Dynamics of Open Quantum Systems with Initial System-Environment Correlations via Stochastic Unravelings

In standard treatments of open quantum systems, the reduced dynamics is described starting from the assumption that the system and the environment are initially uncorrelated. This assumption, however, is not always guaranteed in realistic scenarios and several theoretical approaches to characterize initially correlated dynamics have been introduced. For the uncorrelated scenario, stochastic unravelings are a powerful tool to simulate the dynamics, but so far they have not been used in the most general case in which correlations are initially present. In our work, we employ the bath positive (B+) or one-sided positive decomposition (OPD) formalism as a starting point to generalize stochastic unraveling in the presence of initial correlations. Noticeably, our approach doesn't depend on the particular unraveling technique, but holds for both piecewise deterministic and diffusive unravelings. This generalization allows not only for more powerful simulations for the reduced dynamics, but also for a deeper theoretical understanding of open system dynamics.

A universal constraint for relaxation rates for quantum Markov generators: complete positivity and beyond

Relaxation rates are key characteristics of quantum processes, as they determine how quickly a quantum system thermalizes, equilibrates, decoheres, and dissipates. While they play a crucial role in theoretical analyses, relaxation rates are also often directly accessible through experimental measurements. Recently, it was shown that for quantum processes governed by Markovian semigroups, the relaxation rates satisfy a universal constraint: the maximal rate is upper-bounded by the sum of all rates divided by the dimension of the Hilbert space. This bound, initially conjectured a few years ago, was only recently proven using classical Lyapunov theory. In this work, we present a new, purely algebraic proof of this constraint. Remarkably, our approach is not only more direct but also allows for a natural generalization beyond completely positive semigroups. We show that complete positivity can be relaxed to 2-positivity without affecting the validity of the constraint. This reveals that the bound is more subtle than previously understood: 2-positivity is necessary, but even when further relaxed to Schwarz maps, a slightly weaker -- yet still non-trivial -- universal constraint still holds. Finally, we explore the connection between these bounds and the number of steady states in quantum processes, uncovering a deeper structure underlying their behavior.

Universal Bound on the Eigenvalues of 2-Positive Trace-Preserving Maps

We prove an upper bound on the trace of any 2-positive, trace-preserving map in terms of its smallest eigenvalue. We show that this spectral bound is tight, and that 2-positivity is necessary for this inequality to hold in general. Moreover, we use this to infer a similar bound for generators of one-parameter semigroups of 2-positive trace-preserving maps. With this approach we generalize known results for completely positive trace-preserving dynamics while providing a significantly simpler proof that is entirely algebraic.

Spectral delineation of Markov Generators: Classical vs Quantum

The celebrated theorem of Perron and Frobenius implies that spectra of classical Markov operators, represented by stochastic matrices, are restricted to the unit disk. This property holds also for spectra of quantum stochastic maps (quantum channels), which describe quantum Markovian evolution in discrete time. Moreover, the spectra of stochastic $N \times N$ matrices are additionally restricted to a subset of the unit disk, called Karpeleviuc region, the shape of which depends on $N$. We address the question of whether the spectra of generators, which induce Markovian evolution in continuous time, can be bound in a similar way. We propose a rescaling that allows us to answer this question affirmatively. The eigenvalues of the rescaled classical generators are confined to the modified Karpeleviuc regions, whereas the eigenvalues of the rescaled quantum generators fill the entire unit disk.

A mirrored pair of optimal non-decomposable entanglement witnesses for two qudits does exist

Two approaches can be utilized to handle the separability problem, finding out whether a given bipartite qudit state is separable or not: a direct procedure on the state space or the effective tool of entanglement witnesses (EWs). This contribution studies the structure of EWs. Exploiting the very concept of mirrored EWs, increasing the detection power, we show, in contrast to the conjecture in a recent paper (Sci. Rep. {\bf 13}, 10733 (2023)), there exist pairs of optimal EWs, which are both non-decomposible, i.e. can detect bound/PPT-entangled states in an optimal way. Since we show that the structure also extends to higher dimensions, our results reveal a further structure of entanglement witnesses.

A class of entanglement witnesses and a realignment-like criterion

We present a multi-parameter family of positive maps between spaces of differing dimensions. This framework facilitates the construction of Entanglement Witnesses (EWs) specifically designed for systems living in $d_1 \times d_2$ dimensions. A sufficient condition for positivity is presented. Interestingly, it is shown that all EWs constructed this way are equivalent to a single realignment-like criterion which for $d_1 \neq d_2$ is in general stronger than the original realignment criterion. We illustrate effectiveness of this criterion considering examples of Positive Partial Transpose (PPT) entangled states in $3 \times 3$ and $3 \times 4$ dimensions.

