Quarkonium dissociation in a thermal medium

We investigate the Mott effect for heavy quarkonia due to Debye screening of the heavy quark potential in a plasma of massless quarks and antiquarks. The influence of residual color correlation is investigated by coupling the light quark sector to a temporal gauge field driven by the Polyakov loop potential. This leads to an increase of the Mott dissociation temperatures for quarkonia states which stabilizes in particular the excited states, but has marginal effect on the ground states.

Mapping the QCD Phase Transition with Accreting Compact Stars

We discuss an idea for how accreting millisecond pulsars could contribute to the understanding of the QCD phase transition in the high-density nuclear matter equation of state (EoS). It is based on two ingredients, the first one being a ``phase diagram'' of rapidly rotating compact star configurations in the plane of spin frequency and mass, determined with state-of-the-art hybrid equations of state, allowing for a transition to color superconducting quark matter. The second is the study of spin-up and accretion evolution in this phase diagram. We show that the quark matter phase transition leads to a characteristic line in the Omega-M plane, the phase border between neutron stars and hybrid stars with a quark matter core. Along this line a change in the pulsar's moment of inertia entails a waiting point phenomenon in the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP) evolution: most of these objects should therefore be found along the phase border in the Omega-M plane, which may be viewed as the AMXP analog of the main sequence in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram for normal stars. In order to prove the existence of a high-density phase transition in the cores of compact stars we need population statistics for AMXP's with sufficiently accurate determination of their masses and spin frequencies.

Single-flavor CSL phase in compact stars

We suggest a scenario where the three light quark flavors are sequentially deconfined under increasing pressure in cold asymmetric nuclear matter as e.g. in neutron stars. The basis for our analysis is a chiral quark matter model of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type with diquark pairing in the spin-1 single flavor (CSL), spin-0 two flavor (2SC) and three flavor (CFL) channels. We find that nucleon dissociation sets in at about the saturation density, n_0, when the down-quark Fermi sea is populated (d-quark dripline) due to the flavor asymmetry induced by beta-equilibrium and charge neutrality. At about 3n_0 u-quarks appear and a two-flavor color superconducting (2SC) phase is formed. The s-quark Fermi sea is populated only at still higher baryon density, when the quark chemical potential is of the order of the dynamically generated strange quark mass. We construct two different hybrid equations of state (EoS) using the Dirac-Brueckner Hartree-Fock (DBHF) approach and the EoS by Shen et al in the nuclear matter sector. The corresponding hybrid star sequences have maximum masses of, respectively, 2.1 and 2.0 M_solar. Two- and three-flavor quark-matter phases exist only in gravitationally unstable hybrid star solutions in the DBHF case, while the Shen-based EoS produce stable configurations with a 2SC phase component in the core of massive stars. Nucleon dissociation due to d-quark drip at the crust-core boundary fulfills basic criteria for a deep crustal heating process which is required to explain superbusts as well as cooling of X-ray transients.

J/$ψ$ absorption in a multicomponent hadron gas

A model for anomalous $J/Ψ$ suppression in high energy heavy ion collisions is presented. As the additional suppression mechanism beyond standard nuclear absorption inelastic $J/Ψ$ scattering with hadronic matter is considered. Hadronic matter is modeled as an evolving multi-component gas of point-like non-interacting particles (MCHG). Estimates for the sound velocity of the MCHG are given and the equation of state is compared with Lattice QCD data in the vicinity of the deconfinement phase transition. The approximate cooling pattern caused by longitudinal expansion is presented. It is shown that under these conditions the resulting $J/Ψ$ suppression pattern agrees well with NA38 and NA50 data.

1-2-3-flavor color superconductivity in compact stars

We suggest a scenario where the three light quark flavors are sequentially deconfined under increasing pressure in cold asymmetric nuclear matter, e.g., as in neutron stars. The basis for our analysis is a chiral quark matter model of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type with diquark pairing in the spin-1 single flavor (CSL) and spin-0 two/three flavor (2SC/CFL) channels, and a Dirac-Brueckner Hartree-Fock (DBHF) approach in the nuclear matter sector. At about 3n_0 u-quarks appear forming a two-flavor color superconducting (2SC) phase, while the s-quark Fermi sea is populated only at still higher baryon density. The hybrid star sequence has a maximum mass of 2.1 M_sun. Two- and three-flavor quark matter phases are found only in gravitationally unstable hybrid star solutions.

