in divergence form \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -\varepsilon^2\text{div}(K(x)\nabla u)= (u-q|\ln\varepsilon|)^{p}_+,\ \ &x\in Ω,\\ u=0,\ \ &x\in\partial Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} for small values of $ \varepsilon. $ Helical vortex solutions concentrating near several helical filaments with polygonal symmetry are also constructed.

Traveling vortex pairs for 2D Boussinesq equations

In this paper, we study the existence and asymptotic properties of the traveling vortex pairs for the two-dimensional inviscid incompressible Boussinesq equations. We construct a family of traveling vorticity pairs, which constitutes the de-singularization of a pair of point vortices with equal intensity but opposite sign. Using the improved vorticity method, we also give limiting position of the supports of vorticities.

Co-rotating and traveling vortex sheets for the 2D incompressible Euler equation

We construct co-rotating and traveling vortex sheets for 2D incompressible Euler equation, which are supported on several small closed curves. These examples represent a new type of vortex sheet solutions other than two known classes. The construction is based on Birkhoff-Rott operator, and accomplished by using implicit function theorem at point vortex solutions with suitably chosen function spaces.

Existence of stationary vortex sheets for the 2D Euler equation

We investigate a steady planar flow of an ideal fluid in a (bounded or unbounded) domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$. Let $κ_i\not=0$, $i=1,\ldots, m$, be $m$ arbitrary fixed constants. For any given non-degenerate critical point $\mathbf{x}_0=(x_{0,1},\ldots,x_{0,m})$ of the Kirchhoff-Routh function defined on $Ω^m$ corresponding to $(κ_1,\ldots, κ_m)$, we construct a family of stationary planar flows with vortex sheets that have large vorticity amplitude and are perturbations of small circles centered near $x_i$, $i=1,\ldots,m$. The proof is accomplished via the implicit function theorem with suitable choice of function spaces. This seems to be the first nontrivial result on the existence of stationary vortex sheets in domains.

On uniqueness of multi-bubble blow-up solutions and multi-solitons to $L^2$-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We are concerned with the focusing $L^2$-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equations in $\mathbb{R}^d$ for $d=1,2$. The uniqueness is proved for a large energy class of multi-bubble blow-up solutions, which converge to a sum of $K$ pseudo-conformal blow-up solutions particularly with low rate $(T-t)^{0+}$, as $t\to T$, $1\leq K<\infty$. Moreover, we also prove the uniqueness in the energy class of multi-solitons which converge to a sum of $K$ solitary waves with convergence rate $(1/t)^{2+}$, as $t\to \infty$. The uniqueness class is further enlarged to contain the multi-solitons with even lower convergence rate $(1/t)^{\frac 12+}$ in the pseudo-conformal space. The proof is mainly based on the pseudo-conformal invariance and the monotonicity properties of several functionals adapted to the multi-bubble case, the latter is crucial towards the upgradation of the convergence to the fast exponential decay rate.

Kármán vortex street for the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation

We are concerned with the existence of periodic travelling-wave solutions for the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (gSQG) equation(including incompressible Euler equation), known as von Kármán vortex street. These solutions are of $C^1$ type, and are obtained by studying a semilinear problem on an infinite strip whose width equals to the period. By a variational characterization of solutions, we also show the relationship between vortex size, travelling speed and street structure. In particular, the vortices with positive and negative intensity have equal or unequal scaling size in our construction, which constitutes the regularization for Kármán point vortex street.

By using the variational method, we provide some new families of global classical solutions for to the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation. These solutions mainly consist of rotating solutions and travelling-wave solutions.

Existence of co-rotating and travelling vortex patches with doubly connected components for active scalar equations

By applying implicit function theorem on contour dynamics, we prove the existence of co-rotating and travelling patch solutions for both Euler and the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation. The solutions obtained constitute a desingularization of points vortices when the size of patch support vanishes. In particular, solutions constructed in this paper consist of doubly connected components, which is essentially different from all known results.

Existence and stability of smooth traveling circular pairs for the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation

In this paper, we construct smooth travelling counter-rotating vortex pairs with circular supports for the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation. These vortex pairs are analogues of the Lamb dipoles for the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equation. The solutions are obtained by maximization of the energy over some appropriate classes of admissible functions. We establish the uniqueness of maximizers and compactness of maximizing sequences in our variational setting. Using these facts, we further prove the orbital stability of the circular vortex pairs for the gSQG equation.

Global solutions for the generalized SQG equation and rearrangements

In this paper, we study the existence of rotating and traveling-wave solutions for the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (gSQG) equation. The solutions are obtained by maximization of the energy over the set of rearrangements of a fixed function. The rotating solutions take the form of co-rotating vortices with $N$-fold symmetry. The traveling-wave solutions take the form of translating vortex pairs. Moreover, these solutions constitute the desingularization of co-rotating $N$ point vortices and counter-rotating pairs. Some other quantitative properties are also established.
