Dynamical Schwinger process in a bifrequent electric field of finite duration: survey on amplification

The electron-positron pair production due to the dynamical Schwinger process in a slowly oscillating strong electric field is enhanced by the superposition of a rapidly oscillating weaker electric field. A systematic account of the enhancement by the resulting bifrequent field is provided for the residual phase space distribution. The enhancement is explained by a severe reduction of the suppression in both the tunneling and multiphoton regimes.

Supporting the existence of the QCD critical point by compact star observations

In order to prove the existence of a critical end point (CEP) in the QCD phase diagram it is sufficient to demonstrate that at zero temperature $T=0$ a first order phase transition exists as a function of the baryochemical potential $μ$, since it is established knowledge from ab-initio lattice QCD simulations that at $μ=0$ the transition on the temperature axis is a crossover. We present the argument that the observation of a gap in the mass-radius relationship for compact stars which proves the existence of a so-called third family (aka "mass twins") will imply that the $T=0$ equation of state of compact star matter exhibits a strong first order transition with a latent heat that satisfies $Δε/ε_c \gt 0.6$. Since such a strong first order transition under compact star conditions will remain first order when going to symmetric matter, the observation of a disconnected branch (third family) of compact stars in the mass-radius diagram proves the existence of a CEP in QCD. For the equation of state of the twins the quark matter description is based on a QCD-motivated chiral approach with higher-order quark interactions in the Dirac scalar and vector coupling channels. For hadronic matter we select a relativistic mean-field equation of state with density-dependent couplings. Since the nucleons are treated in the quasi-particle framework, an excluded volume has been included for the nuclear equation of state at super-saturation density that takes into account the finite size of the nucleons. Furthermore we show results of a Bayesian analysis (BA) using disjunct M-R constraints for extracting probability measures for cold, dense matter equations of state. This study reveals that measuring the radii of neutron star twins has the potential to support the existence of a first order phase transition for compact star matter.

High-mass twins & resolution of the reconfinement, masquerade and hyperon puzzles of compact star interiors

We aim at contributing to the resolution of three of the fundamental puzzles related to the still unsolved problem of the structure of the dense core of compact stars (CS): (i) the hyperon puzzle: how to reconcile pulsar masses of $2\,$M$_\odot$ with the hyperon softening of the equation of state (EoS); (ii) the masquerade problem: modern EoS for cold, high density hadronic and quark matter are almost identical; and (iii) the reconfinement puzzle: what to do when after a deconfinement transition the hadronic EoS becomes favorable again? We show that taking into account the compositeness of baryons (by excluded volume and/or quark Pauli blocking) on the hadronic side and confining and stiffening effects on the quark matter side results in an early phase transition to quark matter with sufficient stiffening at high densities which removes all three present-day puzzles of CS interiors. Moreover, in this new class of EoS for hybrid CS falls the interesting case of a strong first order phase transition which results in the observable high mass twin star phenomenon, an astrophysical observation of a critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram.

Cluster virial expansion for quark and nuclear matter

We employ the $Φ-$ derivable approach to many particle systems with strong correlations that can lead to the formation of bound states (clusters) of different size. We define a generic form of $Φ-$ functionals that is fully equivalent to a selfconsistent cluster virial expansion up to the second virial coefficient for interactions among the clusters. As examples we consider nuclei in nuclear matter and hadrons in quark matter, with particular attention to the case of the deuterons in nuclear matter and mesons in quark matter. We derive a generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck equation of state, where the quasiparticle virial expansion is extended to include arbitrary clusters. The approach is applicable to nonrelativistic potential models of nuclear matter as well as to relativistic field theoretic models of quark matter. It is particularly suited for a description of cluster formation and dissociation in hot, dense matter.

Lifting shell structures in the dynamically assisted Schwinger effect in periodic fields

The dynamically assisted pair creation (Schwinger effect) is considered for the superposition of two periodic electric fields acting a finite time interval. We find a strong enhancement by orders of magnitude caused by a weak field with a frequency being a multitude of the strong-field frequency. The strong low-frequency field leads to shell structures which are lifted by the weaker high-frequency field. The resonance type amplification refers to a new, monotonously increasing mode, often hidden in some strong oscillatory transient background which disappears during the smoothly switching off the background fields, thus leaving a pronounced residual shell structure in phase space.

