Global Sobolev inequalities and Degenerate P-Laplacian equations

We prove that a local, weak Sobolev inequality implies a global Sobolev estimate using existence and regularity results for a family of $p$-Laplacian equations. Given $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, let $ρ$ be a quasi-metric on $Ω$, and let $Q$ be an $n\times n$ semi-definite matrix function defined on $Ω$. For an open set $Θ\SubsetΩ$, we give sufficient conditions to show that if the local weak Sobolev inequality % \[ \Big(\fint_B |f|^{pσ}dx\Big)^\frac{1}{pσ} \leq C\Big[ r(B)\fint_B |\sqrt{Q}\nabla f|^pdx + \fint_B |f|^pdx\Big]^\frac{1}{p} \] holds for some $σ>1$, all balls $B\subset Θ$, and functions $f\in Lip_0(Θ)$, then the global Sobolev inequality \[ \Big(\int_Θ |f|^{pσ}dx\Big)^\frac{1}{pσ} \leq C\Big(\int_Θ |\sqrt{Q}\nabla f(x)|^pdx\Big)^\frac{1}{p} \] also holds. Central to our proof is showing the existence and boundedness of solutions of the Dirichlet problem \[ \begin{cases} \mx_{p,τ} u & = φ\text{in} Θ\\ u & = 0 \text{in} \partial Θ, \end{cases} \] where $\mx_{p,τ}$ is a degenerate $p$-Laplacian operator with a zero order term: \[ \mx_{p,τ} u = \text{div}\Big(\big|\sqrt{Q} \nabla u\big|^{p-2}Q\nabla u\Big) - τ|u|^{p-2}u. \]

On the Kato problem and extensions for degenerate elliptic operators

We study the Kato problem for degenerate divergence form operators. This was begun by Cruz-Uribe and Rios who proved that given an operator $L_w=-w^{-1}{\rm div}(A\nabla)$, where $w\in A_2$ and $A$ is a $w$-degenerate elliptic measure (i.e, $A=w\,B$ with $B$ an $n\times n$ bounded, complex-valued, uniformly elliptic matrix), then $L_w$ satisfies the weighted estimate $\|\sqrt{L_w}f\|_{L^2(w)}\approx\|\nabla f\|_{L^2(w)}$. Here we solve the $L^2$-Kato problem: under some additional conditions on the weight $w$, the following unweighted $L^2$-Kato estimates hold $$ \|L_w^{1/2}f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)}\approx\|\nabla f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)}. $$ This extends the celebrated solution to the Kato conjecture by Auscher, Hofmann, Lacey, McIntosh, and Tchamitchian, allowing the differential operator to have some degeneracy in its ellipticity. For example, we consider the family of operators $L_γ=-|x|^γ{\rm div}(|x|^{-γ}B(x)\nabla)$, where $B$ is any bounded, complex-valued, uniformly elliptic matrix. We prove that there exists $ε>0$, depending only on dimension and the ellipticity constants, such that $$ \|L_γ^{1/2}f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)}\approx\|\nabla f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)}, \qquad -ε<γ<\frac{2\,n}{n+2}. $$ This gives a range of $γ$'s for which the classical Kato square root $γ=0$ is an interior point. Our main results are obtained as a consequence of a rich Calderón-Zygmund theory developed for some operators associated with $L_w$. These results, which are of independent interest, establish estimates on $L^p(w)$, and also on $L^p(v\,dw)$ with $v\in A_\infty(w)$, for the associated semigroup, its gradient, the functional calculus, the Riesz transform, and square functions. As an application, we solve some unweighted $L^2$-Dirichlet, Regularity and Neumann boundary value problems for degenerate elliptic operators.

Modular inequalities for the maximal operator in variable Lebesgue spaces

A now classical result in the theory of variable Lebesgue spaces due to Lerner [A. K. Lerner, On modular inequalities in variable $L^p$ spaces, Archiv der Math. 85 (2005), no. 6, 538-543] is that a modular inequality for the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function in $L^{p(\cdot)}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ holds if and only if the exponent is constant. We generalize this result and give a new and simpler proof. We then find necessary and sufficient conditions for the validity of the weaker modular inequality \[ \int_ΩMf(x)^{p(x)}\,dx \ \leq c_1 \int_Ω|f(x)|^{q(x)}\,dx + c_2, \] where $c_1,\,c_2$ are non-negative constants and $Ω$ is any measurable subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$. As a corollary we get sufficient conditions for the modular inequality \[ \int_Ω|Tf(x)|^{p(x)}\,dx \ \leq c_1 \int_Ω|f(x)|^{q(x)}\,dx + c_2, \] where $T$ is any operator that is bounded on $L^p(Ω)$, $1<p<\infty$.

A multilinear reverse Hölder inequality with applications to multilinear weighted norm inequalities

In this note we prove a multilinear version of the reverse Hölder inequality in the theory of Muckenhoupt $A_p$ weights. We give two applications of this inequality to the study of multilinear weighted norm inequalities. First, we prove a structure theorem for multilinear $A_{\vec{p}}$ weights; second, we give a new sufficient condition for multilinear, two-weight norm inequalities for the maximal operator.

Two weight bump conditions for matrix weights

In this paper we extend the theory of two weight, $A_p$ bump conditions to the setting of matrix weights. We prove two matrix weight inequalities for fractional maximal operators, fractional and singular integrals, sparse operators and averaging operators. As applications we prove quantitative, one weight estimates, in terms of the matrix $A_p$ constant, for singular integrals, and prove a Poincaré inequality related to those that appear in the study of degenerate elliptic PDEs.

