A Generalization of Ripley's K Function for the Detection of Spatial Clustering in Areal Data

Spatial clustering detection has a variety of applications in diverse fields, including identifying infectious disease outbreaks, assessing land use patterns, pinpointing crime hotspots, and identifying clusters of neurons in brain imaging applications. While performing spatial clustering analysis on point process data is common, applications to areal data are frequently of interest. For example, researchers might wish to know if census tracts with a case of a rare medical condition or an outbreak of an infectious disease tend to cluster together spatially. Since few spatial clustering methods are designed for areal data, researchers often reduce the areal data to point process data (e.g., using the centroid of each areal unit) and apply methods designed for point process data, such as Ripley's K function or the average nearest neighbor method. However, since these methods were not designed for areal data, a number of issues can arise. For example, we show that they can result in loss of power and/or a significantly inflated type I error rate. To address these issues, we propose a generalization of Ripley's K function designed specifically to detect spatial clustering in areal data. We compare its performance to that of the traditional Ripley's K function, the average nearest neighbor method, and the spatial scan statistic with an extensive simulation study. We then evaluate the real world performance of the method by using it to detect spatial clustering in land parcels containing conservation easements and US counties with high pediatric overweight/obesity rates.

Homotopy theory of algebras of substitudes and their localisation

We study the category of algebras of substitudes (also known to be equivalent to the regular patterns of Getzler) equipped with a (semi)model structure lifted from the model structure on the underlying presheaves. We are especially interested in the case when the model structure on presheaves is a Cisinski style localisation with respect to a proper Grothendieck fundamental localiser. For example, for $\mathtt{W}=\mathtt{W}_{\infty}$ the minimal fundamental localiser, the local objects in such a localisation are locally constant presheaves, and local algebras of substitudes are exactly algebras whose underlying presheaves are locally constant. We investigate when this localisation has nice properties. We single out a class of such substitudes which we call left localisable and show that the substitudes for $n$-operads, symmetric, and braided operads are in this class. As an application we develop a homotopy theory of higher braided operads and prove a stabilisation theorem for their $\mathtt{W}_k$-localisations. This theorem implies, in particular, a generalisation of the Baez-Dolan Stabilisation Hypothesis for higher categories.

Substitudes, Bousfield localization, higher braided operads, and Baez-Dolan stabilization

This short note reports on joint work with Michael Batanin towards a general machine for proving Baez-Dolan Stabilization Theorems for various models of higher categories, based on substitudes, Bousfield localization, and homotopical Beck-Chevalley squares. I provide a road map to our recent papers, and include new results proving Baez-Dolan Stabilization Theorems for Tamsamani weak $n$-categories, higher Segal categories, Ara's $n$-quasi-categories, and cartesian models of Segal and complete Segal objects due to Bergner and Rezk. I also attempt to clarify the connection to higher braided operads, and our more general stabilization machinery.

Homotopical Adjoint Lifting Theorem

This paper provides a homotopical version of the adjoint lifting theorem in category theory, allowing for Quillen equivalences to be lifted from monoidal model categories to categories of algebras over colored operads. The generality of our approach allows us to simultaneously answer questions of rectification and of changing the base model category to a Quillen equivalent one. We work in the setting of colored operads, and we do not require them to be $Σ$-cofibrant. Special cases of our main theorem recover many known results regarding rectification and change of model category, as well as numerous new results. In particular, we recover a recent result of Richter-Shipley about a zig-zag of Quillen equivalences between commutative $H\mathbb{Q}$-algebra spectra and commutative differential graded $\mathbb{Q}$-algebras, but our version involves only three Quillen equivalences instead of six. We also work out the theory of how to lift Quillen equivalences to categories of colored operad algebras after a left Bousfield localization.

Arrow Categories of Monoidal Model Categories

We prove that the arrow category of a monoidal model category, equipped with the pushout product monoidal structure and the projective model structure, is a monoidal model category. This answers a question posed by Mark Hovey, and has the important consequence that it allows for the consideration of a monoidal product in cubical homotopy theory. As illustrations we include numerous examples of non-cofibrantly generated monoidal model categories, including chain complexes, small categories, topological spaces, and pro-categories.

