Greedy bases in variable Lebesgue spaces

We compute the right and left democracy functions of admissible wavelet bases in variable Lebesgue spaces defined on $R^n$. As an application we give Lebesgue type inequalities for these wavelet bases. We also show that our techniques can be easily modified to prove analogous results for weighted variable Lebesgue spaces and variable exponent Triebel-Lizorkin spaces.

Extrapolation and weighted norm inequalities in the variable Lebesgue spaces

We extend the theory of Rubio de Francia extrapolation, including off-diagonal, limited range, and $A_{\infty}$ extrapolation, to the weighted variable Lebesgue spaces. As a consequence we are able to show that a number of different operators from harmonic analysis are bounded on these spaces. The proofs of our extrapolation results are developed in a way that outlines a general approach to proving extrapolation theorems on other Banach function spaces.

Logarithmic bump conditions for Calderón-Zygmund Operators on spaces of homogeneous type

We establish two-weight norm inequalities for singular integral operators defined on spaces of homogeneous type. We do so first when the weights satisfy a double bump condition and then when the weights satisfy separated logarithmic bump conditions. Our results generalize recent work on the Euclidean case, but our proofs are simpler even in this setting. The other interesting feature of our approach is that we are able to prove the separated bump results (which always imply the corresponding double bump results) as a consequence of the double bump theorem.

A fractional Muckenhoupt-Wheeden theorem and its consequences

In the 1970s Muckenhoupt and Wheeden made several conjectures relating two weight norm inequalities for the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator to such inequalities for singular integrals. Using techniques developed for the recent proof of the $A_2$ conjecture we prove a related pair of conjectures linking the Riesz potential and the fractional maximal operator. As a consequence we are able to prove a number of sharp one and two weight norm inequalities for the Riesz potential.

Logarithmic bump conditions and the two weight boundedness of Calderón-Zygmund operators

We prove that if a pair of weights $(u,v)$ satisfies a sharp $A_p$-bump condition in the scale of log bumps and certain loglog bumps, then Haar shifts map $L^p(v)$ into $L^p(u)$ with a constant quadratic in the complexity of the shift. This in turn implies the two weight boundedness for all Calderón-Zygmund operators. This gives a partial answer to a long-standing conjecture. We also give a partial result for a related conjecture for weak-type inequalities. To prove our main results we combine several different approaches to these problems; in particular we use many of the ideas developed to prove the $A_2$ conjecture. As a byproduct of our work we also disprove a conjecture by Muckenhoupt and Wheeden on weak-type inequalities for the Hilbert transform. This is closely related to the recent counterexamples of Reguera, Scurry and Thiele.

Regularity of solutions to degenerate $p$-Laplacian equations

We prove regularity results for solutions of the equation \[div(< AXu,X u>^{(p-2)/2} AX u) = 0,\] $1 \leq Λw(x)^{2/p}|ξ|^2,\] $w \in A_p$, then we show that solutions are locally Hölder continuous. If the degeneracy is of the form \[ k(x)^{-2/p'}|ξ|^2\leq < A(x)ξ,ξ>\leq k(x)^{2/p}|ξ|^2, \] $k\in A_{p'}\cap RH_τ$,where $τ$ depends on the homogeneous dimension, then the solutions are continuous almost everywhere, and we give examples to show that this is the best result possible. We give an application to maps of finite distortion.

Variable Hardy Spaces

We develop the theory of variable exponent Hardy spaces. Analogous to the classical theory, we give equivalent definitions in terms of maximal operators. We also show that distributions in these spaces have an atomic decomposition including a "finite" decomposition; this decomposition is more like the decomposition for weighted Hardy spaces due to Stromberg and Torchinsky than the classical atomic decomposition. As an application of the atomic decomposition we show that singular integral operators are bounded on variable Hardy spaces with minimal regularity assumptions on the exponent function.

One and two weight norm inequalities for Riesz potentials

We consider weighted norm inequalities for the Riesz potentials $I_α$, also referred to as fractional integral operators. First we prove mixed $A_p$-$A_\infty$ type estimates in the spirit of [13, 15, 17]. Then we prove strong and weak type inequalities in the case $p<q$ using the so-called log bump conditions. These results complement the strong type inequalities of Pérez [30] and answer a conjecture from [3]. For both sets of results our main tool is a corona decomposition adapted to fractional averages.

A note on the off-diagonal Muckenhoupt-Wheeden conjecture

We obtain the off-diagonal Muckenhoupt-Wheeden conjecture for Calderón-Zygmund operators. Namely, given $1<p<q<\infty$ and a pair of weights $(u,v)$, if the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function satisfies the following two weight inequalities: $$ M : L^p(v) \rightarrow L^q(u) \quad \text{and} \quad M: L^{q'}(u^{1-q'}) \rightarrow L^{p'}(v^{1-p'}), $$ then any Calderón-Zygmund operator $T$ and its associated truncated maximal operator $T_\star$ are bounded from $L^p(v)$ to $L^q(u)$. Additionally, assuming only the second estimate for $M$ then $T$ and $T_\star$ map continuously $L^p(v)$ into $L^{q,\infty}(u)$. We also consider the case of generalized Haar shift operators and show that their off-diagonal two weight estimates are governed by the corresponding estimates for the dyadic Hardy-Littlewood maximal function.

Sharp norm inequalities for commutators of classical operators

We prove several sharp weighted norm inequalities for commutators of classical operators in harmonic analysis. We find sufficient $A_p$-bump conditions on pairs of weights $(u,v)$ such that $[b,T]$, $b\in BMO$ and $T$ a singular integral operator (such as the Hilbert or Riesz transforms), maps $L^p(v)$ into $L^p(u)$. Because of the added degree of singularity, the commutators require a "double log bump" as opposed to that of singular integrals, which only require single log bumps. For the fractional integral operator $I_\al$ we find the sharp one-weight bound on $[b,I_\al]$, $b\in BMO$, in terms of the $A_{p,q}$ constant of the weight. We also prove sharp two-weight bounds for $[b,I_\al]$ analogous to those of singular integrals. We prove two-weight weak-type inequalities for $[b,T]$ and $[b,I_\al]$ for pairs of factored weights. Finally we construct several examples showing our bounds are sharp.

Sharp weighted estimates for classical operators

We give a new proof of the sharp one weight $L^p$ inequality for any operator $T$ that can be approximated by Haar shift operators such as the Hilbert transform, any Riesz transform, the Beurling-Ahlfors operator. Our proof avoids the Bellman function technique and two weight norm inequalities. We use instead a recent result due to A. Lerner to estimate the oscillation of dyadic operators. Our method is flexible enough to prove the corresponding sharp one-weight norm inequalities for some operators of harmonic analysis: the maximal singular integrals associated to $T$, Dyadic square functions and paraproducts, and the vector-valued maximal operator of C. Fefferman-Stein. Also we can derive a very sharp two-weight bump type condition for $T$.

Sharp weighted estimates for approximating dyadic operators

We give a new proof of the sharp weighted $L^2$ inequality ||T||_{L^2(w)} \leq c [w]_{A_2} where $T$ is the Hilbert transform, a Riesz transform, the Beurling-Ahlfors operator or any operator that can be approximated by Haar shift operators. Our proof avoids the Bellman function technique and two weight norm inequalities. We use instead a recent result due to A. Lerner to estimate the oscillation of dyadic operators.
