ArH+ and H2O+ absorption towards luminous galaxies

Along several sight lines within the Milky Way ArH+ has been ubiquitously detected with only one detection in extragalactic environments, namely along two sight lines in the red shift z=0.89 absorber towards the lensed blazar PKS 1830-211. Being formed in predominantly atomic gas by reactions between Ar+, which were initially ionised by cosmic rays and molecular hydrogen, ArH+ has been shown to be an excellent tracer of atomic gas as well as the impinging cosmic-ray ionisation rates. In this work, we attempt to extend the observations of ArH+in extragalactic sources to examine its use as a tracer of the atomic interstellar medium (ISM) in these galaxies. We report the detection of ArH+ towards two luminous nearby galaxies, NGC 253 and NGC 4945, and the non-detection towards Arp 220 observed using the SEPIA660 receiver on the APEX 12 m telescope. In addition, the two sidebands of this receiver allowed us to observe the NKaKc=1_1,0-1_0,1 transitions of another atomic gas tracer p-H2O+ at 607.227 GHz with the ArH+ line, simultaneously. We modelled the optically thin spectra of both species and compared their observed line profiles with that of other well-known atomic gas tracers such as OH+ and o-H2O+ and diffuse and dense molecular gas tracers HF and CO, respectively. By further assuming that the observed absorption from the ArH+, OH+, and H2O+ molecules are affected by the same flux of cosmic rays, we investigate the properties of the different cloud layers based on a steady-state analysis of the chemistry of these three species.

The chemistry of chlorine-bearing species in the diffuse interstellar medium, and new SOFIA/GREAT observations of HCl$^+$

We have revisited the chemistry of chlorine-bearing species in the diffuse interstellar medium with new observations of the HCl$^+$ molecular ion and new astrochemical models. Using the GREAT instrument on board SOFIA, we observed the $^2Π_{3/2}\, J = 5/2 - 3/2$ transition of HCl$^+$ near 1444 GHz toward the bright THz continuum source W49N. We detected absorption by diffuse foreground gas unassociated with the background source, and were able to thereby measure the distribution of HCl$^+$ along the sight-line. We interpreted the observational data using an updated version of an astrochemical model used previously in a theoretical study of Cl-bearing interstellar molecules. The abundance of HCl$^+$ was found to be almost constant relative to the related H$_2$Cl$^+$ ion, but the observed $n({\rm H_2Cl^+})/n({\rm HCl^+})$ abundance ratio exceeds the predictions of our astrochemical model by an order-of-magnitude. This discrepancy suggests that the rate of the primary destruction process for ${\rm H_2Cl^+}$, dissociative recombination, has been significantly overestimated. For HCl$^+$, the model predictions can provide a satisfactory fit to the observed column densities along the W49N sight-line while simultaneously accounting for the ${\rm OH^+}$ and ${\rm H_2O^+}$ column densities.

Anomalous intensities in the infrared emission of CH$^+$ explained by quantum nuclear motion and electric dipole calculations

The unusual infrared emission patterns of CH$^+$, recently detected in the planetary nebula NGC 7027, are examined theoretically with high-accuracy rovibrational wavefunctions and $ab$ $initio$ dipole moment curves. The calculated transition dipole moments quantitatively reproduce the observed $J$-dependent intensity variation, which is ascribed to underlying centrifugal distortion-induced interference effects. We discuss the implications of this anomalous behavior for astrochemical modeling of CH$^+$ production and excitation, and provide a simple expression to estimate the magnitude of this effect for other light diatomic molecules with small dipole derivatives.

Observations and analysis of CH$^+$ vibrational emissions from the young, carbon-rich planetary nebula NGC 7027: a textbook example of chemical pumping

We discuss the detection of 14 rovibrational lines of CH$^+$, obtained with the iSHELL spectrograph on NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) on Maunakea. Our observations in the 3.49 - 4.13 $μ$m spectral region, obtained with a 0.375" slit width that provided a spectral resolving power $λ/Δλ\sim 80,000$, have resulted in the unequivocal detection of the $R(0) - R(3)$ and $P(1)-P(10)$ transitions within the $v=1-0$ band of CH$^+$. The $R$-branch transitions are anomalously weak relative to the $P$-branch transitions, a behavior that is explained accurately by rovibronic calculations of the transition dipole moment reported in a companion paper (Changala et al. 2021). Nine infrared transitions of H$_2$ were also detected in these observations, comprising the $S(8)$, $S(9)$, $S(13)$ and $S(15)$ pure rotational lines; the $v=1-0$ $O(4) - O(7)$ lines, and the $v=2-1$ $O(5)$ line. We present a photodissociation region model, constrained by the CH$^+$ and H$_2$ line fluxes that we measured, that includes a detailed treatment of the excitation of CH$^+$ by inelastic collisions, optical pumping, and chemical ("formation") pumping. The latter process is found to dominate the excitation of the observed rovibrational lines of CH$^+$, and the model is remarkably successful in explaining both the absolute and relative strengths of the CH$^+$ and H$_2$ lines.

