On the standing waves for the X-ray free electron laser Schrödinger equation

In this paper, we are concerned with the standing waves for the following nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$i\partial_{t}ψ=-Δψ+b^2(x_1^2+x_2^2)ψ+\frac{λ_1}{|x|}ψ+ λ_2(|\cdot|^{-1}\ast |ψ|^2)ψ- λ_3|ψ|^p ψ,~~~ (t,x)\in \mathbb{R}^+\times \mathbb{R}^3,$$ where $0<p<4$. We mainly study the existence and stability/instability properties of standing waves for this equation, in two cases: the first one is that no magnetic potential is involved, (i.e. $b=0$ in the equation) and the second one is that $b\neq 0$. To be precise, in the first case, by considering a minimization problem on a suitable Pohozaev manifold we prove the existence of ground states, and show further that all ground state standing waves are strongly unstable by blow-up in finite time. Moreover, by making use of the ideas of their proofs, we are able to prove the existence and instability of normalized solutions, whose proofs seem to be new, compared with the studies of normalized solutions in the existing literature. In the second case, the situation is more difficult to be treated, due to the additional term of the partial harmonic potential. We manage to prove the existence of stable standing waves for $p\in (0,4)$ and with some assumptions on the coefficients, where solutions are obtained as global minimizers if $p\in (0,\frac{4}{3}]$, and as local minimizers if $p\in [\frac{4}{3}, 4)$. In the mass-critical and supercritical cases $p\in [\frac{4}{3}, 4)$, we establish the variational characterization of the ground states on a suitable manifold which is different from the one neither of the Nehari type nor of the Pohozaev type, and then prove the existence of ground states. Finally under some assumptions on $ω$ and $p$, we prove that the ground state standing waves are strongly unstable.

Traveling vortex pairs for 2D incompressible Euler equations

In this paper, we study desingularization of vortices for the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations in the full plane. We construct a family of steady vortex pairs for the Euler equations with a general vorticity function, which constitutes a desingularization of a pair of point vortices with equal magnitude and opposite signs. The results are obtained by using an improved vorticity method.

On the steady axisymmetric vortex rings for 3-D incompressible Euler flows

In this paper, we study nonlinear desingularization of steady vortex rings of three-dimensional incompressible Euler flows. We construct a family of steady vortex rings (with and without swirl) which constitutes a desingularization of the classical circular vortex filament in $\mathbb{R}^3$. The construction is based on a study of solutions to the similinear elliptic problem \begin{equation*} -\frac{1}{r}\frac{\partial}{\partial r}\Big(\frac{1}{r}\frac{\partialψ^\varepsilon}{\partial r}\Big)-\frac{1}{r^2}\frac{\partial^2ψ^\varepsilon}{\partial z^2}=\frac{1}{\varepsilon^2}\left(g(ψ^\varepsilon)+\frac{f(ψ^\varepsilon)}{r^2}\right), \end{equation*} where $f$ and $g$ are two given functions of the Stokes stream function $ψ^\varepsilon$, and $\varepsilon>0$ is a small parameter.

Multi-soliton dynamics in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a nontrival potential $V_\varepsilon(x)$. In particular, we consider the case where the initial data is close to a superposition of $k$ solitons with prescribed phase and location, and investigate the evolution of the Schrödinger system. We prove that over a large time interval with the maximum time tending to infinity, all $k$ solitons will maintain the shape, and the solitons dynamics can be regarded as an approximation of $k$ particles moving in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with their accelerations dominated by $\nabla V_\varepsilon$, provided the barycenters of these solitons do not coincide.

Liouville type theorems for fractional and higher-order fractional Hénon-Lane-Emden systems

In this paper, we first establish decay estimates for the fractional and higher-order fractional Hénon-Lane-Emden systems by using a nonlocal average and integral estimates, which deduce a result of non-existence. Next, we apply the method of scaling spheres introduced in \cite{DQ2} to derive a Liouville type theorem. We also construct an interesting example on super $\fracα{2}$-harmonic functions (Proposition 1.2).

On desingularization of steady vortex in the lake equations

We constructed a family of steady vortex solutions for the lake equations with general vorticity function, which constitute a desingularization of a singular vortex. The precise localization of the asymptotic singular vortex is shown to be the deepest position of the lake. We also study global nonlinear stability for these solutions. Some qualitative and asymptotic properties are also established.