The boundedness of multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators on weighted and variable Hardy spaces

We establish the boundedness of the multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators from a product of weighted Hardy spaces into a weighted Hardy or Lebesgue space. Our results generalize to the weighted setting results obtained by Grafakos and Kalton (Collect. Math. 2001) and recent work by the third author, Grafakos, Nakamura, and Sawano. As part of our proof we provide a finite atomic decomposition theorem for weighted Hardy spaces, which is interesting in its own right. As a consequence of our weighted results, we prove the corresponding estimates on variable Hardy spaces. Our main tool is a multilinear extrapolation theorem that generalizes a result of the first author and Naibo (Differential Integral Equations 2016).

Poincare Inequalities and Neumann Problems for the p-Laplacian

We prove an equivalence between weighted Poincare inequalities and the existence of weak solutions to a Neumann problem related to a degenerate p- Laplacian. The Poincare inequalities are formulated in the context of degenerate Sobolev spaces defined in terms of a quadratic form, and the associated matrix is the source of the degeneracy in the p-Laplacian.

Limited range multilinear extrapolation with applications to the bilinear Hilbert transform

We prove a limited range, off-diagonal extrapolation theorem that generalizes a number of results in the theory of Rubio de Francia extrapolation, and use this to prove a limited range, multilinear extrapolation theorem. We give two applications of this result to the bilinear Hilbert transform. First, we give sufficient conditions on a pair of weights $w_1,\,w_2$ for the bilinear Hilbert transform to satisfy weighted norm inequalities of the form \[ BH : L^{p_1}(w_1^{p_1}) \times L^{p_2}(w_2^{p_2}) \longrightarrow L^p(w^p), \] where $w=w_1w_2$ and $\frac{1}{p}=\frac{1}{p_1}+\frac{1}{p_2}<\frac{3}{2}$. This improves the recent results of Culiuc et al. by increasing the families of weights for which this inequality holds and by pushing the lower bound on $p$ from $1$ down to $\frac{2}{3}$, the critical index from the unweighted theory of the bilinear Hilbert transform. Second, as an easy consequence of our method we obtain that the bilinear Hilbert transform satisfies some vector-valued inequalities with Muckenhoupt weights. This reproves and generalizes some of the vector-valued estimates obtained by Benea and Muscalu in the unweighted case. We also generalize recent results of Carando, et al. on Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund estimates for multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators.

Extrapolation in the scale of generalized reverse Hölder weights

We develop a theory of extrapolation for weights that satisfy a generalized reverse Hölder inequality in the scale of Orlicz spaces. This extends previous results by Auscher and Martell [2] on limited range extrapolation. As an application, we show that a number of weighted norm inequalities for linear and bilinear operators can be proved using our extrapolation theorem.

Embeddings between grand, small and variable Lebesgue spaces

We give conditions on the exponent function $p(\cdot)$ that imply the existence of embeddings between grand, small and variable Lebesgue spaces. We construct examples to show that our results are close to optimal. Our work extends recent results by the second author, Rakotoson and Sbordone.

Necessary conditions for the boundedness of linear and bilinear commutators on Banach function spaces

In this article we extend recent results by the first author on the necessity of $BMO$ for the boundedness of commutators on the classical Lebesgue spaces. We generalize these results to a large class of Banach function spaces. We show that with modest assumptions on the underlying spaces and on the operator $T$, if the commutator $[b,T]$ is bounded, then the function $b$ is in $BMO$.

Kato-Ponce inequalities on weighted and variable Lebesgue spaces

We prove fractional Leibniz rules and related commutator estimates in the settings of weighted and variable Lebesgue spaces. Our main tools are uniform weighted estimates for sequences of square-function-type operators and a bilinear extrapolation theorem. We also give applications of the extrapolation theorem to the boundedness on variable Lebesgue spaces of certain bilinear multiplier operators and singular integrals.

The Boundedness of fractional maximal operators on variable Lebesgue spaces over spaces of homogeneous type

Given a space of homogeneous type we give sufficient conditions on a variable exponent {p(.)} so that the fractional maximal operator {M_η} maps {L^{p(.)}(X)} to {L^{q(.)}(X)}, where {1/p(.) - 1/q(.) = η}. In the endpoint case we also prove the corresponding weak type inequality. As an application we prove norm inequalities for the fractional integral operator {I_η}. Our proof for the fractional maximal operator uses the theory of dyadic cubes on spaces of homogeneous type, and even in the Euclidean setting it is simpler than existing proofs. For the fractional integral operator we extend a pointwise inequality of Welland to spaces of homogeneous type. Our work generalizes results from the Euclidean case and extends recent work by Adamowicz, et al. on the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator on spaces of homogeneous type.

Matrix $A_p$ weights, degenerate Sobolev spaces, and mappings of finite distortion

We study degenerate Sobolev spaces where the degeneracy is controlled by a matrix $A_p$ weight. This class of weights was introduced by Nazarov, Treil and Volberg, and degenerate Sobolev spaces with matrix weights have been considered by several authors for their applications to PDEs. We prove that the classical Meyers-Serrin theorem, H = W, holds in this setting. As applications we prove partial regularity results for weak solutions of degenerate p-Laplacian equations, and in particular for mappings of finite distortion.

Two weight norm inequalities for fractional integral operators and commutators

In these lecture notes we describe some recent work on two weight norm inequalities for fractional integral operators, also known as Riesz potentials, and for commutators of fractional integrals. These notes are based on three lectures delivered at the 6th International Course of Mathematical Analysis in Andalucia, held in Antequera, Spain, September 8-12, 2014. They are, however, greatly expanded to include both new results and many details that I did not present in my lectures due to time constraints.