Encoding Equivariant Commutativity via Operads

In this paper, we prove a conjecture of Blumberg and Hill regarding the existence of $N_\infty$-operads associated to given sequences $\mathcal{F} = (\mathcal{F}_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ of families of subgroups of $G\times Σ_n$. For every such sequence, we construct a model structure on the category of $G$-operads, and we use these model structures to define $E_\infty^{\mathcal{F}}$-operads, generalizing the notion of an $N_\infty$-operad, and to prove the Blumberg-Hill conjecture. We then explore questions of admissibility, rectification, and preservation under left Bousfield localization for these $E_\infty^{\mathcal{F}}$-operads, obtaining some new results as well for $N_\infty$-operads.

A Project Based Approach to Statistics and Data Science

In an increasingly data-driven world, facility with statistics is more important than ever for our students. At institutions without a statistician, it often falls to the mathematics faculty to teach statistics courses. This paper presents a model that a mathematician asked to teach statistics can follow. This model entails connecting with faculty from numerous departments on campus to develop a list of topics, building a repository of real-world datasets from these faculty, and creating projects where students interface with these datasets to write lab reports aimed at consumers of statistics in other disciplines. The end result is students who are well prepared for interdisciplinary research, who are accustomed to coping with the idiosyncrasies of real data, and who have sharpened their technical writing and speaking skills.

Right Bousfield Localization and Operadic Algebras

It is well known that under some general conditions right Bousfield localization exists. We provide general conditions under which right Bousfield localization yields a monoidal model category. Then we address the questions of when this monoidal model structure on a right Bousfield localization induces a model structure on the category of algebras over a colored operad and when a right Bousfield localization preserves colored operadic algebras. We give numerous applications, to topological spaces, equivariant spaces, chain complexes, stable module categories, and to the category of small categories. We recover a wide range of classical results as special cases of our theory, and prove several new preservation results.

Monoidal Bousfield Localizations and Algebras over Operads

We give conditions on a monoidal model category M and on a set of maps C so that the Bousfield localization of M with respect to C preserves the structure of algebras over various operads. This problem was motivated by an example that demonstrates that, for the model category of equivariant spectra, preservation does not come for free, even for cofibrant operads. We discuss this example in detail and provide a general theorem regarding when localization preserves P-algebra structure for an arbitrary operad P. We characterize the localizations that respect monoidal structure and prove that all such localizations preserve algebras over cofibrant operads. As a special case we recover numerous classical theorems about preservation of algebraic structure under localization, in the context of spaces, spectra, chain complexes, and equivariant spectra. We also provide several new results in these settings, and we sharpen a recent result of Hill and Hopkins regarding preservation for equivariant spectra. To demonstrate our preservation result for non-cofibrant operads, we work out when localization preserves commutative monoids and the commutative monoid axiom, and again numerous examples are provided. Finally, we provide conditions so that localization preserves the monoid axiom.

The user's guide project: giving experiential context to research papers

This paper was written in 2015, and published in the Journal of Humanistic Mathematics. This paper announces the first issue (2015) of Enchiridion: Mathematics User's Guides, a project to produce peer-reviewed User's Guides as companions to published papers. These User's Guides are meant to explain the key insights and organizing principles in their companion papers, the metaphors and imagery used by the authors, the story of the development of the companion papers, and a colloquial summary appropriate for a non-mathematical audience. Examples of User's Guides can be found at https://mathusersguides.com/

Bousfield Localization and Eilenberg-Moore Categories

We prove the equivalence of several hypotheses that have appeared recently in the literature for studying left Bousfield localization and algebras over a monad. We find conditions so that there is a model structure for local algebras, so that localization preserves algebras, and so that localization lifts to the level of algebras. We include examples coming from the theory of colored operads, and applications to spaces, spectra, and chain complexes.

