Effective SPR property for surface diffeomorphisms and three-dimensional vector fields

In this paper, we prove that ergodic measures with large entropy give uniformly large measure to the set of points with simultaneously long unstable and long stable manifolds. As a consequence, for $C^{\infty}$ surface diffeomorphisms, we establish an effective version of the SPR property. For $C^{\infty}$ three-dimensional flows without singularities, we prove the finiteness of equilibrium measures for admissible potentials whose variation is strictly less than half of the topological entropy.

Generalized $u$-Gibbs measures for $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms

We show that for every $C^\infty$ diffeomorphism of a closed Riemannian manifold, if there exists a positive volume set of points which admit some expansion with a positive Lyapunov exponent (in a weak sense) then there exists an invariant probability measure with a disintegration by absolutely continuous conditionals on smoothly embedded disks subordinated to unstable leaves. As an application, we prove a strong version of the Viana conjecture in any dimension. Our methods include developing a quantitative approach to high-dimensional Yomdin theory which allows to control the geometry of disks, and introducing a notion of ``measured disks" in order to provide a disintegration by absolutely continuous conditionals. In particular, we provide also a new proof for the case of surfaces (a previous result by the second author) proving directly the absolute continuity of conditionals rather than mere entropy estimates.

Multiplicity of topological systems

We define the topological multiplicity of an invertible topological system $(X,T)$ as the minimal number $k$ of real continuous functions $f_1,\cdots, f_k$ such that the functions $f_i\circ T^n$, $n\in\mathbb Z$, $1\leq i\leq k,$ span a dense linear vector space in the space of real continuous functions on $X$ endowed with the supremum norm. We study some properties of topological systems with finite multiplicity. After giving some examples, we investigate the multiplicity of subshifts with linear growth complexity.

SRB measures for partially hyperbolic systems with one-dimensional center subbundles

For a partially hyperbolic attractor with a center bundle splitting in a dominatedway into one-dimensional subbundles we show that for Lebesgue almost every point there is anempirical measure from $x$ with a SRB component. Moreover if the center exponents are nonzero, then $x$ lies in the basin of an ergodic hyperbolic SRB measure and there are only finitely many such measures. This gives another proof of the existence of SRB measures in this context, which was established firstly in [11] by using random perturbations. Moreover this generalizes results of [15,18] which deal with a single one-dimensional center subbundle.

SRB measures for mostly expanding partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms via the variational approach

By using the variational approach, we prove the existence of Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen measures for partially hyperbolic $\mathcal C^1$ diffeomorphisms with mostly expanding properties. The same conclusion holds true if one considers a dominated splitting $E\oplus F$, where $\dim E=1$ and $F$ is mostly expanding. When the diffeomorphisms are $\mathcal C^{1+α}$, we prove the basin covering property for both cases.

Maximal measure and entropic continuity of Lyapunov exponents for $C^r$ surface diffeomorphisms with large entropy

We prove a finite smooth version of the entropic continuity of Lyapunov exponents of Buzzi-Crovisier-Sarig for $C^\infty$ surface diffeomorphisms [9]. As a consequence we show that any $C^r$, $r > 1$, smooth surface diffeomorphism $f$ with $h_{top}(f) > \frac{1}{r} \limsup_n \frac{1}{n} \log^+ \|df^n\|$ admits a measure of maximal entropy. We also prove the $C^r$ continuity of the topological entropy at $f$.

SRB measures for C $\infty$ surface diffeomorphisms

A $C^\infty$ surface diffeomorphism admits a SRB measure if and only if the set \left \{x, \limsup_n \frac{1}{ n} \log \|d_xf^n \|> 0\right\} has positive Lebesgue measure. Moreover the basins of the ergodic SRB measures are covering this set Lebesgue almost everywhere. We also obtain similar results for $C^r$ surface diffeomorphisms with $+\infty>r>1$.

Topological mean dimension of induced systems

For a topological system with positive topological entropy, we show that the induced transformation on the set of probability measures endowed with the weak-$*$ topology has infinite topological mean dimension. We also estimate the rate of divergence of the entropy with respect to the Wasserstein distance when the scale goes to zero.

Mean dimension of continuous cellular automata

We investigate the mean dimension of a cellular automaton (CA for short) with a compact non-discrete space of states. A formula for the mean dimension is established for (near) strongly permutative, permutative algebraic and unit one-dimensional automata. In higher dimensions, a CA permutative algebraic or having a spaceship has infinite mean dimension. However, building on Meyerovitch's example, we give an example of algebraic surjective cellular automaton with positive finite mean dimension.