Quantum versus classical $P$-divisibility

$P$-divisibility is a central concept in both classical and quantum non-Markovian processes; in particular, it is strictly related to the notion of information backflow. When restricted to a fixed commutative algebra generated by a complete set of orthogonal projections, any quantum dynamics naturally provides a classical stochastic process. It is indeed well known that a quantum generator gives rise to a $P$-divisible quantum dynamics if and only if all its possible classical reductions give rise to divisible classical stochastic processes. Yet, this property does not hold if one operates a classical reduction of the quantum dynamical maps instead of their generators: as an example, for a unitary dynamics, $P$-divisibility of its classical reduction is inevitably lost, which thus exhibits information backflow. Instead, for some important classes of purely dissipative qubit evolutions, quantum $P$-divisibility always implies classical $P$-divisibility and thus lack of information backflow both in the quantum and classical scenarios. On the contrary, for a wide class of orthogonally covariant qubit dynamics, we show that loss of classical $P$-divisibility can originate from the classical reduction of a purely dissipative $P$-divisible quantum dynamics as in the unitary case. Moreover, such an effect can be interpreted in terms of information backflow, the information coming in being stored in the coherences of the time-evolving quantum state.

Eventually entanglement breaking divisible quantum dynamics

It is shown that a large class of quantum dynamical maps on complex matrix algebras governed by time-local Master Equations tend to become entanglement breaking in the course of time. Such situation seems to be generic for quantum evolution and in particular, completely positive dynamical semigroups with a unique faithful stationary state enjoy this property. Inspired by this observation, we propose a new concept of eventually entanglement breaking divisible (eEB-divisible) dynamics. A dynamical map is eEB-divisible if any propagator becomes entanglement breaking in finite time. It turns out that eEB-divisibility is quite general and holds for a large class of quantum evolutions.

Universal bound on the relaxation rates for quantum Markovian dynamics

Relaxation rates provide important characteristics both for classical and quantum processes. Essentially they control how fast the system thermalizes, equilibrates, {decoheres, and/or dissipates}. Moreover, very often they are directly accessible to be measured in the laboratory and hence they define key physical properties of the system. Experimentally measured relaxation rates can be used to test validity of a particular theoretical model. Here we analyze a fundamental question: {\em does quantum mechanics provide any nontrivial constraint for relaxation rates?} We prove the conjecture formulated a few years ago that any quantum channel implies that a maximal rate is bounded from above by the sum of all the relaxation rates divided by the dimension of the Hilbert space. It should be stressed that this constraint is universal (it is valid for all quantum systems with finite number of energy levels) and it is tight (cannot be improved). In addition, the constraint plays an analogous role to the seminal Bell inequalities and the well known Leggett-Garg inequalities (sometimes called temporal Bell inequalities). Violations of Bell inequalities rule out local hidden variable models, and violations of Leggett-Garg inequalities rule out macrorealism. Similarly, violations of the bound rule out completely positive-divisible evolution.

Double or nothing: a Kolmogorov extension theorem for multitime (bi)probabilities in quantum mechanics

The multitime probability distributions obtained by repeatedly probing a quantum system via the measurement of an observable generally violate Kolmogorov's consistency property. Therefore, one cannot interpret such distributions as the result of the sampling of a single trajectory. We show that, nonetheless, they do result from the sampling of one pair of trajectories. In this sense, rather than give up on trajectories, quantum mechanics requires to double down on them. To this purpose, we prove a generalization of the Kolmogorov extension theorem that applies to families of complex-valued bi-probability distributions (that is, defined on pairs of elements of the original sample spaces), and we employ this result in the quantum mechanical scenario. We also discuss the relation of our results with the quantum comb formalism.

Uncertainty relations based on state-dependent norm of commutator

We introduce two uncertainty relations based on the state-dependent norm of commutators, utilizing generalizations of the Böttcher-Wenzel inequality. The first relation is mathematically proven, while the second, tighter relation is strongly supported by numerical evidence. Both relations surpass the conventional Robertson and Schrödinger bounds, particularly as the quantum state becomes increasingly mixed. This reveals a previously undetected complementarity of quantum uncertainty, stemming from the non-commutativity of observables. We also compare our results with the Luo-Park uncertainty relation, demonstrating that our bounds can outperform especially for mutually unbiased observables.