Bayesian Analysis of Hybrid EoS based on Astrophysical Observational Data

We perform a Bayesian analysis of probability measures for compact star equations of state using new, disjunct constraints for mass and radius. The analysis uses a simple parametrization for hybrid equations of state to investigate the possibility of a first order deconfinement transition in compact stars. The latter question is relevant for the possible existence of a critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram under scrutiny in heavy-ion collisions.

Colored condensates deep inside neutron stars

It is demonstrated how in the absence of solutions for QCD under conditions deep inside compact stars an equation of state can be obtained within a model that is built on the basic symmetries of the QCD Lagrangian, in particular chiral symmetry and color symmetry. While in the vacuum the chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken, it gets restored at high densities. Color symmetry, however, gets broken simultaneously by the formation of colorful diquark condensates. It is shown that a strong diquark condensate in cold dense quark matter is essential for supporting the possibility that such states could exist in the recently observed pulsars with masses of 2 $M_\odot$.

Chiral condensate and the structure of hadrons

A model of hadron masses based on the quark structure of hadrons combined with effects of chiral dynamics is used to calculate the 2+1 flavour chiral condensate in the hadron resonance gas framework. Results are discussed in the context of recent lattice QCD data. Improvements of the dynamical models of hadron structure are suggested with the aim to estimate the strange sigma term of the nucleon.

Mass-radius constraints for compact stars and a critical endpoint

We present two types of models for hybrid compact stars composed of a quark core and a hadronic mantle with an abrupt first order phase transition at the interface which are in accordance with the latest astrophysical measurements of two 2 M_sun pulsars. While the first is a schematic one, the second one is based on a QCD motivated nonlocal PNJL model with density-dependent vector coupling strength. Both models support the possibility of so called twin compact stars which have the same mass but different radius and internal structure at high mass (~2 M_sun), provided they exhibit a large jump Δεin the energy density of the first order phase transition fulfilling Δε/ε_crit > 0.6. We conclude that the measurement of high-mass twin stars would support the existence of a first order phase transition in symmetric matter at zero temperature entailing the existence of a critical end point in the QCD phase diagram.

Finite temperature Mott transition in a nonlocal PNJL model

We provide a novel calculation of the Mott effect in non-local PNJL models. We find that the "deconfinement" transition temperature in these models is lower than the Mott temperature. Furthermore, the mass and the width of the $σ$ and the $π$ meson modes is calculated with the result that the width in nonlocal models is in general reduced as compared to local models. Difficulties encountered while attempting to "Wick rotate" covariant models are carefully discussed.

Nonlocal PNJL models and heavy hybrid stars

Nonlocal PNJL models allow for a detailed description of chiral quark dynamics with running quark masses and wave function renormalization in accordance with lattice QCD (LQCD) in vacuum. Their generalization to finite temperature T and chemical potential μ allows to reproduce the μ-dependence of the pseudocritical temperature from LQCD when a nonvanishing vector meson coupling is adjusted. This restricts the region for the critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram and stiffens the quark matter equation of state (EoS). It is demonstrated that the construction of a hybrid EoS for compact star applications within a two-phase approach employing the nonlocal PNJL EoS and an advanced hadronic EoS leads to the masquerade problem. A density dependence of the vector meson coupling is suggested as a possible solution which can be adjusted in a suitable way to describe hybrid stars with a maximum mass in excess of 2 M_sun with a possible early onset of quark deconfinement even in the cores of typical (M ~ 1.4 M_sun) neutron stars.

Thermodynamic instabilities in dynamical quark models with complex conjugate mass poles

We show that the CJT thermodynamic potential of dynamical quark models with a quark propagator represented by complex conjugate mass poles inevitably exhibits thermodynamic instabilities. We find that the minimal coupling of the quark sector to a Polyakov loop potential can strongly suppress but not completely remove such instabilities. This general effect is explicitly demonstrated in the framework of a covariant, chirally symmetric, effective quark model.

