Divisibility and Information Flow Notions of Quantum Markovianity for Noninvertible Dynamical Maps

We analyze the relation between CP-divisibility and the lack of information backflow for an arbitrary -- not necessarily invertible -- dynamical map. It is well known that CP-divisibility always implies lack of information backflow. Moreover, these two notions are equivalent for invertible maps. In this letter it is shown that for a map which is not invertible the lack of information backflow always implies the existence of completely positive (CP) propagator which, however, needs not be trace-preserving. Interestingly, for a {\em wide class of image non-increasing dynamical maps} this propagator becomes trace-preserving as well and hence the lack of information backflow implies CP-divisibility. This result sheds new light into the structure of the time-local generators giving rise to CP-divisible evolutions. We show that if the map is not invertible then positivity of dissipation/decoherence rates is no longer necessary for {CP-}divisibility.

Generalizing Choi-like maps

A problem of further generalization of generalized Choi maps $Φ_{[a,b,c]}$ acting on $\mathbb{M}_3$ introduced by Cho, Kye and Lee is discussed. Some necessary conditions for positivity of the generalized maps are provided as well as some sufficient conditions. Also some sufficient condition for decomposability of these maps is shown.

Entanglement witnesses from mutually unbiased bases

We provide a class of entanglement witnesses constructed in terms of Mutually Unbiased Bases (MUBs). This construction reproduces many well-known examples like the celebrated reduction map and Choi map together with its generalizations. We illustrated our construction by the detailed analysis of the 3-dimensional case: in this case, one obtains a family of entanglement witnesses parameterized by an L-dimensional torus (L = 2,3,4 being a number of MUBs used in the construction).

On Bipartite Operators Defined by Completely Different Permutations

We introduce a class of bipartite operators acting on $\mathcal{H} \otimes \mathcal{H}$ ($\mathcal{H}$ being an $n$-dimensional Hilbert space) defined by a set of $n$ Completely Different Permutations CDP. Bipartite operators are of particular importance in quantum information theory to represent states and observables of composite quantum systems. It turns out that any set of CDPs gives rise to a certain direct sum decomposition of the total Hilbert space which enables one simple construction of the corresponding bipartite operator. Interestingly, if set of CDPs defines an abelian group then the corresponding bipartite operator displays an additional property -- the partially transposed operator again corresponds to (in general different) set of CDPs. Therefore, our technique may be used to construct new classes of so called PPT states which are of great importance for quantum information. Using well known relation between bipartite operators and linear maps one use also construct linear maps related to CDPs.

Quantum channels irreducibly covariant with respect to the finite group generated by the Weyl operators

We introduce a class of linear maps irreducibly covariant with respect to the finite group generated by the Weyl operators. This group provides a direct generalization of the quaternion group. In particular, we analyze the irreducibly covariant quantum channels; that is, the completely positive and trace-preserving linear maps. Interestingly, imposing additional symmetries leads to the so-called generalized Pauli channels, which were recently considered in the context of the non-Markovian quantum evolution. Finally, we provide examples of irreducibly covariant positive but not necessarily completely positive maps.

Star network synchronization led by strong coupling-induced frequency squeezing

We consider a star network consisting of N oscillators coupled to a central one which in turn is coupled to an infinite set of oscillators (reservoir), which makes it leaking. Two of the N + 1 normal modes are dissipating, while the remaining N - 1 lie in a frequency range which is more and more squeezed as the coupling strengths increase, which realizes synchronization of the single parts of the system.

Eternal non-Markovianity: from random unitary to Markov chain realisations

The theoretical description of quantum dynamics in an intriguing way does not necessarily imply the underlying dynamics is indeed intriguing. Here we show how a known very interesting master equation with an always negative decay rate [eternal non-Markovianity (ENM)] arises from simple stochastic Schrödinger dynamics (random unitary dynamics). Equivalently, it may be seen as arising from a mixture of Markov (semi-group) open system dynamics. Both these approaches lead to a more general family of CPT maps, characterized by a point within a parameter triangle. Our results show how ENM quantum dynamics can be realised easily in the laboratory. Moreover, we find a quantum time-continuously measured (quantum trajectory) realisation of the dynamics of the ENM master equation based on unitary transformations and projective measurements in an extended Hilbert space, guided by a classical Markov process. Furthermore, a Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKSL) representation of the dynamics in an extended Hilbert space can be found, with a remarkable property: there is no dynamics in the ancilla state. Finally, analogous constructions for two qubits extend these results from non-CP-divisible to non-P-divisible dynamics.

