Random Lindblad operators obeying detailed balance

We introduce different ensembles of random Lindblad operators $\cal L$, which satisfy quantum detailed balance condition with respect to the given stationary state $σ$ of size $N$, and investigate their spectral properties. Such operators are known as `Davies generators' and their eigenvalues are real; however, their spectral densities depend on $σ$. We propose different structured ensembles of random matrices, which allow us to tackle the problem analytically in the extreme cases of Davies generators corresponding to random $σ$ with a non-degenerate spectrum for the maximally mixed stationary state, $σ= \mathbf{1} /N$. Interestingly, in the latter case the density can be reasonably well approximated by integrating out the imaginary component of the spectral density characteristic to the ensemble of random unconstrained Lindblad operators. The case of asymptotic states with partially degenerated spectra is also addressed. Finally, we demonstrate that similar universal properties hold for the detailed balance-obeying Kolmogorov generators obtained by applying superdecoherence to an ensemble of random Davies generators. In this way we construct an ensemble of random classical generators with imposed detailed balance condition.

How many mutually unbiased bases are needed to detect bound entangled states?

From a practical perspective it is advantageous to develop methods that verify entanglement in quantum states with as few measurements as possible. In this paper we investigate the minimal number of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) needed to detect bound entanglement in bipartite $(d\times d)$-dimensional states, i.e. entangled states that are positive under partial transposition. In particular, we show that a class of entanglement witnesses composed of mutually unbiased bases can detect bound entanglement if the number of measurements is greater than $d/2+1$. This is a substantial improvement over other detection methods, requiring significantly fewer resources than either full quantum state tomography or measuring a complete set of $d+1$ MUBs. Our approach is based on a partial characterisation of the (non-)decomposability of entanglement witnesses. We show that non-decomposability is a universal property of MUBs, which holds regardless of the choice of complementary observables, and we find that both the number of measurements and the structure of the witness play an important role in the detection of bound entanglement.

On the structure of mirrored operators obtained from optimal entanglement witnesses

Entanglement witnesses (EWs) are a versatile tool in the verification of entangled states. The framework of mirrored EW doubles the power of a given EW by introducing its twin -- a mirrored EW -- whereby two EWs related by mirroring can bound the set of separable states more efficiently. In this work, we investigate the relation between the EWs and its mirrored ones, and present a conjecture which claims that the mirrored operator obtained from an optimal EW is either a positive operator or a decomposable EW, which implies that positive-partial-transpose entangled states, also known as the bound entangled states, cannot be detected. This conjecture is reached by studying numerous known examples of optimal EWs. However, the mirrored EWs obtained from the non-optimal ones can be non-decomposable as well. We also show that mirrored operators obtained from the extremal decomposable witnesses are positive semi-definite. Interestingly, the witnesses that violate the well known conjecture of Structural Physical Approximation, do satisfy our conjecture. The intricate relation between these two conjectures is discussed and it reveals a novel structure of the separability problem.

Generalizing Choi map in $M_3$ beyond circulant scenario

We present a generalization of the family of linear positive maps in $M_3$ proposed thirty years ago by Cho et al. (Linear Algebra Appl. ${\bf 171}$, 213 (1992)) as a generalization of the seminal Choi non-decomposable map. The necessary and sufficient conditions for decomposability are provided.

On the classicality of quantum dephasing processes

We analyze the multitime statistics associated with pure dephasing systems repeatedly probed with sharp measurements, and search for measurement protocols whose statistics satisfies the Kolmogorov consistency conditions possibly up to a finite order. We find a rich phenomenology of quantum dephasing processes which can be interpreted in classical terms. In particular, if the underlying dephasing process is Markovian, we find sufficient conditions under which classicality at every order can be found: this can be reached by choosing the dephasing and measurement basis to be fully compatible or fully incompatible, that is, mutually unbiased bases (MUBs). For non-Markovian processes, classicality can only be proven in the fully compatible case, thus revealing a key difference between Markovian and non-Markovian pure dephasing processes.

On Markovianity and classicality in multilevel spin-boson models

We provide a detailed discussion about the unitary and reduced evolution induced by family of Hamiltonian models describing a multilevel system, with a ground state and a possibly multilevel excited sector, coupled to a multimode boson field via a rotating-wave interaction. We prove explicitly that the system, in the limit in which the coupling is flat with respect to the boson frequencies, is Markovian under sharp measurements in arbitrary bases; we also find necessary and sufficient conditions under which the process is classical, i.e. its family of multitime joint probability distributions satisfies the Kolmogorov consistency condition, and may thus be equivalently obtained by a classical stochastic process.