The number of positive solutions to the Brezis-Nirenberg problem

In this paper we are concerned with the well-known Brezis-Nirenberg problem \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δu= u^{\frac{N+2}{N-2}}+\varepsilon u, &{\text{in}~Ω},\\ u>0, &{\text{in}~Ω},\\ u=0, &{\text{on}~\partial Ω}. \end{cases} \end{equation*} The existence of multi-peak solutions to the above problem for small $\varepsilon>0$ was obtained by Musso and Pistoia. However, the uniqueness or the exact number of positive solutions to the above problem is still unknown. Here we focus on the local uniqueness of multi-peak solutions and the exact number of positive solutions to the above problem for small $\varepsilon>0$. By using various local Pohozaev identities and blow-up analysis, we first detect the relationship between the profile of the blow-up solutions and the Green's function of the domain $Ω$ and then obtain a type of local uniqueness results of blow-up solutions. At last we give a description of the number of positive solutions for small positive $\varepsilon$, which depends also on the Green's function.

Existence and symmetry of solutions to 2-D Schrödinger-Newton equations

In this paper, we consider the following 2-D Schrödinger-Newton equations \begin{eqnarray*} -Δu+a(x)u+\fracγ{2π}\left(\log(|\cdot|)*|u|^p\right){|u|}^{p-2}u=b{|u|}^{q-2}u \qquad \text{in} \,\,\, \mathbb{R}^{2}, \end{eqnarray*} where $a\in C(\mathbb{R}^{2})$ is a $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$-periodic function with $\inf_{\mathbb{R}^{2}}a>0$, $γ>0$, $b\geq0$, $p\geq2$ and $q\geq 2$. By using ideas from \cite{CW,DW,Stubbe}, under mild assumptions, we obtain existence of ground state solutions and mountain pass solutions to the above equations for $p\geq2$ and $q\geq2p-2$ via variational methods. The auxiliary functional $J_{1}$ plays a key role in the cases $p\geq3$. We also prove the radial symmetry of positive solutions (up to translations) for $p\geq2$ and $q\geq 2$. The corresponding results for planar Schrödinger-Poisson systems will also be obtained. Our theorems extend the results in \cite{CW,DW} from $p=2$ and $b=1$ to general $p\geq2$ and $b\geq0$.

Standing waves with prescribed mass for the Schrödinger equations with van der Waals type potentials

\begin{abstract} In this paper, we focus on the standing waves with prescribed mass for the Schrödinger equations with van der Waals type potentials, that is, two-body potentials with different width. This leads to the study of the following nonlocal elliptic equation \begin{equation*}\label{1} -Δu=λu+μ(|x|^{-α}\ast|u|^{2})u+(|x|^{-β}\ast|u|^{2})u,\ \ x\in \R^{N} \end{equation*} under the normalized constraint \[\int_{{\mathbb{R}^N}} {{u}^2}=c>0,\] where $N\geq 3$, $μ\!>\!0$, $α$, $β\in (0,N)$, and the frequency $λ\in \mathbb{R}$ is unknown and appears as Lagrange multiplier. Compared with the well studied case $α=β$, the solution set of the above problem with different width of two body potentials $α\neqβ$ is much richer. Under different assumptions on $c$, $α$ and $β$, we prove several existence, multiplicity and asymptotic behavior of solutions to the above problem. In addition, the stability of the corresponding standing waves for the related time-dependent problem is discussed.

Desingularization of steady vortex of perturbation type in the lake equations

In this paper, we study the desingularization of steady lake model of perturbation type with general nonlinearity f. Using the modified vorticity method, we construct a family of steady solutions with vanishing circulation, which constitute a desingularization of a singular vortex. The localization of the singular vortex is determined only by the vanishing rate of the circulation. Some qualitative and asymptotic properties are also established.

Steady vortex flows of perturbation type in a planar bounded domain

In this paper, we investigate steady Euler flows in a two-dimensional bounded domain. By an adaption of the vorticity method, we prove that for any nonconstant harmonic function $q$, which corresponds to a nontrivial irrotational flow, there exists a family of steady Euler flows with small circulation in which the vorticity is continuous and supported in a small neighborhood of the set of maximum points of $q$ near the boundary, and the corresponding stream function satisfies a semilinear elliptic equation with a given profile function. Moreover, if $q$ has $k$ isolated maximum points $\{\bar{x}_1,\cdot\cdot\cdot,\bar{x}_k\}$ on the boundary, we show that there exists a family of steady Euler flows whose vorticity is continuous and supported in $k$ disjoint regions of small diameter, and each of them is contained in a small neighborhood of $\bar{x}_i$, and in each of these small regions the stream function satisfies a semilinear elliptic equation with a given profile function.