Terahertz Water Masers: II. Further SOFIA/GREAT Detections toward Circumstellar Outflows, and a Multitransition Analysis

Following up on our discovery of terahertz water masers, reported in 2017, we report two further detections of water maser emission at frequencies above 1 THz. Using the GREAT instrument on SOFIA, we have detected emission in the 1.296411 THz $8_{27}-7_{34}$ transition of water toward two additional oxygen-rich evolved stars, omicron Ceti (Mira) and R Crateris, and obtained an upper limit on the 1.296 THz line emission from U Orionis. Toward these three sources, and toward the red supergiant star VY Canis Majorae from which 1.296 THz line emission was reported previously, we have also observed several lower-frequency (sub)millimeter water maser transitions using the APEX 12-m telescope along with the 22 GHz transition using the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. We have used a simple model to analyse the multi-transition data thereby obtained. Adopting, as a prior, independent literature estimates of the mass-loss-rates in these four sources and in W Hydrae, we infer water abundances in a remarkably narrow range: $n({\rm H_2O})/n({\rm H_2}) = 1.4 - 2.5 \times 10^{-4}$. For o Cet, VY CMa, and W Hya, the model is successful in predicting the maser line fluxes to within a typical factor $\sim 1.6 - 3$. For R Crt and U Ori, the model is less successful, with typical line flux predictions lying an order of magnitude above or below the observations; such discrepancies are perhaps unsurprising given the exponential nature of maser amplification.

Extending the view of ArH+ chemistry in diffuse clouds

One of the surprises of the Herschel mission was the detection of ArH+ towards the Crab Nebula in emission and in absorption towards strong Galactic background sources. Although these detections were limited to the first quadrant of the Galaxy, the existing data suggest that ArH+ ubiquitously and exclusively probes the diffuse atomic regions of the ISM. In this study, we extend the coverage of ArH+ to other parts of the Galaxy with new observations of its J = 1-0 transition along seven Galactic sight lines towards bright sub-mm continuum sources. We aim to benchmark its efficiency as a tracer of purely atomic gas by evaluating its correlation (or lack there of) with other well-known atomic and molecular gas tracers. The observations of ArH+ near 617.5 GHz were made feasible with the new, sensitive SEPIA660 receiver on the APEX 12 m telescope. The two sidebands of this receiver allowed us to observe p-H2O+ transitions of at 607.227 GHz simultaneously with the ArH+ line. By analysing the steady state chemistry of OH+ and o-H2O+, we derive on average a cosmic-ray ionisation rate (CRIR), of 2.3e-16 s^-1 towards the sight lines studied in this work. Using the derived values of the CRIR and the observed ArH+ abundances we constrain the molecular fraction of the gas traced by ArH+ to lie below 2e-2 with a median value of 8.8e-4. Combined, our observations of ArH+, OH+, H2O+, and CH probe different regimes of the ISM, from diffuse atomic to diffuse and translucent molecular clouds. Over Galactic scales, we see that the distribution of N(ArH+) is associated with that of N(H), particularly in the inner Galaxy with potentially even contributions from the warm neutral medium phase of atomic gas at larger galactocentric distances. We derive an average o/p-ratio for H2O+ of 2.1, which corresponds to a nuclear spin temperature of 41 K, consistent with the typical gas temperatures of diffuse clouds.

