Thermodynamics and the quantum speed limit in the non-Markovian regime

Quantum speed limit (QSL) for open quantum systems in the non-Markovian regime is analyzed. We provide a the lower bound for the time required to transform an initial state to a final state in terms of thermodynamic quantities such as the energy fluctuation, entropy production rate and dynamical activity. Such bound was already analyzed for Markovian evolution satisfying detailed balance condition. Here we generalize this approach to deal with arbitrary evolution governed by time-local generator. Our analysis is illustrated by three paradigmatic examples of qubit evolution: amplitude damping, pure dephasing, and the eternally non-Markovian evolution.

Entanglement witnesses from mutually unbiased measurements

A new family of positive, trace-preserving maps is introduced. It is defined using the mutually unbiased measurements, which generalize the notion of mutual unbiasedness of orthonormal bases. This family allows one to define entanglement witnesses whose indecomposability depends on the characteristics of the associated measurement operators.

On the hybrid Davies like generator for quantum dissipation

We provide a class of quantum evolution beyond Markovian semigroup. This class is governed by a hybrid Davies like generator such that dissipation is controlled by a suitable memory kernel and decoherence by standard GKLS generator. These two processes commute and both of them commute with the unitary evolution controlled by the systems Hamiltonian. The corresponding memory kernel gives rise to semi-Markov evolution of the diagonal elements of the density matrix. However, the corresponding evolution needs not be completely positive. The role of decoherence generator is to restore complete positivity. Hence, to pose the dynamical problem one needs two processes generated by classical semi-Markov memory kernel and purely quantum decoherence generator. This scheme is illustrated for a qubit evolution.

Interpolating between positive and completely positive maps: a new hierarchy of entangled states

A new class of positive maps is introduced. It interpolates between positive and completely positive maps. It is shown that this class gives rise to a new characterization of entangled states. Additionally, it provides a refinement of the well-known classes of entangled states characterized in term of the Schmidt number. The analysis is illustrated with examples of qubit maps.

Detection power of separability criteria based on a correlation tensor: a case study

Detection power of separability criteria based on a correlation tensor is tested within a family of generalized isotropic state in $d_1 \otimes d_2$. For $d_1 \neq d_2$ all these criteria are weaker than positive partial transposition (PPT) criterion. Interestingly, our analysis supports the recent conjecture that a criterion based on symmetrically informationaly complete positive operator-valued measure (SIC-POVMs) is stronger than realignment criterion.

On the Alberti-Uhlmann Condition for Unital Channels

We address the problem of existence of completely positive trace preserving (CPTP) maps between two sets of density matrices. We refine the result of Alberti and Uhlmann and derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a unital channel between two pairs of qubit states which ultimately boils down to three simple inequalities.

Construction of propagators for divisible dynamical maps

Divisible dynamical maps play an important role in characterizing Markovianity on the level of quantum evolution. Divisible maps provide important generalization of Markovian semigroups. Usually one analyzes either completely positive or just positive divisibility meaning that the corresponding propagators are defined in terms of completely positive or positive maps, respectively. For maps which are invertible at any moment of time the very existence of propagator is already guaranteed and hence the only issue is (complete) positivity and trace-preservation. However, for maps which are not invertible the problem is much more involved since even the existence of a propagator is not guaranteed. In this paper we propose a simple method to construct propagators of dynamical maps using the concept of generalized inverse. We analyze both time-continuous and time-discrete maps. Since the generalized inverse is not uniquely defined the same applies for the corresponding propagator. In simple examples of qubit evolution we analyze it turns out that additional requirement of complete positivity possibly makes the propagator unique.

Enhanced realignment criterion vs. linear entanglement witnesses

It is shown that the enhanced (nonlinear) realignment criterion is equivalent to the family of linear criteria based on correlation tensor. These criteria generalize the original (linear) realignment criterium and give rise to the family of entanglement witnesses. An appropriate limiting procedure is proposed which leads to a novel class of witnesses which are as powerful as the enhanced realignment criterion.

Quantum evolution with a large number of negative decoherence rates

Non-Markovian effects in quantum evolution appear when the system is strongly coupled to the environment and interacts with it for long periods of time. To include memory effects in the master equations, one usually incorporates time-local generators or memory kernels. However, it turns out that non-Markovian evolution with eternally negative decoherence rates arises from a simple mixture of Markovian semigroups. Moreover, one can have as many as $(d-1)^2$ always negative rates out of $d^2-1$ total, and the quantum evolution is still legitimate.

Entanglement Witness $2.0$: Compressed/Mirrored Entanglement Witnesses

An entanglement witness is an observable detecting entanglement for a subset of states. We present a framework that makes an entanglement witness twice as powerful due to the general existence of a second (lower) bound, in addition to the (upper) bound of the very definition. This second bound, if non-trivial, is violated by another subset of entangled states. Differently stated, we prove via the structural physical approximation that two witnesses can be compressed into a single one. Consequently, our framework shows that any entanglement witness can be upgraded to a witness $2.0$. The generality and its power are demonstrate by applications to bipartite and multipartite qubit/qudit systems.