Time inhomogeneous quantum dynamical maps

We discuss a wide class of time inhomogeneous quantum evolution which is represented by two-parameter family of completely positive trace-preserving maps. These dynamical maps are constructed as infinite series of jump processes. It is shown that such dynamical maps satisfy time inhomogeneous memory kernel master equation which provides a generalization of the master equation involving the standard convolution. Time-local (time convolution-less) approach is discussed as well. Finally, the comparative analysis of traditional time homogeneous vs. time inhomogeneous scenario is provided.

How to design quantum-jump trajectories via distinct master equation representations

Every open-system dynamics can be associated to infinitely many stochastic pictures, called unravelings, which have proved to be extremely useful in several contexts, both from the conceptual and the practical point of view. Here, focusing on quantum-jump unravelings, we demonstrate that there exists inherent freedom in how to assign the terms of the underlying master equation to the deterministic and jump parts of the stochastic description, which leads to a number of qualitatively different unravelings. As relevant examples, we show that a fixed basis of post-jump states can be selected under some definite conditions, or that the deterministic evolution can be set by a chosen time-independent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, even in the presence of external driving. Our approach relies on the definition of rate operators, whose positivity equips each unraveling with a continuous-measurement scheme and is related to a long known but so far not widely used property to classify quantum dynamics, known as dissipativity. Starting from formal mathematical concepts, our results allow us to get fundamental insights into open quantum system dynamics and to enrich their numerical simulations.

Dynamical maps beyond Markovian regime

Quantum dynamical maps provide suitable mathematical representation of quantum evolutions. It is the very notion of complete positivity which provides a proper mathematical representation of quantum evolution and gives rise to the powerful generalization of unitary evolution of closed Hamiltonian systems. A prominent example of quantum evolution of an open system is a Markovian semigroup. In what follows, we analyze both the semigroups of positive and completely positive maps. In the latter case the dynamics is governed by the celebrated Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan (GKLS) Master Equation. Markovian semigroups, however, provide only an approximate description of general quantum evolution. The main topic of our analysis are dynamical maps beyond this regime. Non-Markovian quantum evolution attracted a lot of attention in recent years and there is a vast literature dedicated to it. In this report we analyze quantum dynamics governed by time-local generators and/or non-local memory kernels. A special attention is devoted to the concept of {\em divisibility} which is often used as a definition of Markovianity. In particular, the concept of so called CP-divisibility (in contrast to P-divisibility) is widely accepted as a proper definition of quantum Markovianity. We discuss a number of important physical implications of divisibility. We also briefly discuss the notion of Markovianity beyond the dynamical map, that is, when one has an access to the evolution of `system + environment'. The entire exposition is concentrated more on the general concepts and intricate connections between them than on studying particular systems. We illustrate the analyzed concepts by paradigmatic models of open quantum systems like the amplitude damping and phase damping models.

One parameter generalization of BW inequality and its application to open quantum dynamics

In this paper, we introduce a one parameter generalization of the famous Böttcher-Wenzel (BW) inequality in terms of a $q$-deformed commutator. For $n \times n$ matrices $A$ and $B$, we consider the inequality \[ \Re\langle[B,A],[B,A]_q\rangle \le c(q) \|A\|^2 \|B\|^2, \] where $\langle A,B \rangle = {\rm tr}(A^*B)$ is the Hilbert-Schmidt inner product, $\|A\|$ is the Frobenius norm, $[A,B] =AB-BA$ is the commutator, and $[A,B]_q =AB-qBA$ is the $q$-deformed commutator. We prove that when $n=2$, or when $A$ is normal with any size $n$, the optimal bound is given by \[ c(q) = \frac{(1+q) +\sqrt{2(1+q^2)}}{2}. \] We conjecture that this is also true for any matrices, and this conjecture is perfectly supported for $n$ up to $15$ by numerical optimization. When $q=1$, this inequality is exactly BW inequality. When $q=0$, this inequality leads the sharp bound for the $r$-function which is recently derived for the application to universal constraints of relaxation rates in open quantum dynamics.

Strongly coupled quantum Otto cycle with single qubit bath

We discuss a model of a closed quantum evolution of two-qubits where the joint Hamiltonian is so chosen that one of the qubits acts as a bath and thermalize the other qubit which is acting as the system. The corresponding exact master equation for the system is derived. Interestingly, for a specific choice of parameters the master equation takes the Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan (GKLS) form with constant coefficients, representing pumping and damping of a single qubit system. Based on this model we construct an Otto cycle connected to a single qubit bath and study its thermodynamic properties. Our analysis goes beyond the conventional weak coupling scenario and illustrates the effects of finite bath including non-Markovianity. We find closed form expressions for efficiency (coefficient of performance), power (cooling power) for heat engine regime (refrigerator regime) for different modifications of the joint Hamiltonian.