Memory kernel approach to generalized Pauli channels: Markovian, semi-Markov, and beyond

In this paper, we analyze the evolution of the generalized Pauli channels governed by the memory kernel master equation. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the memory kernel to give rise to the legitimate (completely positive and trace-preserving) quantum evolution. In particular, we analyze a class of kernels generating the quantum semi-Markov evolution, which is a natural generalization of the Markovian semigroup. Interestingly, the convex combination of Markovian semigroups goes beyond the semi-Markov case. Our analysis is illustrated with several examples.

On generalized semi-Markov quantum evolution

We provide a large class of quantum evolution governed by the memory kernel master equation. This class defines quantum analog of so called semi-Markov classical stochastic evolution. In this Letter for the first time we provide a proper definition of quantum semi-Markov evolution and using the appropriate gauge freedom we propose a suitable generalization which contains majority of examples considered so far in the literature. The key concepts are quantum counterparts of classical waiting time distribution and survival probability -- quantum waiting time operator and quantum survival operator, respectively. In particular collision models and its generalizations considered recently are special examples of generalized semi-Markov evolution. This approach allows for an interesting generalization of trajectory description of the quantum dynamics in terms of POVM densities.

Generalized Pauli channels and a class of non-Markovian quantum evolution

We analyze the quantum evolution represented by a time-dependent family of generalized Pauli channels. This evolution is provided by the random decoherence channels with respect to the maximal number of mutually unbiased bases. We derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for the vanishing back-flow of information.

Tensor power of dynamical maps and P- vs. CP-divisibility

The are several non-equivalent notions of Markovian quantum evolution. In this paper we show that the one based on the so-called CP-divisibility of the corresponding dynamical map enjoys the following stability property: the dynamical map $Λ_t$ is CP-divisible iff the second tensor power $Λ_t\otimesΛ_t$ is CP-divisible as well. Moreover, the P-divisibility of the map $Λ_t\otimesΛ_t$ is equivalent to the CP-divisibility of the map $Λ_t$. Interestingly, the latter property is no longer true if we replace the P-divisibility of $Λ_t\otimesΛ_t$ by simple positivity and the CP-divisibility of $Λ_t$ by complete positivity. That is, unlike when $Λ_t$ has a time-independent generator, positivity of $Λ_t\otimesΛ_t$ does not imply complete positivity of $Λ_t$.

Detecting non-Markovianity of quantum evolution via spectra of dynamical maps

We provide an analysis on non-Markovian quantum evolution based on the spectral properties of dynamical maps. We introduce the dynamical analog of entanglement witness to detect non-Markovianity and we illustrate its behaviour with several instructive examples. It is shown that for a certain class of dynamical maps the shape of the body of accessible states provides a simple non-Markovianity witness.

Sufficient conditions for memory kernel master equation

We derive sufficient conditions for the memory kernel which guarantee legitimate (completely positive and trace-preserving) dynamical map. It turns out that these conditions provide a natural parameterizations of the dynamical map being a generalization of Markovian semigroup. It is shown that this class of maps cover almost all known examples -- from Markovian semigroup, semi-Markov evolution up to collision models and their generalization.

Generalising Wigner's theorem

We analyse linear maps of operator algebras $\mathcal{B}_H(\mathcal{H})$ mapping the set of rank-$k$ projectors onto the set of rank-$l$ projectors surjectively. We give a complete characterisation of such maps for prime $n = \dim\mathcal{H}$. The solution is known for $k=l=1$ as the Wigner's theorem.

Sufficient separability criteria and linear maps

We study families of positive and completely positive maps acting on a bipartite system $\mathbb{C}^M\otimes \mathbb{C}^N$ (with $M\leq N$). The maps have a property that when applied to any state (of a given entanglement class) they result in a separable state, or more generally a state of another certain entanglement class (e.g., Schmidt number $\leq k$). This allows us to derive useful families of sufficient separability criteria. Explicit examples of such criteria have been constructed for arbitrary $M,N$, with a special emphasis on $M=2$. Our results can be viewed as generalizations of the known facts that in the sufficiently close vicinity of the completely depolarized state (the normalized identity matrix), all states are separable (belong to "weakly" entangled classes). Alternatively, some of our results can be viewed as an entanglement classification for a certain family of states, corresponding to mixtures of the completely polarized state with pure state projectors, partially transposed and locally transformed pure state projectors.

A class of bistochastic positive optimal maps in $M_d(\mathbb{C})$

We provide a straightforward generalization of a positive map in $M_3(\mathbb{C})$ considered recently by Miller and Olkiewicz \cite{Miller}. It is proved that these maps are optimal and indecomposable. As a byproduct we provide a class of PPT entangled states in $d \otimes d$.