Quark matter in compact stars?

Ozel, in a recent reanalysis of EXO 0748-676 observational data (astro-ph/0605106), concluded that quark matter probably does not exist in the center of compact stars. We show that the data is actually consistent with the presence of quark matter in compact stars.

Cooling of Color Superconducting Compact Stars

We review the status of research on the cooling of compact stars, with emphasis on the influence of color superconducting quark matter phases. Although a consistent microscopic approach is not yet available, severe constraints on the phase structure of matter at high densities come from recent mass and cooling observations of compact stars.

The conformal status of $ω=-3/2$ Brans-Dicke cosmology

Following recent fit of supernovae data to Brans-Dicke theory which favours the model with $ω= - 3/2$ \cite{fabris} we discuss the status of this special case of Brans-Dicke cosmology in both isotropic and anisotropic framework. It emerges that the limit $ω= -3/2$ is consistent only with the vacuum field equations and it makes such a Brans-Dicke theory conformally invariant. Then it is an example of the conformal relativity theory which allows the invariance with respect to conformal transformations of the metric. Besides, Brans-Dicke theory with $ω= -3/2$ gives a border between a standard scalar field model and a ghost/phantom model. In this paper we show that in $ω= -3/2$ Brans-Dicke theory, i.e., in the conformal relativity there are no isotropic Friedmann solutions of non-zero spatial curvature except for $k=-1$ case. Further we show that this $k=-1$ case, after the conformal transformation into the Einstein frame, is just the Milne universe and, as such, it is equivalent to Minkowski spacetime. It generally means that only flat models are fully consistent with the field equations. On the other hand, it is shown explicitly that the anisotropic non-zero spatial curvature models of Kantowski-Sachs type are admissible in $ω= -3/2$ Brans-Dicke theory. It then seems that an additional scale factor which appears in anisotropic models gives an extra deegre of freedom and makes it less restrictive than in an isotropic Friedmann case.

Cooling of Neutron Stars with Color Superconducting Quark Cores

We show that within a recently developed nonlocal chiral quark model the critical density for a phase transition to color superconducting quark matter under neutron star conditions can be low enough for these phases to occur in compact star configurations with masses below 1.3 M_sun. We study the cooling of these objects in isolation for different values of the gravitational mass and argue that, if the quark matter phase would allow unpaired quarks, the corresponding hybrid stars would cool too fast. The comparison with observational data puts tight constraints on possible color superconducting quark matter phases. Possible candidates with diquark gaps of the order of 10 keV - 1 MeV such as the "2SC+X" and the color spin locking (CSL) phase are presented.

Cooling of Neutron Stars with Color Superconducting Quark Cores

We show that within a recently developed nonlocal chiral quark model the critical density for a phase transition to color superconducting quark matter under neutron star conditions can be low enough for these phases to occur in compact star configurations with masses below 1.3 M_solar. We study the cooling of these objects in isolation for different values of the gravitational mass. Our equation of state (EoS) allows for 2SC quark matter with a large quark gap \~100 MeV for u and d quarks of two colors that coexists with normal quark matter within a mixed phase in the hybrid star interior. We argue that, if the phases with unpaired quarks were allowed, the corresponding hybrid stars would cool too fast. If they occured for M < 1.3 M_solar, as it follows from our EoS, one could not appropriately describe the neutron star cooling data existing by today. We discuss a "2SC+X" phase, as a possibility to have all quarks paired in two-flavor quark matter under neutron star constraints, where the X-gap is of the order of 10 keV - 1 MeV. Density independent gaps do not allow to fit the cooling data. Only the presence of an X-gap that decreases with increase of the density could allow to appropriately fit the data in a similar compact star mass interval to that following from a purely hadronic model. This scenario is suggested as an alternative explanation of the cooling data in the framework of a hybrid star model.