X(3872) as a D-D* molecule bound by quark exchange forces

The Bethe-Salpeter equation for the T-Matrix of D-D* scattering is solved with a meson-meson potential that results from 2nd order Born approximation of quark exchange processes. This potential turns out to be complex and energy dependent due to the pole contribution from the coupling to the intermediate J/psi-rho meson pair propagator. As a consequence, a bound state with a mass close to 3.872 GeV occurs in the J/psi-rho continuum. This result suggests that quark exchange forces may provide the solution to the puzzling question for the origin of the interaction which leads to a binding of D and D* mesons in the X(3872) state.

Compact Stars, Heavy Ion Collisions, and Possible Lessons For QCD at Finite Densities

Large neutron star masses as the recently measured $1.97\pm0.04$ M$_\odot$ for PSR J1614-2230 provide a valuable lower limit on the stiffness of the equation of state of dense, nuclear and quark matter. Complementary, the analysis of the elliptic flow in heavy ion collisions suggests an upper limit on the EoS stiffness. We illustrate how this dichotomy permits to constrain parameters of effective EoS models which otherwise could not be derived unambiguously from first principles.

Debye mass and heavy quark potential in a PNJL quark plasma

We calculate the Debye mass for the screening of the heavy quark potential in a plasma of massless quarks coupled to the temporal gluon background governed by the Polyakov loop potential within the PNJL model in RPA approximation. We give a physical motivation for a recent phenomenological fit of lattice data by applying the calculated Debye mass with its suppression in the confined phase due to the Polyakov-loop to a description of the temperature dependence of the singlet free energy for QCD with a heavy quark pair at infinite separation. We compare the result to lattice data.

Hybrid neutron stars based on a modified PNJL model

We discuss a three-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type quantum field theoretical approach to the quark matter equation of state (EoS) with scalar diquark condensate, isoscalar vector mean field and Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t Hooft (KMT) determinant interaction. While often the diquark and vector meson couplings are considered as free parameters, we will fix them here to their values according to the Fierz transformation of a one-gluon exchange interaction. In order to estimate the effect of a possible change in the vacuum pressure of the gluon sector at finite baryon density we exploit a recent modification of the Polyakov-loop NJL (mPNJL) model which introduces a parametric density dependence of the Polyakov-loop potential also at T=0, thus being relevant for compact star physics. We use a Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (DBHF) EoS for the hadronic matter phase and discuss results for mass-radius relationships following from a solution of the TOV equations for such a hybrid EoS in the context of observational constraints from selected objects.

Charmonium in a hot, dense medium

In this lecture we apply a thermodynamic Green function formalism developed in the context of nonrelativistic plasma physics for the case of heavy quarkonia states in strongly correlated quark matter. Besides the traditional explanation of charmonium suppresion by Debye screening of the strong interaction, we discuss further effects of relevance when heavy quarkonia states propagate in a medium where strong correlations persist in the form of hadronic resonances. These effects may be absorbed in the definition of a plasma Hamiltonian, which was the main result of this work. This plasma Hamiltonian governs the in-medium modification of the bound state energy levels as well as the lowering of the continuum edge which leads not only to the traditional Mott effect for the dissociation of bound states in a plasma, but can also be applied for a consistent calculation of the in-medium modification of quarkonium dissociation rates.

Quarkonium dissociation in a PNJL quark plasma

We investigate the Mott effect for heavy quarkonia due to Debye screening of the heavy quark potential in a plasma of massless quarks and antiquarks. The influence of residual color correlation is investigated by coupling the light quark sector to a temporal gauge field driven by the Polyakov loop potential. This leads to an increase of the Mott dissociation temperatures for quarkonia states which stabilizes in particular the excited states, but has marginal effect on the ground states. The temperature dependence of binding energies suggests that the dissciation of the charmonium (bottomonium) ground state by thermal activation sets in at temperatures of 200 MeV (250 MeV).
