Relating the Archetypes of Logarithmic Conformal Field Theory

Logarithmic conformal field theory is a rich and vibrant area of modern mathematical physics with well-known applications to both condensed matter theory and string theory. Our limited understanding of these theories is based upon detailed studies of various examples that one may regard as archetypal. These include the c=-2 triplet model, the Wess-Zumino-Witten model on SL(2;R) at level k=-1/2, and its supergroup analogue on GL(1|1). Here, the latter model is studied algebraically through representation theory, fusion and modular invariance, facilitating a subsequent investigation of its cosets and extended algebras. The results show that the archetypes of logarithmic conformal field theory are in fact all very closely related, as are many other examples including, in particular, the SL(2|1) models at levels 1 and -1/2. The conclusion is then that the archetypal examples of logarithmic conformal field theory are practically all the same, so we should not expect that their features are in any way generic. Further archetypal examples must be sought.

Modular Data and Verlinde Formulae for Fractional Level WZW Models I

The modular properties of fractional level affine sl(2)-theories and, in particular, the application of the Verlinde formula, have a long and checkered history in conformal field theory. Recent advances in logarithmic conformal field theory have led to the realisation that problems with fractional level models stem from trying to build the theory with an insufficiently rich category of representations. In particular, the appearance of negative fusion coefficients for admissible highest weight representations is now completely understood. Here, the modular story for certain fractional level theories is completed. Modular transformations are derived for the complete set of admissible irreducible representations when the level is k=-1/2 or k=-4/3. The S-matrix data and Verlinde formula are then checked against the known fusion rules with complete agreement. Finally, an infinite set of modular invariant partition functions is constructed in each case.

Non-Chiral Logarithmic Couplings for the Virasoro Algebra

This Letter initiates the study of what we call non-chiral staggered Virasoro modules, indecomposable modules on which two copies of the Virasoro algebra act with the two zero-modes acting non-semisimply. This is motivated by the "puzzle" recently reported in arXiv:1110.1327 [math-ph] involving a non-standard measured value, meaning that the value is not familiar from chiral studies, for the "b-parameter" (logarithmic coupling) of a c=0 bulk conformal field theory. Here, an explanation is proposed by introducing a natural family of bulk modules and showing that the only consistent, non-standard logarithmic coupling that is distinguished through structure is that which was measured. This observation is shown to persist for general central charges and a conjecture is made for the values of certain non-chiral logarithmic couplings.

W-Algebras Extending Affine gl(1|1)

It was recently shown that gl^(1|1) admits an infinite family of simple current extensions. Here, these findings are reviewed and explicit free field realisations of the extended algebras are constructed. The leading contributions to the operator product algebra are then calculated. Among these extensions, one finds four infinite families that seem to contain, as subalgebras, copies of the W^(2)_N algebras of Feigin and Semikhatov at various levels and central charges +/- 1.

Fusion in Fractional Level sl^(2)-Theories with k=-1/2

The fusion rules of conformal field theories admitting an sl^(2)-symmetry at level k=-1/2 are studied. It is shown that the fusion closes on the set of irreducible highest weight modules and their images under spectral flow, but not when "highest weight" is replaced with "relaxed highest weight". The fusion of the relaxed modules, necessary for a well-defined u^(1)-coset, gives two families of indecomposable modules on which the Virasoro zero-mode acts non-diagonalisably. This confirms the logarithmic nature of the associated theories. The structures of the indecomposable modules are completely determined as staggered modules and it is shown that there are no logarithmic couplings (beta-invariants). The relation to the fusion ring of the c=-2 triplet model and the implications for the beta gamma ghost system are briefly discussed.

sl(2)_{-1/2} and the Triplet Model

Conformal field theories with sl(2)_{-1/2} symmetry are studied with a view to investigating logarithmic structures. Applying the parafermionic coset construction to the non-logarithmic theory, a part of the structure of the triplet model is uncovered. In particular, the coset theory is shown to admit the triplet W-algebra as a chiral algebra. This motivates the introduction of an augmented sl(2)_{-1/2}-theory for which the corresponding coset theory is precisely the triplet model. This augmentation is envisaged to lead to a precise characterisation of the "logarithmic lift" of the non-logarithmic sl(2)_{-1/2}-theory that has been proposed by Lesage et al.

On Staggered Indecomposable Virasoro Modules

In this article, certain indecomposable Virasoro modules are studied. Specifically, the Virasoro mode L_0 is assumed to be non-diagonalisable, possessing Jordan blocks of rank two. Moreover, the module is further assumed to have a highest weight submodule, the "left module", and that the quotient by this submodule yields another highest weight module, the "right module". Such modules, which have been called staggered, have appeared repeatedly in the logarithmic conformal field theory literature, but their theory has not been explored in full generality. Here, such a theory is developed for the Virasoro algebra using rather elementary techniques. The focus centres on two different but related questions typically encountered in practical studies: How can one identify a given staggered module, and how can one demonstrate the existence of a proposed staggered module. The text is liberally peppered throughout with examples illustrating the general concepts. These have been carefully chosen for their physical relevance or for the novel features they exhibit.

sl^(2)_{-1/2}: A Case Study

The construction of the non-logarithmic conformal field theory based on sl^(2)_{-1/2} is revisited. Without resorting to free-field methods, the determination of the spectrum and fusion rules is streamlined and the beta gamma ghost system is carefully derived as the extended algebra generated by the unique finite-order simple current. A brief discussion of modular invariance is given and the Verlinde formula is explicitly verified.