Conformal relativity versus Brans-Dicke and superstring theories

Conformal relativity theory which is also known as Hoyle-Narlikar theory has recently been given some new interest. It is an extended relativity theory which is invariant with respect to conformal transformations of the metric. In this paper we show how conformal relativity is related to the Brans-Dicke theory and to the low-energy-effective superstring theory. We show that conformal relativity action is equaivalent to a transformed Brans-Dicke action for Brans-Dicke parameter $ω= -3/2$ in contrast to a reduced (graviton-dilaton) low-energy-effective superstring action which corresponds to a Brans-Dicke action with Brans-Dicke parameter $ω= -1$. In fact, Brans-Dicke parameter $ω=-3/2$ gives a border between a standard scalar field evolution and a ghost. We also present basic cosmological solutions of conformal relativity in both Einstein and string frames. The Eintein limit for flat conformal cosmology solutions is unique and it is flat Minkowski space. This requires the scalar field/mass evolution instead of the scale factor evolution in order to explain cosmological redshift. It is interesting that like in ekpyrotic/cyclic models, a possible transition through a singularity in conformal cosmology in the string frame takes place in the weak coupling regime.

Equation of State for Strange Quark Matter in a Separable Model

We present the thermodynamics of a nonlocal chiral quark model with separable 4-fermion interaction for the case of U(3) flavor symmetry within a functional integral approach. The four free parameters of the model are fixed by the chiral condensate, and by the pseudoscalar meson properties (pion mass, kaon mass, pion decay constant). We discuss the T=0 equation of state (EoS) which describes quark confinement (zero quark matter pressure) below the critical chemical potential mu_c=333 MeV. The new result of the present approach is that the strange quark deconfinement is separated from the light quark one and occurs only at a higher chemical potential of mu_{c,s}=492 MeV. We compare the resulting EoS to bag model ones for two and three quark flavors, which have the phase transition to the vacuum with zero pressure also at mu_c. We study quark matter stars in general relativity theory assuming beta-equilibrium with electrons and show that for configurations with masses close to the maximum of stability at M=1.62 ... 1.64 M_{solar} strange quark matter can occur.

Diquark Properties and the TOV Equations

We present various results from including diquark properties and the gap equations into the TOV equations for compact quark objects. One such property is the diquark form factor, which has a strong influence on various quantities. We discuss the consequences for quark stars.

Conformal Cosmology and Supernova Data

We define the cosmological parameters $H_{c,0}$, $Ω_{m,c}$ and $Ω_{Λ, c}$ within the Conformal Cosmology as obtained by the homogeneous approximation to the conformal-invariant generalization of Einstein's General Relativity theory. We present the definitions of the age of the universe and of the luminosity distance in the context of this approach. A possible explanation of the recent data from distant supernovae Ia without a cosmological constant is presented.

Deconfinement and Hadron Properties at Extremes of Temperature and Density

After introducing essential, qualitative concepts and results, we discuss the application of Dyson-Schwinger equations to QCD at finite T and mu. We summarise the calculation of the critical exponents of two-light-flavour QCD using the chiral and thermal susceptibilities; and an algebraic model that elucidates the origin of an anticorrelation between the mu- and T-dependence of a range of meson properties. That model also provides an algebraic understanding of why the finite-T behaviour of bulk thermodynamic properties is mirrored in their mu-dependence, and why meson masses decrease with mu even though f_pi and - increase. The possibility of diquark condensation is canvassed. Its realisation is uncertain because it is contingent upon an assumption about the quark-quark scattering kernel that is demonstrably false in some applications; e.g., it predicts the existence of coloured diquarks in the strong interaction spectrum, which are not observed.

Continuum study of deconfinement at finite temperature

Deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration are explored in a confining, renormalisable, Dyson-Schwinger equation model of two-flavour QCD. An order parameter for deconfinement is introduced and used to establish that, in the chiral limit, deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration are coincident at $T_c\approx 150\,$MeV. The transitions are second order and each has the same critical exponent: $β\approx 0.3$. The deconfinement transition is found to exhibit sensitivity to the current-quark mass. $f_π$ and $m_π$ change by no more than 10\% for $T<0.7\,T_c$, however, as $T\to T_c$, thermal fluctuations cause the pion bound state contribution to the four-point quark-antiquark correlation function to disappear.