High Resolution Infrared Spectroscopy of Hot Molecular Gas in AFGL 2591 and AFGL 2136: Accretion in the Inner Regions of Disks Around Massive Young Stellar Objects

We have performed a high resolution 4-13 $μm$ spectral survey of the hot molecular gas associated with the massive protostars AFGL 2591 and AFGL 2136, utilising the Echelon-Cross-Echelle-Spectrograph (EXES) on-board the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), and the iSHELL instrument and Texas Echelon Cross Echelle Spectrograph (TEXES) on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF). Here we present results of this survey with analysis of CO, HCN, C$_2$H$_2$, NH$_3$ and CS, deriving the physical conditions for each species. Also from the IRTF, iSHELL data at 3 $μm$ for AFGL 2591 are presented that show HCN and C$_2$H$_2$ in emission. In the EXES and TEXES data, all species are detected in absorption, and temperatures and abundances are found to be high (600 K and 10$^{-6}$, respectively). Differences of up to an order of magnitude in the abundances of transitions that trace the same ground state level are measured for HCN and C$_2$H$_2$. The mid-infrared continuum is known to originate in a disk, hence we attribute the infrared absorption to arise in the photosphere of the disk. As absorption lines require an outwardly decreasing temperature gradient, we conclude that the disk is heated in the mid-plane by viscous heating due to accretion. We attribute the near-IR emission lines to scattering by molecules in the upper layers of the disk photosphere. The absorption lines trace the disk properties at 50 AU where a high temperature gas-phase chemistry is taking place. Abundances are consistent with chemical models of the inner disk of Herbig disks.

Distribution of Water Vapor in Molecular Clouds. II

The depth-dependent abundance of both gas-phase and solid-state water within dense, quiescent, molecular clouds is important to both the cloud chemistry and gas cooling. Where water is in the gas phase, it's free to participate in the network of ion-neutral reactions that lead to a host of oxygen-bearing molecules, and its many ortho and para energy levels make it an effective coolant for gas temperatures greater than 20K. Where water is abundant as ice on grain surfaces, and unavailable to cool the gas, significant amounts of oxygen are removed from the gas phase, suppressing the gas-phase chemical reactions that lead to a number of oxygen-bearing species, including O2. Models of FUV-illuminated clouds predict that the gas-phase water abundance peaks in the range Av ~3 and 8mag of the cloud surface, depending on the gas density and FUV field strength. Deeper within such clouds, water is predicted to exist mainly as ice on grain surfaces. More broadly, these models are used to analyze a variety of other regions, including outflow cavities associated with young stellar objects and the surface layers of protoplanetary disks. In this paper, we report the results of observational tests of FUV-illuminated cloud models toward the Orion Molecular Ridge and Cepheus B using data obtained from the Herschel Space Observatory and the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory. Toward Orion, 2220 spatial positions were observed along the face-on Orion Ridge in the H2O 110-101 557GHz and NH3 J,K=1,0-0,0 572GHz lines. Toward Cepheus B, two strip scans were made in the same lines across the edge-on ionization front. These new observations demonstrate that gas-phase water exists primarily within a few magnitudes of dense cloud surfaces, strengthening the conclusions of an earlier study based on a much smaller data set, and indirectly supports the prediction that water ice is quite abundant in dense clouds.

Detection of vibrational emissions from the helium hydride ion (HeH$^+$) in the planetary nebula NGC 7027

We report the detection of emission in the v=1-0 P(1) (3.51629 micron) and P(2) (3.60776 micron) rovibrational lines of the helium hydride cation (HeH+) from the planetary nebula NGC 7027. These detections were obtained with the iSHELL spectrograph on NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) on Maunakea. The confirm the discovery of HeH+ reported recently by Guesten et al. (2019), who used the GREAT instrument on the SOFIA airborne observatory to observe its pure rotational J=1-0 transition at 149.137 micron. The flux measured for the HeH+ v=1-0 P(1) line is in good agreement with our model for the formation, destruction and excitation of HeH+ in NGC 7027. The measured strength of the J=1-0 pure rotational line, however, exceeds the model prediction significantly, as does that of the v=1-0 P(2) line, by factors of 2.9 and 2.3 respectively. Possible causes of these discrepancies are discussed. Our observations of NGC 7027, covering the 3.26 - 3.93 micron spectral region, have led to the detection of more than sixty spectral lines including nine rovibrational emissions from CH+. The latter are detected for the first time in an astronomical source.

