Jumps of entropy for $C^r$ interval maps

We study the jump of topological entropy for $C^r$ interval or circle maps. We prove in particular that the topological entropy is continuous at any $f \in C^r([0; 1])$ with $h_{top}(f) > \frac{\log^+ \|f'\|_\infty}{r}$. To this end we study the continuity of the entropy of the Buzzi-Hofbauer diagrams associated to $C^r$ interval maps.

Asymptotic $h$-expansiveness rate of $C^\infty$ maps

We study the rate of convergence to zero of the tail entropy of $C^\infty$ maps. We give an upper bound of this rate in terms of the growth in $k$ of the derivative of order $k$ and give examples showing the optimality of the established rate of convergence. We also consider the case of multimodal maps of the interval. Finally we prove that homoclinic tangencies give rise to $C^r$ $(r\geq 2)$ robustly non $h$-expansive dynamical systems.

Symbolic extensions in intermediate smoothness on surfaces

We prove that $\mathcal{C}^r$ maps with $r>1$ on a compact surface have symbolic extensions, i.e. topological extensions which are subshifts over a finite alphabet. More precisely we give a sharp upper bound on the so-called symbolic extension entropy, which is the infimum of the topological entropies of all the symbolic extensions. This answers positively a conjecture of S.Newhouse and T.Downarowicz in dimension two and improves a previous result of the author \cite{burinv}.

$\mathcal{C}^2$ surface diffeomorphisms have symbolic extensions

We prove that $\mathcal{C}^2$ surface diffeomorphisms have symbolic extensions, i.e. topological extensions which are subshifts over a finite alphabet. Following the strategy of T.Downarowicz and A.Maass \cite{Dow} we bound the local entropy of ergodic measures in terms of Lyapunov exponents. This is done by reparametrizing Bowen balls by contracting maps in a approach combining hyperbolic theory and Yomdin's theory.

Orders of accumulation of entropy

For a continuous map $T$ of a compact metrizable space $X$ with finite topological entropy, the order of accumulation of entropy of $T$ is a countable ordinal that arises in the context of entropy structure and symbolic extensions. We show that every countable ordinal is realized as the order of accumulation of some dynamical system. Our proof relies on functional analysis of metrizable Choquet simplices and a realization theorem of Downarowicz and Serafin. Further, if $M$ is a metrizable Choquet simplex, we bound the ordinals that appear as the order of accumulation of entropy of a dynamical system whose simplex of invariant measures is affinely homeomorphic to $M$. These bounds are given in terms of the Cantor-Bendixson rank of $\overline{\ex(M)}$, the closure of the extreme points of $M$, and the relative Cantor-Bendixson rank of $\overline{\ex(M)}$ with respect to $\ex(M)$. We also address the optimality of these bounds.

A Proof of Gromov's Algebraic Lemma

Following the analysis of differentiable mappings of Y. Yomdin, M. Gromov has stated a very elegant "Algebraic Lemma" which says that the "differentiable size" of an algebraic subset may be bounded in terms only of its dimension, degree and diameter. We give a complete and elementary proof of Gromov's result using the ideas presented in his Bourbaki talk as well as other necessary ingredients.