Excitation-damping quantum channels

We study a class of quantum channels describing a quantum system, split into the direct sum of an excited and a ground sector, undergoing a one-way transfer of population from the former to the latter; this construction, which provides a generalization of the amplitude-damping qubit channel, can be regarded as a way to upgrade a trace non-increasing quantum operation, defined on the excited sector, to a possibly trace preserving operation on a larger Hilbert space. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the complete positivity of such channels, and we also show that complete positivity is equivalent to simple positivity whenever the ground sector is one-dimensional. Finally, we examine the time-dependent scenario and characterize all CP-divisible channels and Markovian semigroups belonging to this class.

Quantum regression beyond the Born-Markov approximation for generalized spin-boson models

The quantum regression formula for an open quantum system consists in an infinite hierarchy of conditions for its multi-time correlation functions, thus requiring full access to the total "system+environment" evolution, and providing a stronger requirement than CP-divisibility. Here, we analyze CP-divisibility and check the validity of quantum regression beyond the Born-Markov approximation (e.g. weak coupling limit) for a class of generalized spin-boson (GSB) models giving rise to a multi-level amplitude-damping evolution; in all cases, it is possible to engineer the system-bath coupling in such a way that quantum regression is exactly satisfied.

Bounding the Frobenius norm of a q-deformed commutator

For two $n \times n$ complex matrices $A$ and $B$, we define the $q$-deformed commutator as $[ A, B ]_q := A B - q BA$ for a real parameter $q$. In this paper, we investigate a generalization of the Böttcher-Wenzel inequality which gives the sharp upper bound of the (Frobenius) norm of the commutator. In our generalisation, we investigate sharp upper bounds on the $q$-deformed commutator. This generalization can be studied in two different scenarios: firstly bounds for general matrices, and secondly for traceless matrices. For both scenarios, partial answers and conjectures are given for positive and negative $q$. In particular, denoting the Frobenius norm by $||.||_F$, when either $A$ or $B$ is normal, we prove the following inequality to be true and sharp: $|| [ A , B ]_q||_F^2 \le \left(1+q^2 \right) ||A||_F^2 ||B||_F^2$ for positive $q$. Also, we conjecture that the same bound is true for positive $q$ when either $A$ or $B$ is traceless. For negative $q$, we conjecture other sharp upper bounds to be true for the generic scenarios and the scenario when either of $A$ or $B$ is traceless. All conjectures are supported with numerics and proved for $n=2$.

Quantum regression in dephasing phenomena

We investigate the validity of quantum regression for a family of quantum Hamiltonians on a multipartite system leading to phase-damping reduced dynamics. After finding necessary and sufficient conditions for the CP-divisibility of the corresponding channel, we evaluate a hierarchy of equations equivalent to the validity of quantum regression under arbitrary interventions; in particular, we find necessary conditions for a nontrivial dephasing to be compatible with quantum regression. In this framework, we study a class of dephasing-type generalized spin-boson (GSB) models, investigating the existence of qubit-environment coupling functions that ensure the exact validity of quantum regression.

A class of Bell diagonal entanglement witnesses in $\mathbb{C}^4 \otimes \mathbb{C}^4$: optimization and the spanning property

Two classes of Bell diagonal indecomposable entanglement witnesses in $\mathbb{C}^4 \otimes \mathbb{C}^4$ are considered. Within the first class, we find a generalization of the well-known Choi witness from $\mathbb{C}^3 \otimes \mathbb{C}^3$, while the second one contains the reduction map. Interestingly, contrary to $\mathbb{C}^3 \otimes \mathbb{C}^3$ case, the generalized Choi witnesses are no longer optimal. We perform an optimization procedure of finding spanning vectors, that eventually gives rise to optimal witnesses. Operators from the second class turn out to be optimal, however, without the spanning property. This analysis sheds a new light into the intricate structure of optimal entanglement witnesses.

Eternally non-Markovian dynamics of a qubit interacting with a single-photon wavepacket

An evolution of a two-level system (qubit) interacting with a single-photon wave packet is analyzed. It is shown that a hierarchy of master equations gives rise to phase covariant qubit evolution. The temporal correlations in the input field induce nontrivial memory effects for the evolution of a qubit. It is shown that in the resonant case whenever time-local generator is regular (does not display singularities) the qubit evolution never displays information backflow. However, in general the generator might be highly singular leading to intricate non-Markovian effects. A detailed analysis of the exponential profile is provided which allows to illustrate all characteristic feature of the qubit evolution.