The Structure of Dark Molecular Gas in the Galaxy -- II. Physical State of "CO-Dark" Gas in the Perseus Arm

We report the results from a new, highly sensitive ($ΔT_{mb} \sim 3 $mK) survey for thermal OH emission at 1665 and 1667 MHz over a dense, 9 x 9-pixel grid covering a $1°$ x $1°$ patch of sky in the direction of $l = 105°, b = +2.50°$ towards the Perseus spiral arm of our Galaxy. We compare our Green Bank Telescope (GBT) 1667 MHz OH results with archival CO J=1-0 observations from the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (FCRAO) Outer Galaxy Survey within the velocity range of the Perseus Arm at these galactic coordinates. Out of the 81 statistically-independent pointings in our survey area, 86% show detectable OH emission at 1667 MHz, and 19% of them show detectable CO emission. We explore the possible physical conditions of the observed features using a set of diffuse molecular cloud models. In the context of these models, both OH and CO disappear at current sensitivity limits below an A$_{\rm v}$ of 0.2, but the CO emission does not appear until the volume density exceeds 100-200 cm$^{-3}$. These results demonstrate that a combination of low column density A$_{\rm v}$ and low volume density $n_{H}$ can explain the lack of CO emission along sight lines exhibiting OH emission. The 18-cm OH main lines, with their low critical density of $n^{*}$ $ \sim 1 $ cm$^{-3}$, are collisionally excited over a large fraction of the quiescent galactic environment and, for observations of sufficient sensitivity, provide an optically-thin radio tracer for diffuse H$_2$.

SOFIA/EXES observations of warm H$_2$ at high spectral resolution: witnessing para-to-ortho conversion behind a molecular shock wave in HH7

Spectrally-resolved observations of three pure rotational lines of H$_2$, conducted with the EXES instrument on SOFIA toward the classic bow shock HH7, reveal systematic velocity shifts between the S(5) line of ortho-H$_2$ and the two para-H$_2$ lines [S(4) and S(6)] lying immediately above and below it on the rotational ladder. These shifts, reported here for the first time, imply that we are witnessing the conversion of para-H$_2$ to ortho-H$_2$ within a shock wave driven by an outflow from a young stellar object. The observations are in good agreement with the predictions of models for non-dissociative, C-type molecular shocks. They provide a clear demonstration of the chemical changes wrought by interstellar shock waves, in this case the conversion of para-H$_2$ to ortho-H$_2$ in reactive collisions with atomic hydrogen, and provide among the most compelling evidence yet obtained for C-type shocks in which the flow velocity changes continuously.

Dark Matter that Interacts with Baryons: Experimental Limits on the Interaction Cross-section for 27 Atomic Nuclei, and Resultant Constraints on the Particle Properties

To constrain the properties of dark matter (DM) that interacts with nucleons, we have conducted an experimental search for any anomalous heating of ordinary baryonic matter at 77 K. Our tabletop experiment is motivated by the possibility (discussed in a previous paper) that DM particles with masses in the $\sim 1 - 2 m_{\rm p}$ range could be captured by and concentrated within the Earth. For suitable parameters, this phenomenon could lead to a substantial density $\sim 10^{14}\,\rm cm^{-3}$ of thermalized (300 K) DM particles at Earth's surface that would heat cooler baryonic matter. Our experiment involves precise differential measurements of the evaporation rate of liquid nitrogen in a storage dewar within which various materials are immersed. The results revealed no statistically-significant detections of heating in the 27 elements with molar fractions $> 10^{-5}$ in Earth's crust. For material with the average composition of Earth's crust, our measurements imply a $3 σ$ upper limit of $1.32 \times 10^{-27}\, n_{\rm 14}^{-1} (m_{\rm DM}/2\,m_{\rm p})^{-1/2}\,\rm cm^2$ on the mean cross-section for scattering with thermal HIDM at 300 K, where $10^{14}\,n_{14} \, \rm cm^{-3}$ is the particle density at Earth's surface. In combination with a lower limit on the scattering cross-section, obtained from a consideration of the heat flow through the Earth's crust (Neufeld, Farrar & McKee 2018), our experiment places an upper limit of $1.6 \times 10^{13}\,\rm cm^{-3}$ on the density of DM at the Earth's surface. This in turn, significantly constrains the properties for any DM candidate that interacts with baryons.