Zero-dimensional and symbolic extensions of topological flows

A zero-dimensional (resp. symbolic) flow is a suspension flow over a zero-dimensional system (resp. a subshift). We show that any topological flow admits a principal extension by a zero-dimensional flow. Following [Bur19] we deduce that any topological flow admits an extension by a symbolic flow if and only if its time-$t$ map admits an extension by a subshift for any $t\neq 0$. Moreover the existence of such an extension is preserved under orbit equivalence for regular topological flows, but this property does not hold more true for singular flows. Finally we investigate symbolic extensions for singular suspension flows. In particular, the suspension flow over the full shift on $\{0,1\}^{\mathbb Z}$ with a roof function $f$ vanishing at the zero sequence $0^\infty$ admits a principal symbolic extension or not depending on the smoothness of $f$ at $0^\infty$.

Rescaled entropy of cellular automata

For a d-dimensional cellular automaton with d $\ge$ 1 we introduce a rescaled entropy which estimates the growth rate of the entropy at small scales by generalizing previous approaches [1, 9]. We also define a notion of Lyapunov exponent and proves a Ruelle inequality as already established for d = 1 in [16, 15]. Finally we generalize the entropy formula for 1-dimensional permutative cellular automata [18] to the rescaled entropy in higher dimensions. This last result extends recent works [17] of Shinoda and Tsukamoto dealing with the metric mean dimensions of two-dimensional symbolic dynamics.

Symbolic extensions for 3-dimensional diffeomorphisms

We prove that every $\mathcal{C}^{r}$ diffeomorphism with $r>1$ on a three-dimensional manifold admits symbolic extensions, i.e. topological extensions which are subshifts over a finite alphabet. This answers positively a conjecture of Downarowicz and Newhouse in dimension three.

Embedding asymptotically expansive system

We prove a Krieger like embedding theorem for asymptotically expansive systems with the small boundary property. We show that such a system $(X; T)$ embeds in the $K$-full shift with $h_{top}(T) < \log K $ and $\sharp Per_n(X; T) \leq \sharp Per_n(\{1,...,K\}^{\mathbb{Z}};σ)$ for any integer $n$. The embedding is in general not continuous (unless the system is expansive and $X$ is zero-dimensional) but the induced map on the set of invariant measures is a topological embedding. It is shown that this property implies asymptotical expansiveness. We prove also that the inverse of the embedding map may be continuously extended to a faithful principal symbolic extension.

Uniform generators, symbolic extensions with an embedding, and structure of periodic orbits

For a topological dynamical system $(X, T)$ we define a uniform generator as a finite measurable partition such that the symmetric cylinder sets in the generated process shrink in diameter uniformly to zero. The problem of existence and optimal cardinality of uniform generators has lead us to new challenges in the theory of symbolic extensions. At the beginning we show that uniform generators can be identified with so-called symbolic extensions with an embedding, i.e., symbolic extensions admitting an equivariant measurable selector from preimages. From here we focus on such extensions and we strive to characterize the collection of the corresponding extension entropy functions on invariant measures. For aperiodic zero-dimensional systems we show that this collection coincides with that of extension entropy functions in arbitrary symbolic extensions, which, by the general theory of symbolic extensions, is known to coincide with the collection of all affine superenvelopes of the entropy structure of the system. In particular, we recover, after [Bu16], that an aperiodic zero-dimensional system is asymptotically h- expansive if and only if it admits an isomorphic symbolic extension. Next we pass to systems with periodic points, and we introduce the notion of a period tail structure, which captures the local growth rate of periodic orbits. Finally, we succeed in precisely identifying the wanted collection of extension entropy functions in symbolic extensions with an embedding: these are all the affine superenvelopes of the usual entropy structure which lie above certain threshold function determined by the period tail structure. This characterization allows us, among other things, to give estimates (and in examples to compute precisely) the optimal cardinality of a uniform generator.

Periodic expansiveness of smooth surface diffeomorphisms and applications

We prove that periodic asymptotic expansiveness introduced in \cite{em} implies the equidistribution of periodic points to measures of maximal entropy. Then following Yomdin's approach \cite{Yom} we show by using semi-algebraic tools that $C^\infty$ interval maps and $C^\infty$ surface diffeomorphisms satisfy this expansiveness property respectively for repelling and saddle hyperbolic points with Lyapunov exponents uniformly away from zero.