Generalized Rate Operator Quantum Jumps via Realization-Dependent Transformations

The dynamics of open quantum systems is often solved by stochastic unravellings where the average over the state vector realizations reproduces the density matrix evolution. We focus on quantum jump descriptions based on the rate operator formalism. In addition to displaying and exploiting different equivalent ways of writing the master equation, we introduce state-dependent rate operator transformations within the framework of stochastic pure state realizations, allowing us to extend and generalize the previously developed formalism. As a consequence, this improves the controllability of the stochastic realizations and subsequently greatly benefits when searching for optimal simulation schemes to solve open system dynamics. At a fundamental level, intriguingly, our results show that it is possible to have positive unravellings -- without reverse quantum jumps and avoiding the use of auxiliary degrees freedom -- in a number of example cases even when the corresponding dynamical map breaks the property of P-divisibility, thus being in the strongly non-Markovian regime.

A class of Schwarz qubit maps with diagonal unitary and orthogonal symmetries

A class of unital qubit maps displaying diagonal unitary and orthogonal symmetries is analyzed. Such maps already found a lot applications in quantum information theory. We provide a complete characterization of this class of maps showing intricate relation between positivity, operator Schwarz inequality, and complete positivity. Finally, it is shown how to generalize the entire picture beyond unital case (so called generalized Schwarz maps). Interestingly, the first example of Schwarz but not completely positive map found by Choi belongs to our class. As a case study we provide a full characterization of Pauli maps. Our analysis leads to generalization of seminal Fujiwara-Algoet conditions for Pauli quantum channels.

Böttcher-Wenzel inequality for weighted Frobenius norms and its application to quantum physics

By employing a weighted Frobenius norm with a positive matrix $ω$, we introduce natural generalizations of the famous Böttcher-Wenzel (BW) inequality. Based on the combination of the weighted Frobenius norm $\|A\|_ω:= \sqrt{{\rm tr}(A^\ast A ω)}$ and the standard Frobenius norm $\|A\| := \sqrt{{\rm tr}(A^\ast A)}$, there are exactly five possible generalizations, labeled (i) through (v), for the bounds on the norms of the commutator $[A,B]:= AB - BA$. In this paper, we establish the tight bounds for cases (iii) and (v), and propose conjectures regarding the tight bounds for cases (i) and (ii). Additionally, the tight bound for case (iv) is derived as a corollary of case (i). All these bounds (i)-(v) serve as generalizations of the BW inequality. The conjectured bounds for cases (i) and (ii) (and thus also (iv)) are numerically supported for matrices up to size $n=15$. Proofs are provided for $n=2$ and certain special cases. Interestingly, we find applications of these bounds in quantum physics, particularly in the contexts of the uncertainty relation and open quantum dynamics.

Universal constraint for relaxation rates of semigroups of qubit Schwarz maps

Unital qubit Schwarz maps interpolate between positive and completely positive maps. It is shown that relaxation rates of qubit semigroups of unital maps enjoying Schwarz property satisfy the universal constraint which provides a modification of the corresponding constraint known for completely positive semigroups. As an illustration we consider two paradigmatic qubit semigroups: Pauli dynamical maps and phase covariant dynamics. This result has two interesting implications: it provides a universal constraint for the spectra of qubit Schwarz maps and gives rise to a necessary condition for a Schwarz qubit map to be Markovian.

Optimality of generalized Choi maps in $M_3$

A family of linear positive maps in the algebra of $3 \times 3$ complex matrices proposed recently in Bera et al. arXiv:2212.03807 is further analyzed. It provides a generalization of a seminal Choi nondecomposable extremal map in $M_3$. We investigate when generalized Choi maps are optimal, i.e. cannot be represented as a sum of positive and completely positive maps. This property is weaker than extremality, however, it turns out that it plays a key role in detecting quantum entanglement.

Optimizing positive maps in the matrix algebra $M_n$

We present an optimization procedure for a seminal class of positive maps $τ_{n,k}$ in the algebra of $n \times n$ complex matrices introduced and studied by Tanahasi and Tomiyama, Ando, Nakamura and Osaka. Recently, these maps were proved to be optimal whenever the greatest common divisor $GCD(n,k)=1$. We attain a general conjecture how to optimize a map $τ_{n,k}$ when $GCD(n,k)=2$ or 3. For $GCD(n,k)=2$, a series of analytical results are derived and for $GCD(n,k)=3$, we provide a suitable numerical analysis.