High-Resolution SOFIA/EXES Spectroscopy of $\mathrm{SO}_2$ Gas in the Massive Young Stellar Object MonR2 IRS3: Implications for the Sulfur Budget

Sulfur has been observed to be severely depleted in dense clouds leading to uncertainty in the molecules that contain it and the chemistry behind their evolution. Here, we aim to shed light on the sulfur chemistry in young stellar objects (YSOs) by using high-resolution infrared spectroscopy of absorption by the $ν_3$ rovibrational band of SO$_2$ obtained with the Echelon-Cross-Echelle Spectrograph on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. Using local thermodynamic equilibrium models we derive physical parameters for the SO$_2$ gas in the massive YSO MonR2 IRS3. This yields a SO$_2$/$\mathrm{H}$ abundance lower limit of $5.6\pm0.5\times10^{-7}$, or $>\!4\%$ of the cosmic sulfur budget, and an intrinsic line width (Doppler parameter) of $b<3.20\;\mathrm{km\;s}^{-1}$. The small line widths and high temperature ($T_\mathrm{ex}=234\pm15\;\mathrm{K}$) locate the gas in a relatively quiescent region near the YSO, presumably in the hot core where ices have evaporated. This sublimation unlocks a volatile sulfur reservoir (e.g., sulfur allotropes as detected abundantly in comet 67P/Churyumov--Gerasimenko), which is followed by SO$_2$ formation by warm, dense gas-phase chemistry. The narrowness of the lines makes formation of SO$_2$ from sulfur sputtered off grains in shocks less likely toward MonR2 IRS3.

Infrared Detection of Abundant CS in the Hot Core AFGL 2591 at High Spectral Resolution with SOFIA/EXES

We have performed a 5-8 $μ$m spectral line survey of the hot molecular core associated with the massive protostar AFGL 2591, using the Echelon-Cross-Echelle Spectrograph (EXES) on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). We have supplemented these data with a ground based study in the atmospheric M band around 4.5 $μ$m using the iSHELL instrument on the Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), and the full N band window from 8-13 $μ$m using the Texas Echelon Cross Echelle Spectrograph (TEXES) on the IRTF. Here we present the first detection of ro-vibrational transitions of CS in this source. The absorption lines are centred on average around -10 kms$^{-1}$ and the line widths of CS compare well with the hot component of $^{13}$CO (around 10 kms$^{-1}$). Temperatures for CS, hot $^{13}$CO and $^{12}$CO v=1-2 agree well and are around 700 K. We derive a CS abundance of 8$\times$10$^{-3}$ and 2$\times$10$^{-6}$ with respect to CO and H$_2$ respectively. This enhanced CS abundance with respect to the surrounding cloud (1$\times$10$^{-8}$) may reflect sublimation of H$_2$S ice followed by gas-phase reactions to form CS. Transitions are in LTE and we derive a density of $>$10$^7$ cm$^{-3}$, which corresponds to an absorbing region of $<$0.04$''$. EXES observations of CS are likely to probe deeply into the hot core, to the base of the outflow. Submillimeter and infrared observations trace different components of the hot core as revealed by the difference in systemic velocities, line widths and temperatures, as well as the CS abundance.

Dark Matter that Interacts with Baryons: Density Distribution within the Earth and New Constraints on the Interaction Cross-section

For dark matter (DM) particles with masses in the 0.6 - 6 m_p range, we set stringent constraints on the interaction cross-sections for scattering with ordinary baryonic matter. These constraints follow from the recognition that such particles can be captured by - and thermalized within - the Earth, leading to a substantial accumulation and concentration of DM that interact with baryons. Here, we discuss the probability that DM intercepted by the Earth will be captured, the number of DM particles thereby accumulated over Earth's lifetime, the fraction of such particles retained in the face of evaporation, and the density distribution of such particles within the Earth. In the latter context, we note that a previous treatment of the density distribution of DM, presented by Gould and Raffelt and applied subsequently to DM in the Sun, is inconsistent with considerations of hydrostatic equilibrium. Our analysis provides an estimate of the DM particle density at Earth's surface, which may exceed 1.E+14 cm-3 for the mass range under consideration. Based upon our determination of the DM density at Earth's surface, we derive constraints on the scattering cross-sections. These constraints are placed by four considerations: (1) the lifetime of the relativistic proton beam at the Large Hadron collider (LHC); (2) the orbital decay of spacecraft in low Earth orbit (LEO); (3) the vaporization rate of cryogenic liquids in well-insulated storage dewars; and (4) the thermal conductivity of Earth's crust. As an example application of our results, we show that for the scattering cross-sections that were invoked recently in Barkana's original explanation for the anomalously deep 21 cm absorption reported by EDGES, DM particle masses in the 0.6 - 4 m_p range are ruled out.