A family of multipartite separability criteria based on correlation tensor

A family of separability criteria based on correlation matrix (tensor) is provided. Interestingly, it unifies several criteria known before like e.g. CCNR or realignment criterion, de Vicente criterion and derived recently separability criterion based on SIC POVMs. It should be stressed that, unlike the well known Correlation Matrix Criterion or criterion based on Local Uncertainty Relations, the new criteria are linear in the density operator and hence one may find new classes of entanglement witnesses and positive maps. Interestingly, there is a natural generalization to multipartite scenario using multipartite correlation matrix. We illustrate the detection power of the above criteria on several well known examples of quantum states.

Dissipative generators, divisible dynamical maps and Kadison-Schwarz inequality

We introduce a concept of Kadison-Schwarz divisible dynamical maps. It turns out that it is a natural generalization of the well known CP-divisibility which characterizes quantum Markovian evolution. It is proved that Kadison-Schwarz divisible maps are fully characterized in terms of time-local dissipative generators. Simple qubit evolution illustrates the concept.

Universal spectra of random Lindblad operators

To understand typical dynamics of an open quantum system in continuous time, we introduce an ensemble of random Lindblad operators, which generate Markovian completely positive evolution in the space of density matrices. Spectral properties of these operators, including the shape of the spectrum in the complex plane, are evaluated by using methods of free probabilities and explained with non-Hermitian random matrix models. We also demonstrate universality of the spectral features. The notion of ensemble of random generators of Markovian qauntum evolution constitutes a step towards categorization of dissipative quantum chaos.

Optimal entanglement witnesses from limited local measurements

We address the problem of optimising entanglement witnesses when a limited fixed set of local measurements can be performed on a bipartite system, thus providing a procedure, feasible also for experiments, to detect entangled states using only the statistics of these local measurements. We completely characterize the class of entanglement witnesses of the form $W = P ^Γ$, where $Γ$ denotes partial transposition, that can be constructed from the measurements of the bipartite operators $σ_{x}\otimesσ_{x},$ $σ_{y}\otimesσ_{y}$ and $σ_{z}\otimesσ_{z}$ in the case of two-qubit systems. In particular, we consider all possible extremal decomposable witnesses within the considered class that can be defined from this set of measurements. Finally, we discuss possible extensions to higher dimension bipartite systems when the set of available measurements is characterized by the generalized Gell-Mann matrices. We provide several examples of entanglement witnesses, both decomposable and indecomposable, that can be constructed with these limited resources.

Time deformations of master equations

Convolutionless and convolution master equations are the two mostly used physical descriptions of open quantum systems dynamics. We subject these equations to time deformations: local dilations and contractions of time scale. We prove that the convolutionless equation remains legitimate under any time deformation (results in a completely positive dynamical map) if and only if the original dynamics is completely positive divisible. Similarly, for a specific class of convolution master equations we show that uniform time dilations preserve positivity of the deformed map if the original map is positive divisible. These results allow witnessing different types of non-Markovian behavior: the absence of complete positivity for a deformed convolutionless master equation clearly indicates that the original dynamics is at least weakly non-Markovian; the absence of positivity for a class of time-dilated convolution master equations is a witness of essentially non-Markovian original dynamics.

Quantum trajectories for a system interacting with environment in N-photon state

We derive stochastic master equation for a quantum system interacting with an environment prepared in a continuous-mode $N$-photon state. To determine the conditional evolution of the quantum system depending on continuous in time measurements of the output field the model of repeated interactions and measurements is applied. The environment is defined as an infinite chain of harmonic oscillators which do not interact between themselves and they are prepared initially in an entangled state being a discrete analogue of a continuous-mode $N$-photon state. We provide not only the quantum trajectories but also the analytical formulae for the whole statistics of the output photons and the solution to the master equation. The solution in the continuous case is represented by a simple diagrammatic technique with very transparent "Feynmann rules". This technique considerably simplifies the structure of the solution and enables one to find physical interpretation for the solution in terms of a few elementary processes.

Information flow versus divisibility for qubit evolution

We study the relation between lack of Information Backflow and completely positive divisibility (CP divisibility) for non-invertible qubit dynamical maps. Recently, these two concepts were shown to be fully equivalent for the so called image non-increasing dynamical maps. Here we show that this equivalence is universal for any qubit dynamical map. A key ingredient in our proof is the observation that there does not exist CPTP projector onto a 3-dimensional subspace spanned by qubit density operators. Our analysis is illustrated by several examples of qubit evolution including also dynamical maps which are not image non-increasing.

Engineering fidelity of the generalized Pauli channels via legitimate memory kernels

We analyze the fidelity of the generalized Pauli channels governed by memory kernel master equations. It is shown that, by appropriate engineering of parameters of the corresponding memory kernel, the quantum evolution with non-local noise can have higher fidelity than the corresponding purely Markovian evolution governed by the Markovian semigroup. Similar engineering can substantially influence the evolution of quantum entanglement, entropy, and quantum coherence.