Right Bousfield Localization and Eilenberg-Moore Categories

We compare several recent approaches to studying right Bousfield localization and algebras over monads. We prove these approaches are equivalent, and we apply this equivalence to obtain several new results regarding right Bousfield localizations (some classical, some new) for spectra, spaces, equivariant spaces, chain complexes, simplicial abelian groups, and the stable module category. En route, we provide conditions so that right Bousfield localization lifts to categories of algebras, so that right Bousfield localization preserves algebras over monads, and so that right Bousfield localization forms a compactly generated model category.

A Contextual Model Of The Secessionist Rebellion in Eastern Ukraine

This paper explores the possible contextual factors that drove some individuals to lead, and others to join the pro-secessionist rebellion in the 2013-2014 conflict in Eastern Ukraine. We expand on the existing rational choice literature on revolutionary participation and rebellious movements by building a contextual choice model accounting for both cost-benefit and behavioral considerations taken by Pro-Russian militants and rebels in the region of Donbass. Our model generates predictions about the characteristics of the socio-political-cultural context that are most likely to ignite and sustain hierarchical rebel movements similar to those in Ukraine.

Model Structures on Commutative Monoids in General Model Categories

We provide conditions on a monoidal model category $\mathcal{M}$ so that the category of commutative monoids in $\mathcal{M}$ inherits a model structure from $\mathcal{M}$ in which a map is a weak equivalence or fibration if and only if it is so in $\mathcal{M}$. We then investigate properties of cofibrations of commutative monoids, rectification between $E_\infty$-algebras and commutative monoids, the relationship between commutative monoids and monoidal Bousfield localization functors, when the category of commutative monoids can be made left proper, and functoriality of the passage from a commutative monoid $R$ to the category of commutative $R$-algebras. In the final section we provide numerous examples of model categories satisfying our hypotheses.

Bousfield Localization and Algebras over Colored Operads

We provide a very general approach to placing model structures and semi-model structures on algebras over symmetric colored operads. Our results require minimal hypotheses on the underlying model category $\mathcal{M}$, and these hypotheses vary depending on what is known about the colored operads in question. We obtain results for the classes of colored operad which are cofibrant as a symmetric collection, entrywise cofibrant, or arbitrary. As the hypothesis on the operad is weakened, the hypotheses on $\mathcal{M}$ must be strengthened. Via a careful development of the categorical algebra of colored operads we provide a unified framework which allows us to build (semi-)model structures for all three of these classes of colored operads. We then apply these results to provide conditions on $\mathcal{M}$, on the colored operad $\mathcal{O}$, and on a class $\mathcal{C}$ of morphisms in $\mathcal{M}$ so that the left Bousfield localization of $\mathcal{M}$ with respect to $\mathcal{C}$ preserves $\mathcal{O}$-algebras.

An Overview of Schema Theory

The purpose of this paper is to give an introduction to the field of Schema Theory written by a mathematician and for mathematicians. In particular, we endeavor to to highlight areas of the field which might be of interest to a mathematician, to point out some related open problems, and to suggest some large-scale projects. Schema theory seeks to give a theoretical justification for the efficacy of the field of genetic algorithms, so readers who have studied genetic algorithms stand to gain the most from this paper. However, nothing beyond basic probability theory is assumed of the reader, and for this reason we write in a fairly informal style. Because the mathematics behind the theorems in schema theory is relatively elementary, we focus more on the motivation and philosophy. Many of these results have been proven elsewhere, so this paper is designed to serve a primarily expository role. We attempt to cast known results in a new light, which makes the suggested future directions natural. This involves devoting a substantial amount of time to the history of the field. We hope that this exposition will entice some mathematicians to do research in this area, that it will serve as a road map for researchers new to the field, and that it will help explain how schema theory developed. Furthermore, we hope that the results collected in this document will serve as a useful reference. Finally, as far as the author knows, the questions raised in the final section are new.