Asymptotic behavior of global vortex rings

In this paper, we are concerned with nonlinear desingularization of steady vortex rings in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with given general nonlinearity $f$. Using the improved vorticity method, we construct a family of steady vortex rings which constitute a desingularization of the classical circular vortex filament in the whole space. The requirements on $f$ are very general, and $f$ may have a simple discontinuity at the origin. Some qualitative and asymptotic properties are also established.

Desingularization of vortices for 2D steady Euler flows via the vorticity method

In this paper, we consider steady Euler flows in a planar bounded domain in which the vorticity is sharply concentrated in a finite number of disjoint regions of small diameter. Such flows are closely related to the point vortex model and can be regarded as desingularization of point vortices. By an adaption of the vorticity method, we construct a family of steady Euler flows in which the vorticity is concentrated near a global minimum point of the Robin function of the domain, and the corresponding stream function satisfies a semilinear elliptic equation with a given profile function. Furthermore, for any given isolated minimum point $(\bar{x}_1,\cdot\cdot\cdot,\bar{x}_k)$ of the Kirchhoff-Routh function of the domain, we prove that there exists a family of steady Euler flows whose vorticity is supported in $k$ small regions near $\bar{x}_i$, and near each $\bar{x}_i$ the corresponding stream function satisfies a semilinear elliptic equation with a given profile function.

Desingularization of vortex rings in 3 dimensional Euler flows: with swirl

We study desingularization of steady vortex rings in three-dimensional axisymmetric incompressible Euler fluids with swirl. Using the variational method, we construct a two-parameter family of steady vortex rings, which constitute a desingularization of the classical circular vortex filament, in several kinds of domains. The precise localization of the asymptotic singular vortex filament is shown to depend on the circulation and the velocity at far fields of the vortex ring and the geometry of the domains. We also discuss other qualitative and asymptotic properties of these vortices.

Super poly-harmonic properties, Liouville theorems and classification of nonnegative solutions to equations involving higher-order fractional Laplacians

In this paper, we are concerned with equations \eqref{PDE} involving higher-order fractional Laplacians. By introducing a new approach, we prove the super poly-harmonic properties for nonnegative solutions to \eqref{PDE} (Theorem \ref{Thm0}). Our theorem seems to be the first result on this problem. As a consequence, we derive many important applications of the super poly-harmonic properties. For instance, we establish Liouville theorems, integral representation formula and classification results for nonnegative solutions to fractional higher-order equations \eqref{PDE} with general nonlinearities $f(x,u,Du,\cdots)$ including conformally invariant and odd order cases. In particular, our results completely improve the classification results for third order equations in Dai and Qin \cite{DQ1} by removing the assumptions on integrability. We also derive a characterization for $α$-harmonic functions via averages in the appendix.

Existence of steady symmetric vortex patch in a disk

In this paper we construct a family of steady symmetric vortex patches for the incompressible Euler equations in an open disk. The result is obtained by studying a variational problem in which the kinetic energy of the fluid is maximized subject to some appropriate constraints for the vorticity. Moreover, we show that these vortex patches shrink to a given minimum point of the corresponding Kirchhoff-Routh function as the vorticity strength parameter goes to infinity.

Rotating vortex patches for the planar Euler equations in a disk

We construct a family of rotating vortex patches with fixed angular velocity for the two-dimensional Euler equations in a disk. As the vorticity strength goes to infinity, the limit of these rotating vortex patches is a rotating point vortex whose motion is described by the Kirchhoff-Routh equation. The construction is performed by solving a variational problem for the vorticity which is based on an adaption of Arnold's variational principle. We also prove nonlinear orbital stability of the set of maximizers in the variational problem under $L^p$ perturbation when $p\in[{3}/{2},+\infty)$.

Desingularization of vortex rings in 3 dimensional Euler flows

In this paper, we are concerned with nonlinear desingularization of steady vortex rings of three-dimensional incompressible Euler fluids. We focus on the case when the vorticity function has a simple discontinuity, which corresponding to a jump in vorticity at the boundary of the cross-section of the vortex ring. Using the vorticity method, we construct a family of steady vortex rings which constitute a desingularization of the classical circular vortex filament in several kinds of domains. The precise localization of the asymptotic singular vortex filament is proved to depend on the circulation and the velocity at far fields of the vortex ring. Some qualitative and asymptotic properties are also established. Comparing with known results, our work actually enriches and advances the study on this problem.