On the Percolation BCFT and the Crossing Probability of Watts

The logarithmic conformal field theory describing critical percolation is further explored using Watts' determination of the probability that there exists a cluster connecting both horizontal and vertical edges. The boundary condition changing operator which governs Watts' computation is identified with a primary field which does not fit naturally within the extended Kac table. Instead a "shifted" extended Kac table is shown to be relevant. Augmenting the previously known logarithmic theory based on Cardy's crossing probability by this field, a larger theory is obtained, in which new classes of indecomposable rank-2 modules are present. No rank-3 Jordan cells are yet observed. A highly non-trivial check of the identification of Watts' field is that no Gurarie-Ludwig-type inconsistencies are observed in this augmentation. The article concludes with an extended discussion of various topics related to extending these results including projectivity, boundary sectors and inconsistency loopholes.

Logarithmic M(2,p) Minimal Models, their Logarithmic Couplings, and Duality

A natural construction of the logarithmic extension of the M(2,p) minimal models is presented, which generalises our previous model [0708.0802] of percolation (p=3). Its key aspect is the replacement of the minimal model irreducible modules by reducible ones obtained by requiring that only one of the two principal singular vectors of each module vanish. The resulting theory is then constructed systematically by repeatedly fusing these building block representations. This generates indecomposable representations of the type which signify the presence of logarithmic partner fields in the theory. The basic data characterising these indecomposable modules, the logarithmic couplings, are computed for many special cases and given a new structural interpretation. Quite remarkably, a number of them are presented in closed analytic form (for general p). These are the prime examples of ``gauge-invariant'' data - quantities independent of the ambiguities present in defining the logarithmic partner fields. Finally, mere global conformal invariance is shown to enforce strong constraints on the allowed spectrum: It is not possible to include modules other than those generated by the fusion of the model's building blocks. This generalises the statement that there cannot exist two effective central charges in a c=0 model. It also suggests the existence of a second ``dual'' logarithmic theory for each p. Such dual models are briefly discussed.

From Percolation to Logarithmic Conformal Field Theory

The smallest deformation of the minimal model M(2,3) that can accommodate Cardy's derivation of the percolation crossing probability is presented. It is shown that this leads to a consistent logarithmic conformal field theory at c=0. A simple recipe for computing the associated fusion rules is given. The differences between this theory and the other recently proposed c=0 logarithmic conformal field theories are underlined. The discussion also emphasises the existence of invariant logarithmic couplings that generalise Gurarie's anomaly number.

The Extended Algebra of the Minimal Models

The minimal models M(p',p) with p' > 2 have a unique (non-trivial) simple current of conformal dimension h = (p' - 2) (p - 2) / 4. The representation theory of the extended algebra defined by this simple current is investigated in detail. All highest weight representations are proved to be irreducible: There are thus no singular vectors in the extended theory. This has interesting structural consequences. In particular, it leads to a recursive method for computing the various terms appearing in the operator product expansion of the simple current with itself. The simplest extended models are analysed in detail and the question of equivalence of conformal field theories is carefully examined.

The Extended Algebra of the SU(2) Wess-Zumino-Witten Models

The Wess-Zumino-Witten model defined on the group SU(2) has a unique (non-trivial) simple current of conformal dimension k/4 for each level k. The extended algebra defined by this simple current is carefully constructed in terms of generalised commutation relations, and the corresponding representation theory is investigated. This extended algebra approach is proven to realise a faithful ("free-field-type") representation of the SU(2) model. Subtleties in the formulation of the extended theory are illustrated throughout by the k=1, 2 and 4 models. For the first two cases, bases for the modules of the extended theory are given and rigorously justified.

Presentations of Wess-Zumino-Witten Fusion Rings

The fusion rings of Wess-Zumino-Witten models are re-examined. Attention is drawn to the difference between fusion rings over Z (which are often of greater importance in applications) and fusion algebras over C. Complete proofs are given characterising the fusion algebras (over C) of the SU(r+1) and Sp(2r) models in terms of the fusion potentials, and it is shown that the analagous potentials cannot describe the fusion algebras of the other models. This explains why no other representation-theoretic fusion potentials have been found. Instead, explicit generators are then constructed for general WZW fusion rings (over Z). The Jacobi-Trudy identity and its Sp(2r) analogue are used to derive the known fusion potentials. This formalism is then extended to the WZW models over the spin groups of odd rank, and explicit presentations of the corresponding fusion rings are given. The analogues of the Jacobi-Trudy identity for the spinor representations (for all ranks) are derived for this purpose, and may be of independent interest.

Exclusion statistics in conformal field theory and the UCPF for WZW models

In this paper we further elaborate on the notion of fractional exclusion statistics, as introduced by Haldane, in two-dimensional conformal field theory, and its connection to the Universal Chiral Partition Function as defined by McCoy and collaborators. We will argue that in general, besides the pseudo-particles introduced recently by Guruswamy and Schoutens, one needs additional `null quasi-particles' to account for the null-states in the quasi-particle Fock space. We illustrate this in several examples of WZW-models.