SOFIA/GREAT Discovery of Terahertz Water Masers

We report the discovery of water maser emission at frequencies above 1 THz. Using the GREAT instrument on SOFIA, we have detected emission in the 1.296411 THz 8(27)-7(34) transition of water toward three oxygen-rich evolved stars: W Hya, U Her, and VY CMa. An upper limit on the 1.296 THz line flux was obtained toward R Aql. Near-simultaneous observations of the 22.23508 GHz 6(16)-5(23) water maser transition were carried out towards all four sources using the Effelsberg 100m telescope. The measured line fluxes imply 22 GHz / 1.296 THz photon luminosity ratios of 0.012, 0.12, and 0.83 respectively for W Hya, U Her, and VY CMa, values that confirm the 22 GHz maser transition to be unsaturated in W Hya and U Her. We also detected the 1.884888 THz 8(45)-7(53) transition toward W Hya and VY CMa, and the 1.278266 THz 7(43)-6(52) transition toward VY CMa. Like the 22 GHz maser transition, all three of the THz emission lines detected here originate from the ortho-H2O spin isomer. Based upon a model for the circumstellar envelope of W Hya, we estimate that stimulated emission is responsible for ~ 85% of the observed 1.296 THz line emission, and thus that this transition may be properly described as a terahertz-frequency maser. In the case of the 1.885 THz transition, by contrast, our W Hya model indicates that the observed emission is dominated by spontaneous radiative decay, even though a population inversion exists.

The cosmic ray ionization rate in the Galactic disk, as determined from observations of molecular ions

We have obtained estimates for the cosmic-ray ionization rate (CRIR) in the Galactic disk, using a detailed model for the physics and chemistry of diffuse interstellar gas clouds to interpret previously-published measurements of the abundance of four molecular ions: ArH$^+$, OH$^+$, H$_2$O$^+$ and H$_3^+$. For diffuse $atomic$ clouds at Galactocentric distances in the range $R_g \sim 4 - 9$ kpc, observations of ArH$^+$, OH$^+$, and H$_2$O$^+$ imply a mean primary CRIR of $(2.2 \pm 0.3) \exp [(R_0-R_g)/4.7\,\rm{kpc}] \times 10^{-16} \rm \, s^{-1}$ per hydrogen atom, where $R_0=8.5$ kpc. Within diffuse $molecular$ clouds observed toward stars in the solar neighborhood, measurements of H$_3^+$ and H$_2$ imply a primary CRIR of $(2.3 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-16}\,\,\rm s^{-1}$ per H atom, corresponding to a total ionization rate per H$_2$ molecule of $(5.3 \pm 1.1) \times 10^{-16}\,\,\rm s^{-1},$ in good accord with previous estimates. These estimates are also in good agreement with a rederivation, presented here, of the CRIR implied by recent observations of carbon and hydrogen radio recombination lines along the sight-line to Cas A. Here, our best-fit estimate for the primary CRIR is $2.9 \times 10^{-16}\,\,\rm s^{-1}$ per H atom. Our results show marginal evidence that the CRIR in diffuse molecular clouds decreases with cloud extinction, $A_{\rm V}({\rm tot})$, with a best-fit dependence $\propto A_{\rm V}({\rm tot})^{-1}$ for $A_{\rm V}({\rm tot}) \ge 0.5$.

The chemistry of interstellar argonium and other probes of the molecular fraction in diffuse clouds

We present a general parameter study, in which the abundance of interstellar argonium (ArH$^+$) is predicted using a model for the physics and chemistry of diffuse interstellar gas clouds. Results have been obtained as a function of UV radiation field, cosmic-ray ionization rate, and cloud extinction. No single set of cloud parameters provides an acceptable fit to the typical ArH$^+$, OH$^+$ and $\rm H_2O^+$ abundances observed in diffuse clouds within the Galactic disk. Instead, the observed abundances suggest that ArH$^+$ resides primarily in a separate population of small clouds of total visual extinction of at most 0.02 mag per cloud, within which the column-averaged molecular fraction is in the range $10^{-5} - 10^{-2}$, while OH$^+$ and $\rm H_2O^+$ reside primarily in somewhat larger clouds with a column-averaged molecular fraction $\sim 0.2$. This analysis confirms our previous suggestion that the argonium molecular ion is a unique tracer of almost purely atomic gas.
