On certain classes of algebras in which centralizers are ideals

This paper is primarily concerned with studying finite-dimensional anti-commutative nonassociative algebras in which every centralizer is an ideal. These are shown to be anti-associative and are classified over a general field $F$; in particular, they are nilpotent of class at most $3$ and metabelian. These results are then applied to show that a Leibniz algebra over a field of charactersitic zero in which all centralizers are ideals is solvable.

Quasi-ideals of Leibniz algebras

A subspace H of a Leibniz algebra L is called a quasi-ideal if [H;K] + [K;H] \subseteq H + K for every subspace K of L. They include ideals and subalgebras of codimension one in L. Quasi-ideals of Lie algebras were classified in two remarkable papers of Amayo. The objective here is to extend those results to the larger class of Leibniz algebras, and to classify those Leibniz algebras in which every subalgebra is a quasi-ideal.

Leibniz A-algebras

A finite-dimensional Lie algebra is called an A-algebra if all of its nilpotent subalgebras are abelian. These arise in the study of constant Yang-Mills potentials and have also been particularly important in relation to the problem of describing residually finite varieties. They have been studied by several authors, including Bakhturin, Dallmer, Drensky, Sheina, Premet, Semenov, Towers and Varea. In this paper we establish generalisations of many of these results to Leibniz algebras.

Lie algebras with nilpotent length greater than that of each of their subalgebras

The main purpose of this paper is to study the finite-dimensional solvable Lie algebras described in its title, which we call {\em minimal non-${\mathcal N}$}. To facilitate this we investigate solvable Lie algebras of nilpotent length $k$, and of nilpotent length $\leq k$, and {\em extreme} Lie algebras, which have the property that their nilpotent length is equal to the number of conjugacy classes of maximal subalgebras. We characterise the minimal non-${\mathcal N}$ Lie algebras in which every nilpotent subalgebra is abelian, and those of solvability index $\leq 3$.

Chief factors of Lie algebras

In group theory the chief factors allow a group to be studied by its representation theory on particularly natural irreducible modules. It is to be expected, therefore, that they will play an important role in the study of Lie algebras. In this article we survey a few of their properties.

On complemented non-abelian chief factors of a Lie algebra

The number of Frattini chief factors or of chief factors which are complemented by a maximal subalgebra of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra $L$ is the same in every chief series for $L$, by \cite[Theorem 2.3]{[11]}. However, this is not the case for the number of chief factors which are simply complemented in $L$. In this paper we determine the possible variation in that number.

On n-maximal subalgebras of Lie algebras

A chain $S_0 < S_1 < \ldots < S_n = L$ is a {\em maximal chain} if each $S_i$ is a maximal subalgebra of $S_{i+1}$. The subalgebra $S_0$ in such a series is called an {\em $n$-maximal} subalgebra. There are many interesting results concerning the question of what certain intrinsic properties of the maximal subalgebras of a Lie algebra $L$ imply about the structure of $L$ itself. Here we consider whether similar results can be obtained by imposing conditions on the $n$-maximal subalgebras of $L$, where $n>1$.

C-sections of Lie algebras

Let $M$ be a maximal subalgebra of a Lie algebra $L$ and $A/B$ a chief factor of $L$ such that $B \subseteq M$ and $A \not \subseteq M$. We call the factor algebra $M \cap A/B$ a $c$-section of $M$. All such $c$-sections are isomorphic, and this concept is related those of $c$-ideals and ideal index previously introduced by the author. Properties of $c$-sections are studied and some new characterizations of solvable Lie algebras are obtained.

Maximal subalgebras and chief factors of Lie algebras

This paper is a continued investigation of the structure of Lie algebras in relation to their chief factors, using concepts that are analogous to corresponding ones in group theory. The first section investigates the structure of Lie algebras with a core-free maximal subalgebra. The results obtained are then used in section two to consider the relationship of two chief factors of L being L-connected, a weaker equivalence relation on the set of chief factors than that of being isomorphic as L-modules. A strengthened form of the Jordan-Holder Theorem in which Frattini chief factors correspond is also established for every Lie algebra. The final section introduces the concept of a crown, a notion introduced in group theory by Gaschutz, and shows that it gives much information about the chief factors

Subalgebras that cover or avoid chief factors of Lie algebras

We call a subalgebra $U$ of a Lie algebra $L$ a $CAP$-subalgebra of $L$ if for any chief factor $H/K$ of $L$, we have $H \cap U = K \cap U$ or $H+U = K+U$. In this paper we investigate some properties of such subalgebras and obtain some characterizations for a finite-dimensional Lie algebra $L$ to be solvable under the assumption that some of its maximal subalgebras or $2$-maximal subalgebras be $CAP$-subalgebras.

On abelian subalgebras and ideals of maximal dimension in supersolvable lie algebras

In this paper, the main objective is to compare the abelian subalgebras and ideals of maximal dimension for finite-dimensional supersolvable Lie algebras. We characterise the maximal abelian subalgebras of solvable Lie algebras and study solvable Lie algebras containing an abelian subalgebra of codimension 2. Finally, we prove that nilpotent Lie algebras with an abelian subalgebra of codimension 3 contain an abelian ideal with the same dimension, provided that the characteristic of the underlying field is not two. Throughout the paper, we also give several examples to clarify some results.

On the Lengths of Certain Chains of Subalgebras in Lie Algebras

In this paper we study the lengths of certain chains of subalgebras of a Lie algebra L: namely, a chief series, a maximal chain of minimal length, a chain of maximal length in which each subalgebra is modular in L, and a chain of maximal length in which each subalgebra is a quasi-ideal of L. In particular we show that, over a field of characteristic zero, a Lie algebra L with radical R has a maximal chain of subalgebras and a chain of subalgebras all of which are modular in L of the same length if and only if L = R, or $\sqrt{F} \not \subseteq F$ and L/R is a direct sum of isomorphic three-dimensional simple Lie algebras.

On certain decompositions of solvable Lie algebras

The author has previously shown that solvable Lie A-algebras and complemented solvable Lie algebras decompose as a vector space direct sum of abelian subalgebras, and their ideals relate nicely to this decomposition. However, neither of these classes is contained in the other. The object of this paper is to find a larger class of algebras, containing each of these classes, in which these same results hold.

On minimal non-elementary Lie algebras

The class of minimal non-elementary Lie algebras over a field F are studied. These are classified when F is algebraically closed and of characteristic different from 2,3. The solvable algebras in this class are also characterised over any perfect field.

Solvable Complemented Lie Algebras

In this paper a characterisation is given of solvable complemented Lie algebras. They decompose as a direct sum of abelian subalgebras and their ideals relate nicely to this decomposition. The class of such algebras is shown to be a formation whose residual is the ideal closure of the prefrattini subalgebras.

Complements of Intervals and Prefrattini Subalgebras of Solvable Lie Algebras

In this paper we study a Lie-theoretic analogue of a generalisation of the prefrattini subgroups introduced by W. Gaschütz. The approach follows that of P. Hauck and H. Kurtzweil for groups, by first considering complements in subalgebra intervals. Conjugacy of these subalgebras is established for a large class of solvable lie algebras.
